A pair of one-score losses and another nine-point setback meant the difference between a Class 5A state playoff berth and the end of the season for the Marshalltown High School football team last fall. The Bobcats went 4-5 and fin ished 25th out of 36 teams in the Iowa High School Athletic Asso ciation’s final Ratings Percentage Index (RPI), resting outside of the top-16 qualifiers and leaving the team to suffer the “almosts” and “what ifs” in search of the pro gram’s second playoff appearance in the last Sixth-yeardecade.Marshalltown

“Kunian is a big senior who’s going to play a big role for us on both sides of the football,” he said. “His development has been pretty special. He took it into his own hands to be consistent, and that starts in the weight room. He’s a strong kid who’s really starting to learn the game a lot more and he’s putting himself into position to be successful.“Jaden lifted with Kunian all summer too. He’s another strong kid and watching his physical de velopment has been fun. I’m ex cited to see his improvement.”

Senior tackles David Santa cruz (6-1, 260) and Clay Goecke (6-2, 225) align on the outside of the front five. Santacruz has been dubbed “the strongest kid in the school” by Goodvin and staff, while Goecke “has a really good feel for “Davidthings.”isobsessed with the weight room, and the big thing he worked on that we’re happy to see is his explosiveness on both sides of the football,” Goodwin added.

head coach Adam Goodvin can ap preciate, however, how that nar row margin helped to motivate a group of 21 returning letterwin ners in the offseason. The Bobcats bring back a big group of experienced players in hopes of hedging the difference between making the playoffs and missing out again. “We’ve got a good group of se niors, 20-some that put in a lot of time in the offseason and we’ve talked about how any success we get this fall is going to be because of the work they put in this sum mer,” said Goodvin. “Our weight room and training have been remarkable this summer. They showed up for everything and I’m excited to see the result. They’re back and they have a lot of experi ence.”There’s not a position group that the Bobcats don’t return at least a portion of last year’s pro duction, if not a bulk of it. And that includes the bulk up front for the Bobcats’ respective lines of scirmmage.Goodvin looks at his offensive and defensive lines as the strength of this team based on the number of returners, their playing expe rience and their passion for the sport.“This is probably the strongest group top-to-bottom that I’ve had since being here,” he said. “Com bine that with knowledge and love for the game, I would say our Oline and D-line is our strength.”

Senior center Nick Lucas (6 feet, 225 pounds) will be a three-year starter, determining the blocking assignments for his unit after consecutive seasons of receiving all-CIML Iowa Confer ence“Helaurels.runs the show,” Goodvin said. “He’s the brains of that group, he makes the calls and checks at the line. He’s a combi nation of experience and the kid lovesFlankingfootball.”Lucas at guards will be seniors Kunian Kuany (6-2, 280) and Jaden Dhyne (6-0, 285), two holdovers who hit the weight room hard in the offseason.

“It’s going to be very beneficial for him.“Clay is another senior that loves the game of football. He’s smart, football smart, has great instincts, and he’s the first one up on a (line)backer just because he understands angles. He’s going to

“I see all nine games are going to be very competitive, and that’s what I want,” he said. “We also see a great opportunity to win a lot of those games as well. In the back of our heads there’s a few losses from last year that we’d like to get back, but we do focus on taking it one week at a “Obviouslytime. Ames is in our minds right now, but looking down the whole schedule we’re excited to play Newton, excited to play Fort Dodge — I think we’re excited to play all these games and we’re also fortunate to play in some really neat stadiums.”

CONRAD — The BCLUW football team hits the field Friday against East Marshall for the first game of the season with a very similar coaching staff, but there’s a new head man on the scene in Conrad — head coach Jeff Pikna. The Comets promoted Pikna to head coach for the 2022 cam paign, and he said one of the big gest pluses of taking on this new role has been the continuity he inherited.“It’snot all completely new and we recognize a lot of the things we did, there was a lot more cama raderie the second time around,” Pikna said. “We knew what we ex pected, knew what to say and do on any given day. It’s an adjustment period, but with the report we have with the students and players it’s much eas ier for them to trust us and pick it up than last year.” BCLUW is coming off a enters new era with familiar faces, small core

TIMES-REPUBLICAN

In the end, it’s all about how well the Bobcats can compete with their opponents, and Goodvin likes the look of this schedule for the second year in a row.

