Marshalltown Youth Foundation The Marshalltown Youth Foundation (MYF) seeks to remove barriers preventing Marshalltown youth from participating in activities. Based on research showing participation in activities and the relationships that result are two top factors in success after high school, MYF supports low-income families in getting kids involved. One very successful program is the Musical Instrument Lending Library. MYF collects instruments that are no longer being used, has them refurbished and loans them to kids who would not otherwise have the chance to participate in Marshalltown’s award-winning band program. Research shows the positive affect of music on learning math and reading. MYF also recognizes the benefits of students being associated with other goal-oriented peers, of learning the value of practice, and having another caring, responsible adult in the life of the student.

Mega-10 The Mega-10 committee (Marshalltown Economic Growth Association) is a 501c3 and was started in 1989. The “10” stands for the organization’s aim of making Marshalltown a “Perfect 10.” Mega-10 has been responsible for over $1.5 million in projects that have made a positive impact in the city, including new bike trails and softball diamonds, to the most recent project — renovating Mega-10 Park. Revamping Mega-10 Park, which is located adjacent to the aquatic center, was a communitywide initiative. With the assistance of over 100 donors, plus the fundraising, marketing and handson efforts of the Iowa Valley Leadership (IVL) class of 2017, the newly updated park was formally dedicated on June 29, 2017. It is now home to a sports gravity rail, a zipline, new playground equipment, a children’s fitness area, and a 50x75 foot children’s discovery garden, complete with flowers and tomato, pepper, bean and corn plants. Youngsters from Woodbury Elementary School painted the fence’s pickets during art classes, while volunteers and members of the IVL class put the pickets together. 4 - Points of Pride 2018

STEM The areas of science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, have been an area of great focus for the Marshalltown Community School District in recent years. Project Lead the Way (PLTW) at Marshalltown High School is part of a nationwide effort to get kids interested in STEM fields. The high school has PLTW-certified biomedical science and engineering programs, and events like Summer STEM Camp keep area kids engaged even when school is out.

F-4 Phantom Jet

It’s been approximately 24 years since the F-4 Phantom jet arrived in Marshalltown on its mission to honor veterans and inspire young people. Veteran Jeff Heiden, who was responsible with getting the Air Force plane to town along with his brother Chris Heiden, said it has been a success. “It honors all of our veterans in the area and inspires young people for military service, Jeff Heiden said. Local attorney Joe Latham flew the jet on combat missions during the Vietnam War. Thousands of people see the jet each day as they drive past the American Legion Golf Course on Sixth Street. Many bus tour groups stop by annually and get an up-close look.

The Gallery Garden The Gallery Garden — Marshalltown’s newest attraction — received a grand welcome recently from Marshalltown officials and residents. Under a bright and warm Indian Summer sun, visitors packed the area adjoining the historic Kibbey Building in the 100 block of East Main Street. A seven-foot tall, fourfoot wide steel butterfly which sits high on the east Kibbey Building wall overlooks the Gallery Garden, “symbolizes the metamorphosis of the Kibbey Building and Gallery Garden, according to a site promotional piece.

Marshalltown Regional Partnership

Marshalltown Lions

The Marshalltown Regional Partnership (MRP) came into being on Jan. 2, 2014, after a group of business leaders brainstormed ways of developing an umbrella organization to help make three of the city’s business-oriented non-profit organizations become more efficient: the Marshalltown Area Chamber of Commerce, Marshall County Economic Development and the Marshalltown Convention & Visitors Bureau. The agency’s mission statement is “to provide strategic leadership and facilitate collaboration.”

For decades, Marshalltown Lions and Lionesses have distinguished themselves by providing eyeglasses and hearing aids to those in need, as well as contributing generously to many civic endeavors. The Noon Lions meet the first three Mondays each month at the American Legion Golf Course Club House. The Lioness meets monthly at 6 p.m. on the second Monday at the First United Church of Christ, and the Marshalltown Evening Lions meet the first and third Wednesdays of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Salvation Army.

