Bill Finger came up with the name Bruce Wayne by combining the name of Scottish patriot Robert Bruce with that of American Revolutionary War hero Mad Anthony Wayne. • Save the Rhino Day on May 1 is to draw attention to saving this endangered mammal. There are five species of rhinos, with three of these listed as critically endangered. Only 60 Javan rhinoceros remain. Only about 3,000 rhinos live in the world worldwide. The white rhino can weigh over 7,700 lbs. (3,500 kg) and is the second largest land mammal. Even the smallest rhino reaches a weight of 2,200 lbs. (1,000 kg). turn the page for more!

• Star Wars fans are well aware of the importance of May 4. This day was chosen as Star Wars Day, and the pun “May the Fourth be with you” is the motto of the day as a play on words of the films’ catchphrase “May the Force be with you.” The phrase was possibly used in writing for the first time in 1979 when Margaret Thatcher won the election on May 4th to become Britain’s first woman Prime Minister. A large ad in the London Evening News proclaimed, “May the Fourth be with you, Maggie. Congratulations.” • May 8, 1945 was a day of celebration as Great Britain and the United States celebrated Victory in Europe Day, or V-E Day, the day that German troops throughout Europe finally surrendered, putting an end to the rise of the Nazis, and marking the end of World War II in Europe. Adolf Hitler had committed suicide just days earlier, on April 30, and his successor authorized the surrender. It was a nice birthday present for President Harry S. Truman, who was also celebrating his 61st birthday that day. • Canada celebrates Victoria Day on May 22 this year, the only country that commemorates Queen Victoria with an official holiday. Victoria was born on May 24, 1819, and although she ruled Britain for nearly 64 years, her reign is not a recordsetter for the longest. That honor belongs to her great-great-granddaughter Queen Elizabeth II, who passed by her ancestor in September, 2015. Canada’s Parliament first proclaimed the holiday in 1845, although it wasn’t signed into law until 1901, following Victoria’s death. In other Canadian news, the country also celebrates its immigrants on May 22 this year on Canadian Immigrants Day, also called Citizenship Day, first observed in 1950, and always on the same weekend as Victoria Day.

Even routine care can take a bite out of your budget. And in all but a few cases, pet owners must bear the cost of care. You do have a few immediate options: --Negotiate payments or care costs with the vet. While routine visits are usually required to be paid for up front, the vet may be willing to work with an owner to pay for treatment of acute illnesses or long-term conditions.
--Financing through a service like CareCredit can close the gap between a vet visit and your next paycheck. Read the terms carefully, though; you may be better off paying with a major credit card when it comes to interest rates. --Pet insurance can ease the financial burden of pet care, although you may only be able to insure your healthy cat. This insurance reimburses you for medical costs after treatment, so you’ll still need to have a way to pay up front for your cats’ care. Consumers Advocate recently rated its top 10 insurers. What if you need more assistance in paying for your pets’ care? May 6 is Russell Stover Candies Day in honor of this candymaker born in a Kansas sod house in 1888. After studying chemistry at Iowa State University, Stover took a job as a sales rep for a tobacco company. He moved on to a Canada wheat farm before taking a sales job with a Minnesota candy company. Stover and his business partner were the first to create the chocolate-dipped ice cream bar, named Eskimo Pie by Stover’s wife. In the meantime, he and his wife Clara were experimenting in their kitchen with various candy recipes. A move to Denver in 1923 was the beginning of the famous company. Within two years, there was another factory in Kansas City, followed by a third in Nebraska. When Stover died in 1954, the company was making 11 million pounds (4,989,516 kg) of candy a year, sold in 40 Stover retail outlets and 2,000 department stores. The company is now the nation’s largest producer of boxed chocolates sold in 70,000 stores, producing 100 million pounds (45,359,237 kg) of candy annually. • Morse Code Day on May 24 is the anniversary of the first official telegram. The code had been developed by Samuel F.B. Morse, who, with two others, developed an electrical telegraph system, which sent pulses of electric current along wires connected to an electromagnet at the other end of the system. The code was based on the pulses and the silence between them.

