This week, Tidbits delves into the history of some of the season’s most timeless melodies. • In 1857, James Lord Pierpont was the music director at a Savannah, Georgia church when he composed a happy little winter tune he entitled “One-Horse Open Sleigh,” later known as “Jingle Bells.” Just a few years later, he was composing “We Conquer or Die” and “Strike for the South,” Civil War marching songs. Pierpont wasn’t a native Southerner, and was in fact the son of a staunch abolitionist from Boston. • “Jingle Bells” was used as a part of a practical joke played by Gemini 6 astronauts Wally Schirra and Tom Stafford during their December, 1965 spaceflight. They radioed back to Mission Control that they had sighted some type of flying object that looked “like a satellite…a command module and eight smaller modules in front” with a pilot “wearing a red suit.” This was followed up by their rendition of “Jingle Bells,” accompanied by a harmonica and sleigh bells they had smuggled aboard the craft. That Hohner’s harmonica and those bells can be seen at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, displayed as the first musical instruments played in space. turn the page for more!

HOLIDAY MUSIC (continued): • Two record producers from Denmark came up with the idea of splicing together recordings of dogs barking into the pattern of songs. In 1955, the two used five dogs – Dolly, Pearl, Pussy, Caesar, and King – to create The Singing Dogs performing “Jingle Bells,” a rendition that has become a well-known holiday favorite of most radio stations. • Written in 1864, “Up on the Housetop” is the second-oldest secular Christmas song, after “Jingle Bells.” It was composed by Benjamin Hanby, who wrote 80 other songs, before perishing from tuberculosis at age 33. It seems that Hanby was inspired by Clement Moore’s poem “Twas the Night Before Christmas,” the first piece of writing that spoke of Santa’s sleigh and his reindeer landing on rooftops. The most well-known recording of this song was by cowboy singer Gene Autry in 1953. • “Silent Night” comes to us from the German language, from words written by Father Josef Mohn, a priest in a tiny Austrian village. “Stille Nacht” was set to music in 1818 by the church organist Franz Gruber, who wrote the music for guitar, since the church’s pipe organ was in disrepair. • Written in 1943 in the midst of World War II, “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” was written to honor GI’s serving overseas and their families. Composer Kimball Gannon sang the song for singer Bing Crosby while the two were playing golf to get his opinion. Crosby recorded the tune, which was a chart-topper for eleven weeks and became Crosby’s fifth gold record. When Gannon died in 1974, he bequeathed the rights to the song to the American Heart Association, which has benefited from the gift since that time.

Don’t Let Holidays Stress Your Pets
It’s that time of year again: the mistletoe comes out, the tree is lit up (as is Uncle Fred), the aroma of baked goods and ham or turkey wafts through the house, and friends and family crowd into each other’s homes for parties, dinners and gift exchanges. This can be a lot of fun for the humans, but for many pets, the holidays are a time of great stress. Whether dog, cat, hamster or goldfish, Christmas and New Year’s bring a risk of increased anxiety and health issues from an influx of unfamiliar people, altered daily schedules, noise, tempting foods and more. Here are a few guidelines to help keep your pets comfortable and healthy during this hectic season: * Keep pets as close to their daily routines as possible: feed, walk, play with and do other regular activities at the same times. * Make sure dogs and cats are kept out of the kitchen while cooking and baking is going on:

Many ingredients in holiday dishes can cause digestive issues, and some foods -- like chocolate, onions and grapes -- are poisonous. * Have a plan for pets before holiday gatherings: set up a safe room or kennel cage where they can stay during the party. * If possible, relocate aquariums and terrariums to quiet, dark rooms ahead of holiday gatherings so fish and reptiles are left undisturbed. * If tanks can’t be moved, instruct guests not to touch or tap the glass. You may even want to put a big sign on the side of the tank telling them so. * If you suspect a pet has ingested some of the food, candies or alcohol at a party or dinner, monitor it closely. Online at www.lovemytidbits.com HOLIDAY MUSIC (continued): • A 34-year-old copyrighter working for the department store chain Montgomery Ward in 1939 was the creator of one of the season’s most beloved characters, Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer. Robert May was given the assignment of coming up with a story for a holiday promotional booklet for distribution to customers to replace the coloring books they had circulated in previous years. May, who had been teased as a child for his shyness and short stature, used the same theme for his red-nosed reindeer, who was made fun of for being different. Montgomery Ward sold nearly 2.5 million copies that year. When they reissued it in 1946, sales were 3.5 million copies. Unfortunately, because May was an employee of the store, Ward’s owned the copyright, and it was several years before May convinced them to allow him the rights. In 1949, May’s brother-in-law penned one of the most loved holiday tunes of all time, based on the story. Cowboy singer Gene Autry recorded the song and sold over two million copies the first year. • The name Johnny Marks might not be familiar to you, but you’ve certainly heard his compositions hundreds of times. Johnny Marks was the brother-in-law of Robert May, and the one who set “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” to music. But that wasn’t his only Christmas song by any means. Marks also gave us “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas,” “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” “The Night Before Christmas Song,” “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day,” and “When Santa Claus Gets Your Letter,” among many others. • The English melody “Greensleeves” was composed in 1580, but it wasn’t until 1865 that William Dix wrote the poem “The Manger Throne,” which was fitted into the “Greensleeves” tune. We know this Christmas carol as “What Child Is This?”