On the defensive side of the ball, Rebik and Smith set the tone as returning linebackers who ranked first and third, respective ly, in tackles for the Bobcats last season. Holmes will step in at the third linebacker spot, with Reed, Loney, Jacob Gudith and Devin Howell providing depth.

The front line boasts plenty of size and strength with Goecke and Bowie playing on the ends and Santacruz, Kuany and Dhyne rotating at defensive tackle. Aiden Draeger, Michael Narvaez, Ty Jones and Lucas also will see time.

The BCLUW football team brings back just six players from last season’s squad. He’s got a motor.” The Bobcats’ experienced, senior-laden line will do its part to protect second-year start ing quarterback Dalen Huston, a 6-4, 205-pound junior who showed improvements each week last season. Marshalltown’s runheavy offensive scheme intends to throw the ball as much as it can — as long as it can do it efficiently. MHS ranked 30th out of 36 teams in 5A last fall with 729 passing yards, though the rushing attack ranked 15th with 1,650 yards. The 70-30 run-to-pass ratio is ideal if the ground game is gob bling up big chunks at a time. If it’s not, the Bobcat offense has to to be more willing to pass and do it cleanly.“Weknow we’ve got some weapons,” Goodvin said. “What are we going to be able to do with it? I don’t know yet. Hopefully a lot because that’s something we’ve worked on quite a bit is our pass ingMarshalltown’sgame.” cast of play makers starts in the backfield. Senior running backs Nick Rebik (5-10, 185) and Malachi Holmes (5-9, 165) have big-play potential and combined for 782 rushing yards and nine touchdowns a sea son ago. Joining the mix will be Tate Riang (5-9, 177), Ace Holmes (5-10, 192), Carter Hunt (5-10, 170) and Caleb Kusserow (5-9, 155), with Seth Smith (5-9, 180) seeing snaps at fullback as well. Holmes and Rebik are the top returning receivers, but senior wide receivers Nile Christensen and James Reed, senior tight end Jackson Bowie and junior wide out Cory Smith all pulled down passes from Huston last fall. Se nior Drew Loney and junior Tre shaun Brooks will add to the mix at receiver this year as well, while sophomore Johan Gomez (6-3, 195) has the size to see regular snaps at tight end. Gomez will also handle a bulk of the field goal kicking duties a year after going 9-for-9 on extrapoint attempts. Brenden Find ers will work into the lineup as a placekicker as well.

The defensive backfield will feature Brayden Weatherly, an honorable mention all-conference pick last fall, as well as Brooks, Hunt, Riang, Smith, Kusserow, Lee and Christensen rotating in. Goodvin even said Huston, though pivotal as the starting quarterback, will get repetitions in the defensive backfield.

The Bobcats’ schedule includes five road games, going to Fort Dodge’s new Dodger Stadium in Week 4 as well as a Week 5 visit to West Des Moines and Valley Stadium. Marshalltown meets Des Moines Roosevelt in Week 7 at Drake Stadium, and Week 8’s contest with Cedar Rapids Jef ferson will be played at Kingston Stadium.Theseason kicks off this Fri day with a trip down Highway 30 for a showdown with rival Ames.

“He’s a kid we could put any where on the field and he’s going to be athletic enough to have suc cess, so we’re going to work him into the defensive backfield ro tation,” Goodvin said. “He’s too good of an athlete not to be out there as much as possible.”

winless 2021 season, going 0-8 and los ing every game by 20 or more points. Six seniors return from that difficult season, and while Pikna said there won’t be huge changes schematically on either side of the ball there are some adjustments being made to put the Comets on better footing. Balancing out the offense was a key point for Pikna, moving slightly away from the run-heavy style of last season. The top rusher returning for BCLUW is one of the six seniors, Tyler Bracy. Bracy ran for 159 yards on 32 carries last season with one score. The leading receiver for the Comets, Connor Lynch, will also be a se nior. Lynch grabbed 14 receptions for 245 yards and three touchdowns.

