HISTORY: Grey High School was founded by a Scottish graduate, John Paterson, and land was made available by the Governor of the Cape Colony, Sir George Grey, in 1856. With the arrival of Rector Mr W Chubb Meredith in 1892, came the Old Greys' Union, the Cadet Corps, the school colours and the school magazine. He also wrote the school song. His successor, William Archer Way, was responsible for moving the school to its current location in 1915. HOSTEL: Meriway House has a capacity of 150 boarders and is situated on the campus. A computer laboratory is available for the boarders to use and the entire hostel has WiFi coverage. ACADEMICS: Modern facilities (eg smartboards and well equipped laboratories) and expert tuition by staff are part of our commitment to strive for academic excellence. The school offers a diverse range of subjects and aims to foster selfconfidence, analytical problem-solving, communication skills, teamwork and inspired leadership in our students. EXTRA-MURALS: At Grey, we believe that, without a healthy body, the mind and spirit cannot function optimally. To this end, the school offers an extensive range of sports and facilities to encourage sportsmanship, healthy competition and the creation of friendships. To complement this, a large variety of clubs and societies is on offer. MUSIC: Music is taught to a sizable contingent of Grey boys, many of whom study it as one of their subjects. The boys are advantages through their opportunities in a collection of bands and orchestras.

Malherbe voltooi. In January 2011 the school opened it’s doors to the first English class. What a proud moment that in the year that we are celebrating our diamond jubilee, the first English class will finish their high school careers at D.F. Malherbe. At present there is one English class per grade. In grades 8 to 9 we follow a policy of parallel medium instruction.

From gr. 10 onwards the medium of instruction depends on the learner’s subject choices. In subjects such as Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Accounting and Life Sciences we are able to follow the same policy as in gr. 8 and 9. In subjects where there are not enough learners to justify 2 separate classes we offer duel medium instruction. We are proud of the fact that D.F. Malherbe High School has been able to fulfil its duty and obligations as an institution of higher education that has served the community with honour for the past 60 years. Staan rotsvas!
