More than 168,000 cubic meters (6 million cubic ft) of water go over Niagara Falls every minute during peak hours. It has the highest flow rate of any waterfall in the world, with a vertical drop of more than 165 feet (50 m). Come with Tidbits as we remember daredevils and fools who have gone over the falls. OVER A BARREL ● Annie Edson Taylor was the first person ever to go over Niagara in a barrel. A widowed and unemployed schoolteacher, she was 63 years old in 1901 when she pulled off the stunt on her birthday. She was strapped into a harness inside an oak wine barrel padded with cushions. A bicycle pump was used to increase the air pressure inside the barrel after she climbed in. Then she was towed into the river above the falls. After the plunge, she spent 17 minutes bobbing around before assistants were able to snag the barrel and pull her to shore. Emerging dazed but unhurt, she said, “No one ought ever do that again.” She was incoherent for several days afterwards. Alas, the fame and fortune she was hoping for eluded her – perhaps because she was neither young nor beautiful – and she spent the next 20 years working as a Niagara street vendor, selling photos of herself with her barrel for a penny. She died, destitute and unknown, 20 years later. ontinued next page

OVER A BARREL (cont’d) ● Circus stuntman Bobby Leach went over the falls in a steel barrel in 1911, surviving with minor injuries. While on tour with his famous barrel in New Zealand in 1925, he slipped on an orange peel on a street and fell. He broke his leg, which later had to be amputated, leading to gangrene, which killed him. ● On the 4th of July in 1928, Mr. Jean Lussier survived the trip not in a barrel but in a 6-foot rubber ball lined with rubber tubes and filled with oxygen. The tubes had valves that could be released, providing oxygen should he become trapped behind the falls. He was the first person to take the trip in an inflatable device instead of the more traditional wooden barrels or steel drums. After bobbing about at the bottom of the falls for an hour, he was pulled to shore and emerged unharmed in front of an audience of over 100,000. Afterwards he sold small souvenir pieces of the inner tubes for fifty cents each. When he ran out of authentic pieces, he peddled rubber purchased from a nearby tire store. ● 46-year-old Greek chef George Strathakis went over in 1930 to generate publicity for his book entitled The Mysterious Veil of Humanity Through the Ages, which was a rambling incoherent treatise. His barrel was trapped behind the falls for over 14 hours before it finally broke loose. Strathakis, with only enough oxygen for several hours, suffocated. However, his pet turtle named Sonny Boy, reputed to be 105 years old and taken along for good luck, survived. ● Nathan Boya made the trip in 1961 in a steel sphere covered by six layers of rubber, which he called the “Plunge-o-Sphere.” He included 13 canisters of oxygen on the advice of Jean Lussier. He emerged unhurt to find the police waiting for him. He was fined $100 – the minimum sentence for violating the Niagara Parks Act – and he had to pay court costs of $13.

Combating Cat Hair Q: Help! I love my cat "Buttercup," but he has long hair and tends to shed. My furniture and carpets are covered with cat hair, and it's very hard to clean up. Do you have any tips to reduce the shedding? -- Gail F., Indianapolis A: Pet hair is one of the biggest little problems a pet owner can have. For some it's more than a nuisance, as the dander that cats and dogs shed can aggravate allergies. If your pet is shedding more than usual, take it to the vet for a checkup to rule out any illness. However, it's not unusual for many pets to shed constantly, and you have to tackle the issue daily. Here are a few tips to reduce cleanup, courtesy of Bissell: ● Pick up hard-to-reach hair from furniture by putting on a pair of rubber gloves, wetting them under the tap, then running the damp gloves over the furniture.

● Put mats in entryways and over areas of the carpet where your pet spends its time. ● Brush your pet daily to reduce the amount of hair that is shed elsewhere in the house. ● Vacuum carpets and furniture daily, or as often as possible, to reduce fur and dander. On another note, you may see pet foods advertised that claim to help reduce shedding. I'm not sure that any pet food has been proven to do so. However, many owners recommend a high-quality diet with plenty of protein, along with a fish-oil supplement, which they say improves their pet's coat. Various keys would continue to be broken by the Brits over the next year, each conveying information of even higher secrecy and priority. ● On July 11, 1979, parts of Skylab, America's first space station, come crashing down on Australia and into the Indian Ocean five years after the last manned Skylab mission ended. The cylindrical space station was 118 feet tall and weighed 77 tons. ● On July 10, 1985, in Auckland harbor in New Zealand, Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior sinks after French agents in diving gear plant a bomb on the hull of the vessel. A British newspaper uncovered evidence of French President Francois Mitterrand's authorization of the bombing plan.