Pikna said the senior core of this team — which includes Parker Pike, Lane Hartwig, Walker Ashton and Matthew Hunt — has been instrumental in a good fall camp showing from the team. “We’ve kind of put a lot of power in their hands,” Pikna said. “Not necessarily in drawing things up and running things, but more in the sense of team decision making and team camaraderie, stuff like that. As of late especially, we’ve been very happy see ing how they take charge and kind of hold each other accountable without being criti cal of each other. They’re great teachers.”

The schedule isn’t an easy one, with matchups on the docket against Grundy Center and Wapsie Valley in the last two weeks of the season — the top two teams in Class A District 3 last season. BCLUW begins its season with a home matchup against East Marshall, and a road game at Hudson on Sept. 2. On Sept. 9, the Com ets host AGWSR. BCLUW’s other home games include Homecoming against Nash ua-Plainfield on Sept. 23 and the regularseason finale against Wapsie Valley on Oct. 14. The Comets visit North Butler on Sept. 16 and North Tama Sept. 30.

GARWIN —

“Some of our formations will be to get him in 1-on-1 situations because he’s a very special ath lete,” Diederichs said. “So we want to get him the ball as much as possible, but we’ve also got other really good playmakers in Slate and Colin Teske. As an offensive playcaller you don’t want to be one-dimensional, so if [the op ponents] think the ball is going to Jabari every time, we can use that to ourCameronadvantage.”Smith, Wyatt Jack son and Matthew DeSchamp — all seniors — make up GMG’s starting offensive line, while ju nior Anthony Waters will serve as the starting running back. Teske, Witte and Woodbury will be the Wolverines’ playmakers on the outside.Defensively, Austin Pencil joins DeSchamp and Woodbury on the front line, while Jackson and Waters make up the linebacking crew. Kaleb Gill and Teske served as starting cornerbacks in GMG’s opener, and Kupka picked off two passes from his free safety spot. Jackson, a first-team all-Dis trict 4 selection a year ago, is the team’s top returning tackler after making 30.5 stops last fall.

First-year GMG head football coach Devon Die derichs knew well enough not to invest too heavily into his team’s first game of the season against a traditionally strong opponent. After a 56-0 loss at Janesville in Week Zero, it looks like Die derichs’ apprehension was the proper attitude.

“It’s going to be a challenge, every game’s going to be a chal lenge,” Diederichs said prior to last Friday’s season-opening de feat. “We have to prove ourselves to everybody.”TheWolverines host Grand View Christian in Week 1 and begin 8-Man District 4 play at home against Collins-Maxwell in Week 2.GMG went 3-5 overall last sea son with wins over Grand View Christian, Collins-Maxwell and Meskwaki, but the program hasn’t had a winning season since going 5-4 in 2007. Weighing themselves against Janesville won’t do the Wolverines any good, so Died erichs is going to reserve judg ment until the season is done. Stepping into the head coach ing role, however, he was still plenty excited about what he was getting to work with. “I saw a lot of talent when I watched film prepping for the job interview,” Diederichs said. “There’s some mechanical things that I felt like we could fix and have a really good football team.

T-R PHOTO BY ROSS THEDE

The talent’s here, I’ve said that since day one. They have the tal ent here to compete, it’s more that we’ve got to get the fundamen tals and the little things together. We’ve got to fix the mental game, we’ve got to win the mental game before we can do anything else.”

New coach wants Wolverines to reach full potential

“He came in this summer and said ‘I want to play QB’ and he put in the work for it so we’re going to go with him,” Diederichs said. “We’ve got options behind him in cluding Kaleb Gill and Slate Witte, so nothing is set in stone. A depth chart can change even during the game.”Becker and Witte both took snaps against Janesville, as did Rider Kupka, but Becker was the only one to complete a pass. He targeted junior tight end Jabari Woodbury nine times and con nected with him four times for 54 yards.

