On April 2, the Chinese Ambassador to The Bahamas, Yuan Guisen, arrived on Abaco. He was greeted at the airport and immediately taken to the Office of the Prime Minister in the Marsh Harbour Government Complex for a banquet. Before the meal he was introduced to those in attendance which included island administrators, representatives from the Ministry of Tourism, Customs, the private sector and other government officials. Mr. Guisen thanked everyone for the warm reception and said, via his translator, “As soon as I set foot on land on Abaco I felt at home.” North Abaco Member of Parliament and Parliamentary Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, Renardo Curry, spoke briefly with Mr. Guisen about Abaco. He told him that besides the beautiful water and scenery, Abaco is home to vibrant communities, “Places like Man-OWar Cay,” he gave as an example, mentioning their boat-building heritage. Mr. Guisen told the room that he expects more Chinese tourists to be visiting The Bahamas. He continued by saying Chinese Tour Companies are ready to begin partnering and learning about the tourist product of Abaco. He said he is committed to helping attract the market in China. Mr. Curry said that, “Having him visit Abaco speaks to how important the things happening here are.” Mr. Guisen and his wife, Madam Yang Hong, spent the next day touring some of the Cays. He remarked that the

view from the Hope Town Lighthouse was very beautiful and during his visit to Man-O-War was very interested in the boat building operations. The Ambassador was then taken to lunch at Bakers Bay on Guana Cay and given a tour of the property. The Ambassador also spent some time in North Abaco.

MP Curry said he felt the Ambassador’s visit went, “Very well.” He said that ideas are being exchanged for a “People to people” program and that the Ambassador would be encouraging his government to make investments on Abaco as well as promote it as a tourist destination.

Central & All Abaco Central Abaco Council March 27, 2014 By David Ralph Chief Councillor George Cornish met with a full board of nine council members in the Government Administration Complex on March 27, 2014. Two residents attended to clarify issues with the Coffy Cemetery by the Port in Marsh Harbour. This cemetery plot was donated to the community in April 1874. Concerns were raised last month on whether the cemetery is public or private. This governs who controls burials as a private cemetery can be restrictive whereas a public cemetery is open to all. A recent communique from Crown Lands stated that “it was not private” without further details. Management of the cemetery is to continue with local management as before, pending further clarification. Mr. Krezel, engineer for the Abaco Ministry of Works, spoke at length on the need for contractors to comply with plans and those submitting plans to comply with the Bahamas Building Code requirements. The legal requirement for engineers and other specialty professions to prepare, review and stamp some plans was also brought out. Council members objected to his interference with plans approved locally as the Local Government Act specifically gives the authority of the Building Control Officer to the Chief Councillor. It was brought out that government often makes

laws and regulations that work well in Nassau but are difficult to comply with in the Family Islands. The Deputy Director of Works is expected to visit Abaco in the next few weeks and a meeting with council members will be arranged to sort out responsibilities. A scholarship in the name of Mike Mlone, Abaco’s first local government Chief Councillor, is being formulated. It was too late to establish this award for this year's applicants Quotes are being reviewed for replacement signs at township entrances. Repairs will be made to the Southside Dock which has been vandalized and is an important arrival and departure point for Moore’s Island persons and bonefish guides with their customers. Garbage clean-up will be undertaken at this site.

South Abaco Cherokee hosts “Big Sing”

Above: Bateman Sands playing the mouth organ. By Lee Pinder Epworth Methodist Chapel in Cherokee Sound hosted a “Big Sing” on Sunday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. on March 23, to help raise medical funds for one of their members and pay tribute and special thanks to another. A large and enthusiastic crowd enjoyed some lively and up-lifting selections from several different artists and groups. The audience participated in the program whenever they could by singing along or clapping their hands in time to the music. People came from as far away as Green Turtle Cay and Sandy Point. The evening started off with the Epworth Corale singing a couple of their favourites. The oldest performer was

