PERSONAL MOTIVTION My name is Egle Varapeckyte. I was born in Lithuania. I just graduated Masters Degree in TU Delft University in Netherlands this June and looking forward to a new life experience challenges. I would like to gain experience working in the professional architecture office. The first time I really discovered my passion for architecture was at the age of sixteen when I enrolled in Antanas Martinaitis Art School which I attended in conjunction with my regular studies. There I got the basics of drawing, painting, graphics, sculpture and history of arts. Upon graduating from high school I became an architecture student at Kaunas University of Technologies. During my Bachelors degree studies at university I have participated in the Erasmus program, where I spent one semester at VIA University College in Denmark. During this time I gained great insight into Danish building regulations and which materials are commonly used there. Besides, it was the first time I have experienced group work, which consisted of people from all over the world. Therefore I was able to improve my English language skills. Good relationships with group members and effective time planning helped us to win second place in multi-storey house semester project tender. Furthermore, in order to gain more insight into the world of architecture, I completed an unpaid internship at Panevezio Statybos Trestas Ltd in 2010 summer. During the internship I was able to experience the full process involved in the life-cycle of the architectural project, starting from the creation of the blueprint right up to the completion of the building.

MOTIVATION

After graduating Bachelors degree I was working in an architecture office named “Archispektras”. I was working on primary school and military barracks reconstruction projects, also a few individual houses. I feel lucky that people in the studio gave me lots of freedom as well as responsibility in the project from abstract sketches to complete documentation for finishing the project. Also, it is great to work together with qualified architects and to learn professional knowledge that university is unable to give for a young architect.

During the Master thesis I was working on the graduation project in my home country - Lithuania. On the seaside area, called Curonian Spit. My studies in Netherlands were filled with many different practices working with international students. I also took part in student association “Polis” by organizing study trip to Istanbul. Furthermore, I had the chance to take part in winter school in Honk Kong together with mentors and other students from TU Delft. Our choices of studios included globalization studio in Argentina, where we were working on Parana Delta. Two years were full of adventures and I can not wait to start working in Architecture office, where I can use my gained knowledge from all over the world. I believe that working in professional studio would help me gain more confidence and would improve my portfolio. I always feel responsible and challenged for the giving tasks and I hope to bring new ideas and energy for the office.

For that reason new train station needs to be designed in the city of Kaunas, where the track comes.

Basement is created as a parking plot and connection between platforms. On the ground floor - waiting room with shops and emergency room as well as ticket office. The first floor is created due to architecture of the building - antresole gives a view to waiting room and consists of administrational rooms and restaurant. Arrangement of the premises gives open light view to coming trains for the people who are waiting and closes the busy view from the street.

Station form is created to open the view for the passengers to the forest, coming trains and park. One side of the building is closed from fast road cars. The station building shape is contrastic for existing square shape railway station built in the Soviet Union era. New esthetical dynamic shape reflects speed of new European trains.

From neighbourhood to city: the basic ingredients of social life, Andrew Wright

Curonian Spit has local elements, but the whole Spit missing some major ingredients as a city

If we take the Curonian Spit size and analyze it according to Andrew Right “the basic ingredients of social life�, we can see that Neringa has the size of a city, but ingredients only for local community. In my project I took Curonian Spit as one urban structure and try to find the missing functions for the full functionan social life that city has.

Settlements


All problems like overlaping governance, growing amount of preservation rules without knowing how to implement them, only seasonal tourism and lack of authenticity definition bring the site to no possibilities for development. People are leaving, houses are limited, no building is available on the island and this way people do not see the future in having full living experience in this place. If we try to solve these problems by including local people in governance, optimizing the tourism through out the year and defining authorities in decision making we should be able to develop with existing conditions, which means using existing vacancies.

In order to prevent loosing its nomination, clear guidance of authenticity elements needed for the developers. These regulations should include typologies of houses, nature dominating in area and how it can be implemented in new development. Now, if someone has an idea for development first he has to find the owner, then find the investors or the institution that money comes from. They go to the architect to explain their needs and wishes in the design. Then the design has to be confirmed by municipality and national park. Most of the times the design gets denied, because national park thinks that it is going to destroy the nature

and municipality do not agree on economical development for someone’s needs. Then the only possibility is to bring money in these institutions in order to get signature for development. In proposal, when someone has an idea, first he goes to other people and together with investor and owner figer out the needs, idea and money for development. Using the given guidelines from national park he asks the architect to make a design. What is left now is municipality confirmation, which should not be denied because it is what people need and accepts the national park requirements.

I used the empty parking plot and abandoned multi storey house for new intervention. As well as two old houses to connect with water public transport. This way I create the multi functional center.

Green corridors repeat the historical structure of settlements as well as proportions of houses.

Director of the primary school wanted to create some extra classes in order to convert it to secondary school. The task was to make more space for classes using as less as possible site. Administration sector also needs more arranged space. The existing building had strange details that makes some classes smaller because of unused spaces. The main idea was to make square equal walls for existing school, to add long squared bulkhead for new classes and support it with annex for administration sector. The middle empty area is covered with pyramid to make modern library inside.

SHIFTING DYNAMICS

Vision

2013 Buenos Aires, Argentina Masters degree studio Author: The group consisted of 11 students of TU Delft Urbanism track from 7 nationalities. I participated in all stages of planning and developing, mainly focusing on local scale and implementation of guidelines. Mentor: D.Sepulveda The project Shifting Dynamics was made within the course Globalization and was framed by the complex cities studio of Spatial Planning and Strategy and the Delta Intervention lab of the Urbanism Department of TU Delft.

