KING EDWARD VII SCHOOL (t) 011 551 5800 (e) www.kes.co.za Kings of Kowie! KES 1st 8 win Boat Race 2016 The Annual Schools’ Boat Race took place on the Kowie River in Port Alfred over 9 and 10 December. Heats were raced on the 9th while the finals took place on the 10th. KES 1st 8 raced in A Schools Final on Saturday, 10 December vs St Andrews 1st 8 and won. After heat trials on Friday, 9 December KES were placed as the fastest boat on the water and went into the final quietly confident but one can never be certain. KES 1st 8 were amazing, taking the lead from the beginning and by the halfway mark were ahead by a length. King Edward VII School 1st 8 were also awarded ‘The Most Improved Crew’ at the awards ceremony on 10 December.
Boat Race requires a combination of power and endurance coupled with an exceptional technical expertise. Athletes will be subject to physical fatigue as well as extreme psychological pressure. Our boys had trained hard during the examination period and after a final preparation camp at the Vaal River on 28 November left for Port Alfred on 6 December. The 2016 crew was coxed by club captain, Ntsako Mphahlani, who returned to the Kowie for his second race. After steering the boys to the A Final vs St Andrew’s, it was his experience and confidence in the crew that brought us home. Crew: Ntsako Mphahlani (cox); Cameron Menton (stroke); Nic Nepgen; Christopher Baxter; Liam Smit; Dean Geldhoff; Damien Bonhage-Koen; Brandon Bester and Keegan Reynolds. Spare men: Vincent Jackson and Cameron Bryce.