Cherokee’s own Brother Bateman Sands at 81 years young who sang and played his mouth organ. Akehm Adderley, an up and coming singer from Dundas Town, with his strong voice belted out one of his favourite hymns to everyone’s enjoyment. The Faith Sisters, three young ladies from the Cherokee Assemblies of God, did a couple of beautiful renditions of some more lovely hymns and the audience was enjoying every minute of it. There was a beautiful selection done by Roger Pinder playing guitar and singing a duet along with his wife, Laurel. Someone you see everywhere these days is Viola Adderly with her extremely popular Rake & Scrape program that she puts on. This evening she was showing off a brand new grater, with a proper handle. She gets the audience fired up, and I’m pleased to report her music is still fantastic (with or without a new grater). The highlight of the evening came when The New Direction, a group with a guitarist, a piano player and three singers, who gave a few renditions from their soonto-be-released new album, which almost brought down the house. The evening finished off with the Corale closing off the night with more singing. At this point, the sun had not yet set and there was plenty of daylight left when Reverend Marie Neilly, minister for Epworth, closed the evening off with the benediction. Light refreshments were served on the church steps afterwards while everyone hung around to rave about the wonderful music performed by the artists before heading back home.

(Photo courtesy of BNT) Press Release Recently, Bahamas National Trust (BNT) officials met with local communities in Abaco to discuss proposed parks. Meetings were held in Marsh Harbour, Cherokee and Cross Harbour. Additionally, the BNT met with fishermen in Sandy Point, Abaco, to address concerns about the proposed national park for Cross Harbour in South Abaco. The meeting went extremely well; as the BNT assured fishermen that their interests were considered when proposing the park. “When new national parks are desig-

nated under the BNT, traditional uses by the communities are taken into consideration,” noted David Knowles, BNT Director of Parks. “Knowing that the Sandy Point fishermen depend on Cross Harbour, it is proposed for multi-use, just like the recently expanded Andros West Side National Park.” Knowles added that the entire west coast of Andros is now a national park, and fishermen are still able to fish within the park, and the same will be incorporated for Cross Harbour and The Please see

Marls of Abaco. The proposed protection of the new Abaco areas will ensure that prime fishing grounds and important nursery habitats are protected from unsustainable development. As such, the livelihoods of fishermen that depend on the natural resources will be safeguarded and for those of future generations to come. Cross Harbour was first proposed as a no-build zone in 2006 by Friends of the Environment following a creek restoration project. Their proposal received support from the Abaco Fly Fishing Guide Association (AFFGA) and local fishermen. However, there were concerns on whether this would provide the protection needed, and discussions advanced for the area to be proposed as a national park under the BNT’s mandate. Lakeshia Anderson, Grand Bahama Parks Manager was also present at the meeting, and provided attendees an overview of the work completed to date. She noted that Abaco fishermen and research have shown that bonefish travel long distances from The Marls of Abaco to Cross Harbour to spawn, which has led to the decision to protect both areas. Additionally, surveys have been conducted of important areas including the offshore reef, mangroves, conch beds and fish populations, and the BNT is ready to move forward

with proposal development for submission to Government. Eric Carey, BNT Executive Director was present at the meeting and spoke to the fisherman saying, "The intention for Cross Harbour was absolutely never to be proposed as a no-take area. Before any decisions are made, fishermen will be involved in the entire process.” Carey noted that relationships between local fishermen, local government and the BNT are crucial to ensuring the area is effectively managed and protected. Carey suggested to the fishermen present that they should appoint individuals who will be responsible for transferring information, and be involved in discussions on management decisions on their behalf, once the park is created.” At the end of the evening the fishermen voiced their gratitude to the BNT for assuring them that the proposed national park for Cross Harbour will protect their fishing grounds from unwanted development, and reiterated their support through rounds of applause. To learn more about the proposed parks in Abaco and other islands please visit the BNT website. Many more meetings will happen before any parks are officially granted as the Government, the BNT and local NGO’s want community participation and support.

