Giving your loved ones a special farewell State of Grace offers a caring and uniquely personalised approach to funeral arrangements. The range of services – many based on sustainable principles – ensures families that their loved ones will be given a special farewell. Janet Mikkelsen owns the business with her sister and the company accountant, Gillian. The two other funeral directors are Rachel Nash and Robyn Watson, while Lynda Casey is the Operations Manager. Anita Seccombe and Janet’s mother, Marion, also assist while her father, Terry, maintains their white Buick hearse. Based from a heritage cottage, the staff usually organise funerals at churches and other special venues. While they work with a group of celebrants, many families choose their own. After growing up and doing all her schooling in Howick, Janet’s 25 year nursing career centred on paediatric oncology wards – mostly at the Starship Hospital. She worked there on the palliative care team for seven years. Looking for a career change, Janet was offered a franchise from the women who had started State of Grace in West Auckland. After training and now three-and-a-half years on, she finds the work “very rewarding.” The team offer care with an intuitive and informal style – very different from the mainstream businesses. They describe themselves saying, “we are like the aunts in a family that know what needs sorting.” Families can opt for a traditional, a natural or eco funeral. State of Grace’s services include home-based care, which makes it possible for your loved one to be at home up to several days with special body care provided. Embalming is

rarely used. Or you can arrange for your loved one to stay at the cottage until the funeral with visiting times arranged. Others prefer a simple cremation service with staff providing a pick-up service and help with formalities, dressing the body and a farewell period before the handover for cremation. For environmental reasons, they use their own range of eco caskets and for cremation, a simple liner is used so the coffin can be re-used. It’s the little things these women do – like organising unconventional ways to transport a casket to a funeral or decorating a child’s coffin with carefully chosen decals that make all the difference.
