TIDBITS® PLAYS WITH BARBIE DOLLS

TROYER METAL

Roofing & Siding

by Janet Spencer

Every single second, three Barbie dolls are sold around the world. Come along with Tidbits as we play with Barbie dolls! A SUCCESS STORY • According to the book “Forever Barbie” by M. G. Lord, Ruth Handler was the one who came up with the idea for the Barbie doll after seeing a German doll named Lilli that was anatomically correct and intended to be given as a gag gift to bachelors. Her husband Elliot was already in the manufacturing business. Ruth asked him to start making adult-looking dolls for their daughter, who was too old for baby dolls but not too old for dolls altogether. Elliot began manufacturing the doll. • The doll was named after the Handler’s daughter, Barbie, who was born in 1941. Their son Ken was born in 1944. The factory foreman’s name was Harold Matson. Matson and Elliot combined their names to form the Mattel Corporation. • In 1955 Mattel was already well established in the toy business when they got the opportunity to sponsor a new TV show: “The Mickey Mouse Club.” As a result, Mattel’s ads turned toy sales from a once-a-year occurrence at Christmastime to a year-round event. Barbie went on the market in 1959. (continued next page)

WHOLESALE APPLIANCE

Published Weekly by MASSie Publishing

BARBIE’S BUDDIES • Barbie was the only adult female doll on the market until Mattel introduced her best friend Midge. Midge was less glamorous than Barbie, while still being perky. Later Midge got a boyfriend, Alan, and Barbie got a little sister, Skipper. • One model of Skipper had budding breasts that would sprout when her arms were shoved backwards. Twist her arms once again and she was flat-chested once more. • The Skipper doll came with her own miniature Barbie doll just over an inch tall with a paintedon swimsuit and yellow hair. • Mattel was originally against the idea of producing a Ken doll because male dolls had never sold well. The Ken was finally released in 1961. It was a success because little girls knew that Barbie needed a boyfriend. • Barbie’s cousin Francie appeared in 1966, followed by her black friends Christie and Julia. To make the afro hair look real, the doll’s heads were stuck in an oven and heated, making the hair crinkle up. Jamaican Barbie and Nigerian Barbie followed at later dates. • Talking Stacey, Barbie’s English friend, was released in 1969. • When the question arose of whether Barbie should have a baby, the problem was solved by issuing a Barbie doll that came with an infant and an apron with “Babysitter” clearly written on it. • In 1993 Mattel came out with an “Earring Magic Ken” complete with single earring, purple vest, and necklace. IT’S A FACT • Ruth Handler at first decided not to make a doll-sized vacuum cleaner for Barbie because she didn’t feel Barbie should be thought of as someone who would do “rough housework.” (Continued next page)

Dog’s Nose-Licking Is a Common Problem

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: After my dog “Twitch” got out of the yard a couple of months ago, he came back with a big scratch on the tip of his nose. Since then every time it scabs over and starts to heal, he licks it with his tongue (it just reaches) and opens it up again. It isn’t infected, but it won’t heal and looks awful. What can I do to stop him from licking his nose? -Wendy, via email DEAR WENDY: The tip of the nose is a tough spot to have a scratch when you’re a dog. The skin is somewhat thin, and the wound itches as it heals, and what dog can resist licking that itchy spot? Even though the wound isn’t infected, you should consult the vet, even if it’s just a phone call. He or she may recommend a specific medication -- say, a nasty-tasting antibiotic