Crosby didn’t record the song until the following May, and the song was used in the movie “Holiday Inn” later that year. The song was given the Oscar for the Best Song of 1942. It’s the most-recorded holiday song, with more than 500 versions over the years, selling more than 100 million copies around the world. • “Carol of the Bells” is a Ukrainian folk song originally titled “Shchedryk.” It tells the story of a swallow flying into a home to sing of a bountiful year that will follow. It was first performed in Ukraine on New Year’s Eve, 1915, and in the United States, at Carnegie Hall in 1921. In January, 1921, the composer of the song, Mykola Leontovych, was murdered by a Soviet state security agent for his participation in the Ukrainian independence movement. • “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” was written in 1966 as part of the Dr. Seuss TV special “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” Dr. Seuss wrote the lyrics to this classic. Thurl Ravenscroft was the vocalist for the song. You may not remember Ravenscroft’s name, but his voice is most recognizable as Tony the Tiger in ads for Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes, when he growls, “They’re g-r-reat!” •
“O Little Town of Bethlehem” was composed by an Episcopal clergyman, Phillips Brooks, who visited the Holy Land in 1865. He was so inspired by his surroundings that he penned a poem of his thoughts in 1867, words that were set to music by the organist at his Philadelphia church.

This week, Tidbits focuses on that little pest that everyone loves to hate, the mosquito. • The word “mosquito” has its origins in the Spanish language, translating to “little fly.” They are part of the same family as houseflies and fruit flies. • Water is a requirement for all mosquitoes to breed. Just a few inches of water, such as a puddle after a rainstorm or a birdbath, are enough for the female to deposit eggs. After obtaining a full meal of blood, she rests for a few days digesting the blood as the eggs develop. She will lay up to 200 eggs. Her lifespan won’t be much more than two weeks. • You’ll never be bitten by a male mosquito, only a female. She needs protein for her eggs, and must feed on blood in order to reproduce. Her mouthparts are much more specialized than the males to provide for her blood sucking. While she is busy feasting on humans, the male feeds solely on flower nectar. The female’s pointed mandibles pierce the skin, while the maxillae have flat, toothed blades. • When the female bites, she injects her saliva into a human’s skin, which acts as an anticoagulant, preventing her mouth parts from becoming clogged. Her saliva causes an allergic response in the human immune system, creating the itchy bump we call a mosquito bite. Did you know that the official name for that bump is a wheal? It continues to itch until the body’s immune cells break down the proteins of the saliva.

• How does the female find her victim? With an acute sensitivity to carbon dioxide in the air, she can detect the CO2 produced by humans and animals from 75 feet (22.9 m) away. The female skeeter prefers some humans over other based on the smell of their sweat. She has 72 different types of odor receptors on her antennae that detect the compounds in body odor. The mosquito also likes those with a lot of body heat, with a fair amount of skin bacteria, and those who are pregnant. • Because humans exhale CO2 through the nose and mouth, mosquitoes are especially attracted to our heads, accounting for those times they annoyingly buzz in our ears. • A female skeeter can suck more than 10 oz. (300 ml) of blood each day. • Although a mosquito’s wings can beat up to 600 times per second, its flying speed is between only 1 and 1.5 mph (1.6 to 2.4 km/h), making them one of the slowest flying insects of all. Even butterflies and honeybees fly faster. • We humans aren’t the only creatures annoyed by mosquitoes. Certain species don’t bite humans and feed exclusively on birds, while others prefer reptiles, amphibians and fish. • If you think that sharks and snakes are deadly, consider the fact that the mosquito is actually the most deadly creature in the animal world, causing more deaths than any other. They accomplish this through the spreading of diseases, such as malaria, yellow fever, and encephalitis. One mosquito carrying malaria can infect more than 100 people. More than 250 million people are infected with malaria every year, with the death toll at about one million, killing a child in Africa every 45 seconds.