Fountain Pen Q: My dad was a banker in Kansas, and I never saw him use a writing instrument that wasn’t a fountain pen. I inherited one of his favorite ones, a Parker Duofold Senior. It is a beautiful pen, and I would like to know about when it was made. -- Stan, Overland Park, Kansas A: Your pen was manufactured in 1958 and is quite collectible. I found it listed in “Collecting Pens,” by Edward Kiersh and published by House of Collectibles. Kiersh values your pen at $175, but this may be a little low since fountain pens have become a hot collectible and values have steadily risen. I occasionally write with a “Big Red” from the 1930s, and it is one of the pleasures of life to write a note or letter with a vintage pen. *** Q: My grandparents immigrated to the United States from Europe in about 1920. Among the heirlooms they managed to bring with them is a set of sterling flatware in the Acanthus pattern by Georg Jensen. • Samuel Morse was not an inventor by nature, but rather a famous portrait painter who had painted John Adams, James Monroe, and the Marquis de Lafayette, among other notables. Morse was led to explore rapid long-distance communication out of a broken heart. While he was away from home working on a portrait, his wife suddenly took ill and perished. By the time Morse received a letter with the news, his wife had already been buried. The first telegraph was sent from the Capitol in Washington, D.C. over 40 miles (64.4 km) of wires to Baltimore. A Congressman’s 17-yearold daughter was allowed to choose what the first telegram would say, and she chose a phrase from the Bible, “What hath God wrought?” Within 10 years, more than 20,000 miles (32,187 km) of telegraph had been strung in the United States. Western Union, the best-known telegram company in the U.S., was founded in 1851, and continued sending telegrams until 2006 when its last telegram was delivered. Every year, the World Health Organization sponsors World No Tobacco Day, aimed at educating the public about the dangers of tobacco use. UNUSUAL PLANTS: MEDICINAL HERBS Because May 6 has been declared Herb Day, Tidbits is focusing on the healing properties of several different herbs. • The uses of herbs vary from culinary to medicinal to spiritual. In the culinary world, chefs differentiate between herbs and spices, with herbs referring to the leafy or flowering parts of a plant, such as thyme, parsley, or basil, while spices come from other parts of the plant, such as seeds, berries, bark, roots, and fruits. • The ancient Chinese and Egyptians were writing of how to use herbs as medicine as early as 3,000 BC. A Greek physician named Galen formulated herbal remedies with up to 100 ingredients around the year 160. • Many folks swear by the use of Echinacea for combatting the common cold. The plant is a member of the daisy family, with the most common varieties known as purple coneflowers and black-eyed Susans. The leaves, stems, flowers, and roots can be brewed as tea, or squeezed as juice or extract. Studies indicated that Echinacea does seem to increase the number of white blood cells, which fight infections. • Ginger seems to be beneficial in a multitude of areas. University studies indicate that it may slow the growth of colorectal cancer cells and induce death to ovarian cancer cells. Ginger has long been used to treat nausea, morning sickness, colic, and motion sickness, but has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and painkilling properties as well. • Not only does lavender smell heavenly, it’s useful as an insect repellant, as a disinfectant, and in the treatment of acne and athlete’s foot. When inhaled, it’s said to ease exhaustion, insomnia, irritability, and depression.

There are a number of claims as to the benefits of ginkgo, including enhancing memory and attention. Some studies have used ginkgo for the treatment of dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease, without concrete evidence supporting its benefit, although it does seem to improve blood circulation, which could help the brain function better. Ancient writings dating to 2600 BC describe its use in the treatment of asthma and bronchitis. Some users today claim benefits in the treatment of glaucoma, macular degeneration, ADHD, vertigo, and difficulty concentrating. • Although the valerian plant has sweetlyscented pink or white flowers, it’s the roots that are well-known for its sedative qualities. Some studies indicate that it can relax the central nervous system, and it has been used as a sleeping aid for centuries, as well as a muscle relaxant to ease pain. • Remember when Peter Rabbit’s mother gave him a nice cup of chamomile tea after he had eaten too much in Mr. McGregor’s garden? For many, this member of the sunflower family seems to help with soothing stomach aches as well as help with sleep. For other, it aids in the healing of wounds, abscesses, gum inflammation, and diaper rash. • The root of the ginseng plant is one of the most popular herbal medicines in the world. Research indicates that ginseng may help lower blood sugar levels as well as boost the immune system. Other possible benefits include enhancing energy and improving thinking ability and cognition.

