TIDBITS® PAYS TRIBUTE TO DR. SEUSS by Kathy Wolfe

March 2 has been designated Dr. Seuss Day in honor of the birthday of one of the world’s most beloved children’s authors. • Dr. Seuss was born Theodor Seuss Geisel in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1904. Seuss, a name with Bavarian roots, was his mother’s maiden name and was pronounced “Zoice,” (rhyming with “rejoice”), not “Soose,” the Anglicized pronunciation. • As a senior at Dartmouth College, Ted Geisel was the editor of “Jack-O-Lantern,” the college’s humor magazine, a medium he used to publish his cartoons. Prohibition was in full swing in 1925, and when Geisel and nine of his friends were caught drinking gin in his room, all the young men were put on probation. Geisel lost his position as editor of the magazine, but continued to publish his cartoons under several aliases, including T. Seuss. • Geisel continued his education at Oxford University, studying English literature. Although he got close to earning a doctorate, he dropped out to travel around Europe. • Because his father had always wanted him to be a doctor, Giesel added the “Dr.” to his pen name. turn the page for more!

DR. SEUSS (continued): • Geisel returned to the United States to pursue a career as an illustrator and cartoonist for several notable publications, including Vanity Fair and Life. The Saturday Evening Post was the first to publish one of his cartoons in their July, 1927 issue. Geisel received $25 for the cartoon, which prompted him to make the move to New York City. • Geisel branched out into advertising campaigns, and created an extremely successful campaign for a popular insecticide called Flit. The slogan “Quick, Henry, the Flit!” became the trendy catchphrase of the day. • While Geisel and his wife were aboard a ship crossing the Atlantic in 1936, he passed the time by putting words to the rhythms of the ship’s engines. The result was Dr. Seuss’ first children’s book And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street. It was the story of a boy named Marco, who imagines a procession of fantasy creatures as he travels along Mulberry Street. Although all Marco really saw was an old horse pulling a wagon, he spins a tale of whizzleworps and cholmondelets. The real Mulberry Street is less than a mile from Geisel’s boyhood home in Springfield, Massachusetts. The book was rejected 27 times before fate finally stepped in. Geisel was walking down the street and bumped into a friend who had just landed a job as an editor in the children’s section at Vanguard Press. Geisel told the friend he had given up and planned to destroy the book. The friend asked to have a look, and Vanguard published the book in 1937, when Dr. Seuss was 33.

Kitten’s Sudden Illness Has Owner on Guilt Trip

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We had a very scary weekend when our new kitten, “Maxie,” who is about 12 weeks old, curled up on his bed and wouldn’t wake up. I rushed him to the veterinarian, where he was given fluids but took several hours to come around. He stayed lethargic for the next couple of days. I feel terrible that he got so ill with a respiratory infection, and that I didn’t notice anything wrong. What signs should I have looked for that might have kept him from getting so ill? -- Doreen in Wheeling, West Virginia DEAR DOREEN: Observant owners often can spot when things aren’t quite right with their kittens and adult cats, but sometimes illness strikes seemingly without warning. Kittens can become ill very quickly; Maxie may have begun showing symptoms during the night, when you were asleep

and couldn’t observe him. And often, cats reveal few to no symptoms at all. They’ll frequently try to hide symptoms of illness -- an instinct for selfpreservation. Subtle signs that things aren’t right include your cat hiding away and not wanting to come out; reduced appetite; lack of interest in toys and things that used to stimulate him; and physical signs like slower response or trouble walking. Vomiting or diarrhea are major warning signs, of course. Today, put aside any guilt at not catching Maxie’s illness sooner -- that may not have been an option -- and instead focus on helping him recover. Follow the vet’s instructions on giving him medicine, what to feed him and when, and make sure his bedding is clean and warm (a heating pad underneath can be a big help). Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@ pawscorner.com. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