BOXING DAY
December 26 is known as Boxing Day in England, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. No, it’s not a day devoted to the sport of prizefighting, but rather a day of goodwill. Read along and learn the facts about this British holiday. • There are differing theories as to the purpose and date of the origin of Boxing Day. Some historians believe the holiday developed during the Middle Ages. Servants, who were required to work on Christmas Day, were given December 26 as a day off. As they were leaving to visit their families, employees traditionally presented them with gift boxes. According to tradition, the Christmas box was made of clay. • Another theory of the origin of this holiday is related to the Feast of St. Stephen. This feast day also falls on December 26, and is named for one of the seven original deacons of the early Christian Church. Stephen was ordained by the Apostles to care for widows, orphans, and the poor. (He was later stoned to death by an angry mob.) Metal boxes were placed in churches for attendees to place coins for the poor, and on December 26, the funds were distributed among those in need. • The Boxing Day gift giving has expanded to include all those who provide a service during the year, such as doormen, mail carriers, tradesmen, and porters. • Since 1871, Boxing Day has been recognized as a bank holiday on which banks, government offices, and the post office are closed. • The British engage in several types of entertainment and activities on Boxing Day. Some swim the icy waters of the English Channel, while others participate in charity events and fun runs. Several prestigious horse races are held that day, along with football games featuring top-rated teams.

• In Australia, the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race is an annual Boxing Day event. Established in 1945, this is one of the world’s top three offshore yacht races and is one of the most difficult. The record setting time for the 630 nautical miles (1,170 km) distance from Sydney to Hobart, Tasmania, was set in 2012, with the winner crossing the finish line in 1 day, 18 hours, 23 minutes, and 12 seconds. • Prior to 2004, Britain’s main Boxing Day activity was fox hunting. That year, the Hunting Act prohibited the pursuit of foxes with hounds in England and Wales. Although an estimated 80% of citizens supposedly oppose hunting with dogs for sport, 250 different hunts with more than 250,000 people in attendance are still held. However, the protocol has changed since 2004, with hunters in traditional red hunting coats astride their steeds still following the sound of the horn, but with the dogs following artificially-laid trails. A fox may be flushed out, but killing it is prohibited. • In the retail world, Boxing Day is similar to the U.S. “Black Friday” day after Thanksgiving, when retailers have gigantic sales with huge price reductions. However, in some areas of eastern Canada, retailers are prohibited from opening on Boxing Day by provincial law, with the intention of providing a day of rest following Christmas Day.