Marshalltown Area United Way

Spread the Words — Read by 3rd

The Marshalltown Area United Way supports several care agencies and initiatives in the community, including Youth and Shelter Services of Marshall County, House of Compassion, Big Brothers Big Sisters and over 20 others. United Way also holds an annual fundraising event for those organizations and their efforts.

Spread the Words - Read by 3rd!, or RB3 for short, is a joint early reading initiative cosponsored by Mid-Iowa Community Action (MICA) and the Martha-Ellen Tye Foundation. The program aims to get 90 percent of Marshalltown children reading at grade level by third grade.

Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA The YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association) in Marshalltown has been a hub for community wellness, recreation and a forum for developing leadership skills in youth for over 140 years. In 1926-7, a fundraising campaign was conducted to remodel the upper floors of the YMCA for use by the YWCA. A sum of $70,000 was raised, and efforts to place both agencies under one roof were successful. The agencies became the first, and longest running, joint YMCA-YWCA in the nation’s history. In early 2000, a three-phase plan was introduced to tackle the following: open a new wellness/fitness center to be called the Horne-Henry Center, renovate the Old Y (Cultural Center) which houses groups and agencies affiliated with the Y’s mission, and expand the Horne-Henry Center. Today, the joint facility is home to a competition lap pool, recreation pool, two full court gyms, a racquetball facility, aerobics studios, a spinning room, a track, weight rooms, day care, a party room and more, housed in a 120,000 square foot facility. Swimming programs for all ages, massage therapy, LIVESTRONG programing, diabetes prevention, fitness classes, dance, martial arts, baseball, basketball, soccer, football and volleyball are just some of the programs offered. 20 - Points of Pride 2018

Woodbury Elementary School dual-language program One of the Marshalltown Community School District buildings, Woodbury Elementary School, offers area families a unique opportunity: to send their children to one of Iowa’s two public schools with a full K-4 dual-language program. The curriculum is taught in English and Spanish, and began in 2002 with a $5 million federal grant. Children are taught math, reading and science in Spanish, while literacy and social studies are taught in English. The program is meant to serve the district’s English language learning (ELL) students and help them acquire a higher level of English understanding.

Glick-Sower House The Glick-Sower House, a Gothic/Revival Italianate brick house located at 201 E. State St., operates as a museum, and is maintained by the Susie Sower Trust, and by the Historical Society of Marshall County. It was built in 1859 by Dr. George Glick, a prominent Marshalltown businessman and one of the city’s first postmasters. In 1870, Mr. Glick sold the home to George Sower, a man of German origin. Between 1870 and 1900, Sower and his wife Susanna built on to their home. Perhaps the best known Sower offspring is fifth child, Susie. She resided in the Glick-Sower home until her death on March 19, 1952. Besides the addition of electricity and running water, Susie lived in the home very much like out of the turn of the 20th century, as if by her own choosing, she decided to reside in a self-made time capsule. She was the last surviving member of the family, outliving her five siblings, none of whom had any children. In her will, she left all the family’s silverware (leaving none for use in the museum) and money to family friend Estelle Hess, and bequeathed the home and its contents to a trust for use by the Historical Society of Marshall County, where Susie served as a secretary and longtime supporter. The residence is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. 28 - Points of Pride 2018

Matthew Edel Blacksmith Shop The Matthew Edel Blacksmith Shop, located at 214 1st Street in Haverhill, is a step back in time to the turn of the 20th century, largely preserved the way the blacksmith left the shop after his death in 1940. Edel started the shop in 1883 after coming to Iowa from Stuttgart, Germany. It remains a rare sight to see because of how complete and well-preserved the shop and its contents are. The Edel family donated the shop to the State Historical Society of Iowa in 1986, and the Historical Society of Marshall County manages it. Since that time, efforts have been made to document the shop’s 4,486 artifacts. The blacksmith shop is open Memorial Day through Labor Day, noon to 4 p.m, with free admission. Group tours are welcome by contacting the Historical Society of Marshall County. 30 - Points of Pride 2018

