Following the first project, which is based on the group survey to residential area in Joglo, West Jakarta, our second project tasked us to find conceptual keyword from the literature that was given to the class. My keyword was “interface”, inspired by quote from a book called The Practice of Everyday Life (De Certeau, 1988), “space occurs as the effect produced by the operations that orient it, situate it, temporalize it. and make it function in a polyvalent unity of conflictual programs or contractual proximities.” With that quote came the interface concept. The interface meant as “the effect from individual functions of spaces which create boundary and different human activities inside” another way to explain how space occurs based on what De Certeau stated.

The particular site location is in the middle of one of the section of kampung that we figured that most of the residents in the area are Betawi, native Jakartan. Here is the area where we can see the distinctive taste of the locals in how they tend to choose bold colors for their houses. The condition may also existed because of their economy condition. Multicultural nature of Jakarta has invited newcomers or foreigners to live there which add cultural mix to the local culture.

Mapping is done on the dense housing area of Joglo. From the diagram, we can see houses with different use of colors. The observation and analysis of neighborhood spatial usage and movement became the basic of model development. Programming was designed to develop activities space of the community by celebrating colors as their identities as well as to give the intervention that could create interface inside space for the community without disturbing personal distance of each individuals. There are three kinds of individual identified; kids, adults, and local sellers.

Combination of exploration models and programming study based on characteristic of activities and color identity is the model form. The final touch of the model form development is giving back the colors which based on the colors of the houses mapped around the area. The space created by the shape of the model defined activites that usually done by three different kind of people in the area. The kids can use their space for playing, the adults can use their space for social gathering, and the sellers can use their space to sell their goods to the community.