cream -- or have other advice that can help. Many pet owners say they’ve had some success with dabbing a triple antibiotic ointment on the sore spot twice a day, and distracting their dog for a few minutes with a treat or playing with them. A few owners recommended placing a muzzle (or a comfortable cloth muzzle) on a dog for short periods to give any medicine being used time to sink in. If you go this route, be sure to supervise Twitch the entire time, give him lots of praise and a treat before and after putting the muzzle on. Nose wounds that won’t heal can be troublesome, but keep looking for ways to treat the scratch that will reduce Twitch’s urge to lick at the spot. Send your tips or questions to ask@ pawscorner.com. Online at www.lovemytidbits.com EVOLUTION OF A DOLL • In 1967 Barbie acquired eyelashes and a twisting waist. Any girls who had an old Barbie were encouraged to trade it in for a discount on a new one. Each year afterwards a new version was released that would do something the previous dolls did not: tilt the head, kiss, blink eyes, grip objects, etc. This ensured continuing sales. • Until 1971, Barbie’s gaze was downcast to one side— a very submissive look. In 1971 she was given a direct straight-ahead look as the women’s liberation movement gathered force. • Jack Ryan, who was married for a short time to Zsa Zsa Gabor, invented the joints that allowed Barbie to bend at the waist and the knee. Ryan made a fortune on his patents. • In 1966 “Color Magic” Barbie was on the market. Her hair and clothes changed color when a “magic” potion was applied. • In 1977 an 18-inch tall Barbie was introduced. She came with a pink Corvette, a motorhome, and a beauty boutique. • In 1979 Barbie got a Fur and Jewels Safe that came complete with a security alarm. • In 1981 Barbie developed tan lines. • Even though Black Barbie and Hispanic Barbie came out in 1980, Blond Barbie outsells all other dolls even in Latin America. • In 1992 the expensive Empress Bride Barbie collector’s doll had a dress created by worldfamous dress designer Bob Mackie. • Barbie’s waist is so narrow not to fit some impossible male ideal, but because when you make a doll-sized waist-band out of cloth, the folds of cloth are so bulky and cumbersome that it would make all but the most slender doll look fat. • Today Mattel is one of the biggest apparel manufacturers in the world due to Barbie’s expanding wardrobe, with over 100 new additions annually. Tidbits® Full of Fun, Facts & Trivia! Snappy Magazines Q: While going through a family storage area, I found about two dozen issues of Snappy Magazine from 1930 and 1931. Since they were tied up with string and labeled “smut,” I was naturally interested. What can you tell me about them? -- Steve, Metarie, Louisiana A: Your magazines were part of GlemArt, which also included Gay Parisienne and Paris Nights. Not exactly smut by today’s standards (or lack thereof), the issues often included pinup illustrations, occasional nude art images and suggestive stories. Look for contributions by Octavus Ray Cohen, Achmed Abdullah (Michael Romanoff), and Jack Woodford, since they are especially collectible. According to “Vintage Magazines Price Guide,” by Richard Russell and Elaine Gross Russell and published by Krause Books, most issues of Snappy magazine are valued in the $30-$85 range, but there are exceptions. Due to content, May 1931 and May 1933 issues are worth about $125 each; April 1933, $100; and June 1934, $150. According to these prices, your stack of Snappy publications -- if in good condition and complete -- could easily be worth several thousand dollars. *** Q: I have an old 78-rpm recording of “Long

Ago and Far Away” by Dick Haymes and Helen Forrest. I believe it is from World War II. What is it worth? -- Billy, Rio Rancho, New Mexico A: Your recording -- Decca 23317 -- was issued in April 1944 and spent 18 weeks on the nation’s bestsellers chart. At one point, it was the No. 1 recording in sales in the country. It was introduced in the film, “Cover Girl,” featuring Betty Grable. Hubba Hubba. Your disc is worth about $5 in excellent condition. *** Q: I inherited a small bowl, which my late grandma told me was hobnail glass. What exactly is hobnail glass? -- Martha, Postsmouth, Virginia A: Hobnail glass is a pattern on pressed glass that has raised bumps as part of its distinctive design. Dozens of hobnail patterns and variants have been made in a wide variety of colors. This type of glass was perfected in 1886 by William Leighton Jr. and William F. Russell of Hobbs, Brockunier & Company. Incidentally, one of the earliest names for this glass pattern was dewdrop. * If you’re like 10 to 20 percent of the U.S. population, you suffer from “coulrophobia,” a fear of clowns. * In Linden, California, a man saw a rabbit scurry into an irrigation pipe. Worried about the animal’s safety, he got two other men to help him lift the 44-foot-long pipe and urge the rabbit out. Their kindly behavior wasn’t rewarded, however; while the men were lifting it, the pipe touched a 12,000volt electrical wire, electrocuting all three of the Good Samaritans. * Those who suffer from Moebius syndrome are incapable of showing expressions on their faces -- not a frown or a smile or a quizzical lift of an eyebrow. They often are found sleeping with their eyes open.

