Dinky Dome
Designed by John V. Koester Originally The Minnesota Bible College the Dinky dome is named because of its adjacency to the neighboring commercial district. The building is square in dimension at 99’8” by 99’8”standing three stories tall. The glass dome centered over the building is made of steel double structure truss-framing creating two domes of glass. The 90-year-old Dinkydome began as home to the Minnesota Bible College, but it has long housed businesses related to the university, fastfood restaurants, and a coffee shop.
Hastings City Hall
Designed by A.M. Radcliff and completed in 1870, the building served as the Dakota County Courthouse until 1974. It became Hastings City Hall in 1993. The structure incorporates Italian Villa and Romanesque Revival features and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It remains one of the most dominant structures in downtown Hastings, even though an unsympathetic addition in 1955 damaged its original integrity. Designed by Cass Gilbert and modeled after Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome - the unsupported marble dome is the second largest in the world, after Saint Peter’s. It is the third building to serve t h i s purpose: the first capitol w a s destroyed by fire in 1881, and the second was completed in 1883, but was considered to be too small almost immediately. Gilbert drew ire for choosing stone from 1st Capitol Georgia rather than native Minnesota stone. A compromise was eventually made where the base of the building and interior spaces used varieties of native stone, including Kasota stone, and the rare Pipestone used by Native Americans for their peace pipes.

is one of the largest and most historic churches in the United States and is rightly listed as a landmark on the National Register of Historic Places. It is not an exaggeration to say that it is a treasure for all Americans. It compares to the great cathedrals of Europe. This, the fourth Cathedral of Saint Paul, was the dream of Archbishop John Ireland, who secured the site in 1904. The 120-foot-wide dome has a clay tile surface overlaid with copper. A copper-clad lantern approximately 30 feet tall on top of the base lends to the Cathedral’s overall height of 306 feet. Masqueray completed only a few interior designs before he died suddenly in 1917. Consequently, the archbishops and designers who succeeded Ireland and Masqueray assumed the responsibility of transforming the Cathedral’s stark, whitewashed interior into a decorative masterpiece.
