• Red is associated with vitality and stimulation, often used to boost energy. • Blue is linked to calmness and relaxation, promoting a sense of tranquility. • Yellow is associated with optimism and mental clarity, to stimulate the nervous system.

Light influences the production of neurotransmitters and hormones in the brain. Exposure to specific colours is thought to trigger the release of certain chemicals, affecting mood and emotions. This is particularly relevant in the context of addressing conditions like Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) during the winter months. While scientific evidence supporting chromotherapy is limited, many people find it to be a relaxing and enjoyable complementary therapy. Chromotherapy is often integrated into infrared saunas, to enhance the overall experience. The therapeutic effects of an infrared sauna with chromotherapy can deliver both physical and mental well-being, making it an invaluable tool to navigate and thrive during the colder months. RITUAL Nordic Spa, located in downtown Victoria, offers infrared sauna bookings for one or two people in their Birch Private Sauna Suite. Each one hour session includes infrared sauna, chromotherapy, private shower, towel, and locker use. Ritual is also known for its “Nordic Circuit” and massage therapy. f the grey days of winter leave you feeling blah, it’s time to discover Infrared Sauna and Chromotherapy. Infrared energy can improve circulation, reduce inflammation, help relieve stress and pain. Chromotherapy, or colour therapy, provides the seven-colour spectrum similar to sunlight, and provides both mental and physical benefits, especially if you tend to feel low on energy this time of year. This holistic healing practice is based on the belief that colours can influence our physical, emotional, and mental well-being. The concept dates back to ancient civilizations, including the ancient Egyptians and Greeks, who used coloured light in their healing temples. Here’s an overview of how chromotherapy works: Chromotherapy is rooted in the idea that each colour has a unique energy frequency corresponding to specific energy centers or organs in the body. Exposure to specific colours can introduce new energy, and help create balance and harmony. For example:

ilver Threads Service offers Ukulele and Yoga programs to stretch you musically and physically. Both ukulele and yoga have numerous advantages for challenging your mind by learning an instrument and bending your body with gentle exercise. However, it is advisable to avoid practicing them simultaneously. But if you do master that, there might be a new career awaiting you in Las Vegas! Ukulele is a great instrument to learn to play. It’s an easy instrument and can create beautiful music, and after a few classes you will be able to play recognisable tunes. While you might not be ready for Carnegie Hall, it won’t be as offensive to the ear as, say a beginner accordion. Beginner Classes start at the Victoria Centre Friday, February 23rd from 1:00 to 1:45pm. For those who have some experience, the class at the Saanich Centre is Wednesdays, starting February 21st from 9:30am to 10:30am. Our instructors are encouraging and bring a lighthearted approach to the classes. Are you finding that aches and pains are sneaking up on you and the back, knees, hips are not working like they used to? Well, welcome to the club….or in this case - Centre. Our Yoga classes are for those of us who aren’t so bendy, need some motivation and appreciate being in a class with others in the same boat. The starting point for beginners is Chair Yoga. It is restorative and you are seated for the class. Beginning the week of March 4th classes are Mondays and Thursdays at the Victoria Centre. At the Saanich Centre the Gentle Yoga class is floor-based with smooth transitions for strength and mobility. Classes will begin Thursdays, February 22nd. Love Begins in the Gut: A Guide to Gut-Healthy Foods and Habits