The studio was a collaboration between Technical University of Delft, Houston University, the Harvard GSD program, University of Vienna, the Municipality of Buenos Aires and the municipalities of Tigre and San Fernando. The student work investigated how the current dynamics both from the delta and the metropolitan region intervene with each other and how this dynamics can be shifted towards a more sustainable future vision. Currently the Lower Parana Delta is undergoing a lot of pressure through human influence as urbanization and vast deforestation which destroys the biodiversity and liveability of the natural habitat.

Aiming on the spatial development of the urban fringe, the environmental and socio-economic management and the socio-spatial integration, proposed strategic goals of the metropolitan scale, the main identity zones reinforce those goals, creating the spatial conditions for the integration of the urban scale into the greater proposed concept by: 1. Strengthening the multifuctionality and polycentralitiy of the area 2. Reinforcing the sustainable development of the delta, taking into account its natural qualities 3. Developing areas for economic and recreation development

The proposed areas are in accordance with the metropolitan strategies for the settlements and the sustainable activities, being a detailed part of them, which can work only in their context.

By improving accessibility, water quality, green environment and centrality, public domain can be created and enhanced, which seeks to overcome socio-spatial and economic fragmentation.

The area of the node chosen for implementation is located at the crossing of main waterways, making it highly accessible in terms of water transport.

Each space constitute and opportunity for socio-territorial recovery through the use of exible spaces that provide a platform for a variety of activities and uses by diferent user groups.

Located near the city center of Tigre and with existing tourist attractions, the area is already a popular tourist destination.The area also has good public transport connection, so it is highly accessible for tourists from

Authorities involved in phasing

Phasing of the area is divided into small and big interventions in settlement, infrastructure and public domain according to the cooperation of the stakeholders in the matter of existing and crucial points, taking into account potential areas. Phase 1 Upgrade informal settlement with public spaces and infrastructure. Open amusement park to public. Remove the industry from area and dig out new canals. Phase 2 Give land to urban agriculture. Make educational centers. Create the public water transport port. Phase 3 Bring greener y to parking plot with pathways. Enlarge the urban gardening to the other side of the river. Phase 4 Urbanize part of area. Create the park with sport facilities. Extend the other shore with wetlands.

Phase 5 Give part of the land to the wetland, create the pathways inside the area. BY DOING SO: 1. In the phase one we upgrade existing informal settlement and open amusement park as well moving out the industr y from the water front. New canals are created bringing the infrastructure afterwards. Part of area is given to the urban agriculture for people together converting existing buildings in the area for educational purposes. 2. Next to parking – port for public water transport is created in phase two, to bring more connection to the delta. 3. Parking plot in phase three is improved by bringing the greenery in with park pathways and porous green pavement which can be partly flooded. Parking plot can also function as a food market while casino non-working hours. People can sell and buy vegetables that are grown in urban gardening. 4. With phase four in our design city

structure grows into the area, this way we provide more people for the market also for public transport and diversity in the area. Next to this area, the park with sports facilities is created. 5. Phase five gives part of the area to wetland, to keep water more clean and create the buffer zone for flooding. STAKEHOLDERS: All of this can be implemented with help of the stakeholders. 1. While officially land where informal settlements are located belongs to the government, people that live there can implement the design by creating urban gardening. 2. Business investors should take care of renovated parking lots and areas where casino, amusement park and market are located. 3. Local government should investigate in implementing designed parks and sports fields as well as new residential neighborhood.

Studio work consisted of analysis along the old railway called Hofbogen line. The activities, functions and accessibility allow to make conclusions about the crucial points for intervention. Using the analysis of appartments size aroud it, function and other social aspects new spacial design was created in order to improve social connection and include the monument of railway track.

It is clearly showed that the whole economy is concentrated next to main - busy streets. It is well connected and mainly all the small shops are in older and smaller buildings We have one big shopping centre, which is new but also located on one of the main streets in order to be visible from the main flow point - tram stop. Middle of the area is residential area almost without economy inside cotaining one of the empty building together with the monument.

According to the building type and age, area is quit diversed and has different values of appartments and economy points. Although the Hofbogen itself contains more industry workshops as studios. The area is well recognized: residential appartments remains in more less the same level buildings and we have a few nodes as church and Eudokia building who stands out. Hofbogen is another recognizable element which could connect the area from south to north direction.

To preserve the monument and make it visible for the people I use transparent material for the library.

Concrete reflects the monument pattern.

There should be more green in the main square and around the area for urban gardening green is the dominant.

All these materials combined gives the place the identity and shared place. In order to make it work together we should combine them.

Wooden terraces makes more “warm� impression and attracts people to sit. Bricks are already dominant material in the area, we should use the same color for shared space -0.10

The idea came from analysing the surroundings near the site in Skandeborg,Denmark.

south. This allows sunlight to enter and heat the rooms which are mostly used by the occupants.

The buildings, surounding the site are either singular houses or apar tments but are not large imposing str uctures. The shape of the sails from the yachts on the lake also inspired the design of the building.

One entry/staircase allows access to all apartments and reduces the cost of multiple staircases easy access from the street to the building.

Building reflects this gable shape of the roof line by staggering the form which gives it a lighter look and is not as overwhelming.

The living and dining areas of all apartments are well functioning and open plan to allow light to flow through.