New public safety facility Voters overwhelmingly approved a $17.5 million joint Marshalltown Police/Marshalltown Fire project in August, 2016 after earlier rejecting a police-only facility on 6th Street — at a site known as the Old Crosby Swimming Pool near the entrance to the American Legion Golf Course. A local citizen’s advisory committee chaired by Attorney Paul Peglow, recommended the city build a new joint facility. The police building at 22 N. Center St. and the fire house at 107 S. First Ave. — have serious building or size deficiencies — and remodeling options for both were ruled out by all as being cost prohibitive. Also involved were Prochaska & Associates of Omaha, Neb. The firm was hired by the city in the fall of 2015 after a competitive process. Occupancy is scheduled for December of 2018.

Change came to the downtown in 2002, when Marshalltown became a Main Street community. The Marshalltown Central Business District (MCBD) is operated by a volunteer board of business owners, community members, and business professionals. Volunteers have put in over 55,000 hours to improve the community environment while preserving the past. Marshall Economic Development From funding Main Street businesses to industrial recruitment/retention to housing to education, Marshall Economic Development has touched the lives of every county resident since forming in 1992. MED President Tom Deimerly said the organization prides itself in providing business retention, energy efficiency opportunities, financial packaging assistance, site location/selection assistance and permit assistance among others. Historically, MED played a major role in making Highway 330/65 four-lane as well as U.S. 30. MED was instrumental in Alliant Energy’s selection of Marshalltown as site for the new, $650 million Marshalltown Generating Station, which required more than two years to construct and went online April 1, 2017.

Heart of Iowa Trail Running 33 miles, the Heart of Iowa Nature Trail is a joint effort of Marshall and Story counties, and is part of the coast-to-coast American Discovery Trail network. A trail head can be found in Melbourne, and the route runs northeast to southwest through the county, with a large segment mirroring U.S. Highway 330. The trail makes a pass by Rhodes before entering Story County. Activities include bicycling, running, hiking, horseback riding, wildlife watching, cross country skiing, picnicking and more.

Darwin Judge Park A number of years ago Marshalltown dedicated a local park to a native son and fallen hero. Darwin L. Judge Park can be accessed from the 1200 block of South 12th Street. On April 29, 1975, L/Cpl. Judge, 19, accompanied by fellow Marine Security Guard Cpl. Charles McMahon, 21, of Woburn, Mass., were on guard duty at Post 2, Tan Son Nhut airport when a North Vietnamese rocket struck their position, killing them. They died just hours before the beginning of the evacuation of Saigon, Operation Frequent Wind, which ended April 30. Many Central Iowa sons and daughters heeded the call to duty during the conflict, and 31, including Judge, paid the ultimate price. The Vietnam War Memorial at Marshalltown’s Iowa Veterans Home lists 30 casualties and one Missing in Action, although that MIA was later declared Killed in Action. 40 - Points of Pride 2018

UnityPoint Health-Marshalltown In August of 2015, a $35-million Medical Park opened near the intersection of Highway 14 and 30, across from Marshalltown Community College. Managed by UnityPoint Health-Marshalltown it offers an award-winning Wound Clinic, Urgent Care and more. Winners never tire of challenging themselves to attain distinction and excellence. That clearly applies to the Wound Healing Center team. For the second consecutive year they were presented a Center of Distinction award by Healogics, a Jacksonville, Fla. based company. Healogics supplied UPH-M two hyperbaric oxygen chambers for use in wound care. Hyberbaric oxygen therapy helps the body’s oxygen-dependent, wound-healing mechanisms function more efficiently. Healogics also presented the team the esteemed Center of Excellence award. Meanwhile, the Cardiovascular Cath Lab at UPH-M comprises the most advanced practices and technology in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease, as well as peripheral vascular disease. With premiere cardiologists from the Iowa Heart Center, the Cath Lab provides patients with quality care close to home. And then for minor illnesses or injuries, Urgent Care can provide treatment for nonemergency situations including burns, colds, cuts, allergies, flu, fractures, infections, sprains and more.