North Abaco MP Curry holds community meeting in Little Abaco

Above: North Abaco Member of Parliament, Renardo Curry (center) met with the Little Abaco Community in Mount Hope on April 4. By Bishop Carroll On Friday April 4, 2014 The Member of Parliament for North Abaco, Renardo Curry, hosted an island social gathering with residents of Little Abaco in the North. This was well received by the residents as most of them turned out at his Mount Hope Constituency Office. Residents, including retired police officer and Pastor Zike MacIntosh of Wood Cay, were happy about this event, saying they hope the meetings will continue since many of them are unable to make trips to Marsh Harbour to meet with their Member of Parliament. Little Abaco Pre-School Principal, Anita Russell of Crown Haven, said that she is happy and celebrated the occasion, while self-employed fisherman Don Role mentioned that he hopes the high ethical standards of Hon. Curry’s mission and purpose continued to be fulfilled. Community Against Crime Com-

missioner, Wilton Saunders, said that the meeting was very significant in bridging the gap to North Abaco youth. Local Government Chairman, Leslie McIntosh of Fox Town and Business owner Jonathan Curry of Mount Hope, both commented that they were happy with the evening’s turnout. As the evening continued more people came from Cedar Harbour to sit and chat with Mr. Curry as he discussed practical solutions to some problems the community faces. Refreshments were served, provided by two of great women of the communityAndrea Thompson and Gwendolyn Bain. In a brief interview with Mr. Curry he said that things are now being put in place to provide not just employment but to bring a great deal of infrastructural development, which will take North Abaco to the next level of sustainability.

From the Editor's Desk

Before I start my rambling I have to thank everyone who has been such a good sport about our recent April Fool’s Day story. No, the Hope Town Lighthouse has not been sold. But I do have to say how encouraging it was to see so much passion about one of the things that makes Abaco unique! One of the best things about Abaco is how unique, diverse, and yet familiar each of our communities are. I recently had the privilege of visiting Green Turtle Cay for the tremendous Devour! The Beach event. A lot familiar faces were there along with some not so familiar. Every time I visit it strikes me how similar, yet unique, it is. It is exciting knowing there’s always something new to learn around these islands. It was a fun night that got me thinking: I should really spend more time in Green Turtle Cay.

The Abaconian Bradley M. Albury Editor-in-Chief AB 20213 Marsh Harbour Abaco, The Bahamas

// Staycation

See, I grew up as a Hope Town boy. Throughout my childhood Green Turtle Cay might as well have been on the other side of the world. Same went for those mysterious settlements known as “Sandy Point,” “Fox Town,” or “Crossing Rocks.” But now my job requires me to make trips to these places a good bit. It has shrunk Abaco, in a way. However, despite that, our community is still full of surprises. Thinking more on this, it should make us locals jealous the opportunity visitors to our island have. To see this place fresh. To see it new. And to experience Abaco, and all her settlement and Cays, as one whole. Everywhere is exciting and has treasures to yield. So, why should the tourists have all the fun? We owe it to ourselves and to our neighbors to explore our own island a little. You live in the north? Go south. You live in Guana? Spend an afternoon exploring Little Abaco. It makes us richer individually and as a community. With Easter break coming up with that nice long weekend I urge you to think like a tourist and get to know your island a little more. And if you are a tourist I urge you to set out to someplace new in Abaco. You might think you’ve found the best conch salad vendor, but have you really tried them all?

Letters to the Editor A Waste of $39 Million

Devour!

Dear Editor, Please allow me to vent my anger on what I believe to be the biggest waste of Money I have ever, ever heard of.... Government to build a $39 million dollar Port in North Abaco. WHAT ARE THEY THINKING...THEY MUST BE MAD !!!! Honestly, can some give me a good explanation as to why anyone in their right mind would spend $39 million dollars to build a Port in the middle of NO WHERE that NO ONE will EVER USE ???? Who’s going to use this Port? Da mail boat from Nassau ? Man dis a bunch of foolishness !! Who idea dis is? Hubert dem? Perry dem? Let’s not play the blame game here, whoever is responsible for this made a serious mistake which needs to be corrected before WE the tax payers wind up trying to repay a $39 million dollar LOAN we never agreed to and NO Abaconian wants. I tell you what. The government likes referendums so let me put this question to them. Hold a referendum in Abaco and ask registered voters if they agree to this $39 million loan and if they agree to spend it on a Port north of Cooper’s Town Abaco. I don’t gamble (as in illegal numbers houses...that have tripled in numbers even though we the people voted to shut them down) but if I did I would bet 75% of the people of Abaco would say NO.....NO WAY....WE DON’T WANT IT. A few might argue that this Port will bring development to North Abaco. I say, “What development”? Name one single project planned for north Abaco that justifies a $39 million dollar port? There is not a single hotel/resort developer that would be interested in north Abaco...there are NO beaches north of Treasure Cay....none.... it’s all just rocky, iron shoreline that is undesirable for hotel/resort development. If the government is locked into borrowing this money from the Chinese then for Heaven’s sakes use it for something sensible. Like...how about a new central police station and some new police vehicles? How about rebuilding our government schools that are falling down? Surely this takes precedent over a Port in da Bush. SPEAK UP ABACO BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE. If we pull together we the people can stop this madness. SPEAK UP!!!!