MAY DAY, MAY DAY! Take a look at some more of these May holidays. • May 1 has been designated Melanoma Monday, with the aim of raising awareness about this aggressive form of skin cancer. Close to 90,000 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed this year, with deaths estimated at nearly 10,000. Although melanoma accounts for only 1% of skin cancers, it’s responsible for 75% of all skin cancer fatalities. Exposure to ultraviolet rays is a major risk factor, with sun, tanning beds, and sun lamps as major sources. Those with red or blond hair, blue or green eyes, those who burn easily, and fair-skinned people with freckles have a higher risk for melanoma. Cells within moles on the skin turn malignant and, left untreated, spread rapidly to other areas of the body. • In 1865, author Mark Twain published his first short story “Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog,” more commonly known today as “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.” It featured a pet frog named Dan’l Webster and a competition between men betting on which frog could jump higher. This sparked the Calaveras County, California Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee, with origins in 1893, and today’s Jumping Frog Day on May 13. The County has recorded the current record-holder as Rosie the Ribeter, with a jump of 21 feet, 5.75 inches (6.57 m). • If you’ve never learned to swim, May 20th is for you! It’s National Learn to Swim Day, set aside to raise awareness about the importance of teaching children to swim. Every day, ten people die from drowning across the country. Of these, two are 14 or younger. Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the U.S. for children aged 1 to 4, and fifth overall for all ages. Swimming lessons can reduce a child’s chance of drowning by up to 88%.

International Hummus Day, May 13, was brainstorm of a young 21-year-old entrepreneur named Ben Lang, who, in 2012, envisioned a holiday that could “bring people together from around the world.” This ancient dish, first recorded in cookbooks in the 13th century starts with mashed chickpeas, adding ground sesame seeds, olive oil, lemon juice, and garlic. Chickpeas are rich in fiber, protein, manganese, and B vitamins. • May 26 is World Lindy Hop Day, paying homage to the lively bouncing dance of the Jazz and Swing Eras. The hop originated in the African-American communities of Harlem shortly after Charles Lindbergh’s famed solo non-stop crossing of the Atlantic in 1927. A mere 10 days after Lindy’s landing in Paris, the dance was named for the pilot who had “hopped the Atlantic,” a trip of more than 3,600 miles (5,794 km). The dance is still popular today and is frequently included in performances and competitions. • Raise your glass of Chardonnay on May 26, National Chardonnay Day. The green-skinned Chardonnay grapes’ origins are in Burgundy, France. In 1912, cuttings from French vines were brought to Livermore Valley, California, an area just east of San Francisco. Today, nearly 100,000 acres of this grape are planted throughout the state. Chardonnay is America’s most popular wine, even more so than red, and the grape is the world’s most widely-planted white wine grape. Depending on the area of production, plums, apples, pears, figs, peaches, and melons are added to the recipe.

Botox Can Ease Blepharospasm DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been contending with blepharospasm for years. I got some relief from Botox for around four years, but then it stopped working and my doctor moved me to Dysport, which was horrible. It did not relax my symptoms, and it made me constantly very uncomfortable (with a feeling that my eyes were swollen all the time). I stopped the treatments and have been able to cope, until the past six months. I am almost unable to read, look at a computer screen or drive. Do you have any suggestions? I use Ativan to try to relax the stress of the blinking, but even that has lost its effect. I have been discouraged from getting a limited myectomy because of the risks. My ophthalmologist said that a neurologist would be a waste of time. I am desperate for another opinion. -- B.B.