OVER A BARREL (cont’d) ● Karel Soucek became the first Canadian to survive the plunge. In 1984 he went over in a cylindrical barrel with fiberglass moldings, liquid foam insulation, a two-way radio, and a snorkel for breathing. The fall took 3.2 seconds and the force of the fall snapped off his radio antennae, leaving him without communication. He was trapped in dangerous waters for 45 minutes before being pulled free. He suffered only minor injuries. He was fined $500. Six months later he was re-creating the spectacle at the Houston Astrodome in front of 45,000 spectators. His barrel was lifted to the top of the astrodome by a crane and released above a water tank only ten feet wide and ten feet deep. It hit the edge of the tank and he was killed. He was buried at the Niagara Falls cemetery. Of all the people who have gone over the falls seeking fame and fortune, he came the closest to achieving it. He would have earned a quarter million dollars through public appearance contracts in the year following the feat if he hadn’t died in Houston. ● Dave Munday, a mechanic and skydiving instructor from Ontario, has dared the falls on several occasions. In 1985 a police officer witnessed him enter the water and immediately radioed the Hydro Control Dam upstream. They cut the water flow of the Niagara River and the water level dropped five feet in three minutes. The barrel got stuck in shallow water a mile above the rim of the falls. But Dave Munday was persistent. Later that year he tried again, this time launching himself scant yards above the falls, and made the trip successfully in an aluminum barrel equipped with video and radio equipment. In another attempt in 1990, his barrel got stuck on rocks at the very brink of the falls and he had to be rescued by a cable on a crane. In September of 1993 he tried again, this time in a converted diving bell. At age 56, became the first person to go over the falls twice.

● It was French Enlightenment writer Voltaire who made the following sage observation: "Faith consists in believing when it is beyond the power of reason to believe." ● If Niagara Falls emptied into the Grand Canyon, the giant chasm would be filled within 6 months. ● Next time you're rolling the dice, pick up a die and take a closer look. The opposite sides of each gaming cube always add up to 7. ● You might think of Uncle Sam as a fictional character, but he's actually based in fact. The original Uncle Sam was one Samuel Wilson, born in Massachusetts in 1766. When he was 14 years old, he joined the army to fight in the American Revolution. Once the war was over, he moved to Troy, N.Y., started working in the meat-packing industry, and became known locally as "Uncle Sam" due to his jovial manner and ethical business practices. During the War of 1812, Sam won a contract to provide meat to troops stationed nearby. To keep track of which crates of meat were destined for the troops, he stamped "U.S." on them, even though that abbreviation for United States was not yet in common use. When his packing plant was inspected in October of 1812, a government inspector asked a nearby worker what "U.S." stood for. Unsure of the abbreviation himself, the worker replied that it must stand for the name of the owner, Uncle Sam. Though the answer was in error, it took hold, and soldiers soon began calling military rations "bounty of Uncle Sam." ● If you remember the early-1960s TV series "Route 66," you might be surprised to learn that the show was actually shot in Florida and Oregon, nowhere near the fabled highway. For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 OVER A BARREL (cont’d) ● A Rhode Island bartender named Steven Trotter wrapped two plastic pickle barrels in inner tubes and a tarp and went over the falls in 1985. At the age of 22, he became the youngest person ever to make the trip. He was fined over $5,000 for the stunt, but he more than made up for that with his talk show fees. On the tenth anniversary of the stunt, he returned with a woman named Lori Martin and they became the first co-ed couple to go over together. This time instead of pickle barrels, Trotter used hot water tanks welded together, covered with Kevlar, and equipped with oxygen tanks – a contraption that weighed 900 lbs. and is reputed to have cost some $19,000. The barrel became trapped in a rock crevice at the base of the waterfall. Members of the fire department and the police department were able to reach the barrel and pop the hatch, releasing the two unharmed occupants. The barrel remained lodged in place for 9 days before being removed by a crane. Trotter later returned to reclaim the barrel, but he had to pay the costs of the rescue before they handed it over. ● In 1989, Peter DeBernardi and Geoffrey Petkovich, Canadian residents of Niagara Falls, were the first people to go over the falls as a team, face to face in the same ten-foot steel barrel. They had known each other only a couple of months. DeBernardi’s original partner had chickened out and Petkovich took his place. The steel-plated barrel was equipped with oxygen, two-way radio equipment, and two plexiglass windows. It was painted with the slogan, “Don’t put yourself on the edge – Drugs Kill.” The team suffered only minor injuries and refused treatment. Petkovich, who had been drinking, emerged wearing only a necktie and cowboy boots. They were promptly arrested by the Niagara Parks Police and charged with infractions.