Marshalltown Generating Station A local project which broke ground July 15, 2014, cost nearly $650 million and ranks as the largest economic development initiative in Marshalltown began generating electricity April 1, 2017. Officially, it is known as the Marshalltown Generating Station, named by owner Alliant Energy. Aptly named, it started generating power April 1, 2017 for not only Marshalltown customers, but for other Alliant customers statewide. But behind MGS is several acres of cable, concrete, piping, steel and thousands of gallons of water. Its mission: Supply reliable, secure and safe energy to 500,000 customers and more for the next 30-40 years. 44 - Points of Pride 2018

Marshalltown Farmer’s Markets Nestled in a rich agricultural area, Marshalltown residents and visitors can enjoy two separate farmers markets. Local vendors bring their bounty to the city between May and October outside the Marshalltown Mall. The Cartwright Pavilion farmers market is also available twice a week seasonally. The two markets offer customers a wide range of vendors and products, many of which are produced by Marshall County and Central Iowa residents.

Marshalltown Business-Education Alliance The mission of the Marshalltown Business-Education Alliance is all in the name: the local business community, the Iowa Valley Community College District and the Marshalltown Community School District have partnered to strengthen the relationship between education and business. The group’s goals include removing barriers and expanding education, ensuring parents recognize the value of education, guiding and defining success, and improving perceptions of the Marshalltown educational system, among others.

Marshalltown Skate Park Scooters, skateboards, bikes and more are welcome at Marshalltown Skate Park, which offers a half pipe, quarter pipe and grind rails. The annual Skatepark Fest is held in June and offers competition and live music.

Henry Anson Henry Anson (1826-1905) founded the city of Marshalltown. He was a well-respected industrialist, businessman and general promoter of the city. Anson had even lobbied to get Marshalltown named the capital of Iowa, and successfully got the county seat moved from Marietta to Marshalltown in 1859. Wanting to develop the young city of Marshalltown’s industry, Anson established the first sawmill, located on Linn Creek. He founded the Anson Brick and Tile Company, and later, the Anson Coal Company. He was elected justice of the peace in 1852, serving for eight years. In 1891, he was elected as mayor of Marshalltown. He was popularly termed “Hank, the Red-headed Yankee.” He died from pneumonia on Nov. 30, 1905, at his home, located at 802 S. 3rd Ave, at the age of 79. His body lay in state in the courthouse rotunda, and Mayor O. L. Ingledue ordered all businesses to suspend operations during his funeral service. Anson was buried on the high point of Founders’ Hill in Riverside Cemetery. In 2004, a statue in Anson’s honor was placed at the entrance of the Marshall County Courthouse, to commemorate Marshalltown’s sesquicentennial in 2003. The statue was sculpted by Chris Bennett of Keosauqua. 48 - Points of Pride 2018

Historic Log Cabin on Mormon Ridge Iowa River Trail Once complete, a 34-mile multipurpose recreational trail will connect seven communities in Marshall and Hardin counties, linking Marshalltown, Albion, Liscomb, Union, Gifford, Eldora and Steamboat Rock. The Iowa River Trail will offer Marshalltonians safe access to the Linn Creek Recreational Trail, the Marshalltown YMCAYWCA and adjoining aquatic center, Grimes Farm, and more. It will offer users opportunities ranging from camping to hiking to snowmobiling. TRAILS, Inc. a not for profit organization, spearheading fundraising for the Marshall County portion, endeavors to have the trail too the Marshall-Hardin county line by 2020.

