TIDBITS® ASKS “WHO’S THAT?” by Kathy Wolfe

Have you ever heard of these folks? Maybe not by their original names, but most likely you’re familiar with the names they adopted. How many do you recognize? • At the age of 17, Brooklyn native Allan Stewart Konigsberg legally changed his name to Heywood Allen. He used the nickname of Woody, and went on to fame as a film director, screenwriter, actor, musician, author, and comedian, bringing us the likes of Annie Hall, What’s New, Pussycat?, and Casino Royale. • Singer Elvis Costello was born in London in 1954 as Declan Patrick McManus. Prior to his success as a performer, he worked as a data entry clerk in the office of the Elizabeth Arden cosmetics company, and as a computer operator in a British bank. He took the name Costello as a tribute to his father, who was also a singer who had performed using the name Day Costello. Declan’s manager suggested combining the name Elvis with Costello. • Why did Meg Ryan change her name? Maybe because Margaret Mary Emily Anne Hyra wouldn’t fit on the theater marquis! The same goes for Audrey Hepburn who must have thought her new name looked better in film credits than Edda Kathleen van Heemstra Hepburn-Ruston!

WHO’S THAT? (continued): • Actresses born overseas or to immigrant parents simplified their names to fit in with the Hollywood scenes, such as Swedish-born Lovisa Gustafsson, better known as Greta Garbo. The daughter of Russian immigrants, Natalia Nikolaevna Zakharenko chose the much simpler Natalie Wood for her stage name. • Not a day goes by that one of the hits by Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta isn’t on the radio. At age 20, a talent scout referred Stefani to a music producer and the couple began dating. According to the producer, he created her new name, Lady Gaga, from the British rock band Queen’s 1984 hit “Radio Ga Ga.” Although some of her performances are controversial to many, it hasn’t stopped her from achieving sales of 27 million albums. • Dana Elaine Owens was just eight years old when she found her future name. While looking through a book of Arabic names, Dana discovered the name “Latifah,” which means “delicate and very kind” in that language. Queen Latifah released her first rap single in 1988. • In 1966, Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O’Brien was the world’s best-selling female singer in the world. Who was she? She was the British pop singer Dusty Springfield, whose first hit in 1963 was “I Only Want to Be With You,” followed by “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me” and “Son of a Preacher Man.” The nickname Dusty came about because she was a tomboy who enjoyed playing football with the boys in the street. • From a jewel to a flower – that’s the route that Australian hip-hop artist Iggy Azalea took. Azalea, who moved to the United States to pursue her career at age 16, was born Amethyst Amelia Kelly.

DEAR KAREN: Keep searching for Morris, and don’t listen to your uncle, who is parroting an old observation that dates back to when cats were generally outdoor pets or working mousers. Morris sounds like an indoor cat and could be in trouble if he’s unfamiliar with the outdoors. Is he a regular escape artist, or is this his first time

getting out? Here are a few things to do: --Contact nearby animal shelters. Describe Morris’ identifying features, such as color or stripes or any fur markings. Do this as quickly as possible, because many shelters euthanize strays after a set number of days have passed. --Contact your veterinarian and any nearby vets to find out if Morris was brought in. If he is wearing a collar and ID tag, a kind stranger may bring him there. --Search nearby woods and wild areas, calling Morris by name. --Place a dish of cat food and water outside the door, on the chance that he is nearby and will get hungry. --Post flyers throughout the neighborhood and around town with Morris’ description, and a contact number or email. Send your questions or tips to ask@ pawscorner.com. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Cat Gone Missing? Here’s What to Do

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My tomcat, “Morris,” slipped out the front door a couple of days ago when my visiting aunt and uncle were chatting with other relatives in the doorway. He hasn’t been back yet. I searched the yard and neighborhood for him without any luck. What else can I do? My uncle keeps saying that he’ll just come back on his own after he’s done “doing what tomcats do.” Morris is neutered, so that doesn’t make sense. What do you think? -- Karen T., via email