DR. SEUSS (continued): Dr. Seuss’ second book, The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins, was published in 1938, followed by The King’s Stilts in 1939 and Horton Hatches the Egg in 1940. When World War II broke out, Ted Geisel supported the effort by designing posters for the Treasury Department and War Production Board. He became an Army captain in 1943, overseeing the Animation Department of the First Motion Picture Unit, creating training films, one of which was awarded the 1947 Academy Award for Documentary Feature. After the war, Geisel returned to advertising, which was his main source of income, although he continued to publish children’s books, including If I Ran the Zoo in 1950 and Horton Hears a Who in 1954. His big breakthrough came in 1957 with The Cat in the Hat, Dr. Seuss’ 13th book. During World War II, Dr. Seuss had worked with William Spaulding, who went on to become director of the education division at Houghton Mifflin publishers. Spaulding, concerned that children were not learning to read, approached Seuss, with a list of 348 words that he felt were important for firstgraders to know. Spaulding asked for a book containing 250 of those words, and only those words, a book “children can’t put down.” Nine months later, Seuss presented him with The Cat in the Hat, using 236 words from the list. The book was an immediate success, selling nearly a million copies by the end of 1960. How the Grinch Stole Christmas was also published in 1957, and in 1958, The Cat in the Hat Comes Back! Seuss’ success led him to found Beginner Books, a division of Random House, books designed to help children learn to read.

Tidbits® Full of Fun, Facts & Trivia! Clothes Sprinklers Q: In my mom’s laundry room I found two clothes sprinklers that I remember her using when I was a child. One is a ceramic Dutch boy that fits on a soda pop bottle filled with water. Is it worth keeping? -- Barbara, Pine Bluff, Arkansas A: Before steam irons, clothes requiring ironing had to be manually dampened with water. Sprinklers came in many designs. For example, I have seen ones featuring cats, dogs, a rooster and even a monkey. Typical prices for some of the more unusual ones are: elephant with shamrock on tummy, $150; an extremely rare Dachshund, $500; Mary Poppins, $100; and “Dearie is Weary” in yellow dress, $350. Even common ones generally sell in the $10 to $25 range, so the answer to your question is yes, your sprinklers are worth keeping. *** Q: My family collects almost everything imaginable. Several years ago, we started picking up matchbooks when we found them in hotels, bars and restaurants. Since there were five of us looking, we soon discovered we had gathered more than 4,000 different ones. I would like to continue this hobby and need your advice. Is there a club for collectors and a basic reference book? --Lynne, Gainesville, Florida A: One of the largest groups is the Rathkamp

Matchbook Society with chapters throughout the country. For information, contact Linda Wolfe, 13 Creekstone Drive, Mont Alto, PA 17237. There are several reference books available. My personal favorite is “The Matchcover Collector’s Price Guide” by Bill Retskin and published by Antique Trader Books. This comprehensive guide features more than 10,000 matchcover descriptions and estimated values in over 150 categories. I am certain that when the first matchcover was created in 1889, few realized it would it become one of the premiere advertising vehicles of the 20th century. Matchbooks have become an important American collectible as well. *** Q: I have a cast-iron cooking utensil and a child’s tin watering pail. Do you think these items have any value? -- Mitchell, Monroe, Louisiana A: I carefully examined the photos you sent and have come to the conclusion that your items are fairly common and worth only two or three dollars each. * It was world-renowned American photographer Ansel Adams who made the following sage observation: “It is horrifying that we have to fight our own government to save the environment.” * You might be surprised to learn that the blood of a grasshopper is white. * Tacumbu prison in Asuncion, Paraguay, is notorious for its overcrowded conditions: 3,500 inmates are crowded into a space designed for half that number, and many of them sleep on cardboard directly on the floor. One inmate, however, until recently enjoyed amenities that many outside the prison walls would love to have. Drug trafficker Chimenes Pavao bribed officials to look the other way, then set up a fully furnished, tastefully decorated threeroom suite, complete with air conditioning, a refrigerator, a library, a flat-screen TV, a DVD player and a treadmill. The luxury cell was discovered when a bomb threat caused \police to search the entire prison. * If you’ve ever been the victim of a pursesnatching, here’s a discouraging bit of information: Those who study such things say that four out of five perpetrators get away. * In 1804 our planet hit a milestone: a population of 1 billion people. It took 123 years to add another billion, then only 33 more to get to 3 billion, in 1960. We crossed the 4 billion mark in 1974, hit 5 billion in 1987, and got to 6 billion in 1999. In 2011 (or early 2012, depending on who’s doing the estimating, the earth’s population passed 7 billion, and those who study such things expect us to get to 8 billion sometime in the mid- to late 2020s. *** Thought for the Day: “Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.” -- Benjamin Franklin (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