Dear Editor: I sit here stuffed and satisfied. After gorging on the incredible meals and wine tastings served up at Devour! The Beach at the Green Turtle Club this past weekend, I need the opportunity to let my taste buds recover. For those of you who missed it, Chef Michael Howell, five well-known chefs for the US and Canada, and a Master of Wine from the UK, put on a three day food and wine fest that would leave any “foodie” and “non-foodie” exhausted, and smiling. Words cannot describe the flavors. If asked what we ate, I would have to say short ribs, fish, lamb, etc. But that would be like saying “female” when asked to describe Halle Berry. The meat/fish was a mere conduit for the chefs’ talents which were in the sauces, spices, and touches used with these dishes. The Master of Wine was funny, informative, and down to earth. No wine snob here. This was a guy you’d enjoy having a beer with afterwards, and we did. The chefs - from Houston, Chicago, Cleveland, Ottawa, and Nova Scotia were approachable and mingled with the crowds, before, during and after meals. As their respective courses were being served, they explained what was in each dish and what their inspiration was for the dish. Congratulations to Michael Howell and the Green Turtle Club for planning and conducting an inspired and creative weekend. The courage to take a leap of faith for such a unique event deserves recognition in Abaco and beyond. And for those who missed it, you’d better hope that Chef Mike and the Green Turtle Club will be willing to do it again next year. This was an experience that was a bargain at any price. -D. Meek

-Shocked and Astounded

Gratuities Should Not Be Mandatory Gratuity, I think the word may be losing its meaning here in The Bahamas. Far too frequently I will eat in a restaurant and have a “gratuity” written into my bill; a gratuity, or tip, should be offered up voluntarily, not automatically added, as it’s very hard to decline or adjust once it’s on your bill. Having spent the better part of my life

traveling the world I can assure you this is the custom most everywhere and where it is not, customers come away with a bad feeling and are likely to seek out other establishments because of it. Now I am not being cheap; I inject many thousands of dollars into the local economy voluntarily during my annual visits to The Bahamas including offering generous tips to hard working employees; shop owners please don’t make it mandatory, it cheapens the experience for all. Mind you, my primary beef is not with hard working underpaid employees, but rather the small business owners, the mom and pop eateries that are located throughout the smaller islands; these are the people who seem to be adding the majority of written in gratuities. As a prior, small business owner myself I can truthfully say I was not underpaid and if I was it was my responsibility to cut my costs or raise my prices; something beyond an average employees control. Owners who own and operate their own restaurants or service establishments should not be including an additional gratuity for services rendered by themselves, as a business owner I would never have considered taking, much less asking for a tip; it’s an insult to our profession and personal pride as well as an irritant to customers when it is discovered on our bill. Owners, please reconsider this practice before it proliferates across the islands, remember, a happy customer tells one other person whereas a disappointed customer will on average tell eight. -Anonymous

Thanks to the Person Who Found My Red Life Vest Dear Editor: I would like to thank the person who found my red inflatable life vest and hung it on the white, picket fence on the road going toward the ferry dock. Your kind gesture is greatly appreciated. You may have saved my life. Thank you so much. Sincerely, Kathy Losee