The Historic Log Cabin, located at 1482 Mormon Ridge Rd. in Albion, was originally owned by William C. Ruddick and family. Ruddick and his wife Absillet hailed from Indiana, and arrived in Marshall County in 1856. After his death in 1871, the land was left to his minor sons, Isaac and Jesse, and sold several times. Albert and Wilma Farland bought the land and cabin in 1949, residing there until 1895. The cabin sat vacant until restoration efforts began in the summer of 1989. The 16’x20’ cabin was donated to the Marshall County Conservation Board (MCCB) by Marvin and Joann Thomas. In November of 1989, the MCCB and the Historical Society of Marshal County began to renovate and preserve the cabin. A new limestone foundation was built, repairs were made to the structure, and new doors, windows, shutters, roof and a porch were added.

Marshall County churches Marshall County has a rich history of offering its residents a variety of houses of worship. St. John Evangelical Church, located at 1956 Durham Ave in State Center, was founded on April 17, 1865 with nine charter members. On Jan. 1, 1945, the church was destroyed in a fire and rebuilt in 1948 with a dedication ceremony held April 16, 1950. A North German Baroque pipe organ in the choir loft commands attention as well as the striking stained glass windows encasing the structure, depicting scenes from Jesus’ life according to the Gospel of John. One of Marshalltown’s oldest places of worship — First Presbyterian Church — is located at 101 S. Center St. The church was first established on March 15, 1858, with the building constructed in 1864. Wanting to meet the needs of a burgeoning congregation — totaling nearly 300 members — the elders and trustees discussed the prospect of building a new church, erecting the structure at its current location of 101 S. Center St. On March 24, 1907 the project was sanctioned, and by the autumn, the cornerstone was laid. The church was dedicated on Sept. 13, 1908. Today, the church draws roughly 200 worshipers on Sundays. It is known for its active bell choir. St. Mary Catholic Church, located at 9 W. Linn Street, offers a variety of community outreach programs. The church took root in March 1869. The first house of worship was a mere 40x80 feet, and was located at the southwest corner of S. 4th and W. Church St. This met the needs of its parish until 1889. In April 1888, Father Mathias C. Lenihan, the sixth priest to serve the parish, decided a new church, to be called St. Mary, would be erected at the corner of S. First St. and W. Linn St, its present-day location. The church was completed on Oct. 4, 1890. Today, the church is noted for its Mass services offered in both English and Spanish, and its growing Hispanic Ministry led by Sister Christine Feagan, OP. 50 - Points of Pride 2018

Assistance League of Marshalltown

Central Iowa Fairgrounds

The Assistance League of Marshalltown first formed in November of 1938, at the home of Mary Norris. Its goal, in the words of its 15 charter members, is: “To foster interest among League members in the welfare of the community and to make efficient their volunteer service.” Promoting community pride and raising money for area organizations and causes, are its two main objectives. Its most current initiate “My Marshalltown” has the aim of placing painted concrete “M” statues all over the city, with funds going to charitible causes. The organization also cares for the Assistance League Park, located at 1008 E. High St.

For many years, the Central Iowa Fair was held each September on grounds located on East Main Street. In the early 1960s, a drive was under way to move the fair to a new spot. In agreement with the Fair Board, Marshalltown Chamber of Commerce, banks, a Marshalltown industiral group and others, land was purchased from the Knutson family at the corner of South 12th Avenue and Olive Street At this location, buildings, stables and other fair provisions were built. The first Central Iowa Fair was held there in 1964, and the first stock car races were held there in 1965. The Central Iowa Fair is now held every July. Throughout the year, the CIF sponsors swap meets, craft shows and rodeos.

Linn Creek Recreational Trail

Highways 30 and 14

The Linn Creek Recreational Trail is an eightmile segment of a 17-mile hard-surfaced linear trail extending from Riverview Park to Melbourne. The trail and several short loops link areas provide a variety of outdoor diversions: camping at Riverview Park, the Nicholson-Ford Wetlands and OHV Park, the Marshalltown Family Aquatic Center, adult softball and Little League diamonds, playgrounds and picnic areas. Trail users can observe views of river bottom timberland and marshes, as well as prairie grasses and wildflowers. The LCRT is a collaborative project of the City of Marshalltown, Marshall County Conservation, and Region Six Planning Commission.