The Wolverines had a rough go of it in their first game under Diederichs, who served as an as sistant coach to his father, Joel Diederichs, for five seasons at Du rant High School before finding a full-time teaching position and a head coaching gig at GMG. He knew better than to put too much into his team’s debut, taking into consideration the recent his tory of each program. Janesville has been to the playoffs 12 times since 2006, while the Wolverines haven’t advanced to the postsea son since 1999.

By ROSS THEDE TIMES-REPUBLICAN

The most noticeable change is at quarterback, where former wide receiver Brenden Becker has stepped into the role. The senior lefthander had a tough time in the season debut, but Diederichs likes the work Becker put in during the offseason.

REINBECK — Last season was a revelation for Gladbrook-Rein beck on the offensive side of the ball. After years of being a runfirst, run-second offensive team and controlling games by using the clock and keeping the ball. That all changed with the intro duction of Isaac Clark and Drew Eilers to the quarterback position in 2021 — the duo showed a pre viously not-seen ability to spray the ball deep down the field and find receivers both in open spots and tight windows. Clark and Ei lers showed the running ability that prior G-R quarterbacks had also shown, but with an added threat through the air. The wide receiver corps that the Rebels had (which included senior Ethan Gienger and the now-senior duo of Luke Riffey and Caleb Egesdal) played a big role with their abilities to get open looks and make players miss in the open field. The result was an other strong season and playoff appearance, ending with a loss Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrto shire in the first round. This season, head coach John Olson said the run-pass ratio for G-R would not be as extreme. But he also said the Rebels would be evolving the new offense rather than making wholesale changes again. Why? There is more versatility and ability to threaten teams in multiple ways. “If you wanna be one of those top four teams, you’ve got to both run and pass,” Olson said. “We’re gonna be a lot better at running the ball this year. I think there’ll just be a lot more things we’ll be able to do on offense. We’ve got about 10 players that could prob ably play every position on the field. “In practice we’re probably moving around more people than we ever have and we’re doing a lot more skill development.” Clark and Eilers return along

STATE CENTER — West Marshall head football coach Cody Hackett has a feeling that this is the year the rest of the teams in Class 2A District 7 rise up to meet the standard set by his Tro jans.Thankfully the expecta tions are forever engrained in the West Marshall pro gram so there’s no confu sion about what it takes to defend four consecutive dis trict boast a ros ter with 18 seniors on the varsity squad, returning a number of players in every position group in hopes of hauling in a fifth straight district crown.

Trojans chasing a fifth straight district title

Senior center Sam Schaper headlines the group as the district’s reigning MVP lineman. Schaper (6-1, 260), Zach Chaplin (5-11, 210) and Elijah Meester (6-0, 225) make up the Trojans’ strong side, each earning all-district honors of one sort or another last fall. “They have to be better than they were a year ago, communicate better, but I like where we’re at with our progress,” Hackett said of his veteran linemen. Thomas Wilkinson (6-4, 240) and Vincent Clawson (6-0, 205) will help to fill out the line as well.

The same set of players will comprise the defen sive line, as Pfantz, Chapin, Schaper and Meester all have considerable experi ence up front. Pfantz was as disruptive as any down lineman in the state, racking up 56.5 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss and 8.5 quarterback sacks a season ago.

The top returning re ceiver is Grahm Nason, a 6-foot wideout who made nine grabs for 304 yards last fall. The Trojans like to utilize their tight ends in the passing game as well as run blocking, but Hackett said the competition there has been a rotation of mul

“He may not be a vocal leader but he does a lot of great things for us. He leads through his knowledge of the game, his effort and at titude throughout practices and meetings, and he likes to ask questions just to get better.”Running back Ben Gon zalez saw limited carries last season as a freshman, but the graduation of 4,000yard career rusher Preston Pope has left a lot of oppor tunities in its wake. Senior fullback Caden Vellinga was a lead blocker for Hart and Pope a year ago and a capable receiver out of the backfield for the Trojans.

“He’s a beast on defense for us and we expect bigger things this year,” Hackett said. “He’s fast, physical and he catches opposing offen sive linemen off guard with what he’s able to do.” Hart moves down from his safety position to be come a linebacker this sea son, putting all of his 5-10, 190-pound frame to work.