WOMEN IN HISTORY MAUD WILLARD ● Maud Willard was born in Canton, Ohio around 1875. She became a dance hall actress but longed for more. Money was tight and she wanted to buy a home for her aging mother. She decided she needed a big dose of fame to put her on the path to riches. There was only one way to do that: Niagara Falls. ● At that point, going over Niagara Falls in a barrel had not yet been done. However, plenty of people had crossed the waterfall on tightropes or swum the rapids below the falls. A barrel maker named Carlisle Graham rocketed to fame by building his own barrel in which he successfully negotiated the rapids below the falls. The stunt resulted in so much publicity that he repeated the feat four more times. He nearly died on his fifth trip on July 14, 1901, when the barrel got caught in the whirlpool downstream from the falls. By the time he made it to shore, he was half dead from suffocation. ● By now, negotiating the rapids in a barrel had become passé, and Carlisle needed something better to regain the spotlight. His opportunity arose when Maud Willard approached him, saying she wanted to be the first woman to float the rapids of Niagara using one of Carlisle’s barrels. Carlisle decided that to get his share of the publicity, he would seal Maud in the barrel, and after it had negotiated the rapids, he would jump in the river and swim alongside it all the way to Lewiston, several miles downstream. ● They chose the date September 7, 1901 for two reasons. First, the Pan-American Exposition being held nearby in Buffalo, New York, was bringing record numbers of tourists to Niagara. Second, President William McKinley was scheduled to visit the Expo on that day, guaranteeing record crowds. Carlisle arranged for movie cameras to film the entire stunt.

First, Leon Czolgosz assassinated President McKinley that day, which drew attention away from Maud and Carlisle’s stunt. Second, Maud decided her pet dog, a fox terrier, would ride along with her in the barrel. Little did she realize that this would turn out to be a fatal mistake. ● Still, things proceeded as planned. Maud crawled into the barrel. With her dog in her lap, the barrel was sealed, except for a single hole through which she could get fresh air. A boat towed it into the river. A film crew was positioned to capture the event on film. ● But then the barrel got caught in the grip of the giant whirlpool. Carlisle waited for the whirlpool to release the barrel from its grip so that he could join it in the water and proceed downstream to Lewiston as planned. When an hour went by with the barrel still floating helplessly, and with dusk quickly approaching, Carlisle decided to go ahead with his swim without Maud and her barrel. The film crew followed him downriver. ● Hours later, Carlisle triumphantly climbed out of the Niagara River at Lewiston. When he returned to the whirlpool to check on Maud’s progress, he was dismayed to find the barrel still trapped in the current. It was 9:30pm by the time the barrel came close enough to shore to be hauled out of the water. By then, Maud and her little dog had been in the water for more than five hours. ● When the lid was removed, Maud’s dog jumped out unhurt. However, Maud Willard was not so lucky. All efforts to revive her were in vain. The barrel had only one air hole. It was believed that her pet dog stuck his nose out the hole, depriving her of oxygen and contributing to her death by suffocation. Maud’s mother died of the shock a few days later, and they were buried side by side.