The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that ‘my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.’”

Their ads consistently showed boys playing only with educational toys while girls played only with dolls. Later, Mattel couldn’t resist taking a jab at NOW. When they came out against the Miss America pageant in 1972, Mattel promptly came out with a Miss America doll. • In 1992 the talking Barbie got in big trouble with feminists for saying “Math class is tough.” In response to protests, Mattel changed the remark to “Science class is cool.” The controversy of the math class comment received publicity nationwide, and even made the front page of the “Washington Post.” • In December of 1993 talking Barbies appeared in stores— but instead of saying “What should I wear to the prom?” they said, “Eat lead, Cobra!” and “Vengeance is mine!” Meanwhile G.I. Joe dolls showed up that were saying, “Let’s go shopping!” and “Will we ever have enough clothes?” A group called the Barbie Liberation Organization swapped hundreds of Barbie voice boxes with G.I. Joe’s in order to make a point. • If Barbie were life-size, her measurements would be 39-23-33. In retaliation against Barbie’s unrealistic measurements, High Self Esteem Toys came out with a competing doll who was a bit fatter. They claimed Barbie dolls encouraged girls to become anorexic. The press embraced the new doll, but the little girls did not. It was introduced in 1991 and was out of production in 1994. • Barbie’s “Slumber Party” outfit came with a bathroom scale that was permanently fixed at 110 lbs. and a bedtime reading book entitled, “How to Lose Weight” with the advice “Don’t eat!” written on the back. Ken’s bedtime set, by contrast, came with a plastic sweet roll and glass of milk.

• Ostriches are the largest living bird, standing up to 9 feet (2.7 m) tall and weighing as much as 350 lbs. (159 kg). Only the extinct moa of New Zealand was taller (at 10 feet / 3 m) and only the extinct elephant bird of Madagascar was heavier (at 1000 lbs. / 453 kg). • Whereas the ostrich is the largest bird in the world, the bee hummingbird is the smallest. One ostrich weighs as much as 48,000 bee hummingbirds. • Most birds hop when on the ground, but the ostrich has specialized in running. It can run up to 50 mph, (80 kph) which is faster than many birds can fly. The ostrich is capable of taking 15 foot (4.6 m) strides at that pace. • They don’t cheep and chirp like most birds do. They roar loudly with a strange hissing noise mixed in. • A flock of three to five ostrich hens share one rooster as a mate. • All ostrich hens in a flock lay their eggs in a single large nest, which is then protected by the dominant hen. She can only incubate a few dozen eggs at a time. She pushes all the surplus eggs out of the nest, where they perish. However, she never pushes her own eggs out of the nest. Scientists repeatedly marked eggs and rearranged eggs in order to prove that she always pushes other eggs out, but never her own. They theorize that she recognized the tiny pits on the shell of each egg. • Ostrich eggs weigh 3 lbs. (1.3 kg), which was a factor leading to the decimation of their numbers, because the eggs are tasty and very nutritious. The giant eggs are the largest of any living bird, although they are actually the smallest eggs relative to the size of the adult bird. (continued next page)