“We alwyas have high expectations for our play ers as coaches and I think that rolls over to kids having high expectations of them selves,” Hackett said. “We’ve had a lot of success the last few“Ouryears.two slogans day-in and day-out are expect to win and dominate. If you go out and do those things with every rep(etition) in the weight room and on the field, the scoreboard will take care of itself.” West Marshall had 10 first-team all-district play ers last season as the Trojans reached the 2A state quar terfinals for the second year in a row. Having finished one win shy of a shot at the state semifinals and the UNI-Dome sort of does the motivating for those return ers, Hackett said. “Yeah we’ve got some young guys but we’ve got some guys coming back with experience, so it’s their turn to step up and step in and be leaders,” he said. “I think we’re in a good spot right now with some experi enced players, but we’ve got some other guys who need to get that experience.” Having a third-year start er at quarterback will go a long way to bringing the rest of the inexperienced offen sive players along, Hackett said. Peyton Hart will call the signals for West Mar shall again and will likely be the featured ball carrier a year after piling up 1,020 rushing yards and a teamleading 21 touchdowns on the ground. He also threw for 744 yards in the Trojans’ run-first style of offense. “When you have a quar terback who is the main guy, he can do a lot of things,” Hackett said of Hart. “Most QBs these days can run, but he’s been in our system and is the starter for the third year now and our expec tations for him are pretty high. He knows our system, he knows our calls, and he’s got to be a leader on the field for us and help get guys in the right position.

Vellinga returns to the group as the top returning tackler on the team (61.5 to tal tackles), and McMorran will get an increased role as a starter this fall. Preston Reese and Car son Davis are going to get the call in the defensive sec ondary along with corner backs Nason and Jace Eich.

TJ Schuler, a senior, would be the team’s starting free safety this Friday if not for a broken hand. An ongoing competition at kicker will potentially see Andrew Tollefson and Wade Weuve taking turns at kickoff or on extra points and field goals.

West Marshall kicks off the new season at home this Friday night, entertain ing the Trojans from South Tama County at 7:30 p.m. Nevada entertains West Marshall in Week 2, and opens District 7 play on the road at South Hamilton in Week“We’ve3. got to be able to run the football because some teams in our district are tough,” Hackett said. “A lot of teams are going to be better than they were a year ago. Iowa Falls-Alden and PCM, they’ll be in the run ning for the district title, and Chariton will be better because it has key players coming back. “We can’t take any game lightly.”

The schedule begins Aug. 26 on the road against North Iowa before the home opener Sept. 2 against Colo-NESCO. Other no table games include a Sept. 23 home game against GMG and a road fixture with de fending district champions Don Bosco on Oct. 7. By NOAH LE GRAND — The 2021 season was not kind to East Marshall football, despite some improvements on the field. A difficult district in Class 1A set the Mustangs up with a schedule includ ing opponents such as Dike-New Hartford, Den ver and Aplington-Parkers burg. East Marshall went 2-6 with wins over BCLUW and Central Springs. After losing a few key contributors but maintain ing a core group of return ers for the 2022 season, head football coach Greg Lee said he hopes the Mus tangs can latch on to what went well last season. “We’re lucky to have a substantial group of seniors to lead us this year and 15 returners,” Lee said. “Being able to pick up where we left off last year is a big ad vantage and we’re starting way ahead of what we did [lastSenioryear].”quarterback Bo Lee is coming off offseason foot surgery but is looking strong in practice, Greg said. He is a big part of the Mustangs’ offensive hopes — East Marshall is try ing to become a more bal anced attack after years of heavy run-first offense, but after attempting to imple ment more open concepts in 2021 with mixed results Greg said an extra year of work is paying some divi dends.Going from an option