Q: I have a condiment cruet set that includes containers for mustard, salt, pepper, vinegar and oil. It is just over 7 inches high and is in the Blue Willow pattern. The only mark is "Japan." I love the set and use it every day, but have always been curious if it has much value. -- Laura, Ramona, Calif. A: Your cruet set is worth in the $175 to $200 range, according to Mary Frank Gaston, a collector and expert. She is the author of "Blue Willow: An Identification and Price Guide" published by Collector Books. Q: I have a copy of Time magazine dated March 3, 1923, which is Vol. 1, No. 1, the premiere issue. It is in fairly good condition, and I need to determine if it is a reprint or an original. -- John, Sun City West, Ariz. A: Time was founded by Henry Luce and Briton Hadden. Their aim was to produce a publication that featured short, concise summaries of events. The magazine, even from the beginning, was extremely popular. To determine if you have an original issue, I suggest you show it to some of the established used and rare book dealers in your area. This first issued has been reprinted several times, so an expert's opinion is certainly necessary. According to several collectors I contacted, if it is authentic and in good to very good condition, it would retail for about $150. The first issue of Life Magazine, published Nov. 23, 1936, generally sells in the $75 to $150 range. Q: After my father passed away, I came across several old stocks and bonds dating back to 1918-1929. Some of them are from the National Diversified Corporation, Buffalo Oil and Gas, Texlovana Producing Refining and Hannibal Rubber Company. Stirring an antimony sulfide and potassium chlorate-based formula with a wood stick, he noticed a tear-drop shaped glob had dried on the stick’s tip. He scraped the stick against the stone floor to remove it and, to his surprise, the stick caught on fire. ● In 1827 Walker began selling “Friction Lights” but he never applied for a patent. They had tips coated with a potassium chlorideantimony sulfide paste, which ignited when scraped between a fold of sandpaper. They came in a tin, each with a piece of sandpaper. The user folded this over the match, held it tightly and pulled the splint hard. Walker made little money off the invention and copy-cats soon abounded. There were problems with the matches, however. They ignited with the force of a firework and they smelled terrible. ● In 1830, French chemist Charles Sauria discovered how to make matches using white phosphorus instead. They didn’t smell as bad, they burned longer, and they were less explosive. However, it turned out to be a disastrous development due to the toxic nature of the phosphorus. Inhaling fumes from burnt matches had deadly consequences. When the fumes of white phosphorus are inhaled, or when fingers that have contacted phosphorus contact the mouth, or when a drinking glass is used that has been in the presence of phosphorus fumes, the toxin enters the body. A single pack of matches contained enough phosphorus to kill a person. ● A French scientist named Georges Lemoine found that red phosphorus was not poisonous. A patent was filed on this method of matchmaking in 1898. ● The Diamond Match Company purchased the patent and then, at the urging of President Taft, made the patent public domain so that all match manufacturers could use the formula without paying royalties.

Tomato Dill Penne If you're like most folks, you just can't wait for those first tomatoes, plucked right off the vine. It really doesn't matter where that vine is -- be it in your own back yard or from the local farmer's market -- as long as they are locally grown. Try this easy recipe to showcase those homegrown tomatoes. 2 cups peeled and chopped fresh tomatoes 1 cup hot cooked penne or rotini pasta, rinsed and drained
Sugar substitute to equal 2 tablespoons sugar, suitable for cooking 1 teaspoon dried dill weed 2 teaspoons reduced-calorie margarine 1/8 teaspoon black pepper 1. In a large skillet sprayed with butter-flavored cooking spray, saute tomatoes for 5 minutes. Add penne, sugar substitute, dill weed, margarine and black pepper. Mix well to combine. 2. Lower heat and simmer for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring often. Serve at once. Makes 2 (1 cup) servings. ● Each serving equals: 155 calories, 3g fat, 5g protein, 27g carb., 60mg sodium, 3g fiber; Diabetic Exchanges: 2 Vegetable, 1 Starch, 1/2 Fat.

MATCHES (cont’d) DIAMOND MATCH COMPANY ● The increasing popularity of smoking coupled with the advent of gas for lighting and heat caused the demand for matches to skyrocket. Mechanized methods of matchmaking were needed. To solve this difficulty, the country’s largest manufacturers banded together in 1881 to form a single company, The Diamond Match Company. The best features of the machinery that each had developed individually were combined. MODERN MATCHMAKING ● The machines that turn out StrikeAnywhere matches at the rate of more than 300 a second are about 60 feet long and two stories high. Wooden matches are made out of white pine or aspen wood. It takes an hour for a splint of wood to travel through the factory. ● The matchbook became the “best read book in America” and the warning, “Close Cover Before Striking” became the most printed phrase in the history of the printed word. For 40 years, matchbooks were the most popular advertising medium in the nation. ● Matchbooks are one of the most popular collectibles in the world. In the U.S. it’s the second most popular collecting hobby after stamps. People who collect them are called phillumenists, meaning ‘lovers of light.’ Today, more book matches are used than any other kind. ● The market for matches has declined by some 80 percent since the introduction of the disposable lighter in 1972.