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com WHO’S THAT? (continued): • “Batman” star Michael Keaton (born Michael Douglas) changed his last name in order to prevent confusion between himself and another well-known actor named Michael Douglas. He had recently read an article about actress Diane Keaton and decided he liked the sound of it. Ironically, Michael Douglas was the son of Kirk Douglas, whose real name was Issur Danielovitch Demsky, not Douglas at all! Kirk’s parents had emigrated from what is now Belarus, and as a child, he was known as Izzy Demsky. He changed his name just prior to entering the U.S. Navy in World War II. • Another celebrity changed her name to avoid being confused with another. Singer Katy Perry’s given name is Katy Hudson, but there was already a Kate Hudson on the scene, the daughter of Goldie Hawn and actress who had starred in “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” “The Skeleton Key,” “You, Me and DuPree,” and many others. Although Katy Perry released her debut studio album under the name Katy Hudson, it was commercially unsuccessful. Perry is her mother’s maiden name. She holds the world record for the most Twitter followers, and was the first person to gain 90 million followers. She was the highest-earning female celebrity in 2015, and her net worth is estimated at $125 million. • English singer David Robert Jones was also concerned about being confused with Davy Jones of the Monkees, and gave himself a new name, David Bowie, in tribute to the 19thcentury American frontiersman Jim Bowie, who made famous the 9.25-in-long (23.5cm) hunting knife he carried. Jim Bowie was killed at the Alamo.

Tidbits® Full of Fun, Facts & Trivia! Church Sale Treasure Q: I purchased a vase at a church sale that is signed “Geo E Ohr, Biloxi, Miss.” It has a glossy blue-ish glaze and a twisted design. I can’t find the pottery maker in any of the reference books I have and hope you’ll be able to help me. I paid $75 for it. -- Roslyn, Memphis, Tennessee A: George E. Orr opened his pottery studio in Biloxi during the late 1870s. In 1884, he exhibited 600 pieces of his work and attracted a great deal of attention, due in no small part to his unusual glazes and designs. His techniques included twisting, folding and crinkling small pieces of thin-walled clay into odd and often innovative forms. In 1906, he closed his studio and stored several thousand pieces, which were re-discovered in 1972. Needless to say, his work is both rare and collectible. I contacted several experts and they seem to agree that your vase could be worth as much as $2,000, perhaps much more. Your $75 investment was a good one. *** Q: Although I don’t collect, I read your column frequently. I am fascinated by the variety of questions you answer, and I wonder if you ever get ones you can’t. -- Will, Palm Springs, California

A: Yes, I do. For example, about a year ago a woman from Texas contacted me. Her father and grandfather had been dentists, and she had inherited about 200 pair of false teeth, many from the Victorian era. She wondered what they were worth. Although I did my best to find out, I was unable to take a bite out of the question. Incidentally, she had the teeth displayed on glass shelves in her living room, and I immediately had a vision of a space occupied by Cheshire cats. *** Q: I have collected beer memorabilia since the 1960s. I currently have several hundred items including signs, bottles, trays and other assorted items. Is there a club for packrats like me? -Steve, Salt Lake City, Utah A: One of the better clubs is the Brewery Collectibles Club of America. It has more than 100 chapters with more than 1,000 members. Contact is bcca.com. Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox cannot personally answer all reader questions, nor does he do appraisals. Do not send any materials requiring return mail. * It was 20th-century American writer and political activist Max Eastman who made the following sage observation: “It is the ability to take a joke, not make one, that proves you have a sense of humor.” * Have you ever wondered why a “down” in American football is called that? In the early days of the sport, when the ball carrier was tackled, he was supposed to yell “Down!” to avoid getting hit by other players. * If you’re like one-third of American vacationers, you spend at least some time cleaning your holiday lodgings upon arrival. * In many Mediterranean countries, a typical breakfast consists of some combination of the following: tomatoes, olives, cheese, bread and hard-boiled eggs.