“He’s really put the time in in the summer,” Doran said. “He’s happy as he can be and he’s going to be a leader.”Ethan Cruikshank was another name Doran men tioned as potentially being key to the Trojans playing competitively.Theschedule for South Tama is a difficult one just like it was in 2021 — starting with a road game against West Marshall Aug. 26, a game the Trojans lost 45-6. South Tama plays five home games, starting with Saydel on Sept. 2 and end ing with the final game of the season against Hamp ton-Dumont-CAL on Oct. 21. In between, there are matchups with quality op ponents such as Grinnell, Independence and West Delaware.Doran said the hard schedule is just a fact of life in Class 3A. “It is what it is,” Doran said. “West Marshall is the only 2A school we play but they have a great program. “Saydel, even though sometimes their program isn’t the best, they come to win, and they’ve got a new staff and a new style com ing up. Friday nights are not going to be easy by any means.”

“All of those guys have what I feel are good football minds, they have seen things and recognize things to adjust to,” McDermott said. “Hale and Noah in particular have always been really good at that.” Staker and Hulme both saw significant time at quarterback last season, and McDermott said both have shown well under center in “Wepractice.areworking both Hale and Skyler at quarterback and receiver when they are not at quarterback,” McDermott said. “Both those guys are good runners, different style runners. Skyler is more of a banger, power runner, and Hale is very elusive and very shifty.”The Redhawk defense will remain largely unchanged from a season ago, just with a few new wrinkles to take advantage of the team’s“Weathleticism.areprobably going to be a little more multiple than we have been partly because of our experience — we have so many guys that have played a lot of football — and we have some better quickness and speed than we’ve had in the past,” McDermott said. “There are a lot of similarities, I would just categorize it as being more multiple with different looks and different variations that we’ll have.”

“We will run some spread out of the shotgun but we will also be in some I-formation and more of a power-type offense with a short passing game,” McDermott added.McDermott was defensive coordinator during the team’s only state championship in 2010, and he says the guys on this squad want to bring the Redhawks back into the spotlight.“We’ve had some tremendous athletes on those teams, but these guys are good athletes too,” he said. “They can do it if they feel that they can.”

“We’ve had probably one of the better camps and starts to practice than I’ve had in a long time. We’ve got a lot of kids with a lot of great positivity and intensity, we’re having intense practic es and we’re working our butts off.”

that does nothing but help.” Those linemen will be protecting a new quarterback, as senior Drake Crawford takes over the reins after Lane Koch was lost to graduation.“It’llbe his first time starting as a varsity player but his confidence and what he’s put in during the last couple summers, we have a lot of confidence behind him and his attitude is just amazing,” Doran said. While the quarterback is set, and he will have players like Keith Keahna, Tanner Walz and Jesus Wanatee-Romero to use, Doran said the offense will be a fluid unit, changing depending on the opponent. “We are going to make it up, whatever works for us that game is going to work,” he better as a whole because you have your best versus your best, and that makes teams better when you compete every day in practice,” he said. Now that Doran is in his third season and is starting to see the fruits of his labor, he said with how big the team is and how many underclassmen are out, he wants this season to be a rock to build the program on. “I’d like this to be a huge foundation year,” he said. “We have a lot of sophomores that will be playing, we have a big group of juniors and a great group of seniors that are great leaders, so I’d like to make this a huge foundation year and show this program we can build off guys that want to play football.” be a difficult transition. Given McDermott’s place in the program and that he has served as defensive coordinator for the last two years, he said the transition has gone smoothly.“There are several of these guys that I coached not only their brothers but their dad and several uncles,” he said. “Hopefully I did the right things with those guys in the past and that gives me good family and parental support, and that helps a lot.” This season is set up to be a strong one for North Tama football, considering it returns 18 lettermen from last year, including first-team all-district selections Hale Hulme and Tyler Morrison and honorable mentions Skyler Staker, Noah Bond, Zach Greiner and Cory Isenhower.

