Early morning Cross Country

“The Edge” Indoor netball team

We have recently started an early morning Cross Country running group! Learners meet at 6:45 on Mondays and Wednesdays and go for a 3 – 5km run in the Edgemead neighbourhood accompanied by a number of staff members. We have had an overwhelming response with 30 – 40 learners taking part in each session. We are looking forward to joining the Primary Schools’ Cross Country League next year.

This term, “The Edge” indoor netball team, who represented Edgemead Primary School in the Junior League Indoor Netball Competition, did our school and their coach, Mrs Joosten, proud. These girls have been competing over the last two terms in this competition and played in the play-offs where they received bronze medals for coming third overall.

“A Colourful Collage of Entertainment”

Michael Moreland and Robbie Arends teamed up at the Western Province Tournament during the school holiday. They entered the competition with Michael ranked fifth and Robbie ranked second. Robbie then competed in the South African Junior National Tennis tournament held in Bloemfontein. This is a tournament where only the top 32 players in South Africa may compete in the main draw. Robbie was seeded number 8 and reached the quarterfinals. As a result, he was invited by South African Tennis to play in the Nike Junior Masters event held in Potchefstroom. Robbie is currently the number one ranked player in the Western Province 12u and is ranked 8th in South Africa.

In September, the Foundation Phase showcased “A Colourful Collage of Entertainment“ featuring songs like: This Old Man, Tomorrow , Grease Lightning and many more to a full-house for two evenings . A special morning show was held for the grandparents and senior citizens. All the Grade One, Two, and Three learners participated in this exciting event.

“Cool Teacher” competition Rhys Orange, a Grade 4 learner, nominated his teacher, Mrs Lategan, as a “Cool Teacher” for the Radio Heart 104.9 competition, “How cool is your school?”

Hectic Nine-9 Some of the Grade 4 learners from Edgemead Primary had the exciting opportunity to be the live studio audience for the TV show Hectic Nine-9 at the Cape Town Science Centre. Egypt Day The Grade Fives held an Egypt Day to celebrate the end of the theme for Term 3. The learners dressed up as Egyptians and the day was spent playing games, and enjoying an Egyptian feast. An ‘Egyptian Top Gear’ event was held where learners raced their elastic-powered Egyptian cars made during their Natural Science and Technology lessons. A fun day experiencing Egyptian life was had by all!

Gymnastics Daria Galukhin, a Grade 7 learner, participated in the SA National Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship in the U13 Level 8 category during the September holidays.

Jarryd Butler finished fourth in the NSF 100 championship in PE in September.

The annual Grade Seven Market Day proved to be an “Alien Affair” for some. This store, with its “goo” and green slime was an absolute favourite, particularly amongst the younger learners.

She achieved gold medals in the ball, hoop and club events and a silver medal in the free dance section. Daria was the overall winner of the section and achieved a fifth gold medal.