* The Guinness Book of World Records (now known simply as Guinness World Records) is so named because in 1951, Sir Hugh Beaver, the managing director of the Guinness Breweries, wanted to settle an argument over whether the golden plover or the red grouse was the fastest game bird in Europe. Unable to find the answer in reference books, Beaver realized that there must be many such questions debated in pubs, but no reference book to settle them. Another Guinness employee recommended professional fact-finders (and twin brothers) Norris and Ross McWhirter to compile such a book. The first edition was printed in 1954, and all 1,000 copies were given away.

* It was a New Yorker named William Shepherd who patented the first liquid soap. The recipe? One pound of soap, 100 pounds of ammonia solution and enough water for the mixture to reach the consistency of molasses. *** Thought for the Day: “I love America more than any other country in this world, and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually.” -- James Baldwin

(continued): • Frederick Austerlitz and Virginia McMath danced their way through 10 motion pictures together from 1933 to 1949 under the names of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. But they weren’t a pair in all their respective movies. Fred made 21 others without Ginger, while she appeared in 63 films without him. At one time, Ginger Rogers was Hollywood’s highest-paid actress. • British actress Helen Mirren, who has an Oscar, 4 Emmys, 3 Golden Globes, and a Tony to her credit, began her career in the Royal Shakespeare Company. The daughter of a Russian immigrant father and granddaughter of a Russian diplomat, she was born Ilyena Lydia Vasilievna Mironov. • The star of 142 films, 83 of them Westerns, John Wayne was one of the top box office stars for 30 years. Born Marion Robert Morrison, his life’s original course involved a football scholarship from the University of Southern California, but a broken collarbone suffered in a bodysurfing accident derailed those plans. Without any funds to continue his studies in pre-law, he took a job at a film studio, and was given a few small bit parts using the name Duke Morrison. (As a child, his constant companion was his Airedale Terrier, Duke, and Marion became known as “Little Duke.”) In 1930, the Fox Studios chief suggested the name of John Wayne. It wasn’t until he was 32 years old that the Duke’s career took off when he starred in “Stagecoach.” John Wayne was a great fan of the game of chess, and frequently played the game between takes on the movie set. • Two famous magicians/illusionists changed their names to something memorable – Ehrich Weiss became Harry Houdini, and David Kotkin uses the stage name David Copperfield.

UNUSUAL PLANTS: WOLFSBANE Here’s some information on a scary-sounding plant, wolfsbane, also known as the werewolf plant. • At first glance, wolfsbane, a member of the buttercup family, is a lovely plant, with delicate purplish-blue flowers and attractive foliage. Yet every part of this plant is poisonous, including its sap, and it should not be grown where children are present, nor used as part of your cut flower arrangement. Certain varieties are also known as monkshood, due to the shape of the flowers that resemble the cowls worn by monks. . • The plant is part of the aconitum genus. Several species have been used to make poisonous arrows. Nomadic people in India put aconite on their arrows to hunt ibex, a species of wild goats, while native Aleuts of Alaska’s Aleutian Islands have used it for hunting whales. • When ingested by a human, symptoms begin within an hour, with nausea and vomiting occurring almost immediately, followed by a powerful burning feeling in the limbs and abdomen, accompanied by motor weakness and numbness in the limbs. It takes just 20 ml. of aconite to kill an adult human, which usually occurs in as little as two to six hours. The toxin can cause heart arrhythmia, and paralysis of the heart and respiratory systems. • The roots of the plant are where the highest level of poison is found. However, great care needs to be exercised when picking the leaves of the plant. Without gloves, the toxin is easily absorbed through the skin. If a person has cuts on his hands, the poison enters the bloodstream very quickly.

He collapsed shortly afterward and perished from multiple organ failure. • According to mythology, wolfsbane can protect people from werewolves. Its unpleasant smell repels them, and the toxin can also destroy them. Supposedly, it can also be used to determine if an individual is a werewolf. If the plant’s flower casts a yellow shadow on the person’s chin, he/she is indeed a werewolf. Legend also has it that aconite was an ingredient used by witches for their magical ointments, and was useful for causing hallucinations. • Greek mythology tells us that the granddaughter of the sun god, sorceress Medea, attempted to poison Theseus the king of Athens with a cup of wine poisoned with wolfsbane. • Wolfsbane has been mentioned many times in literature and films. In the 1931 horror movie “Dracula,” Van Helsing, a vampire and enemy of Count Dracula, advises using sprigs of wolfbane as protection against vampires. In the 1941 movie “The Wolf Man,” the chant is recited, “Even a man who is pure in heart, and says his prayers by night, may become a wolf when the wolfsbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright.” In the “Harry Potter” movie series, the wizards teach that the plant can be used as an ingredient in a potion that werewolves can use to maintain their rationality and conscience when they are transformed into a wolf.