Great Christmas Gift OSTRICH cont’d at a Great Price! • Ostrich chicks are the size of adult chickens

when they hatch. They can run as fast as the adults by the age of one month. • Ostriches have a strange habit of kidnapping other ostrich chicks and raising them as their own. Any time they have the opportunity, an ostrich will run another ostrich off from the nest, then hustle all the chicks over to its own nest. The brood may be stolen back by the original ostrich, or a third party may make off with the batch. This chick-napping goes on and on until a dominant ostrich is caring for a huge brood of chicks, with its own chicks mixed into the bunch. Scientists theorize they do this in order to provide protection for their own chicks: if a predator kills some chicks, their own offspring are more likely to survive if they are surrounded by other chicks. It’s the “safety in numbers” principle. • The legs of an ostrich can be formidable weapons, capable of killing a human or a lion with a forward kick. Ostriches kick forward rather than backward. An ostrich at a zoo once bent a quarter-inch-thick bar of iron into a right angle with a single kick. • They often travel with other grazing animals, such as zebras or antelopes, because a herd of animals will kick up bugs, rodents, and lizards that the ostriches eat, while the ostriches provide advance warning of approaching predators. • Contrary to popular belief, ostriches do not bury their heads in the sand. When predators approach, they will often lie flat on the ground to become less visible, pressing their heads against the ground. • The ostrich has the largest eye of any land animal, measuring 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter which allows predators to be seen at long distances. • Ostriches can live for 70 years.

• Mafia fugitive Francesco Farina had been wanted by the Sicilian police since 1996. He’d been on the run, fleeing from charges of robbery and drug dealing. When police suspected they had tracked him down to a particular flat in Sicily, they staked the place out with a succession of cops dressed as Santa standing on the street corner outside the building. They arrested Farina shortly before Christmas, 2001, and then turned in their Santa suits. • Just before Christmas, a Reno, Nevada newspaper asked for volunteers to come forward to help in some less-than-scientific experiments to find out how to destroy unwanted fruitcakes. The assembled group then devised a number of methods. They discovered over the course of the day that dropping a fruitcake from a second floor had little impact. One team shot it with a sub-machine gun (submachine guns are legal in Nevada) but also found the fruitcake survived relatively intact. Football player Damon Fine drop-kicked one, with very satisfying explosive results. However, the best method was running over the fruitcake with a truck. • Fundraisers in London raise money for cancer research by hosting the Great Christmas Pudding race each December. The event pits teams of celebrities in fancy dress in a relay race. Each team carries a Christmas pudding on a platter, waiterstyle. The racecourse is full of obstacles. The team that wins is awarded Christmas puddings as a prize. • In December of 2001, over 500 Santas participated in a four-mile (6.4 km) run for charity. The event, held in Wales, was open to both male and female Santas in full costume. Tim Davies, a farmer, was the first male Santa to cross the finish line, with of time of 21 minutes, 16 seconds. Annie Lander was the first female Santa and she ran the course in 26 minutes. (continued)

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com STRANGE CHRISTMAS • In December of 2001, organizers at Guinness World Records sponsored the first ever “Santathon” to find out who the world’s best Santa is. The event, held in England, included a field of eight top contenders in full beards, red suits, and black boots, battling it out for the title. Competitive events included sack-hauling, pie eating, chimney climbing, stocking filling, and ho-ho-hoing. In the end, David BroughtonDavis from Croydon, a professional Santa for Selfridges, (a department store in London) was awarded the title of Britain’s Ultimate Santa. “I just wish that the pie-eating hadn’t taken place before the chimney climb,” he said after being awarded the Golden Boots trophy. • The TeePee Garden Center in Franklin Park, Pennsylvania had a Christmas display set up which included Donner and Blitzen, two tame reindeer rented from a nearby farm. When a gate was left open during feeding time shortly before Christmas, the reindeer wandered away. Donner was captured, but Blitzen ran off. Everyone’s worst fears were realized the next day when a local man grabbed his gun and shot what he thought was a really large deer about a half mile away from the garden center. Law enforcement officials were reluctant to file charges because reindeer are not covered under local hunting regulations. • Dunsley Hall Country House Hotel in England once offered just the thing for people who were sick and tired of Christmas: a 3-night, 4-day “Bah Humbug!” Christmas get-away. For about $500 per person, kill-joys heard carols sung out of tune, ate cold sandwiches for Christmas dinner, received gifts of socks, underwear, ties, and bath salts, threw decorations into a bonfire, and joined in a toast to Ebenezer Scrooge. “Some people just want to get away from the normal festivities and don’t feel like celebrating Christmas,” said a spokeswoman for the hotel.

