PHISTICATION THE SOLARIUM WAS COMPLETELY REBUILT IN THE SAME LOCATION AND TO THE SAME DIMENSIONS AS THE PREVIOUS ADDITION. BUILDER HUXLEY SAID IT HAD BEEN POORLY BUILT IN THE FIRST PLACE. THE ENTIRE FOUNDATION AND WALLS WERE REPLACED AND THE ONLY THING KEPT AND REUSED WAS THE STEEL FRAMED ROOF STRUCTURE.

A

few surprises are always to be expected when renovating an old house, and maybe even a bombshell or two when a home is nearing a century old, but in this case restoration revelations were slightly more alarming than usual. Builder Maximilian Huxley discovered extensive rodent damage in this house so during demolition his workers had to wear full body-covering hazmat suits, and later the home was sealed for two days while it was decontaminated and fogged with steam disinfectant. It all began a couple of years ago when the home’s new owners, two Vancouver professionals who are also both musicians, were looking to retire here and discovered a beautifully landscaped, large lot in Uplands on which sat an appealing 1930s character home. > Capital HOME FALL 2018 | 23