For Advertising Call or Text 740-441-7633 DR. SEUSS (continued): • Fellow publisher Bennett Cerf bet Seuss that he could not write a book using 50 words or less. This challenge resulted in 1960’s Green Eggs and Ham, Seuss’ best-selling title and the fourth best-selling children’s book of all time. The text does in fact consist of just 50 different words. • Dr. Seuss wrote and illustrated 44 books, of which 40 are in rhyme. Twenty-two other books were illustrated by others, co-authored by Seuss, written under another name, or published after his death. Of the total of 66 books, only five are not written in rhyme. For the 10 books that Geisel wrote and others illustrated, he used the pen name Theo LeSieg, which is Geisel spelled backwards. These include Ten Apples Up on Top, I Wish That I Had Duck Feet, and The Tooth Book. • Although Dr. Seuss married twice, he had no children of his own. He did have two stepdaughters with his second wife. When he was frequently asked how he could write so well for children, his reply was, “You have ‘em, I’ll entertain ‘em.” It’s ironic that he wrote his first children’s book in the same year that his first wife learned that she could not have children. • Dr. Seuss’ books have sold more than 600 million copies and have been translated into 20 languages. • Of all the characters invented by Seuss, he said the one that was most based on himself was the Grinch. He once described himself as a “nasty anti-Christmas character,” and wrote the story to see if he “could rediscover something about Christmas” that he’d lost. • Dr. Seuss final book was Oh, the Places You’ll Go!, written in 1990, the year before he died. It has become a favorite gift for graduates with its wisdom, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.”

UNUSUAL PLANTS: CORPSE FLOWER Ew, what’s that stench? If that beautiful flower smells disgusting, it just might be a corpse flower. Read along and discover the facts on this unusual plant. • Found in the humid rainforests of Sumatra, the corpse flower is the world’s largest flowering plant, reaching heights of 10 to 15 feet (3 to 4.6 m), and blossoms up to 6 feet (1.83 m) wide, although the record-holding flower reached over 10 feet (3 m). It was first discovered in Sumatra in 1878 by an Italian botanist. Although it is cultivated at many arboretums worldwide, it grows wild in Asia’s tropical regions. • The corpse flower is an inflorescence, meaning that a cluster of flowers is arranged on one stem. A leafy sheath known as a spathe, and resembling a large petal, encloses the flower cluster. Irises and crocuses have the same construction. The corpse flower’s stem alone weighs about 110 lbs. (50 kg). • The large dark burgundy red flower of the corpse plant might lead you sample its scent. However, it emits a very strong displeasing odor similar to rotting meat or a decaying corpse beginning about 12 hours before it blooms. • It requires seven to ten years of growth before the corpse flower can bloom, and they usually bloom only once every few decades and remain open for just 24 to 48 hours. Because of this, nurseries and arboretums around the world schedule special events in conjunction with the blooming, gathering large crowds of visitors. • The bloom usually opens between midafternoon and late evening and remains open all night. After 12 hours, it already begins to wilt. The scent will linger another 12 hours afterwards.

For Advertising Call or Text 740-441-7633 CORPSE FLOWER (continued): • So why does this unusual plant smell like rotting flesh? The corpse flower has both male and female flowers, yet they are unable to pollinate. This means they must attract pollinators in order to safeguard the continuation of the species. Carnivorous insects, such as dung beetles and flesh flies, feed on dead flesh. In order to draw these pollinators in, the flower is a dark burgundy color with a pungent odor that imitates a dead animal. The female flower opens first, then a day or two later, the male flower opens, thus preventing the flower from self-pollinating. • These flowers also have the unusual ability to warm up to 98 degrees F (36.7 C), which further boosts the odor and fools the insects into believing the flower is food. The spiked center part of the flower is covered with a large quantity of pollen. The bugs fly inside, then realize there is nothing to eat. They fly away, but their legs are covered with pollen that ensures pollination of the stinky plant. When the pollination is complete, the flower collapses. • What gives this rare flower its powerful stench? Several chemicals are released by the plant, including dimethyl trisulfide, the same chemical emitted by limburger cheese, and trimethylamine, also found in rotting fish and ammonia. The isovaleric acid found in the corpse flower is the same as that which causes sweaty socks to stink, as well as indole, a chemical that lends its aroma to human feces. Mixed in with these foul-smelling aromas is benzyl alcohol, a sweet floral scent that can be found in jasmine and hyacinth.