• Actor/filmmaker/comedian Al Brooks started out attending Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Mellon University, but dropped out after one year to concentrate on a career in comedy. He changed his name at age 19 to Albert Brooks from his original Albert Einstein and frequently jokes, “The real Albert Einstein changed his name to sound more intelligent.” • Stevland Hardaway Judkins, better known as Stevie Wonder, was born six weeks premature, and further growth of his eyes was halted, causing his retinas to detach, resulting in blindness. At the young age of 11, Stevie was already signed to the Motown record label with a five-year contract. A Motown producer gave him the name Little Stevie Wonder. Wonder dropped the “Little” part two years later. At age 13, he became the youngest artist ever to top the Billboard chart, with his first #1 Billboard hit, “Fingertips.” To date, he has won 25 Grammy Awards, with the first in 1973 for “Superstition.” • Cherilyn Sarkisian met Salvatore Bono in 1962 in a Los Angeles coffee shop. She was just 16, he was 27. Sonny was working for a record producer and the pair teamed up to sing under the name Caesar and Cleo. In 1964, they married and changed to Sonny and Cher and soon had their first hit, “Baby, Don’t Go.” Of course, their best-known hit was 1965’s “I Got You Babe.” After going their separate ways, Sonny became an actor and later a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Cher went solo, achieving eight Grammy nominations, and an Academy Award for her role in 1988’s “Moonstruck.” FOR STARTING AS LITTLE AS $79.00 A MONTH (WITH APPROVED BANK FINANCING) WE CAN INSTALL AN AMERICAN STANDARD 3 TON 14 SEER HI EFFICIENCY HEAT PUMP WITH A NEW BROAN 15 KW ELECTRIC FURNACE IN YOUR MANUFACTURED HOME!

NAME CHANGES (continued): • Elton John has had a music career spanning more than five decades, with sales of more than 300 million records from more than 50 Top 40 hits. “Candle in the Wind 1997” has sold more than 33 million copies, the bestselling single in the history of U.S. and UK singles charts. He lived the first 20 years of his life as Reginald Kenneth Dwight. His father Stanley Dwight was a former flight lieutenant in the RAF, and envisioned his son with a career in banking. However, at the age of 15, Reginald was the weekend pianist at a nearby pub, performing under the name of Reggie. In 1967, at age 20, he teamed up with lyricist Bernie Taupin, and the duo became one of the most famous songwriting pairs in history. That was the year he changed his name to Elton John, in tribute to British blues saxophonist Elton Dean and British blues singer Long John Baldry. • One of the minor characters in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel The Great Gatsby was named Sigourney Howard. Actress Susan Alexander Weaver liked it so much, she started using the name Sigourney as her first name starting at the age of 14. • Cordozar Calvin Broadus, Jr. got his start in the music business in 1993, when his first album debuted at #1. His second album sold nearly a million copies in its first week, and he has since sold over 35 million albums worldwide. He’s better known as rapper Snoop Dogg, using his childhood nickname of Snoopy, given to him by his parents.

