June 2011

NEWS FROM THE CHAIR Dear Troys It seems ages since the Annual General Meeting and I should like to thank all of you who voted for me. It has been a busy period for Troy Players since Friday 18 th April. Most of this time has been taken up with “Murder in Play” our Du Maurier Production. This was a complete sell out and a great success. Many of our loyal fans were unable to buy tickets for this production because of its popularity, but it did mean that Lesley wasn’t short of helpers for Front of House. All Front of House helpers MUST be a member of Troy Players. If you have let your membership lapse, get in touch with Katie (see list at end for contact details). Membership MUST be paid by end of June. Terry Dooley did a wonderful job of directing this play and we all enjoyed a relaxing, stress free time with plenty of laughs. The part of Boris Smolensky was ably played by Ed Blincoe at short notice. As many of you will know, Andy de Grey-Warter is unwell and felt unable to continue with this role. We all wish him well and a speedy and complete recovery. As we now have to keep our flats, blacks, sound and lighting equipment etc., in a container at Dainton’s, we have to be really well organised. Otherwise numerous trips to the lock up are required. It has been a worrying time, but I am really surprised how well it all worked out. We have found a very helpful, and reliable, man with a very large van. He is willing to load and unload, making a lighter job for our helpers. Because of Town Hall bookings we had to strip the set from 4.30p.m. on the last Friday of the Festival. It is quite a task and I was impressed by the way it worked. Andy McCartney, our competent professional, was unable to be at the Town Hall from 4.30p.m. and as he and Ed had built the set, there could have been a problem dismantling. Who would know where the screws were? We had such a good dismantling crew that everything is now safely put away until our next production in November. We already have the Town Hall booked. The play is to be directed by Jo Yelland and will run from Wednesday 9th to Saturday 12th November inclusive, but more of this later. Tessa and Katie are to meet with Sally Vincent and the Town Hall Committee in order to put a good case forward for returning our flats to the Town Hall loft. We shall then rent, or buy, a smaller container. We have had offers to put a container on land close to Fowey, but none of it is ideal and it is expensive.

COSTUMES: We are still lucky enough to be able to store our costumes in Boots the Chemist. There has been a thorough overhaul and Tessa Williams is now our Wardrobe Mistress. Should you wish to borrow any costumes, please borrow through Tessa. It is very important to our relationship with the chemist that only one person is in charge. We do not want to have to find another home for our costumes. OPEN STAGES: As you have probably read in Fowey News, we have been very lucky to have been accepted by the Royal Shakespeare Company for their “Open Stage” project. Jules Jonklaas, who is directing this play, has chosen the “Wyrd Sisters” by Terry Pratchet and Stephen Briggs. This is a play loosely based on “Macbeth”; the chosen play had to have a Shakespearian theme. As part of the scheme, we have been invited to attend two workshops on acting, directing, stage management etc. These will be run by R.S.C. practitioners and are to take place on 11th and 12th June, but more of this in the next news letter. PLAY READING: The Play Reading Group, which meets roughly once a month, is still going strong. So far we have read “Liaisons Dangereuses” and Pygmalion”. The next play reading is on Monday 27th June at 7.30p.m. in the Safe Harbour and we shall be reading the “Wyrd Sisters”. Do come along and bring a friend. You do not have to be a member of Troy Players to attend. The idea of the play reading is to give people an opportunity to read plays that we would not necessarily consider performing. Anyone can choose a play. So, if you have a play you really like and would perhaps like Troy Players to perform, come along and we will read it. SOCIAL EVENTS: Chrissie is very willing to organise any social event you fancy. So far we have two events organised: President’s BBQ on Friday 1st July at 6.30p.m. in Tessa Williams’ garden. Offers of salads and puddings would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Tessa on 01726 832508 or gerry.vertue@btinternet.com. A Fowey River Boat Trip on Friday 2nd September at 6.15p.m. leaving Town Quay at a cost of £8.00 per person. Please ring Chrissie on 01726 815382 or ChrissieCheshire@foweyharbour.co.uk.

There is a group of us going to the Fowey River Lions “Music in the Park on Friday 24th June at Boconnoc. The idea is that we all buy our own tickets and then join together for drinks and a picnic. Once again, contact Chrissie.

There are many talented theatre companies who are putting on shows in Cornwall this summer. They are as follows: The Miracle Theatre Company – “Death of Sherlock Holmes”. Bish Bash Bosh – “Surfing Tommies” Theatre-Set Up – “Much Ado About Nothing” Kneehigh at the Asylum – “Midnight’s Pumpkin” and “Wild Bride”. Also, our own Tim Caulfield is appearing in “The Crucible” at the Acorn Arts Centre, Penzance on Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th July. Please get in touch with Chrissie if you would like to see any of these. TROY PLAYERS T-SHIRTS: Chrissie has a few T-shirts available for sale: Ladies ¾ sleeve XL – 5 (more like L) Polo Shirts L–3 M–3 She is ordering more, but needs your orders now. Best wishes to you all and hoping to see you, with a bottle, at the BBQ on Friday 1st July. Jenny 01726 832267 jen@ablincoe.com