PANCAKES

Happy Pancake Week! In conjunction with Shrove Tuesday, February 28, Tidbits is flipping over this breakfast food! • International Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday takes place 47 days before Easter Sunday. Due to the variation of Easter’s date based on the cycles of the moon, Pancake Day can occur anytime between February 3 and March 9. It falls one day before Ash Wednesday, which is the first day of Lent. Over 1,000 years ago, the tradition of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday began. It was a way of eating up all leftover fatty, rich, perishable foods before the fasting period of the Lenten season began. The term “Mardi Gras” is French for “Fat Tuesday.” • The word “shrove” is the past tense of “shrive,” which translates “absolve” or “confess.” Therefore, many Christians use the day as a day of self-examination, reflecting on any wrongs from which they need to repent. • Pancakes have been around for thousands of years, with the earliest known made from ground grains and nuts, mixed with water or milk and cooked on hot stones. The first pancake recipe similar to what we know today appeared in an English cookbook in the 15th century. Citizens of Buckinghamshire, England were the first to celebrate Pancake Day in 1445. • According to French legend, if you hold a coin in one hand while flipping a pancake with other one, you can make a wish come true. • Although pancake batter is frequently made with milk (along with flour, sugar, butter, and eggs), those pancakes made with buttermilk are softer and fluffier. Before we had baking soda, cooks used fresh snow because it contained ammonia,

which made the cakes fluffier.

PANCAKES (continued):

• How about some record holders in the pancake department? The world’s largest pancake to date was made in Manchester, England, in 1994. It measured 49 ft., 3 in. (15.01 m) in diameter and was 1 inch (2.5 cm) thick. Calorie count for the massive cake was estimated at 2 million. The fastest pancake flipper is an Australian chef, who flipped 140 in 60 seconds in 2012. The highest pancake flip occurred in Cheektowaga, New York, in 2010 when the cake’s flip was measured at 31 ft., 1 in. (9.47) meters. The longest continuing pancake flipping in a frying pan occurred in Niagara Falls in 1999, when Mike Cuzzacrea flipped cakes non-stop for 3 hours, 2 minutes, and 27 seconds. And the record for the most pancakes made in one hour by an individual was set in Washington state in 2013, when a restaurant made 1,092 pancakes in 60 minutes. • The earliest written record of the use of the expression “as flat as a pancake” is from 1611 according to the Oxford English Dictionary. • Aunt Jemima pancake flour was the first ready-mix food available on the grocer’s shelves. It was invented in Missouri and made its debut in 1889. • The first International House of Pancakes, or IHOP as we call them, opened in Toluca Lake, California in 1958. Today there are more than 1600 locations. • What do you call your pancakes? Hotcakes, griddlecakes, flapjacks? The French call them “panne-quaiques” (what we know as crepes), while the Dutch say “pannenkoekento,” and the Austrians, “Palatschinken.”

By Keith Roach, M. D,

‘I Took an Aspirin!’

