Trinity middle schooler takes on Colorado’s ‘Fourteeners’

n Colorado, there are 53 mountains known as “Fourteeners.” These 53 mountains are all of the state’s tallest peaks, and all of them, at their peak, are 14,000 feet or higher in elevation. One of the people that has been climbing these mountains is Shiloh Stewart, an eighth grader at the Trinity Christian School in Sharpsburg. Last year, she climbed Mount Bierstadt, a 14,065-foot mountain, 38th among the 53 Fourteeners and not far from Denver. This summer, she climbed Mount Sherman, a 14,043-foot mountain several miles from Leadville in central Colorado. The mountain is named for Gen. William T. Sherman. Mountain climbing runs in the Stewart family, as Shiloh’s father, Michael, explained. lasses have begun for the more than 22,000 students in the Coweta County School System, and school officials say the new year has gotten off to a “strong start.” Schools have opened with the same COVID-19 practices and protocol in place at the end of last year, but the school system will continue to monitor conditions and follow any new guidance from state health officials as it is issued. While approximately 300 students have chosen virtual instruction through the school system’s Empower online platform, the majority of students have elected to return for face-to-face instruction – even at Newnan High School and Atkinson Elementary School, which were heavily damaged by an EF4 tornado in March. Construction projects at several other schools, including the building of “Cougar Village,” a temporary campus for Newnan High School freshmen at the Central Educational Center; the comYou must start declaring God’s goodness in your life. pletion and opening of the school system’s newest school, Blake Bass Middle School; and extensive renovation and additions at Northgate High School. HVAC and lighting projects also were completed at Arnall Middle School, Jefferson Parkway Elementary School, Newnan Crossing Elementary School and Thomas Crossroads Elementary School. “This was a summer like no other,” said Dr. Evan Horton, who is in his second year as superintendent of Coweta Schools. “I am proud of our employees for all that they have done to see these projects through so that our students could have a strong start to the 20212022 school year.” More than 400 students and staff members returned to Atkinson Elementary School last Thursday after finishing the last few weeks of the 2020-21 school year in temporary quarters at West Georgia Technical College’s Newnan Campus, while workers raced to complete repairs in time for this year’s opening. At Newnan High School’s main campus on LaGrange Street, approximately 1,600 students in grades 10-12 started classes in three permanent buildings that suffered relatively minor tornado damage, along with around 30 mobile classrooms. At CEC, about 450 new freshmen began classes Monday in permanent and mobile classrooms. “It’s great to have our students back on campus face-to-face,” said Dr. Chase Puckett, Newnan High principal. “Our staff, parents and students have done a phenomenal job adapting to our new campus and new traffic patterns.” Puckett said staff members and central office staff have been working on getting NHS students – who finished the 2020-21 year virtually – back on campus since shortly after the devastating tornado struck on March 26.

SHILOH FROM PAGE 1 and her coaches at Trinity, her track coaches pushed her to be working out during the summer, so she decided that what better way to workout than to climb a mountain.” Fortunately for Shiloh, her father suggested she might be in the best shape of the whole family due to her involvement with Trinity’s track program and other sports. Michael said his daughter is a great athlete. “She’s just coming off track season, so she’s in top shape, so it wasn’t a concern for her,” Michael said. “She was probably in the best shape of all of us, because she had been training for Track for so long. She stays in really good shape, so the rest of us have to worry about it.” To honor her coaches and the school she attends, Shiloh has brought along a Trinity Christian School flag with her for her climbs. “It’s mostly for my coaches,” Shiloh said. “They’re really interested in a lot of stuff I do outside of school, especially my track coaches.”

MarkeTplace “Her coaches have been great, especially her softball coaches and her track coaches,” Michael said. “They’ve been really super supportive of her athletics. She wanted to be sure and take a picture with the flag and give it to them, to thank them for all they have done for her.” Michael said that the Trinity Christian School has helped Shiloh blossom as an athlete and has helped motivate her to climb mountains in more ways than one. Michael also said that a desire to be like, and to be better, than her siblings, has helped drive Shiloh to play softball and climb mountains.

