Dr Delsey is the founder of InstinctualParent.com an online community of parents looking to better their relationships with their children. She shares how motherhood can be quite lonely at times.

Becoming a mother can be a fulfilling experiences, but it can also be incredibly lonely. For many new mums, the transition from working, having friends and a social life to spending most of their days with a baby can be a huge shock. It’s easy to feel isolated, especially when you’re struggling with sleep deprivation, household chores, and the never-ending demands of caring for a baby.
I went through it with both my kids! I felt like I was in a completely different world, one where I didn’t have much in common with my friends who didn’t have children. It was a tough transition, but I eventually learned to find joy in the simple moments with my little one.
I also loved the opportunity of connecting with other mums who have been through the same thing… it makes a big difference. These moments also taught me the importance of putting myself first and taking care of me. Whether it was scheduling reading time, exercise, or doing something I enjoy. Taking time and being present refreshed me and changed the way I kept up with the demands of motherhood.
I have to remind myself that the feeling of loneliness is temporary. As kids grow up, our lives change again. In the meantime, I get to focus on enjoying the moments I have with my boys, and remembering that I’m not alone.