DEAR DR. ROACH: I took an aspirin for a seeming heart attack and went to the hospital, where I was asked if I had taken any meds. I answered “no,” and was medicated; the result was panic for the doctors, as my heart rate slowed to a dangerous rate. With care and an extra day in the hospital, I was released. My ignorance about medicines was scary. I think that it should be emphasized that “meds” does not mean only prescriptions. Tell the doctor, “I took an aspirin!” -- R.G. ANSWER: Indeed, your doctors should know about all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter, vitamins and other supplements. Sometimes women forget to mention their oral contraceptives. Aspirin is a powerful medicine, not to be taken lightly. That being said, I am not sure why your heart rate slowed to a dangerous rate. Beta blockers usually are given for suspected heart attack, and some people do have dramatic responses to beta blockers, and their heart rates slow way down. I can’t explain why aspirin could have made that more likely, since aspirin shouldn’t slow down the heart rate. I also couldn’t find any interaction between beta blockers and aspirin. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 78-year-old female who has had three orthopedic surgeries (hip repair, hip replacement and knee replacement) with spinal anesthesia in two years. Each time, the anesthesia has left me with severe orthostatic hypotension requiring medication for months. If I should ever need surgery again, is there any other anesthetic that would be just as effective and not make me ill? -- A.P. ANSWER: This actually is a very common problem, with at least half of people undergoing orthopedic surgery having some orthostatic hypotension (a lowering of blood pressure upon sitting or standing) immediately after surgery. You have had a very prolonged reaction. I spoke with an anesthesiologist at the Cleveland Clinic, who told me that the issue could have been any of the anesthetic and adjuvant agents that were used. He recommended more salt and water before any operation and longer time in progressively upright positions before trying to get up post-operatively. Finally, your next anesthesiologist could look at your preoperative and anesthesia records and try to figure out what agent you had that was most likely to have been causing this, so to avoid its use next time. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Two lab tests done in the past two years show that my kidneys are not functioning at 100 percent. Is there any action I can take (such as diet or medication) to keep these figures from worsening? -- L.M. ANSWER: Kidney function tends to decrease with age, but kidneys also can be damaged from high blood pressure, diabetes, some medications and many other causes. If kidney function is low, your doctor should look at your prescription medication and carefully evaluate their dosing. Also, anti-inflammatory medicines like ibuprofen or naproxen should be minimized. Even Tylenol can cause long-term kidney damage in high doses for long periods of time. Managing any chronic illnesses and avoiding toxic drugs are the most important actions. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. * “Save the plastic cups that yogurt or fruit comes in. You can reuse them for Jell-O cups. Cover with a piece of plastic wrap, and secure tightly with a rubber band.” -- E.D. in Kansas * Start seeds in the cups of an egg carton, the kind that are made from paper. You can get them going on a windowsill inside. When it’s time to plant in the ground, score the bottom of each cup and plant it -- paper and all -- in the dirt. * “I found a decorative cardboard box that is big enough to hold a power strip. After installing it in the box so it looks pretty, I made holes out the side for different kinds of chargers (Apple, Android, etc.). The cord can be stored in the box or pulled out enough to charge a device. It looks nice on the side table instead of a mess of cords.” -W.L. in Alabama * “Cheese can be grated, then frozen. The frozen cheese can be used in casserole dishes without even defrosting. I find it convenient to freeze my mozzarella in batches because we make a lot of individual pizzas. I can get a big block, grate it and freeze. It keeps for a long time.” -- J.M. in Pennsylvania * Lipstick and lip gloss (including lip balms) shouldn’t be kept for more than a year. You can extend the life of your favorite lip wear by shaving a bit off and using a brush to apply it from the cut-off portion. If it touches your face, it can collect and breed bacteria. Be sure to replace mascaras every six months at minimum, and clean brushes regularly. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