By Keith Roach, M. D, Zero-Calorie Drinks No Match for Water DEAR DR. ROACH: I walk 30-60 minutes about four times a week and drink several times from a water bottle that I carry with me. Would it be OK to occasionally substitute caffeine-free diet soda for the water? ANSWER: I’ve talked a few times about diet soda, and the controversy about whether it helps people lose weight or whether, despite having zero calories, it makes people more likely to gain weight. There has been evidence for both. A recent and fascinating study was published showing that artificially sweetened beverages predispose a person to higher blood sugars, and that the effect was due to changes in the bacteria in our gut (called the microbiome). These bacteria have become the focus of intensive study of how important they are for our overall health. I recommend against habitual use of artificially sweetened beverages. Occasional use of diet soda is unlikely to harm much; however, water -- still or bubbly, plain or with a wedge of fruit -- is the best and most natural way to hydrate. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 68 years old, and will be having bypass surgery soon. After my surgery, will L-arginine be good for my heart? I know I will be walking every day. -- G.J.S. ANSWER: L-arginine, an amino acid, has been shown to increase nitric oxide in blood vessels of people with high blood cholesterol and blockages in their arteries. There are two studies I know of that showed no effect from arginine on blood flow or inflammation. On the other hand, one study showed that supplements of arginine, along with phytoestrogens, B vitamins and vitamins C and E (as part of a medical nutrition bar) in people with angina improved some blood flow measurements and the ability to exercise on the treadmill. It also has been shown to have some benefits in people with heart failure. Based on these studies, I don’t recommend arginine after cardiac bypass surgery. However, there may some benefit, and since it is unlikely to be harmful, I wouldn’t try to dissuade someone who wanted to give it a try. The booklet on heart attacks, America’s No. 1 killer, explains what happens, how they are treated and how they can be avoided. ROACH: I had radiation treatment in 2011 for a goiter. I know tanning beds are very dangerous, but are spray tans dangerous for me? -- V.V. ANSWER: Dihydroxyacetone, the most common coloring agent in spray-on tans, is generally considered safe, but you should avoid getting it around your eyes, mouth and nose. There is some controversy, but the Food and Drug Administration has considered it safe. The radiation treatment for goiter slightly increases risk for cancer, especially leukemia. I think it reasonable to do what you can to reduce cancer risk, but I don’t think tanning spray is a big risk. Wow! Grapefruit Baked Alaska Greet the new year with a showy, wintry dessert. It’s a take on traditional Baked Alaska that you may have enjoyed at a fancy restaurant. This mini version is much easier, using fresh grapefruit in its own “bowl” instead of cake, but still keeps the “wow” factor with billowing warm meringue on top and chilly ice cream nestled inside. Timing is everything. Do some simple prep work beforehand. Then, as the table is being cleared after your main course, preheat the oven and whip the egg whites while your child spoons fruit into the grapefruit bowls and tops each with ice cream and mounds of sweet meringue.

15 minutes before serving: 4. Heat oven to 400 F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper or foil. Have child spoon refrigerated grapefruit pieces evenly into the six grapefruit “bowls” and set them on the baking sheet. 5. In a mixing bowl, with an electric mixer set at low speed, beat egg whites until frothy and foamy. Add cream of tartar. Increase speed until soft peaks form. Slowly add sugar, a tablespoon at a time. Let your kids watch as the mixture changes and enlarges, and glossy, stiff peaks form. 6. Set an ice-cream round in center of each fruit-filled bowl. Immediately spoon the stiff meringue on top, and seal edges around the cut grapefruit rim with a butter knife. Bake in the middle of the oven for 5 minutes, or until meringue is golden. 7. Serve immediately on dessert plates. Makes 6 servings. GRAPEFRUIT BAKED ALASKA 4 grapefruits 6 scoops vanilla ice cream 3 egg whites (1/2 cup) at room temperature 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract One hour or more before serving: 1. Prepare grapefruit by cutting evenly in half crosswise. Use a grapefruit knife to cut out fruit sections. Place in a bowl and drain juice (enjoy drinking it for a snack). If grapefruit is rather tart, add some sugar. Cover and refrigerate. 2. Remove and discard membranes in six of the halves to form hollow “bowls,” and discard the two remaining grapefruit halves. (You are using 6 halves for the dessert, but the fruit from 4 grapefruits to have ample servings.) 3. Pre-scoop ice cream in six rounds on a tray lined with wax paper or plastic wrap. Place back in freezer.