Can one imagine how different Marshalltown would be without Iowa Highways 30 and 14? Answer: Dramatically. Because both roadways are critical to Marshalltown commerce. Historically, the two are used extensively by Marshalltown businesses to ship and receive goods. Additionally, the highways are used by Central Iowans in neighboring communities who work at local factories. businesses and organizations. More than 20 years ago, Marshall Economic Development officials worked extensively to convince the Iowa Department of Transportation to widen from two lane to four lane major portions of Highway 30 and also 330.

Marshall County Courthouse The Marshall County Courthouse turned 130 years old in 2016. Construction began in 1884, and the building was designed by architect John C. Cochrane of Chicago, whose firm had designed the State Capitol building in Des Moines. The courthouse was dedicated on Nov. 19, 1886. The dimensions were 80 feet by 130 feet and 175 feet tall. It was built of Marshall County limestone from the Le Grand Quarries. The cost of the building was $145,000, and the cost of the ground was $100,000. In 1900, the tower clock was installed. In 1974, 70.8 percent of voters approved a $3.2 million bond issue for renovation. In 1978, there was a rededication ceremony of the courthouse. 52 - Points of Pride 2018

Emergency Food Box The Emergency Food Box is located in a house at 109 S. 3rd St. It formed in 1982 after a task force from Churches United in Compassion and Concern (CUCC) decided there was a need to start a “food box” in Marshall County. It offers its clients access to free meat, bread, pasta, fruit, vegetables, cereal and more, with the edibles sourced locally and from the Food Bank of Iowa. With no paid staff, the Emergency Food Box is dependent upon the generosity of its roughly 100 volunteers. It also offers folks vouchers to purchase milk, eggs and bananas from other entities. People may go there for provisions on a monthly basis, with the amount of supplies given out based on household size. Clients must meet income requirements and get referred from local social welfare agencies. They also must be residents of Marshall County. The facility is open Monday-Friday from 1:30-4:30 p.m.

Martha-Ellen Tye Playhouse The 455-seat Martha-Ellen Tye Playhouse had its opening night on May 9, 1969. It is located at 709 S. Center St. The playhouse came about when, in 1967, Marshalltonians were tasked with deciding whether or not to pass a bond issue granting the building of an auditorium to be attached to Marshalltown High School. Tye, who supported the initiative, promised to match funds if the measure passed. The bond failed, but Tye was undeterred. She decided to build her own theatre on the grounds of the Fisher Community Center, a facility commissioned by her brother Bill Fisher. The playhouse serves as headquarters for the Marshalltown Community Theatre and its various plays, performances and children’s programs. 54 - Points of Pride 2018

Franklin Ticket Booths Local orthodontist John Hermanson continued to believe in a project to renovate the historic tickert booths at Franklin Field, even when estimated cost increased. That belief, along with the effort of volunteers and donors, led to a celebration in 2011 when it was announced $144,000 was raised to renovate the booths where so much local history was made. The funds surpassed the original goal of $130,000. Hermanson learned the booths were due to be demolished by the school district due to their deteriorating condition, which led him to partner with others to raise funds to renovate. Additional funding was received from the local Martha-Ellen Tye Foundation and from Emerson Project Management Fisher Controls.

It was dedicated in 1987 as a gallery for fine art to serve the educational needs of students, employees, and the community as a whole. In conjunction with its educational purpose, the gallery’s goal is to also enhance the overall artistic environment of central Iowa. It was named in honor of Professor Ray Frederick, who was the art professor at MCC for 32 years. The walls have a grey fabric covering which accentuates the hung artworks. Pedestals are also used when displaying 3-dimensional art. The gallery features local and regional artwork, in exhibits that typically last for one month. 6th Street Softball Complex Avid, or casual softball players know where to play in Marshalltown, and that is the 6th Street Softball Complex. Managed by the city’s Parks and Recreation department, the complex provides softball leagues of all kinds for men and women. Adjoining the complex to the west are Marshalltown Football League fields. To the east is the Marshalltown Skateboard Park, one of the most popular parks in Marshalltown, said Matt Gerstandt, owner of Black Tire Bicycle Co. and park sponsor. The Linn Creek Recreational Trail adds to the flavor of the area, as it runs adjacent to the Skateboard Park, Softball Complex, and MFL fields.