It’s a family affair for Shiloh “She’s grown up looking at her brother’s stuff, with all the pictures hanging around and all these different accolades he’s earned,” Michael said. “I think she looks at that, and she sees her brother playing baseball at the University of Massachusetts, so with softball, it’s probably, ‘I want to be a better softball player than my brother was, I want to be a better mountain climber than my brother was,’ so it’s a real competitive edge for her.”

When climbing one of the Fourteeners, the Stewarts go up together as a family, coming together from different places to conquer a mountain as a team. For instance, her sister and brother-in-law flew out from Michigan to join them on the trek up Mount Sherman. “We went with her brother and sister and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, and they all came with us, so it was a big family thing,” Michael said. “All of them have been on mountains with us before, too, so they were experienced as well. They enjoyed it. That’s the main thing.” There are different challenges associated with climbing mountains, such as the increased altitude, which means thinner air that potentially makes it more difficult to scale a mountain compared to lower altitudes, where the air is thicker. Much of Colorado is located a mile or more above sea level. “The altitude is probably the biggest part of Colorado,” Michael said. “Some of them aren’t difficult from a technical standpoint, but some of them are. It varies from mountain to mountain.” Soon, she hopes to climb the Mount of the Holy Cross, named so for a unique feature of the mountain, where two ridges form to

make a cross, the mountain’s most prominent feature. With the cross featuring prominently on the mountain, people make pilgrimages to the Mount of the Holy Cross to reflect. Michael said they plan to climb the Mount of the Holy Cross next year, a mountain that he said has some technical challenges to it. “It’s a little bit tougher than the others, and she’s in great shape to do it, but I’m not sure if we’ve trained hard enough for this, so we’ll do it next year, so that’s a big goal for us,” Michael said. The Mount of the Holy Cross is located near the ski resort town of Vail, just north of Aspen. Shiloh said she sees herself becoming a mountain climber after leaving high school, and is thinking big for what mountain she wants to conquer. Denali, also known as Mount McKinley, is the highest peak of the North American continent, and third largest in the world, at 20,310 feet. On Thursday, Shiloh said she wants to climb it. “Her brother, her older brother, was the youngest to climb it at one point,” Michael said. “He was only 12 when he climbed it. That broke the previous record, and that record’s been broken since.”

“Everyone’s been working together as a team,” he said. “It was all hands on deck to get it put together.” Concerns over COVID-19 cases prompted the school system to move classes online for a few weeks at the start of the 2020-21 school year, and school officials say they will continue to follow the guidance of state and federal health experts in the new year. This year is a continuance of practices and protocols from last year, with the following currently in place: Mask wearing: The school system “strongly encourages” adherence to new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance to wear masks indoors in public in areas of substantial or high transmission, but masks are not mandatory in schools. However, masks are required for all travelers and drivers on school buses and any other form of school system transportation, in com-

pliance with an ongoing federal order. Other guidance: Schools will continue to follow ongoing COVID-19 health and safety guidance from state health officials. That includes social distancing where possible, health self-checks for students and staff, continued cleaning and hygiene measures, and participation with the Georgia Department of Public Health to perform close contact investigations where needed. Visitors allowed: Parents, grandparents and other guests will be allowed to return to schools as visitors and volunteers. The school system is asking that all school visitors follow CDC guidance regarding face masks, that all visitors perform voluntary health checks with the same criteria used to assess students and staff, and that anyone showing symptoms or at risk of infection refrain from visiting a school. Changes are possible as the situation evolves. School officials cautioned that changes to the back-to-school protocol are possible, depending on pandemic conditions. Changes could be made system-wide or within individual schools, should outbreaks occur or state guidance changes.

icky G is a shy g uy — a three-monthold kitten at the Coweta Animal Services shelter. Ricky and his brother are both orange tabbies and are a bit shy, while their sister, a gray tabby, is the social one. Ricky and his bunch are a few of the many kittens available for adoption at the Coweta Animal Services shelter. There are also numerous adult cats. Ricky is a very nice boy, said shelter workers, and has been coming out of his shell more and more since he has been at the shelter. When he first got there, he didn't even like to be picked up. He just needs to be socialized a bit more, said shelter workers. The shelter is currently running an adoption special in hopes of getting more of the many cats and dogs adopted. Adoption is a flat $25 fee and includes spay/neuter surgery, a microchip and at least one round of vaccines.