$ Good Luck Moving On As the playoff picture shapes up, New York Giants would like to remind you that the Dallas Cowboys haven’t won anything worth shouting about yet. The Giants, however, have to know all too well that their plan on offense most closely resembles something you would find on a typical JV high school’s squad: have your good quarterback throw passes to your great wide receiver the ENTIRE game or die trying. There is no doubt that Eli Manning is one of the game’s all-time great quarterbacks, and Odell Beckham Jr., even if he never catches another pass, will still be rembered as having the best start of any wide receiver in NFL history. But how long can the Giants go with this game plan? Actually, the better question to ask is how deep can the Giants go in the playoffs with that plan and zero running game. True, there is a certain charm to the Manning-Beckham plan. For one thing, you don’t need to be a technical football wiz to understand what is going on there. They’re calling the same plays you did when you huddled up in your backyard as a kid: “You get open, and I will throw the ball to you, and then you just outrun everybody and score. Got it? OK! Break!” For the time being, this strategy has largely worked. That’s because Odell Beckham Jr. is just that good. He is a game breaker, he is young and healthy, he can catch, he’s a fierce competitor, and he’s got turbo jets. As long as the Giants’ truly superb defense is around, the G-men can get away with this plan. As for Dallas, the team that beat everyone but the Giants, they still have one of the greatest offensive lines in modern times. They don’t just give rookie sensation Dak Prescott time to throw ... they give him enough time to drop back and meditate, write a little bit in his journal, eat a yogurt with fruit on the bottom (ya know, the kind you have to stir), call to check in on his mama and decide he needs to buy a house out in Hackensack before throwing a pass. But when he ends up on the short end of a throwback 10-7 game against the Giants, people jump to conclusions. Seven points? Is that all you get for your money? The question there is whether Dallas fans and Romo-smitten owner Jerry Jones will have the patience to stick with the kid once they’re in the playoffs. After all, if you’re going to use Romo, the clock is ticking. At best, has about two seasons left before he succumbs to chronic, lifelong pain. But it would seem such a waste of time to try and develop Prescott only to bail on the guy come playoff time. If the franchise is eyeing another dynasty, it’d be foolish to jump off that Patriot-esque potential 10-year train. Dallas should look at Romo as being the best backup quarterback since Johnny Unitas. He can still chip in. We’ve seen him play long enough to know by now that if he can’t drive the Cowboys with a broken back, at least he can polish the fenders. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. Sweet, salty and crunchy, you’ll want to make this addictive bark in big batches -- it’s sure to go quickly. 3 tablespoons corn syrup 2 tablespoons sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 cups peanuts 12 ounces semisweet chocolate, melted 1. Heat oven to 350 F. 2. In large bowl, combine corn syrup, sugar and salt. Stir in peanuts to evenly coat. Spread in single layer on parchment paper-lined jellyroll pan. 3. Better With Age If you haven’t retired and you work for a company that is trying to ease you out due to age, a recent study might change some minds. The brief from the Center for Retirement Research describes how and why older workers stay productive, and compares accumulated information and experience with the ability to process new information. That accumulated information (called “crystallized intelligence”) won out in many cases over new information gathering, called “fluid intelligence.” Younger workers just haven’t had enough years on the job in many fields to accumulate that crystallized intelligence. At the same time, there are certain fields where we might not want to stay employed as we age. In a test of air traffic controllers, older participants did not do as well as the younger ones because new information (fluid intelligence) had to be assessed on a second-by-second basis. “Old” accumulated information had no value in this case. Surgery is another field, and the researchers suggest that people be screened after age 60 for cognitive decline. One test, however, showed the value of age and experience --- the ability to finish a New York Times crossword puzzle. Participants at age 20 didn’t do well at all. As the age of participants increased, so did their ability to complete the puzzle. Even 80-year-olds did slightly better than those who were 60, proving that information and knowledge still are being accumulated at that age, even though there’s no need to learn new skills. Those who had changed careers along the way didn’t fare as well in crystallized intelligence because they had fewer years to gather information. Tidbits® of Gallia, Jackson, Vinton, Meigs & Mason Counties Improved Veterans Health Care Act
Democrats and Republicans shook hands across the aisle in the U. S. House of Representatives and voted unanimously to pass the Veterans Health Care and Benefits Improvement Act of 2016. Here are some highlights. * Section 301: Until now, survivors of veterans who died after Nov. 1, 1990, and who provided a privately paid-for headstone for their veteran could apply for a service medallion to be put on that headstone. Section 301 makes that any veteran who served after April 6, 1917. * Section 303: In some places, the coroner’s office holds unclaimed remains of veterans who died without family. Often a town’s citizens will get together, along with local veterans groups, to provide a funeral and burial. Section 303 requires a study of this with a report to Congress. * Section 401: The Fry Scholarship provides education benefits to spouses and children of veterans who died on active duty after Sept. 10, 2001. It extends the eligibility period for five years. * Section 501: If a veteran dies as a result of service-connected disability (100 percent rating) and owned a small business, the spouse will be allowed to own and control the business for 10 years. If the veteran had a 10 percent disability, the time will be three years. * Section 603: Medal of Honor recipients who are now in Priority Group 3 of the Department of Veterans Affairs health care system will be moved up to Group 1. They will be eligible for extended care, and co-payments will be eliminated. * Section 632: Children across the country were medically affected by toxins (Agent Orange and others) in their military parents. This section requires an agreement with the National Academy of Medicine to conduct research on those descendants. Hopefully the Act will pass the Senate as it is, with no changes. Cross your fingers.