By Keith Roach, M. D, Cracked Fingertips? Try a Home Remedy DR. ROACH WRITES: I wrote a column on cracked fingertips, and received a wealth of suggestions from readers. For prevention, some suggestions I liked included avoiding too-hot water for handwashing, antibacterial soaps and wool gloves, all of which can remove protective oils from your fingers. A humidifier in the house can prevent drying of all the skin. Home-treatment remedies included flax-seed oil or B vitamins by mouth. (I don’t know if these are effective, but they should be safe.) Most people recommended emollients to the hands, specifically Preparation H, O’Keefe’s Working Hands, Bag Balm, CeraVe, Chapstick and Carmex Healing Cream. Plain petrolatum (Vaseline) works very well for many people and is inexpensive. The area can be covered at night by a bandage or glove. Several people recommended saltwater soaks. One noted that the pure mountain water of Colorado Springs cured him in three days. Finally, one person recommended trimming the nails quite short. These home remedies have helped many. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: After an extreme case of vertigo, including vomiting and being taken to the emergency room, my unsteadiness remains. Over a week later, I need to use a walker to be safe. I am 79, and this happened once four years ago, but without the aftereffects. Any suggestions? -- M.W. ANSWER: The major causes of vertigo, acute labyrinthitis and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, often continue to produce attacks that tend to lessen in severity up to a month after the initial severe attack. A walker may be a useful precaution while recovering. If the problem persists, I strongly recommend a visit with a physical and/or occupational therapist for vestibular rehabilitation, which is physical therapy to restore balance. It also might be necessary to revisit your doctor to confirm the original diagnosis. The booklet on vertigo explains this disruptive condition in detail and outlines its treatment. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 801W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My 15-year-old son was just admitted to the hospital for depression and ADD. His thyroid tests came back abnormal. There is thyroid disease in the family. Is that the cause of his illness? -Anon. ANSWER: Thyroid conditions, including both hyper- (too much) and hypo- (too little) thyroid hormone are common in the general population, but more so in people who are diagnosed with a wide variety of psychiatric illnesses, including depression, anxiety and bipolar disorder. I have read that up to a third of people in new admissions for psychiatric conditions have thyroid abnormalities. It isn’t always clear whether the thyroid problem caused the psychiatric illness, and probably most often there is a large combination of factors, including genetics, environmental and medical conditions that affect the development of psychiatric conditions. It is clear that sometimes, but not always, treating the underlying thyroid condition can make managing the psychiatric symptoms much easier. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. * On Feb. 14, 278 A.D., Valentine, a priest in Rome, is executed for defying Emperor Claudius II and performing marriages in secret. Claudius believed that Roman men were unwilling to join his army because of their attachment to their families, and banned all marriages. Today, we celebrate Feb. 14 as Valentine’s Day. * On Feb. 13, 1633, Italian philosopher, astronomer and mathematician Galileo Galilei arrives in Rome to face charges of heresy for advocating that the Earth revolves around the Sun. Galileo remained under house arrest until his death in 1642. * On Feb. 19, 1777, the Continental Congress votes to promote five men to major general, but overlooks Benedict Arnold, who felt slighted and threatened to resign. In 1780, Arnold became the most famous traitor in American history when he offered to hand over West Point to the British. * On Feb. 16, 1894, gunslinger John Wesley Hardin is pardoned after spending 15 years in a Texas prison for murder. Hardin was reputed to have shot and killed a man just for snoring and had probably killed at least 40 people.

* On Feb. 17, 1904, Giacomo Puccini’s opera “Madame Butterfly” premieres in Milan, Italy. The audience responded with hissing and yelling. Four months later, a reworked “Madame Butterfly” opened to applause, repeated encores and 10 curtain calls. * On Feb. 15, 1965, a new Canadian national flag is raised in the capital of Ottawa. In 1964, the Canadian Parliament had voted to adopt a new design, a white background with a stylized 11-point red maple leaf in its center. * On Feb. 18, 2001, NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Sr. dies at age of 49 in a last-lap crash at the Daytona 500. While vying for third place in his famous black No. 3 Chevrolet, Earnhardt collided with another car, then crashed into a wall. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Any Given Sunday -