By Keith Roach, M. D, Few Children Outgrow Tree-Nut Allergy DEAR DR. ROACH: Can you tell me if there is any hope of a cure for tree-nut allergy, particularly for a child? -- X.M. ANSWER: Tree-nut allergies, like all allergies, vary in severity from mild to life-threatening. Allergies to tree nuts (these include walnuts, cashews, almonds and others) are common, are more likely to be severe, and tend to persist throughout lifetime. People with one tree-nut allergy may have others, and about 30 percent to 40 percent also may be allergic to peanuts (despite their being legumes, they share enough characteristics for co-allergic reactions). Peanut and tree-nut allergies appear to be increasing in prevalence over time. The mainstay of treatment is avoiding the allergen, which requires constant vigilance, careful reading of nutritional labels and a plan for treatment in case of ingestion, such as an epinephrine auto-injector. Only about 15 to 20 percent of younger children will develop tolerance to (“outgrow”) their allergy; an allergy that develops later in life usually is lifelong. Your allergist can do skin testing to see if the allergy is resolving. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a retired ob-gyn and am married to a practicing MD. I’m writing you today about autism and its use as a diagnosis. My view is that each individual is unique, mentally and physically. While autism may be one way to describe a personality, each person must deal with the world on its terms, not because of a diagnosis. I personally believe I am a variant of Asperger’s, but who knows? I don’t qualify as an Asperger’s if given a test prepared by psychologists/psychiatrists. Yet, I have had many life experiences that are best explained by an Asperger’s diagnosis. What are your thoughts on Asperger’s syndrome? -- A.G. ANSWER: Since I recently published a letter by an adult who believed he was autistic despite never having received a diagnosis, I have had several letters like this. Autism, including its variant Asperger syndrome, is a spectrum of illnesses that share deficits in social interaction, communication and stereotyped, repetitive behaviors. In Asperger syndrome, there is no clinically significant delay in language and intellectual development. I certainly agree with you that each person is unique and that the label of a psychiatric condition, such as autism, bipolar or a personality disorder, has only limited usefulness. In the best case, it can give a person a way to start learning how to overcome challenges that similar people have faced. At worst, a label predisposes others to look at the person through a certain lens and to expect certain behaviors. I have had many patients with psychiatric diagnoses ask me not to put that into their medical record, after having built up enough trust to share the diagnosis with me. People have had such negative experiences based on their diagnosis, their label, that I don’t blame them for wanting to avoid being stereotyped. There is so much variation in all of these conditions -- even in those of us considered neurologically typical -- that we need to recognize the good and the bad side of making such a diagnosis. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell. edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Shake Up Snow Globe Filled With Memories