Page 9 Summer Compost Heap Q: I recently moved into my first house and am eagerly starting a garden along with a compost pile. A few friends said I'd be better off just prepping the soil for now and waiting to start the compost until fall. But I want to start as soon as possible. What do you think? -- Sarah in Upstate New York A: The great thing about having your own house is you can do pretty much whatever you like with your garden, compost pile, yard and so on -- as long as it doesn't violate local ordinances. If you want to plant a garden now, choose plants that will produce vegetables or flowers within 90 days so that you'll have something to harvest before the first frost. If you want to start a compost pile in midsummer, go for it. Honestly, when to start a compost pile isn't absolutely cut and dried. Starting in fall is recommended so that a good amount of compost is ready by the next planting season. Letting the compost work over the winter can reduce unpleasant odors wafting off the pile. However, a well-constructed and well-maintained compost pile shouldn't give off much odor. Balancing out the pile's ingredients and turning it regularly keeps the composting action going. It takes about three months to get a significant amount of spreadable compost. So, if you want to start composting now, keep in mind that you likely won't be able to use your own compost until next spring. On the plus side, you'll have a good amount to work with. It sounds like you've already staked out your garden and composting areas. But for the benefit of my readers, it's advisable to locate your compost pile at least 20 feet away from the house to prevent pests that burrow into the pile from burrowing into your house. HOME TIP: Many municipal landfills offer sifted compost to residents at little or no cost. Check with your city or town's waste management department to see if they have this program available. Dull Chest Pain Disturbs Sleep
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I'm in my 60s and never had a major illness. I take no medicines. During the past three months, I have been wakened from sleep with a dull pain in the center of my chest. My husband told me to take Mylanta. I did, and got instant relief. What do you think of this pain? -- V.P. ANSWER: Pain that wakens a person from sleep must be taken seriously and ought to be reported to the family doctor. However, the response you got from taking Mylanta (an antacid) makes me think of GERD -- gastroesophageal reflux disease, more commonly known as heartburn. Stomach acid and digestive juices spurt into the esophagus, a structure not equipped to deal with them like the stomach can. If this nighttime pain of yours keeps coming back, put 6-inch blocks under the bedposts at the head of your bed to keep stomach juices in the stomach when you lie down. My first statement about nighttime pain has to be observed. You need to see the family doctor to be certain this is heartburn and not one of the many other serious possibilities. If a brother, sister or parent had pancreatic cancer, the risk of another family member coming down with it increases by 18 times the risk for a person without such a family history. Pancreatic cancer most often appears between the ages of 65 and 84. Aging, smoking and chronic inflammation of the gland are other factors involved in its genesis. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a very active 45-yearold female dance teacher with a surprising white blood count of 2,500. My weight and diet are excellent. I stay away from sugar. I do not feel sick. What can I take to raise my white blood count? -- S. ANSWER: You're the second person in the past three weeks who is concerned about a low white blood count. The normal count is 4,500 to 10,000. The chief role of white blood cells is to battle attacking viruses and bacteria. You have no symptoms from your lower-than-normal count. Your body defenses are in fine shape. Your count might be normal for you. It bears watching. Nothing you take can raise the count. In your case, it doesn't need to be raised.

