Through programming successes like “American Idol” (still the most watched series on television in the United States), “reality TV” has grown to be a huge part of the programming broadcast on both cable and network television. The emergence of reality programming as one of the most successful and profitable genres found on television would seem to suggest this is a relatively new invention. Actually, it stretches all the way back to the 1940s. Here we’ll recount a little about the history of this style of show, along with some things you might not know about reality programs in America and worldwide. • In 1948, the first “reality show” aired. It was Allen Funt’s “Candid Camera,” a precursor to MTV’s popular prank show “Punk’d” (currently hosted by pop superstar Justin Bieber and a revolving rotation of young entertainers). Unlike “Punk’d,” which focuses on pranks played on celebrities, “Candid Camera” featured mild pranks played on everyday individuals, and captured their reactions. turn the page for more!

It was German-American painter and lithographer Herm Albright who made the following sage observation: “A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.” It’s well-known that there were shortages of many items during World War II -- and caffeine was one. It was such a problem, in fact, that the chemists at Coca-Cola tried to find a substitute, even experimenting with a derivative of bat guano. The idea was nixed by an executive who was afraid of the public backlash if the truth ever came out. Just as a group of birds is called a flock, a group of frogs is called an army.

Q: Please tell me if “Sanctuary” will be back with new episodes in Syfy. -- Marlies W., via email A: Syfy announced in May that the science-fiction drama would not return for a fifth season. Series star Amanda Tapping took to Twitter to address the show’s cancelation: “To all the fans of Sanctuary, we love and adore you. Thank you for the love and support.” *** Q: I loved seeing Eric Mabius on “Franklin and Bash” earlier this year, and I wondered what else I can see him in? -- Jeanna M., Baltimore A: Aside from recently starring in the Hallmark Channel movie “How to Fall in Love” and making a guest-starring turn on “The Client List,” he co-stars with indie queen Parker Posey in the Sundance Festival hit “Price Check.” When I spoke with Eric recently, he told me all about the movie. “You’re going to laugh your ass off. I think IFC bought the film. It’s a dark comedy centering on this guy I play (Pete Cozy), who gives up his dreams of being a music A&R guy. He moves to the suburbs of Long Island and accepts a marketing job at a small chain of grocery stores. He has a wife and a child, and is trying to pursue the ‘American Dream.’ “Parker Posey’s character, Susan, is put in charge of this section of grocery stores. Nobody in the office cares about his job. Susan comes in and shakes everyone’s universe up. She is so quintessential Parker Posey. She is brilliant, and she’s so funny. It’s a lot of fun.” *** Q: Now that “Desperate Housewives” is over, what will Marc Cherry do next? -- Miranda T., via e-mail A: Marc Cherry has never been one to gather moss, so his rolling stone is heading to Lifetime, where he’s developed a new series called “Devious Maids.” Originally developed for ABC, Lifetime will air the series in 2013, and it will star Ana Ortiz, Judy Reyes, Roselyn Sanchez, Grant Show, Mariana Klaveno and Susan Lucci. To piggyback off an idea I got from Annie Potts when I interviewed her earlier this year, I think Lifetime would be remiss if they didn’t see the potential of grabbing up the recently canceled ABC show “GCB” and pair it with “Devious Maids.” As Annie told me: “If we were paired with ’Devious Maids,’ we’d have the great American equivalent of ’Upstairs, Downstairs’ -- the rich and righteous in Dallas and the maids of Beverly Hills. What network executive wouldn’t see home run written all over that?” *** Q: Will there be a “Fifty Shades of Grey” movie? -- Tina T., Sarasota, Fla. A: Universal Studios and Focus Features bought the rights to the “Fifty Shades” trilogy in March, and have brought “The Social Network” producers Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti on board to help bring the runaway-hit book to the big screen. There is no word yet on casting or a release date. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

A “Reality” Check (continued): origins. “Idol” was created in the ‘90s by Simon Fuller. Fuller rose to prominence as the manager, and some would say manufacturer, of pop sensation The Spice Girls. He was so important to the group’s success that the British press dubbed him “Svengali Spice.” When the group suddenly fired him, Fuller devised a way to create a group over which he had full control, thus “Idol” was born.