Ponds along Merle Hibbs Boulevard The retention pond in the 300 block of West Merle Hibbs Boulevard does more than collect water while serving as a fish and wildlife habitat, it also is the centerpiece for Goldfinch Park. Among its 13.64 acres is a popular trail for bicycling, jogging, or walking.

Futsal courts Marshalltownians, be prepared to learn about futsal — five-a side-soccer. The futsal courts in West End Park will be the first of its kind lighted outdoor complex in Iowa and would engage the local diverse population while serving Marshalltown’s growing need for soccer. Once the project becomes reality, it will further compliment the multimillion dollar City of Marshalltown street and sewer initiatives put in place several years ago.

Volunteer spirit Tallcorn Towers Central to addressing Marshalltown’s low and moderate income housing needs has been major rehabilitation of the Tallcorn Towers (in the former Tallcorn Apartments) to the Marshalltown Senior Residences project (in the former Iowa Wholesale Building). The $11 million Tallcorn investment was coordinated by developer CommonBond of St. Paul, Minn. It currently offers 42-one bedroom, and 7 two-bedroom apartments primarily available for low-income occupants. MSR, developed by the Cohen-Esrey Co., is a decorated, 28-unit affordable housing development, with one and two bedroom apartments available. The Tallcorn and MSR have sustained full, or near-full occupancy since opening.

Members of the UnityPoint Health-Marshalltown Auxiliary are one of the many local organizations who exemplify Marshalltown’s volunteer spirit. For example, for many years volunteers have made 5,000 chicken pot pies and then sold to benefit patients. All Auxiliary revenue from several sources goes directly to patient care — from pillows for mastectomy patients, to a $10,000 donation to the Cardiac Cath Lab, to family room furniture. Annually, the Auxiliary sponsors several nursing scholarships, manages an employee recognition event and a volunteer recognition lunch among others. The Auxiliary’s history harkens back to 1952, when Marshalltown had two hospitals each with its own Auxiliary. They later consolidated.

Marietta Sand Preserve The original 17-acre Marietta Sand Prairie site was purchased in June 1983 and dedicated as a State Preserve September 6, 1984. Funds for this purchase were made available through a donation from Janet Paterson. An addition in 2006 of 212acres to Marietta Sand Prairie was made possible by partnering with Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, the Martha-Ellen Tye Foundation, Pheasants Forever, REAP, Iowa Prairie Network, and donations from many others. The unique property contains almost 56 acres of sand prairie remnant. Sand prairie is among the rarest of prairie types and comprises only a few hundred acres of Iowa’s 35 million acres. In addition, it contains small fens, which are a rare, spring-fed type of wetland with saturated soil. Of the more than 200 plant species found in fens, about 5 percent are listed as threatened or endangered. It is located five miles northwest of Albion. 58 - Points of Pride 2018

Gutekunst Public Library Beginning in 1972, the Gutekunst Public Library has served the people of State Center and surrounding communities since the city was bequeathed the home, grounds and several farms by J.G. Gutekunst and his wife, Angie. All these years later, the library continues to proudly serve the western Marshall County area, carrying out its mission as “The heart of the community, satisfying life-long curiosity. The library offers an extensive physical and digital collection, online local newspaper and community history archives, and free 24/7 wi-fi. In addition, it is the gathering place for the community, offering programming for all ages. Whether your interest is pre-school story time, yoga, cooking, book discussion, knitting, or help with homework or resume writing, the librarians are eager to help. The Gutekunst Public Library is currently undergoing an expansion to nearly double its size and become ADA compliant.