The New England Patriots are the greatest franchise in modern football history. That statement is irrefutable. This will be the team’s ninth Super Bowl appearance, their seventh -- seventh! -- with Tom Brady under center and Bill Belichick as head coach. This team has recorded 12 wins every year for the past decade. Despite the NFL’s absurd decision to try and vilify Tom Brady (which you could argue they did, with his four-game suspension to start the season), the Patriots lost two games. Two. That’s also how many interceptions Brady threw all season. Fans and pundits alike said that Brady would go on a Super Bowl tear this season, and guess what, they were right. This will be his seventh Super Bowl. Nobody, at any position, has ever played in seven Super Bowls. My dark-horse pick, the Atlanta Falcons, are back in the Super Bowl. I covered the Falcons the last time they made a Super Bowl, and let’s just say that it was an unmitigated disaster. From tragic off-field decisions to an even worse on-field game plan, that Falcons team deserved more. Atlanta deserved more. It’s time for Atlanta to win a championship. Even Cleveland and Oakland win championships these days, that town deserves a winner. In Matt Ryan, they have, arguably, the MVP. He was the league’s top-rated passer, eclipsing even Tom Brady, and in his marquee match-up against Aaron Rodgers, he excelled. Ryan impressed everyone this year, and during the playoffs he showed the heart of a champion. The guy stays in the pocket and he slings the leather. Will that be enough to beat the Patriots? While the Patriots keep going to Super Bowls, the “any given Sunday” rule has always applied to them. This Falcons team might have what it takes. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Drink Coffee, Live Longer

740-709-1608

Coffee, specifically the caffeine in it, helps reduce the chronic inflammation that occurs in our bodies as we age, according to a recent study out of Stanford University. Chronic inflammation can cause any number of problems, such as cardiovascular issues, Alzheimer’s disease, osteoarthritis and cancer, according to more than 1,000 research papers. Chronic inflammation starts with the breakdown of molecules in the blood, called metabolites. Coffee apparently has its own set of metabolites that work against those breakdown metabolites. But again, it’s the caffeine that does it, and researchers are confident that there’s a link between caffeine intake and living longer. Not everyone has a problem with inflammation, say the researchers, and those who don’t are generally people who drink beverages containing caffeine. For this study, researchers paired a large group of participants ages 20 to 30 with a group that’s been part of a long-term Stanford study, those who are over 60 years of age and have been monitored and tested for 10 years. They compared portions of the blood in both group, and here is what they found: --In the high-inflammation group, more people had high blood pressure, more free radicals running around the blood stream, and fewer relatives who’d live past the age of 90. --In the low-inflammation group, they found an abundance of the metabolites found in coffee, tea and chocolate. If you search online for sources of caffeine, you’ll be surprised at how many foods and drinks contain at least some of it. Ask your doctor how much caffeine is appropriate for you. Some prescription and over-the-counter drugs contain caffeine, and it can act as a diuretic and might have an effect on bone density. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

The biggest bonus will be in vitro fertilization (IVF), which had been banned until now. Additionally, there will be fertility counseling and treatments (assisted reproductive technologies, or ART) for the spouses of those veterans. The addition of IVF will be a huge step forward for veterans who were injured by explosions, leaving them unable to procreate due to genitourinary or spinal cord injury. Until now, the VA has provided certain services and treatments, limited to counseling, blood testing, surgical correction, medication, diagnostics and reversal of vasectomies and tubal ligations. The 2012 PCS Fact Sheet: Infertility and Assisted Reproductive Technologies specifically says, “The medical benefits package explicitly prohibits in vitro fertilization.” It did, however, cover in vitro for active-duty service members through the Department of Defense, but only six attempts in three IVF cycles. Additionally, “Only the veteran is eligible for the VA-covered infertility treatment services.” The new benefits are funded only through Sept. 30, 2018, so if you’re considering using any of these benefits, especially IVF, don’t delay. Those treatments don’t always “take” on the first attempt, so begin early. Call the VA now to schedule a consultation and evaluation if your injury is already documented as being service connected. If you need help filing a claim and proving service-connection, contact the Wounded Warrior Project [www. woundedwarriorproject.org or 1-877-832-6997]. If you want to read the complete rule in the Federal Register, go to www.federalregister.gov and search for Fertility Counseling and Treatment for Certain Veterans and Spouses, dated Jan. 19, 2017. To show how serious the VA is about this, it’s implemented the rule without delaying it for a public comment period. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