Ever wonder why a barber pole has red and white stripes? It’s a rather grisly tale. At one time barbers did more than cut hair; they sometimes performed marriages and baptisms, served as dentists and even performed surgery. When engaged in the medical work, any excess blood was soaked up by white towels, which were often hung up on a pole outside to dry. As the wind wrapped the towel around the pole, • “American Idol” was actually supposed to be an online show when Fuller created it in 1997. it created a design of red and white stripes. However, the lack of high-speed internet in The 1982 film “Gandhi,” which was awarded eight most homes made the idea unfeasible, so Oscars, including the one for best picture, used a Fuller went to television to broadcast his idea instead. whopping 300,000 extras.

• “American Idol” is actually a spin-off of a similar program in Great Britain called “Pop Idol.” After agreeing to be one of the judges on the upstart American version, Simon Cowell nearly quit in the last week before the first episode aired. Cowell worried that his confrontational, distinctly British personality The most popular perfume in the world is Chanel No. would not work with American audiences. 5. • In the nonfiction book “American Idol: The Untold Story,” author Richard Rushfield *** interviewed Cowell about his nearly quitting Thought for the Day: “Always forgive your enemies, the show before it ever aired. Cowell said, “I remember calling my lawyer, and I said, but never forget their names.” -- Robert Kennedy ‘I don’t want to do it. I haven’t signed the contract. Get me out of it.” Toilet paper was first introduced in the United States in 1857, but the idea didn’t take off -- the paper being offered was evidently too much like the paper in the Sears catalog, which is what most people used at the time.

Mission Not Impossible at Mission Raceway

I would like to thank track manager Laura Ness for her support and look forward to the Smoke and Thunder Jet

Mother nature is a powerful force and in drag racing it is always something racers, fans, sponsors and track management dance with every season. On Saturday July 21 the weather was a solid green light for NitroFest at Mission Raceway. Great to see so many new fans coming out to the races. The racing was fast and furious, could have watched the Bucky Austin and Mark Hentges funny cars race each other all night. There side by side finishes gave me goose bumps. There were so many incredible side by side burnouts you had to be there to experience them. When I was going through the Pit area where you can chat with drivers, the crew and family members. I ran into driver Kelsey Elliott all of twenty years old, she is the daughter of drag racer Rod Elliott (www. rodelliottracing.com). Kelsey explained to me that her dad had been racing drag boats when he was 17 years old right up until she was born. Ron decided with his new baby Kelsey, drag boats were not the safest sport and switched to 200 mph racing on pavement. Ron drives a 1970 Barracuda blown alcohol funny car. Kelsey excitingly tells me her proud dad parked his car for the summer this year so he could allow her to start drag racing herself. Kelsey jumped into a blown alcohol dragster and on her first race ran a 7.53 time at 188mph. At Mission she improved her time to 7.07 ending up in third place the reason, mother nature had a final say. Sunday the race was shut down due to rain, Kelsey who was in the finals could not finish the race as it was determined to finish the finals at a later date at Pacific Raceways near Seattle. Kelsey would not be able to attend, she is happy though, "That's my second race ever and I finished 3rd." Look out for this rising star in the future as she has the drag racing fever.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Hatfields & McCoys” (TV-MA) -- The History Channel took some time off from airing unscripted shows about pawn shops and roughnecks who work in remote locations to air something related to history -- and it worked out pretty well! This six-hour miniseries takes a bloody page out of American history and produces a decent scripted drama with real actors. Devil Hatfield (Kevin Costner) and Randall McCoy (Bill Paxton) served together in the Confederate Army. When the war ends, a feud starts up as McCoy suspected Hatfield of leaving duty too early. Things spiral downward from there, as blood begets blood and the cycle of vengeance reaches down through the generations. It may not be the most historically accurate -- the details of the feud are murky to begin with -- but it makes for good drama.

“The Magic School Bus: The Complete Series” -- If you have rugrats, whippersnappers, young’ns or kids who need to learn a thing or two, you could do a lot worse than a ride on the Magic School Bus. Cyrus plays Lola -or “Lol” to her text-messaging, social media-addicted peers -- a high-school girl trapped in a relentlessly unoriginal teen drama. Her boyfriend breaks her heart by hooking up with another girl, and then she gets confusing feelings about her best friend (he’s cute and in a band!) The movie tugs at tenderness with Lola’s strained relationship with her mom (Demi Moore.) A “Reality” Check (continued): Cowell out of abandoning the show. They convinced him he’d have “free rein” and wouldn’t need to alter his abrasive persona for American viewers. One other judge did back out at the last moment, however. Originally, the show was to feature four hosts, but a Los Angeles radio DJ named Stryker quit the show at the last minute. • Stryker was worried the “cheesy singing contest” would hurt his image. With no time to recast, the show decided to go with three judges instead. In an ironic coincidence, Stryker later served as the house DJ for the daytime talk show hosted by Ellen DeGeneres. Lavender May Calm Hyperactive Dogs