TAMA — From a pro duction standpoint, the South Tama Trojans are looking at a lot of replace ments for the 2022 football season. Losing all three quarterbacks, four of the team’s top six rushers and three of its top five tacklers on defense, the Trojans are going to rely on underclass men and returning veterans to see if the team can im prove upon a 2-7 record. The Trojans’ schedule won’t be any easier, but head coach Nate Doran said he has been pleased with the start STC has given in practice.“We’ve had probably one of the better camps and starts to practice than I’ve had in a long time,” Doran said. “We’ve got a lot of kids with a lot of great positivity and intensity, we’re having intense practices and we’re working our butts off.” There’s not an easy an swer at quarterback for the Trojans — however, the allaround play of junior Gavin Bridgewater in 2021 (292 rushing yards and 158 re ceiving yards) has given him an opportunity to take the role and make it his own. Doran said it’s not Bridge water’s natural position, but added there’s potential there for him to grow. Other important players on the offensive side of the ball are expected to be No lan Upah, and Rudy Papa kee, who is gearing up to be a senior leader on defense as well.Papakee has gained some weight since last season and bulked up, Doran said, al lowing him to be a more versatile weapon on the de fensive side of the ball and as a running back for STC.

“We did not throw the ball very much last year,” coach Lee said. “We’re thinking we’re going to be able to throw a little more this year and be a little more balanced. We think we’ve got kids who can run with the ball if we get it to them — so we are really hoping to spread the ball a little bit more.” Defensive contributors returning in clude Gage Overton and Tyler Fuller, two of the Mustangs’ top-five tacklers in 2021 and players who will need to take big re sponsibilities after the graduations of Tim Benson and Garrett Kerber. Connor Has sin and Hunter Postel also made an impact on the defensive end, with Postel recover ing a fumble and recording an intercep tion.Special teams seem set to be handled by Jake Farrington and Arifi for the Mustangs. A difficult schedule begins with a road matchup against BCLUW Aug. 26 before home games against Roland-Story and Lynnville-Sully. East Marshall has four home games this year with the final two coming against Dike-New Hartford on Sept. 23 and South Hardin on Oct. 7.

— There’s a lot of new faces taking up impor tant roles for North Tama this season. Gone is the se nior core that propelled the Redhawks to a third-place finish in their Class A dis trict in 2021 with a 6-2 re cord and made a run to the quarterfinals of the playoffs, falling short 28-7 to Grundy Center and missing out on a trip to the UNI-Dome by oneGonegame.are Gabe Kopriva and Devin McKinley, the catalysts for one of the best offenses in Class A thanks to a unique pass-first “runand-gun” approach to the game, along with Adam Greiner and Aiden Zook. Stepping into those roles will be players who had roles last season but will be asked to take greater responsibil ity to keep the Redhawks in the conversation. Michael Schrier, Kolt Knaack and Logan Siemens are three of the players who were bitpart contributors in 2021 but will now step into the spotlight for North Tama. Schrier said the team’s continuity in scheme de spite losing a big group of seniors is one of the reasons the team is optimistic about the year ahead. “It’s going pretty good, taking it one day at a time,” Schrier said. “We got a lot of guys who are similar to the guys we had last year so we’re working on the same scheme. “It’s actually really nice because we got a heads up of what’s going on.” Other returning let terwinners include Ty ler Popelka, Ryan Hosek, Clayton Boldt and Lucas DeBoef. Defense was a key part in the Redhawks’ play off run, and with Kopriva and McKinley out the de fense will take on a different look as well. The leading re turners on defense in terms of tackles are Schrier with 50 tackles last season and 27 solo tackles alongside Hosek with 43.5 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and a half a QB sack. Schrier is the only returner to have forced mul tiple turnovers in 2021 with one fumble recovery and twoDeBeofinterceptions.isstepping into a much bigger role and as one of the team’s captains, he said it’s been an adjustment in figuring out how to uti lize his voice with the roster. “You just gotta teach the youngsters how to do stuff, and that’s kind of fun,” De Boef said. “It definitely feels good because I used to look up to all of the seniors, I just hope they can look up to me the same way I looked up to our past Northseniors.”Tama’s sea son begins on Aug. 26 at home against Belle Plaine. BCLUW, Hudson and Grundy Center (the final game of the regular season on Oct. 14) are the Red hawks’ other home games. Important away fixtures in clude a trip to Wapsie Valley on Oct. 7.