Abaco People Dear Editor: We just returned from a fabulous week on Green Turtle Cay, and wanted the people of the Abacos to know about the kindness and honesty shown by several residents there on the islands. Once we arrived in Green Turtle, we realized that one of our boys left his backpack containing many valuable items including his school IPAD and wallet in the taxi driver’s car. Carol Jean Lowe of Kool Karts, who was there to meet us, immediately jumped into action by calling and tracking down the driver of our taxi to see if the backpack could be located. We were the last flight in to Treasure Cay, and it was dark when we arrived. Samuel Mills, our extremely honest taxi driver, located the missing item and made sure the backpack was put on the Green Turtle Ferry the very next morning. Please see

Gillam Bay beach erosion a concern after construction of controversial bulkhead

has done.” He stated that access has been completely blocked by the bulkhead which makes it difficult to get to the beach “and, if you could, there is no place to walk even at low tide.” Mr. Adderley said that “God gave us a naturally beautiful beach, and the beach belongs to the community and the locals. No one should have the right to take all that away from the people like what has happened here.” Mr. Adderley said to allow this beach to be destroyed by the selfish actions of a few would be a disaster and it sets a bad precedent. He is appealing to North Abaco Minister of Parliament Renardo Curry to come and see and do something to save Gillam Bay “for the residents of Green Turtle Cay and the many visitors who come to enjoy our amenities.”

NO Change in Parking Problems Dear Editor, Thank you for publishing my concerns in the last issue about the parking problems in Marsh Harbour. Vehicles continue to be a problem across the street from Bristol Wines, along Pole Line Road, and around the old BTC building. The situation has not changed one bit, obviously no one cares and it’s apparent that the company allowing their employees to park there could care less. Why don’t they have their employees park in the empty field next to the Marsh Harbour Port and Albury’s Ferry can pickup and drop-off at that location? This stretch of Marsh Harbour looks disgusting....do we have a local government? Why are they ignoring this problem? Would someone from The Abaconian please call them? Maybe you can get an answer. I’m happy to report the parking problem around our building is much improved as illegally parked vehicles that continue to ignore posted “No Parking” signs have been and will be towed away at the vehicle owner’s expense. Thank you, B. Thompson

Above: a bulkhead built in front of a property in the Gillam Bay area of Green Turtle Cay has residents and visitors concerned that the popular beach may disappear. According to a Green Turtle Cay Council member, “hundreds of feet of beach,” have washed away since the bulkhead’s construction. By Timothy Roberts Green Turtle Cay Council member Donnie Adderley is concerned about erosion occurring at Gillam Bay after one property owner built a bulkhead on the beach in front of their property. Mr. Adderley, who opposed the local government decision to permit the bulkhead, said that since the bulkhead was built last year “hundreds of feet of beach have gone; washed away.” He said that in over twenty-nine years Gillam Bay and residents that have built homes near the beach have never had problems with erosion but now he fears that a hurricane coming from the right direction

could cut the island in half. He further questions whether the building of such a bulkhead on a beach is even permitted by law. A resident also noted that sand was taken from the bay to backfill the bulkhead creating a new channel which he believes will have effects on the land to the leeward. Mr. Adderley said that locals and visitors alike are upset with what has happened to the once naturally beautiful beach and a favorite of guests to the Cay. As one regular visitor commented, “I have always thought that public access to all beaches on the islands was one of the best things the Bahamian Government

The Cays Devour! feeds Green Turtle Devour! The Beach excited “foodies,” both tourist and local alike, during the three day event in Green Turtle Cay that started March 26. Devour!, best described as an ocean-side wine and food extravaganza, paired hungry guests with five famous chefs along with a knowledgeable Master of Wine. Dinners, lunches, wine tastings and special culinary events kept the party going at the Green Turtle Club, where Devour! was held. The events that were planned for the event were the Welcome Reception, “Great Wines of Italy,” “Kitchen North America,” “Which Wine with Your Fish,” “Jean Joho French Classic,” Chefs on a

Beach: Coco Bay Beach Party,” and a film screening under the stars. Each food and wine paring was exciting and delicious. For example, some dishes from “Kitchen North America,” included avocado leaf-crusted tuna with candied jalapeno tropical fruit marmalade. This was served with a 2011 La Monacesca, Verdicchio di matelica Riserva DOCG ‘Mirum.’ The servings were made even more special and mouthwatering by having the chefs that prepared them come out before each serving and describe in detail what was in the dish and how it was prepared. Master of Wine, Michael Palij, also took great pride and enjoyment in sharing details about the wines that were being served. The Green turtle Club was also running special, nightly room deals to encourage visitors to stay after the meals and parties ended each day.