On July 31, 1715, a hurricane strikes the east coast of Florida, sinking 10 Spanish treasure ships carrying tons of gold and silver coins and killing nearly 1,000 people. About 80 percent of the treasures was recovered within a year, but the rest remained lost until the 1960s.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read on an Internet forum that lavender can help calm nervous and hyperactive dogs. Is this the case? I know that some plants are toxic to pets. -- Jenna C., Los Angeles

On Aug. 5, 1858, the first telegraph line across the Atlantic Ocean is completed. Four British and American vessels met in mid-ocean and successfully laid 2,000 miles of cable, often at a depth of more than 2 miles. On Aug. 3, 1861, the last entry of Charles Dickens’ serialized novel “Great Expectations” is published. Dickens’ father was thrown in debtors’ prison in 1824, and 12-year-old Charles was sent to work in a factory. On Aug. 2, 1876, “Wild Bill” Hickok, one of the greatest gunfighters of the American West, is murdered in Deadwood, S.D. Hickok was playing cards with his back to the saloon door when a young gunslinger named Jack McCall walked into the saloon, approached Hickok from behind, and shot him in the back of the head. On Aug. 4, 1944, Jewish German-born Anne Frank and her family, who had been hiding in German-occupied Holland, are found by the Gestapo and transported to various concentration camps. The young girl’s diary of her time in hiding was found after her death and published in 1947 as “The Diary of Anne Frank.” On July 30, 1976, American Bruce Jenner wins gold in the decathlon at the Montreal Olympics and sets a world record in the event. After his win, Jenner was voted the 1976 AP Male Athlete of the Year. The 1976 Olympics was his last decathlon.

DEAR JENNA: Lavender, or the scent of lavender, has been touted as a natural way to help calm down dogs. Experts advocating natural treatments recommend placing a few drops of the essential oil on a cloth, a favorite blanket or a cotton ball and placing it near the dog. (Make sure your dog doesn’t ingest it.) I’ve seen recommendations to place the essential oil directly on a dog’s coat, but this can cause skin irritation, so you should avoid that. For cats, however, lavender is a more dangerous proposition. Ingesting the essential oil or accidentally getting it on their skin can cause stomach upset and, in larger doses, liver toxicity. It’s true that some plants, including herbs, are dangerous for both dogs and cats. Lily plants should not be in a house with cats, as they are very poisonous. Eucalyptus plants and essential oil should be kept away from pets; the plant leaves can cause vomiting if ingested, and the oil can make cats quite ill. A list of plants that are poisonous for cats and dogs can be found at earthclinic.com. Before bringing a new plant into the house or before applying an herbal or aromatherapy remedy to your pet, do your homework to make sure it’s not toxic. Your veterinarian also can provide expert advice on herbs and plants to avoid. Send your questions or tips to ask@pawscorner.com, or write to Paw’s Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. For more pet care-related advice and information, visit www.pawscorner.com.

In today’s world, Bill Doner would be referred to as "Uber-promoter", but forty years ago when the charismatic drag-strip entrepreneur was just getting started he was just another race promoter. Today, after staging as many as a thousand events a year at various tracks up and down the West Coast, he is considered by many as being the king of race promoters. Bill Doner is a brash-talking', big-dealing' kind of person who loved providing ground-poundin' excitement for the race fans. When the veterans of the past drag-race wars huddle together to chop old jackpots, it's usually not long before talk turns back around to memories of "Fox Hunts," spectacular night-time fire burnouts, "(How Many?) Sixty-FOUR Funny Cars!" and the epic, high-volume, "SAT-urday Night!/SUN-day Afternoon!" saturation commercials which trademarked Doner's innovative International Raceway Parks promotions of the halcyon, pre-ESPN 1970s. Today, Doner lives with his wife Lori and two dogs, Rocky and Rusty, in the Southern California desert community of La Quinta however his links to drag racing have never really ceased; he is now teamed up with long time racer/promoter, Don Rackemann as the president of the Fuel Saver Group whose products paid contingency money at the Bakersfield California Hot Rod Reunion, and their MPG3 Fuel Enhancer sponsored Cory Lee's top fuel funny car was participating at the NHRA World Finals at Pomona.