A

s February unfolds and Valentine’s Day approaches, the focus on matters of the heart takes center stage. However, there’s more to love than meets the eye, or in this case, the gut. Scientists suggest that the chemistry of love might just begin in the very core of our digestive system. THE GUT-HEART CONNECTION: LOVE AT A MICROBIAL LEVEL Recent research has unveiled a fascinating link between gut health and emotional wellbeing. The gut, often referred to as our “second brain,” houses trillions of microorganisms that play a crucial role in various bodily functions, including digestion and immune system regulation. Surprisingly, the gut also influences our emotions and mental health. THE MICROBIAL CUPID: GUT BACTERIA AND LOVE HORMONES Within the intricate world of our gut, certain bacteria seem to act as microbial cupids, influencing the release of neurotransmitters and hormones associated with love and attraction. Serotonin, often hailed as the “feelgood” neurotransmitter, is primarily produced in the gut. A healthy balance of gut bacteria contributes to the optimal production of serotonin, influencing our mood and emotions. GUT FEELING: INTUITION AND ATTRACTION Ever experienced a “gut feeling” about someone? It turns out that this intuition might be more than just a metaphor. The enteric nervous system, embedded in the gut, communicates with the brain, influencing our emotions and responses. A balanced and thriving gut environment may enhance our ability to connect with others on a deeper, more intuitive level.

GUT-FRIENDLY FOODS FOR A HAPPY HEART 1. Probiotic Powerhouses: Yogurt and Fermented Foods Incorporate probiotic-rich foods into your diet to nurture a flourishing gut microbiome. Yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi are excellent sources of beneficial bacteria that promote digestive health. Probiotics not only aid in nutrient absorption but also contribute to a balanced gut environment. Probiotic supplements are concentrated sources of beneficial bacteria, such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, that contribute to a healthy gut microbiome. These supplements can be particularly beneficial if you struggle to consume enough probiotic-rich foods. Look for a broadspectrum probiotic with various strains for comprehensive support. 2. Fiber-Rich Delights: Whole Grains, Fruits and Veggies Fiber is a key player in maintaining gut health. Whole grains, legumes, vegetables and fruits provide a rich source of dietary fiber, promoting regular bowel movements and supporting the growth of beneficial bacteria. Oats, quinoa, and a variety of colorful fruits and veggies should find a regular place on your plate.

3. Supplements for Gut Health In addition to incorporating gut-friendly foods into your diet, supplements can play a crucial role in supporting a thriving microbiome. Here are some key supplements to consider: • Digestive Enzymes: Digestive enzymes aid in breaking down food into smaller, more easily absorbed components. This can be especially helpful if you experience digestive discomfort or have conditions that affect enzyme production. Common digestive enzymes include amylase, lipase, and protease. • Fish Oil (Omega-3 Fatty Acids): Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oil supplements, have anti-inflammatory properties that can positively impact gut health. They may help reduce inflammation in the digestive tract and support overall gut function. • L-Glutamine: An amino acid, L-glutamine is known for its role in maintaining the integrity of the intestinal lining. It’s essential for gut health, and supplementing with L-glutamine may support the repair of the gut lining, especially in cases of leaky gut syndrome. • Marshmallow Root: Marshmallow root has a soothing effect on the mucous membranes of the digestive tract. It can be taken as a supplement or consumed as a tea to alleviate symptoms of digestive discomfort. As always, personalized advice from a healthcare professional is recommended to ensure that supplements align with your individual health needs.

LIFESTYLE PRACTICES FOR A LOVEINFUSED GUT 1. Mindful Eating: Savor the Moment Practice mindful eating to enhance digestion and promote a positive gut environment. Take the time to savor each bite, appreciating the flavors and textures of your meals. This mindful approach can reduce stress and contribute to a healthier gut. 2. Stay Hydrated: Nourish Your Gut Adequate hydration is essential for optimal digestion. Water helps break down food, facilitating the absorption of nutrients in the gut. Ensure you stay well-hydrated throughout the day to support a happy and healthy digestive system. This February, as you celebrate matters of the heart, remember that love might just have its origins in the gut. By prioritizing gut health through mindful dietary choices and lifestyle practices, you not only nurture your digestive system but also contribute to the intricate dance of love and attraction within your body. So, indulge in gut-friendly foods, embrace a love-infused lifestyle, and let your gut be the starting point of a happy and healthy connection. DR. MARITA SCHAUCH, BSC.
