Wood named Officer of the Year for Meritorious Service BY REBECCA LEFTWICH becky@newnan.com

C

oweta County Sheriff Lenn Wood has been named Officer of the Year for Meritorious Service for making “a significant contribution to the betterment of (his) position.” Wood was honored Monday at the Peace Officers' Association of Georgia Annual Convention in Savannah, where he was congratulated and presented a trophy and a medal by Gov. Brian Kemp. The award for Officer of the Year for Meritorious Service recognizes merit, contribution to the profession or outstanding job performance, including the officer’s impact outside his local area, leadership and contribution to the public safety profession, according to the nomination criteria. “It’s always a great honor to be recognized by the Peace Officers’ Association of Georgia,” Wood said. “I am proud of the agency I lead and thankful for the community we serve.”

A Coweta County native, Wood graduated from Newnan High School and began his law enforcement career in 1978 as a patrol officer with the Newnan Police Department. After working his way up to detective sergeant, he moved to the Coweta County Sheriff ’s Office in 1995. There, Wood was instrumental in developing the School Resource Officer program in the sheriff ’s office training unit. He also served as president of the Georgia Association of Resource Officers for several years. A state-certified law enforcement senior instructor, Wood was the Coweta County Jail administrator and court services director before being named chief deputy by then-Sheriff Mike Yeager. He was sworn in as interim sheriff when Yeager retired in March 2019, then won a special election later that year to remain in office. Under Wood’s leadership, the CCSO patrols 443 square miles, PHOTOS COURTESY CCSO

ewnan musician Steven Moore recently headed to Nashville to record three original songs. Moore plays country music, and can be found performing at Abide Brewing Company, his church and at events in Newnan. A coworker of Moore had a connection at Abide Brewing Company that helped him arrange his performances there. Moore plays some of his original songs but mostly performs covers. The opportunity to record music in Nashville popped up one night while he was performing, Moore said. "There was somebody in the crowd that night that had a distant connection to somebody who signed a record deal in Nashville," he said. "They got in touch with him. I was eating lunch with

You must start declaring God’s goodness in your life. That is how God says we’re going to be blessed – when we start declaring His goodness. Learn to speak blessings over your life, your friends, your future. Remember, a blessing is not a blessing until it is spoken. If you’ll do your part and start boldly speaking blessings over your life and the lives of those around you, God will provide everything you need to live the life of abundance He wants you to have. He who pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity and honor...He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity. Proverbs 21:21, 23

my family one day, and I got a phone call from Nashville and I said, 'I'm gonna step outside and take this real quick.'" Moore said he was contacted by Matt Rogers, a country musician from Macon. Rogers and Moore talked about Moore's music, and Rogers referred him to a studio in Nashville. According to Moore, the studio offers a full band of session musicians to record his songs with him. He said he's had other musicians play with him before, but usually it's just him and a guitar. "I can't imagine having all these session players play with all these different things and having it sound completely different," he said. On the first day of recording, Moore said he didn't know what to expect. He was nervous going into the studio, but grew comfortable after he met the session musicians. "We just talked everything over, and then it kind of slowly transformed into absolute awe, amazement and excitement for what comes after this," Moore said. Moore started playing guitar when he was 11 years old and began writing music shortly after he learned to play the instrument. The songs he wrote didn't go farther than his bedroom, he said. He mostly played for himself. "As a kid, I was about as shy as it gets. I didn't like going in front of people or doing anything, so it was a transition," he said. "I went from being visibly very shy and timid to slowly progressing. Every time I'd get nervous, I'd talk to my dad and he'd say, 'They’re here to hear you. Go show them something.'" Moore said he never imagined he would have an opportunity to record his music, but he remains modest about how the opportunity came about. "I wouldn't have done this myself," he said. "There's a lot of different little situations that have gone on. I owe a lot to family and friends that have helped out."

hanel is a super friendly dog who has been at the Coweta Animal Services shelter since June 1. Chanel, a charcoal gray pit bull mix, was picked up as a stray from Westgate Park Drive. She's approximately two years old. Chanel is extremely playful – but not too high energy, said shelter workers. She loves people and tested really well with other dogs. She also seemed to test pretty well with cats. Chanel is "an all around good dog" who would be a "really great family dog," said shelter workers. Chanel likes to play and also likes to just hang out and be loved on.
