Harness racing heritage The Grand Circuit returns to the world’s oldest track By BOND BRUNGARD

sports@tcnewspapers.com

B

efore the Indianapolis 500 became a Memorial Day tradition or the speedway at Daytona Beach became a fabled arena for our carbon-fueled lives, horses were the primary source of transportation. They have been racing trotters at the Goshen Historic Track since 1838 on the half-mile oval, and it’s the world’s oldest harness track. Prior to the opening of the track, competition was conducted an early form of street racing. “Everybody thought they had the fastest horse,” said Ross Cohen, the facility’s assistant director of racing, “so they would race on the roads.” Cohen was taking a break from the phone, which was consuming his time a

few days before the 2019 season started Sunday, June 16. That day and June 23 featured matinee races. Grand Circuit races will be conducted July 4-7. In 1911 the Harriman family donated the grandstand, and in 1966 the track as designated a Registered Historic Landmark. As trotters were practicing for the prior the 2019 season inaugural races, construction was ongoing to replace the BOCES barn that was destroyed in a fire Aug. 23, 2017 along with a blacksmith shop and parts of another building. The blaze drew immediate attention from nearby restaurant patrons, who rushed to free horses from the blaze’s harm. “They chased them out of their stalls and away from the fire,” said Cohen. Once in competition, drivers in their

sulkies, their carts, compete for a favorite groove on track that could lead to the front for a possible victory. Pulling those sulkies are horses that may not be the easiest control – but have the ability to cross the finish line first. “Sometimes the craziest son of a gun is the fastest son of a gun,” said Chuck Connor, a driver, after practice, “because he doesn’t know to slow down.” The track is located just off Main Street in the historic village not far from the Harness Racing Museum and Hall of Fame. An induction of two broodmares will be conducted into the Living Horse Hall of Fame July 7. The museum and hall of fame on 240 Main Street are open Tuesday-Sunday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Congresswoman Alexandria OcasioCortez made headlines after she called the fight against climate change “the civil rights movement of our generation.” Although a prevalent global issue, it is important that the conversations surrounding sustainability occur locally, and the Newburgh City Council has begun to take these first steps. The Newburgh City Council listened to a presentation by Dr. Pavlina R. Tcherneva, the Chair of the Department of Economics at Bard College and a researcher for the Levy Economics Institute, at its work session last Thursday. Called, “What’s the Buzz? A family seeks justice Campaign started to keep special needs man from falling through the cracks By ALLY TURK Vinnie Carozza, 25, was arrested in October 2018 and charged with Arson in the third degree. His family members are working hard on getting him back home and shedding light on individuals with special needs in the justice system. Carozza was born with multiple birth defects which began his many surgeries he had from the age of 2 months to 2 years. Carozza was then diagnosed with autism and spent his time in school switching back and forth from special education schools to neurotypical schools. “None of the schools ever seemed to be the right fit for Vinnie,” Joe Carozza, Vinnie’s father, said. “He was either too low functioning or too high functioning so he was continually passed along from place to place trying to fit in but never actually succeeding.” While growing up Vinnie held countless jobs, mowing lawns for neighbors at the age of 13, working at the Renegades Stadium, and an auto shop and farm. Vinnie grew up with his mom, dad and three siblings. When he was 16 his mother died suddenly of a brain aneurysm. Then as his siblings got older and moved out of the house Vinnie wanted to follow in their footsteps, so he and Joe started looking into group homes. Vinnie was living in a group home when he placed a book on the stove and turned on the burner, then placed a fork and battery in the microwave and turned it on. The stove started smoking and set off the fire alarm, no fire or

According to his family, the group home was supposed to be giving their residents one on one supervision, meaning a staff member should be with a resident at all times. Vinnie was left alone during the

incident. Vinnie was then arrested and sent to county jail where he remained for a week until Joe bailed him out. Once he Continued on page 4

What comes to mind when you think about the Town of Plattekill? If its residents have their way, the name Plattekill will conjure images of apple fields, mountain views and lots of new business. Approximately twenty Plattekill residents gathered at the Plattekill Firehouse to attend the second in a series of community visioning workshops to update the Town of Plattekill Comprehensive Master Plan. Required by New York State, a comprehensive master plan incompasses both short and long range views that will both improve and innovate the town. Updates to the master plan will become the basis for zoning changes and capital improvement plans. This master plan update has a helping hand in the form of a grant provided by the Hudson River Valley Greenway (HRVG). HRVG is prepared to match town funds up to $10,000 with the stipulation that the money is used to help fund economic development. Currently in the first of three phases, members of the newly formed Master Plan committee are hard at work, gathering information from the people of Plattekill that will be used to create a vision for the town’s future. After gathering resident input, the committee will start to narrow its focus, gathering more detailed information. With all the necessary information, the committee Continued on page 4

A good fit for Montgomery? Residents voice concerns at tense meeting with Medline representatives By LAURA FITZGERALD lfitz@tcnewspapers.com Montgomery residents expressed numerous concerns over impacts to their quality of life in a tense meeting with the Montgomery village board and Medline Industries, Inc. representatives on June 6. Located on the east side of NYS Route 416 and north of Interstate I-84, the 1.3-million-square-foot warehouse is proposed in the Town of Montgomery,

just outside Village of Montgomery limits. The building will replace the outgrown facility 500,000-square-foot facility in Wawayanda, which employs 320 workers, according to Town of Montgomery planning board documents. The project is currently before the Town of Montgomery planning board. Numerous village residents stated the project would ruin their quality of life, bringing traffic, noise, pollution, and visual impacts.

“This is not going to benefit us,” village resident Amy Jones said. Chief among residents’ concerns was an increase in employee and truck traffic through the village, which already experiences trucks and congestion at peak traffic times on narrow intersections. Dmitry Dukhan, Vice President of Real Estate for Medline, said Medline will not send its trucks through the village, instead routing them through Neelytown Continued on page 3
