Tarzan’s vine swings through Coweta family tree By W. WINSTON SKINNER winston@newnan.com A new Tarzan movie opened on Friday – following some 200 previous movies on the jungle man. One of the first starred Fondren Odell “Tarzan” Banks, who was a descendant of a pioneer Coweta settler. Banks played Tarzan in two reelers filmed by Biograph Studios just outside New York City in New Jersey. The silent movies were made about 1920. Earl Liederman, a “physical culturist,” directed the films on the wood lot started by inventor Thomas Edison. Lie-

derman’s wife, Helmar, a beauty pageant participant, played Jane Porter, the Englishwoman who captures the ape man’s heart. Banks and Helmar Liederman reportedly never kissed in the films. Banks, wearing a leopard skin outfit, would swing from a platform on a sound stage with six cameras focused on him. The footage would be combined to make it appear Banks was swinging for miles through the jungle. It took a week to make the