Above: some of the staff at Green Turtle Club that made the event happen. left to right - Lia Rinaldo, Diane Rolle, Molly McIntosh, Sherrell Cornish, Claudia Sawyer, Renee Smith, Chantelle McIntosh.

Molly McIntosh, Sales Manager at the Green Turtle Club, said about the event, “We were thrilled with DEVOUR The Beach! I felt it was very well received by the community and the tourists that were here. The food was so different and so excellent and the education on wine that we all got was amazing! I am certain that next year’s even will be even better and with more time to plan, advertise, and with experience under our belt, that we can offer even more and get more sponsors to chime in and have this be an annual event that brings in business for all of Abaco. “I feel that part of the charm is having it held on Green Turtle Cay, even though it is a little bit of a challenge to get here if you are not staying here, it makes the event more special, being off the beaten path and in this exotic locale.” The chefs participating were: Jean Joho (trained in the kitchens of France, Italy and Switzeland; Chef Joho was awarded Restaurateur of the Year by Gayot); Michael Blackie (27 years of experience cooking on three continents, Chef Blackie founded Nextfood.Ca in Canada); Tom Fleming (owner and Executive Chef at Crossroads Diner in Dallas, Texas, Chef Fleming pursues comfort food and creating every dish from scratch with as many local ingredients as possible); Craig Finn (owns Chives Canadian Bistro in Halifax, Nova Scotia, which has won numerous prestigious awards, Chef Finn is the author of several cookbooks); Eric Williams (Executive Chef and owner of Momocho Mod Mex, El Carnicero Tamaleria, Jack Flaps and the Happy Dog Restaurants located in Cleveland, Ohio. Chef Williams was nominated by the James Beard Foundation for

“Best Chef-Great Lakes Region.”) The Master of Wine was Michael Palij. Mr. Palij provided an excellent and diverse selection of wines throughout the event while providing insightful commentary on the origins and flavours of the wines. Chef Michael Howell is the Executive Chef at the green Turtle Club Resort & Marina and was instrumental in organizing this culinary event.

Business 132 apply at Baker’s Bay Job Fair

The fair that was to take place between 10:00am and 2:00pm but had to be extended beyond 6:30pm so all the applicants could be interviewed. According to Mrs. Lightbourn, one hundred and thirty two applicants were processed. As they waited to be interviewed, people sat facing a big screen, showing views of the resort and the on-going construction. A meeting was held the following day between the Director of Residential Services, Mr. Wasipha Francis, Mrs. Lightbourn

and two Human Resources coordinators, Ms. Kenya Farqharson and Ms. Adgadell Adderley. The Director of the Residential Department was also present. After reviewing the screen sheets, approximately twenty people were selected for further investigation and subsequent interviews. Line cooks and stewards will be chosen after a meeting with the Executive Chef.

Epic Battery makes donation to Marsh Harbour Volunteer Fire and Rescue Above: Mrs. Anne Lightbourn, Dir. of HR, interviewing an applicant on April 3. By Mirella Santillo People arrived by the dozens to the Baker’s Bay Golf and Ocean Club Job Fair to apply for positions in the exclusive resort. By 10:00 am on April 3, at which time people were to be registered for job applications, a crowd had already formed by St John’s Anglican Church Hall. Approximately thirteen people were needed in the residential Department as well as line cooks, stewards and golf maintenance staff. House Keepers, Space Cleaners and House Men were needed before the Easter Holidays as approximately two hundred Club members were expected to arrive at that time.

The Director of Human resources, Mrs. Anne Lightbourn, one of eight Baker’s Bay personnel conducting interviews, explained that she was looking for “people looking for a career, not just a job.” She was hoping that the applicants would read the Vision and Mission guides set on each interview table. “We want people who will grow with the company, one of the best companies to work for nationwide, people compatible with the environment and our customer service.” To expedite the process, applicants were to bring with them relevant documents such as a driver’s license, police certificate, information on schooling, NIB insurance card and letters of reference.