Immigrant Allies Immigrant Allies of Marshalltown was founded in 2010 by a diverse group of community members, as an all-volunteer education and advocacy organization. Acknowledging the immigrant roots we all share, the group recognizes the potential in each one of us — whether new immigrant or longtime resident — to be allies for one another in the community we all share. From organizing events like the CommUnity Potluck and panel discussions, to being a leader on projects like the new local site for the Justice for Our Neighbors non-profit immigration legal clinic, Immigrant Allies is committed to the vision that Marshalltown is stronger when we focus on what we have in common with our neighbors. To learn more, visit immigrantallies.net and follow the group on Facebook.

IVCCD Orpheum Theater Center Through the decades, the complex, located at 220 East Main Street, has played host to movie premieres attended by Hollywood stars, but has also screened movies for everyday filmgoers. Today, the Orpheum continues the rich tradition of being Marshalltown’s sole downtown movie theater. The theater had its grand opening on June 22, 1949. In the 1980s, the Orpheum was divided into two small theaters, then ultimately closed down in 2001. In 2005, the Orpheum Centre, Inc. joined forces with the Iowa Valley Community College District (IVCCD) to repurpose the theater. With $3.4 million poured into the historic building, the project was finished in July 2010, launching the IVCCD Orpheum Theater Center. It is home to an auditorium for screening films, the Black Box room, which can be rented for events, a fully-functioning scene shop in the back of the building, classroom space, and a permanent display called “Iowa Stars of Stage and Screen. In the summer months it hosts free music nights called “Live After Five.”

Binford House The stately 1874 home, located at 110 N. 2nd Ave in Marshalltown, was once the residence of Thaddeus Binford and his family. The wealthy Quaker lawyer hailed from Ohio, and for decades, he and his wife Angelica were known for their interest in civic affairs, and their home today is used as a meeting place for clubs, parties and other social occasions. On March 6, 1930, a letter was read to the Federation from Jessie Binford, offering her family home to the organization. The house was to be given to the Federation with the stipulation that it would never be mortgaged or sold, being used for the purpose of a meeting place for these organizations; if conditions were not met, the house was to be turned over to Binford heirs. While the Federation used the residence throughout the ensuing decades, the deed was not turned over to the organization until 1965. Today, the federation still holds meetings at the residence. It is also available for private parties.

13th Street District Revitalization Recognizing the area as the gateway to the Iowa Veterans Home served as the impetus to transform the vision for the district into reality. The 13th Street District Committee of volunteers worked countless hours, while public, private foundations, personal contributions and private business owners invested over $5 million into the area. The district is home to the Marshalltown Public Art Committee’s (M-PAC) first major public art installation, Echo. The sculpture, by artist Bruce White, has become an iconic image for the district. An Eagle Scout project by Beau Ragland was implemented in 2015 to showcase the dedication to our veterans which commissioned local artist Kamar Essex to paint a mural on a north facing building just south of the Iowa Veterans Home entrance. The revitalization also includes the renovation of two-second story apartments, as well as enhanced recreational opportunities such as the development of the only lighted outdoor futsal court in the State of Iowa. 60 - Points of Pride 2018

Salvation Army The Salvation Army Corps, located at 107 W. State St., has been serving Marshall County since a branch was established here in 1885. People best associate the ringing of bells during the Christmas season with this organization, but the Salvation Army has many other missions as well. Volunteers distribute food boxes to hungry residents each Monday, Wednesday, Friday at 1 p.m. It offers payee services, rent and utility assistance and social programs, including Pathways of Hope, which helps parents and children end the cycle of poverty. It operates a Thift Store at 232 N. 13th St., providing vouchers for people to purchase furnture and clothes. It’s gym provides meeting space for various civic groups, clubs and organizations, often free of charge. A Monday night youth group for kids ages 6-12 provides a free meal and fellowship time. Its corps officers/pastors are Majors Beth and Ben Stillwell.