Hiring Contractor for Home Remodel If a home repair or remodeling project is beyond your abilities and you need to hire a contractor, be cautious. Remodeling and home repair are areas that are ripe for cons and scams, so take appropriate steps to ensure that your project comes out the way you hoped. Before you start, know what you want and what your budget will be. To start the hunt for a contractor, get referrals from friends and family. Conduct phone interviews of each potential contractor and ask if he has worked on projects the size of yours, and whether he will give you a list of current and previous clients. Gather written estimates from three or four of your potential contractors. Know what you want in your project but be willing to listen to ideas. Estimates should include full materials lists (as well as the location where the items will be purchased) and the cost of labor. Have the potential contractor include a proposed payment schedule, and read it carefully. Any contractor who wants half the money up front might have financial problems or will abscond with the money without doing any work. Aim for no more than 10 percent up front, with other payments made at points of completion through the project, with approximately 20 percent held until the project is finished and approved. Toss out any estimates that are extremely low. Contact the local Better Business Bureau to ask about any complaints on the contractors on your list. Also call the consumer protection agency for your state. Contact the clients on the lists you were provided and ask if they were happy with the work. Ask if you can see the projects. Drive by current projects and see how they look. Once you've chosen a contractor, put your deal in writing, including drawings you've made, which the contractor should sign; a copy of the workman's compensation policy and liability insurance; a schedule and a lien statement. The last is important, because you could be stuck with the bill if the contractor doesn't pay off subcontractors and materials suppliers. If you think that all these steps aren't necessary, the Better Business Bureau has issued a report listing the top 10 categories of consumer issues it was called about in 2012. Roofing contractors, general contractors, plumbers, heating and air conditioning, and construction and remodeling services are all in the top 10. Time Savers 1. Use a pizza cutter to quickly cut pancakes, waffles, toast and other soft foods for your preschooler. 2. Cut corn off the cob in seconds by securing one end of the ear of corn in the hole of an angel food cake pan. Slice down with a sharp knife to remove the kernels -- they will fall directly in the pan. This works great for kids who have loose or missing front teeth and can't eat the corn off the cob. 3. When company comes, save clean-up time and protect upholstered dining room chairs from sticky fingers with an attractive slipcover. Sew or pin a 10-inch long piece of ribbon to each corner of a large cloth napkin. Place the napkin on the seat of the chair and tie the ribbons around the chair legs. When the meal is over, remove the napkin, launder and save for the next occasion. To protect the backs of chairs, slip a plain pillowcase over the top. Fun and Games 4. Make picking up small toys easier and faster by scooping up building blocks and small figures with a clean dustpan. 5. To help kids hold playing cards without dropping them, make a cardholder from two plastic deli or margarine tub lids and a brass paper fastener. Put the lids together, smooth sides facing each other, poke a hole through the center and connect in the middle with the paper fastener. Or staple the lids together at the center, but cover the staple with stickers or tape so it won't catch on fingers. Insert the playing cards between the two lids. 6. Use empty, plastic two-liter beverage bottles and sponge balls for an impromptu bat and ball for preschoolers. 7. TRILOGY Polynesian Drumsticks
A quick marinade adds a sweet and tangy glaze to grilled skinless drumsticks -- a favorite with everyone in the family. 1 can (8 ounces) crushed pineapple in unsweetened pineapple juice 1/4 cup (packed) brown sugar 3 tablespoons soy sauce 1 tablespoon (grated) fresh ginger, peeled 1 clove garlic, crushed with press 12 (about 4 pounds) chicken drumsticks, skin removed 1. In blender, puree pineapple with its juice and remaining ingredients except drumsticks. Spoon 1/2 cup pineapple mixture into large self-sealing plastic bag; reserve remaining pineapple mixture for grilling.
Add drumsticks to bag, turning to coat. Let stand at room temperature 15 minutes. 2. Remove drumsticks from bag; discard bag with marinade. Place drumsticks on grill over medium heat and cook 15 minutes, turning over once. Cook drumsticks 10 to 15 minutes longer, or until drumsticks are golden and juices run clear when thickest part is pierced with tip of knife, brushing twice with reserved pineapple mixture and turning occasionally. Serves 4. ● Each serving: About 260 calories, 8g total fat (2g saturated), 123mg cholesterol, 385mg sodium, 8g total carbs, 0g dietary fiber, 38g protein. Housing Vouchers for Homeless Vets Nine thousand veterans are going to receive vouchers for permanent housing. A joint effort between Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Department of Veterans Affairs will spend $60 million at public-housing agencies across the country to provide Section 8 housing for veterans. Called HUD-VASH, for HUD Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing, the program not only provides most of the cost of rentals, but also case management and services from nearby VA medical centers. Many homeless veterans suffer from chronic disabling conditions, such as mental health or substance abuse disorders, or physical disabilities. Veterans who are accepted into the program are expected to participate in case management, treatment recommendations and assistance for recovery. Some specifics: --Veterans in the program won't pay any more than 30 percent of their income for rent. --Both single veterans and those with families are eligible for housing. --Veterans must be able to complete daily living activities and live independently in the community, with the support services and case management. The VA is making headway in tackling homelessness, with the goal of putting an end to veteran homelessness by 2015. Statistics show a 17 percent decline since 2009. So far, it's put 42,557 formerly homeless veterans into housing through the VASH program. More funds will be announced this summer. If you're a homeless veteran, or know of one, find out if you qualify for the housing assistance program by contacting the VA's National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at 1-877-4AID-VET (1-877-424-3838). You might be referred to the point person for the homeless program at the closest VA facility. If you're also unemployed, ask about the Homeless Veteran Supported Employment Program for job development and vocational assistance.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released a special report on seniors and the heat. It has suggestions that make sense -- especially since we seniors are slower to sense changes in temperature. That means we can become overheated before we realize it. Here are some suggestions: --Drink more water than usual, and don't wait until you're actually thirsty before having a drink. By then you're actually overdue for water. Call your doctor's nurse to ask how much water you should be drinking, and make a chart to be sure you get as much as you should. --Don't cook with the stove or oven. It makes the house hotter. --Wear light-colored, lightweight, loose clothing. --Cool down with cool showers or baths. --Avoid alcohol or drinks with lots of sugar. --Check the news for heat alerts. In some cases, cooling stations might be opened in your area, such as in schools. Or call the health department and ask if there are air-conditioned shelters near you.