ANSWER: Blepharospasm is an uncontrollable muscle spasm around the eyes, often causing blinking and twitching. It ranges from occasional and mild to the much more severe and disabling condition you report. Treatment with botulinum toxin is effective for most people. Botulinum toxin, directly injected into muscle, weakens or paralyzes the muscle. There are three types of botulinum toxin A currently available in the United States: Botox, Dysport and Xeomin, as well as botulinum toxin B (Myobloc). I suspect your ophthalmologist changed brands because of the concern of antibodies your body may have developed to the Botox. I would never say that a neurologist would be a waste of time. Blepharospasm is a limited form of dystonia, and neurologists are the experts in dystonia. The neurologist will have an opinion on trying a different form of botulinum toxin, as well as other treatments. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 61-year-old woman who was diagnosed with notalgia paresthetica about five years ago. Several years later, my general practitioner told me to use capsaicin, which helps with the tingling feeling, but sometimes it feels like someone is pinching my spine and the skin tingles, bringing on a very uncomfortable feeling. Can you tell me any more about this skin condition? I am beginning to believe that it is getting worse. -- Anon. ANSWER: Notalgia paresthetica is common, but often not diagnosed, and usually causes an itching under one shoulder blade. It sometimes is associated with curvature of the spine (scoliosis). It isn’t curable, and often gets better and worse. Capsaicin, lidocaine patch and other creams usually provide some relief. Botulinum toxin and nerve block occasionally are used for people with more severe symptoms who don’t respond. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 79-year-old male with mild Parkinson’s disease and Type 2 diabetes. I can walk about 10 feet before becoming terribly short of breath and weak. I have been this way for several years, and it has become increasingly worse. Can you help me? -- K.C. ANSWER: Neither Parkinson’s disease nor Type 2 diabetes explains terrible shortness of breath on mild exertion. Severe shortness of breath can come from serious heart or lung problems (many types) or severe anemia. I can’t help: Get to your doctor right away. Five years ago, Aaron Hernandez was one of the brightest prospective players in the NFL, a 22-year-old all-pro tight end out of the University of Florida who had just signed a lucrative fiveyear, $40 million contract with the perennial champion New England Patriots. During that span of time, if Aaron Hernandez had chosen to walk a different path, barring injuries, he would have made the playoffs all five of those years and would be wearing two Super Bowl rings. More than likely, he would be negotiating an extension. On April 19, he’d be joining his teammates at the White House, celebrating their latest Super Bowl victory. Instead, sometime during the early morning of April 19, Aaron Hernandez hanged himself inside his cell at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Lancaster, Massachusetts, where he was imprisoned for life for murder, five days after being acquitted in a separate double murder trial. Think about that for a moment. The man could have made millions ... won two Super Bowls as part of the best TE super tandem in NFL history with Rob Gronkowski, lived happily ever after with his pretty fiancee and beautiful daughter in their mansion with in-ground pool, but he thought this was the better path to take: July 16, 2012: Two men, Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado, are shot to death in their car as they wait at a red light in Boston’s South End neighborhood. August 27, 2012: Hernandez signs a five-year, $40 million contract with the New England Patriots. February 2013: An associate, Alexander Bradley, is shot in the face in Florida. Bradley files a lawsuit alleging that Hernandez shot him after they argued at a strip club. June 17, 2013: The body of Odin Lloyd, a semiprofessional football player who was dating the sister of Hernandez’s fiancee, is found about a mile from Hernandez’s mansion in North Attleborough, Massachusetts. June 26, 2013: Hernandez is arrested on a murder charge in Lloyd’s slaying and later pleads not guilty. The Patriots release him hours after his arrest. May 15, 2014: Hernandez is indicted on two counts of first-degree murder and other charges in connection with the shootings of de Abreu and Furtado. May 28, 2014: Hernandez pleads not guilty to charges in connection with the deaths of de Abreu and Furtado. Jan. 9, 2015: Hernandez goes on trial for murder in Lloyd’s killing. April 15, 2015: Hernandez is convicted of firstdegree murder; carries a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment. Feb. 14, 2017: Hernandez goes on trial for murder in the 2012 killings of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado. April 7, 2017: The jury begins deliberating. April 14, 2017: Hernandez is acquitted of murder in the 2012 killings of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado. April 19, 2017: Hangs himself at age 27. This is a bizarre world, and the world of sports is supposed to offer you an escape. I have no words to convey how truly sad I am that Aaron Hernandez turned out to be such a disappointment. May God have mercy on his soul and bless his daughter and family.