Epic Battery of Marsh Harbour, Abaco donated batteries valued at $1200 to the Marsh Harbour Volunteer Fire and Rescue for the department’s fire engines. The generous donation was received gratefully by Fire Chief Danny Sawyer (Pictured on the left) and Fire Captain Earlyn Baillou (not pictured). Shane Evans, manager of Epic Battery (pictured on the right) made the donation on behalf of the company.

Book Review The Candy Striped Lighthouse By Jennifer Hudson I have just had the pleasure of reading ‘The Candy Striped Lighthouse’ by Elizabeth Webb. I had heard of this book, which was just released at the beginning of this year, and had believed it to be a children's book. However, on perusing this book I have discovered it to be a delightful poem which can be enjoyed by people of all ages. This captivating poem is not only entertaining but tells an important story. Mrs. Webb has succeeded in giving a potted history of the Hope Town Lighthouse and a simple explanation of how it works. She has also portrayed the pride of the people of Hope Town in their very special lighthouse and how devastating it would be if it this unique landmark, which is the last hand wound Fresnel Lens kerosene mantle lighthouse in the world, ever became automated. She encourages everyone who comes to these shores "to give their support to the Abaco folks” to help preserve this unique Lighthouse. This book is exquisitely illustrated by Bruce Johnson whose brightly coloured and detailed pictures add light and lustre

which bring the words of the poem to life. One could spend hours poring over the minute details of his illustrations and experiencing the landmarks and characters of Hope Town through his artwork. ‘The Candy Striped Lighthouse’ would be a wonderful keepsake for all visitors who come to our shores and admire this beautiful and unique Lighthouse, but also as a coffee table book for locals and gifts for grandchildren, nephews and nieces. Included at the end of the book are articles about the Bahamas Lighthouse Preservation Society and the Hope Town Writers Circle plus geographical and historical information about The Bahamas and Hope Town in particular, illustrated by maps and charts adapted from ‘The Cruising Guide to Abaco’ by Steve Dodge. The book also comes with a supplement which includes the poem and a large illustration of the Lighthouse overlooking Hope Town Harbour. The author, Elizabeth Webb, who has written prose and verse since her childhood, has been a winter resident of Hope Town for many years. She is a published author of a series of ‘Madrigal’ books for children and poetry and short stories in literary magazines in the U.K. She helped found the Hope Town

Writers Circle. Artist, Bruce Johnson, whose whimsical pen, ink and watercolour artworks are in collections worldwide, has made Hope Town his “winter haven” for the past 25 years. ‘The Candy Striped Lighthouse’ is

available from Abaco Treasures in Marsh Harbour, and Ebb Tide Gift Shop and the Abaco Inn on Elbow Cay. A significant portion of the income from the book will support the Elbow Reef Lighthouse Society in its endeavour to preserve this unique Lighthouse.

Director of Fire Services “World’s Shortest St. visits MHVFR Paddy’s Parade” held in Marsh Harbour

Above: The Director of Fire Services for The Bahamas, Walter Evans (center), with volunteers of the Marsh Harbour Volunteer Fire & Rescue. By Timothy Roberts The Director of Fire Services for The Bahamas, Walter Evans, visited with Marsh Harbour Volunteer Fire and Rescue (MHVFR) thanking them on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Ellison Greenslade, for “the fine work you continue to do here in Abaco”. Mr. Evans said that the department “is a very import fire service here within Abaco; without you I don’t know what we could have done when we had the Pigeon Pea fire, the warehouse fire and the many other fires you fight from day to day.” He said “It is because of you who are a part of the volunteer team, you all are important.” Mr. Evans told the room of volunteers that theirs is a “noble profession, and in this profession you have to have a sense of brotherhood and a love for people. You have to have a love for mankind, and a car-

ing spirit to be in this profession. That’s the only way we can succeed.” He said that no matter what differences firemen may have with each other while off-duty when the alarm goes off they have to come together and behave as one: “one in purpose, one in unity, one in what we do.” He said that in Abaco the fire department has limited resources “yet you do so much; so I am indeed happy to see the performance that you do, the commitment that you exhibit and also the sacrifice you give as you give so much to this community; we are pleased.” Mr. Evans assured the firefighters that in his capacity as director of fire services for the country He will do whatever he can do to “assist in terms of augmenting the service that you do, in terms of training, whatever we can do, whatever we can offer, we will do just that to assist you.”