A Leader Among Men There are times when you meet a guy and just instantly like him. It’s part instinct, part intuition. Your bloodline has survived long enough to see you into the world; while you’re in it, you tend to gravitate to the people who will make living in it a little more comfortable. Kevin Plank, the founder and CEO of Under Armour is just such a man. I know. He played softball for me. Let me explain. I attended the University of Maryland, and first met Kevin Plank at the world-famous Bentley’s on College Park’s Route 1. A childhood friend was dating a guy who lived with Plank, and when his house had a vacancy, at her urging, he vetted me at Bentley’s. Plank looked like a guy’s guy -- not a pretty boy, definitely a tough guy, smiled a lot, engaging, strong handshake ... emanated a sort of uncommon stature. Plank was unlike any college kid I had ever met, and living in his house with a motley crew of ACC wrestlers, football players, a baseball player (me), hockey player and potato chip-salesman’s son, plus the women who loved us -- all of us had girlfriends, so we were kept well in check -was as great an experience as I’ve ever had. But it’s also where I had the privilege of witnessing Plank in action as a businessman. My first night living there, Plank grilled me about the Grateful Dead. He had heard there was a marketplace in the parking lots, and I, no stranger to the scene, explained it to him in great detail. Within a few days of the show, hundreds of T-shirts were delivered to our house, assembled accorded to size and sold at the next few Dead shows by Plank and his team. Before Valentine’s Day, he was the guy who drove to the docks of Baltimore and negotiated for a huge shipment of roses for pennies on the dollar. He came back to College Park, built a call-center in our living room (beer on tap), and hired us to take orders after he had plastered the campus with fliers touting $19 roses by the dozen. The guy was 21. He invented Under Armour out of necessity. He was a stocky, Irish kid who played football very hard, and he sweated a lot ... an awful lot. I think one day he weighed the T-shirt under his pads, and it contained about 11 pounds of water weight. That led him to invent Under Armour, and his salesmanship after graduation took him over the top. Ever since, he has done nothing but champion the American worker and add a great deal of excitement to the world of sports. But when he expressed enthusiasm for our president’s economic agenda, a bunch of people did the mindless #hashtag thing and tried to create uproar. This, to a guy that has done everything he can to return jobs to Baltimore, to keep his company as American as ever ... a guy who consistently gives back to his community, a guy that shakes your hand and means what he says. Bashing Kevin Plank? Not on my watch. Plank said he wants to create jobs and thinks Trump can help. Personally, I can’t wait for the day he runs for president. Protect our house, Kevin. You always have. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Yes, You Need a Hobby Hobbies can help keep us physically and mentally fit, and there are plenty of them to choose from. If you’ve recently retired, you might not even know where to begin. Here are some ideas to get you started. For the physically active, explore outdoor photography, yoga, woodworking, metal detecting, ballroom dance, golf or indoor swimming at the Y. While you’re there, check out the Y’s offering of fitness classes for seniors. For those who’d rather sit at a table or computer, those boxes of memorabilia will give you plenty of items to begin your own scrapbook. (Add stories and poetry, or photos to pass down to the next family generations.) Try online chess or other games for brain stretching. Start a collection, or expand one you dabbled at before, such as coins or stamps. Consider ham radio, and talk to the world. Even if you don’t think you can paint or draw, taking a class will give you a start. (Remember that Georgia O’Keeffe painted into her 90s.) Writing a daily or weekly blog post on an online forum of your own can give you a voice to express your opinions. Stories, poetry or even a novel are at your fingertips. Take a computer class that will teach you how to create and save files, if that’s where you need to begin. Still don’t know where to start? Make a list of things that interest you and expand from there. If you’re good at sewing or painting, see if your skills are needed by the local theater group. If a line-dance class sounds good, try that. If you’ve going to travel, take a foreign-language class. Bonus: You don’t have to limit yourself to one hobby. For the most fun, combine active and sitting activities. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Not at These Cemeteries

The Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration earned high marks in a recent survey of customer satisfaction, but on the state level, it’s another story. The VA cemetery in Exeter, Rhode Island, under the control of the Department of Human Services, incorrectly laid out a row of graves in 2010, and since then seven veterans were interred in the wrong place. Even when the permanent grave markers were installed, the problem wasn’t noticed and markers were put in the wrong place on 21 graves. The mistake wasn’t found until recently, when cemetery workers tried to make space for a veteran’s wife, and there was no room in the grave. Can you imagine? You visit the burial site of your loved one and later learn you were in the wrong place, year after year? There apparently were no procedures in place to prevent this kind of mistake, but there will be now. A second person will need to verify that the remains are in the correct place. It wasn’t the first mistake of this kind at the Rhode Island cemetery. One woman inquired about why the ground at her mother’s grave wasn’t freshly turned. It was discovered that the woman, the wife of a former state senator, had been buried a few rows down and a few spaces over, instead of with her husband. Explanation: human error. This is the same cemetery where piles of U.S. flags were discovered last year dumped like so much garbage, found and photographed by a son who came to pay his respects at his father’s grave. It’s hard to pick out which veterans cemetery is the worst, but this one is right up there: In Texas, a veteran’s grave marker left off his middle name. The replacement marker had the word “united” misspelled, as in Uinted States of America. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