Shrimp Salad With Spring Pea Mix Made without mayo, this company-worthy combo of egg, shrimp and potato salad gets its creaminess from a tangy yogurt-and-mustard dressing. Plate it alongside fresh-picked peas tossed in a light lemon-dill vinaigrette.
12 large eggs 1 lemon 3 sprigs fresh dill 12 ounces large shrimp (16- to 20-count) 12 ounces Yukon gold potatoes Salt and pepper 12 ounces sugar snap peas 1 1/2 cups frozen peas 1 cups plain yogurt 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1/2 cup finely chopped red onion (1 small onion) 3 stalks celery 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar 2 tablespoons olive oil 1. In 4-quart saucepan, place eggs and enough cold water to cover by 1 inch. Heat to boiling on high; remove from heat. Cover and let stand 5 minutes. With slotted spoon, transfer eggs to colander. Rinse eggs under cold water until cool enough to handle; peel and cut in quarters. Set aside 12 quarters for garnish. 2. From lemon, squeeze 3 tablespoons juice and reserve. To same saucepan of water, add lemon rind and dill stems; heat to boiling on high. Add shrimp, reduce heat to maintain bare simmer; cook 3 minutes or until shrimp just turn opaque throughout. Drain, rinse under cold water until cool, and drain again. Discard lemon rind and dill sprigs. 3. In same pan, place potatoes and enough cold water to cover. Add 1 teaspoon salt. Heat to boiling on high, cover and reduce heat to simmer 15 minutes or until just tender; drain well. 4. While potatoes cook, heat 3-quart saucepan of water to boiling on high. Add snap peas and frozen peas. Cook 2 minutes or until bright-green; drain well. 5. In large bowl, whisk yogurt, mustard, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, and 1/4 teaspoon each salt and freshly ground black pepper. Add hot potatoes, onion, celery, shrimp, eggs and half of chopped dill. Fold gently until well-combined. 6. In another large bowl, whisk vinegar, oil, remaining 2 tablespoons lemon juice and 1/8 teaspoon each salt and ground black pepper; add all peas and remaining dill. Toss until well-coated. 7. Spoon shrimp salad into center of serving platter, then spoon pea mixture all around. Garnish with reserved egg quarters and serve immediately. Serves 6. Seniors who live alone often feel lonely. That’s an unfortunate fact. Here are a few more: * More than 40 percent of seniors are frequently lonely -- even those who are married or in a relationship. * Lonely seniors have a 60 percent increased risk for physical and mental decline. If nothing else, if you experience a medical problem, there is no social network to back you up. * Nearly half of seniors don’t have adequate transportation. If you know you need more social interaction, it’s likely up to you to take steps to fix it, to make the effort to be with others. It might be difficult to step out, but it is possible to develop a social network. Go for a walk in a safe place. Talk to others you meet along the way. Find out if your local college offers free or reduced-rate classes. Put together a group meal or local trip made up of the people you meet at a class. Sign up for the monthly newsletter at the senior center. Volunteer to help with setup of events or to drive others who don’t have a car. Go on group outings. Do you have a hobby that could involve being with others? Start with the library, and ask about writer or reading groups, travelogues and speakers who come in to talk on a wide range of topics. A big component of loneliness can be depression, and it’s important to know the signs. If you’ve been down in the dumps or not felt interested in the things that used to give you pleasure -- and if this has gone on for over two weeks -- it’s time to check in with your doctor. IG Uncovers Chaos at VA Medical Center When the Department of Veterans Affairs issues a press release thanking the Office of Inspector General for a fast health care inspection on one of its medical facilities, you know it’s big stuff. Sure enough, the OIG found so many things wrong at the Washington, D.C. facility that it quickly issued an interim report so problems could be addressed immediately. Here are some of the horrors the OIG found as a result of an initial anonymous tip: * There was no system to ensure that recalled supplies and equipment were not used on patients. * It ran out of bloodlines for dialysis patients and had to borrow from a private hospital; 15 days later it ran out again. * There was no oxygen on a hospital floor during a patient emergency. * Nursing staff inventoried one storeroom three times a day and continually sent requests for supplies ... that didn’t arrive. Surgeries had to be postponed; others proceeded without required devices. In at least one case, surgical equipment was removed because the vendor hadn’t been paid. * Most of the sterile storage areas for supplies were dirty; $150 million in equipment and supplies had not been inventoried in over a year. * The lease on a 100,000-square foot storage warehouse was due to expire within weeks, and there was no plan for moving the $15 million worth of items, which haven’t been inventoried. * Four years ago, the facility got 50 handheld scanners to be used to track inventory. As of the OIG inspection, $154,876,092 in materials was missing and not reported. Throughout the inspection, it appears nurses were sending emails to the OIG detailing the problems of missing equipment and supplies.