Above: Irish enthusiasts on their way to Snappas Bar for the evening. By Timothy Roberts A large group of persons with Irish roots, or at least a love for the Irish, gathered together at Memorial Park for the world’s shortest – approximately a quarter mile – St. Paddy’s Day Parade on March 17. The Sixth Annual Parade, which was started by the Strawberry Monkey Yacht Club, included boaters, second-homeowners and residents of Abaco who came adorned in green, with beads and shamrock flags and the usual shenanigans. Participants of the parade marched

from Memorial Park, horns and kazoos blaring, stopping at Jimmy’s Wines and Spirits to receive a complimentary Sands beer and then finishing their march at Snappa’s – the Irish-Pub-for-a-night. John Jensen, organizer of the event, said “it is gratifying to see this many people turnout and have a little fun.” He said it is a family event and children and pets are welcome, all wearing green of course. The Strawberry Monkey Yacht Club also sponsors Bocce on Sundays at their club house across the road from Snappa’s.

Local is first Bahamian to become Certified Helicopter Instructor By Timothy Roberts On March 20, 2014 Brandon Sawyer, son of Beth and Bernice Sawyer and grandson of well-known Abaconian Jack Lowe, completed an intensive course at Bristow Academy in Titusville, Florida becoming the first known certified Bahamian Helicopter Instructor. Now twenty-six years-old, Brandon began his helicopter career in 2012, fulfilling a lifelong dream. The program included Private Pilot, Instrument Rating and Commercial License. He passed the Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) course at the same day he completed the Professional Pilot Program. “The Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) course was a very challenging experience and I learned a lot about aviation and a lot more about myself,” he said. “Through the fundamentals of instructing it exposed me to the process of learning and human behavior and how it impacts aviation, allowing me to evaluate risks to become a safer pilot.” He is planning now to go to Pensacola, Florida to do helicopter tours with a company called the Wrong Brothers Flight Training Wing and will help as a helicopter instructor as well. When he goes back he will look to get his fixed wing pilots license as well, which may also make him a the first dual rated Bahamian pilot. Brandon said he did not have a smooth path to his dream and said he had to overcome some adversities. “I have had to push; when things were

against me I remembered that any dead fish can drift downstream, but it takes a live fish to swim up it. I kept pushing forward and never gave up on what I wanted to do.” He encouraged young people to “look for your hopes and dreams in a way to get there, and when you get to where you want to be, keep looking forward. Don’t ever settle for something you don’t want.” He said it has been a really challenging and rewarding experience and he has met a lot of good friends from across the world at Bristow Academy. He said he is grateful to the Designated Practical Examiner (DPE) Dave Thompson – a Vietnam Veteran who had 27,000 hours in flight time and a very experienced guy – who was “extremely tough to please and a good example to follow.” He added that the instructors he had, particularly Ross Ansell and Tony Ring, were “a tremendous influence on me and helped make me a better pilot.” He said he is thankful to the many persons who supported and encouraged him while pursuing his dream, especially his parents. Brandon said “It’s a beautiful thing; learning to fly and aviation. Once you have flown you will forever walk the ground with your eyes skyward.” “It’s something freeing and I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else.”

Above: Brandon Sawyer overcame a great deal of adversity to pursue his dream. Today he is a Certified Flight Instructor for helicopters. This makes him the first Bahamian to achieve this. He thanked his supporters for helping make it happen. Left to right - Brandon Sawyer, Bernice Sawyer and Beth Sawyer.

No.

Why? To be fair we’re getting close, or at least there seems

to be some action. Staff are being trained and Customs & Immigration have been given the green light to begin moving to the new terminal. FES Construction has even said that all work to be done on the interior is fully completed. It’s a good thing, because we are so late in moving into the “new” terminal that it has already started growing mold in some places (see above picture.)