There’s something magical about a snow globe. Who can resist shaking a liquid-filled decoration to watch it “snow”? I know families that collect them on their summer vacations, and on occasion they give them a good shake, turn them upright and then smile with the memories. Now you can make your own to commemorate something special you did in 2016. Reminisce with your kids about activities your family enjoyed this past year, and then make a memory snow globe using a small waterproof object to represent the activity or event. Here’s how: First, you want to have a vision for your scene and how it will be contained. Will you need a little jar, a fat jar or a skinny jar? A tall jam jar might accommodate that plastic bear figure as a reminder of a camping trip at a national park. A baby-food jar would make a perfect home for a little rubber starfish to represent the sea life you observed at an aquarium. It’s all up to you and your imagination. Step 1: Fill the jar with water and shake to test the lid for tightness. Pour the water out, remove the paper label and let it dry completely. Step 2: Choose a clean, waterproof toy, game piece, travel souvenir or trinket to inhabit the imaginary world. Place it temporarily inside the lid and lower the jar down over it, just to make sure it fits and allows enough space for the “snow” to fall when complete. An adult should glue the object on the inside of the lid with water-resistant glue, such as aquarium sealant from your local pet store. Let dry 24 hours. Step 3: Fill the jar almost to the top with baby oil, or use distilled water with a few drops of glycerin added. Sprinkle glitter or waterproof confetti into the liquid. An adult should apply water-resistant glue to the outside grooves of the jar rim and carefully screw on the lid. Stand the jar with lid end up to dry for 24 hours. Gather your kids around and shake your 2016 memory globe. Then hold still and watch. Extra tip for grandparents: Enjoy a “crafting fest” with your grandchildren, and let each one make a memory globe with objects that represent something you did together, such as a fishing trip, a book you read, a movie you saw or a recipe you cooked up. Talk about the memory as you create. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Penn State Heartbreak Penn State fans and alums knew there were going to be years like this, didn’t they? In what can only be described as a minor controversy for the Penn State Nittany Lions, their Big Ten championship season will end with a trip to Pasadena’s Rose Bowl, their Top 10 ranking all but ensured, win or lose. The Rose Bowl matchup with USC is very compelling and will no doubt be a wellcontested game. Still, after reeling off nine straight wins -- several of which were major massacres -- and a dramatic, come-frombehind win over Wisconsin in the Big Ten championship game, it can only be seen as a consolation prize for some and a more expensive cross-country commute for most. The College Football Playoff series, with its 12 wise men selection committee, was inherently flawed from the start. That’s what happens when you build the playoff formula based on five “power” conferences with only four playoff spots. This year, Penn State ended up with the square peg, despite having won the Big Ten conference championship. The entire point of having a powerconference structure was to help ensure against situations where teams with great records and strong schedule bona fides like, say, Ohio State, weren’t picked over teams that did what they were supposed to do by winning their conference. It was supposed to add a little stability. But we live in unstable times. The playoff committee is always quick to point out and tout the “human” side of the selection process. I’m not feeling it. While Michigan removed itself from the mix with two losses, Ohio State, which beat Michigan, gets the nod, despite losing to Penn State, who lost to Michigan but, again, won the Big Ten. Alabama and Clemson are clearly the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the country. I can see how Ohio State would be considered three or four. Washington, with 12 wins and one loss, can be seen as a contender for the four spot despite having a weaker schedule. It doesn’t add up for me. My top four are Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Penn State, with Michigan or Washington as your shafted No. 5. What’s truly peculiar about the situation is the nagging feeling you get about Michigan. The Wolverines still inspire a certain menace, and they could be the best team to take on Alabama and win. Nonetheless, Penn State, under the wise leadership of the East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania-bred James Franklin, has been gracious, it has shown humility. The Rose Bowl IS an honor, and it is a fitting cap to a great season. Take heart, those of you in Nittanyville, the bad days are finally over. You didn’t get the go ahead this year, but there is no doubt you’re back. Your future looks bright, and that is a welcome sight. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. 1. With sharp knife, remove skin and trim all but about 1/4-inch fat from ham. Stud ham with whole cloves. Place ham, fat-side up, on rack in large roasting pan. Insert meat thermometer into thickest part of ham, being careful that pointed end of thermometer does not touch bone. Bake ham in 325 F oven 2 1/2 hours. If ham browns too quickly, cover with a tent of foil. 2. After ham has baked 2 1/2 hours, prepare glaze: In 2-quart saucepan over medium-high heat, heat marmalade, orange juice, mustard, ground cloves and ground ginger to boiling. Reduce heat to low; simmer 5 minutes. Brush some of the glaze over ham; bake 30 minutes or longer until meat thermometer reaches 140 F (about 15 minutes per pound). Add raisins to remaining marmalade mixture; heat through and keep warm. 3. To serve, place ham on large, warm platter; garnish with drained pineapple rings, maraschino cherries and parsley sprigs. Serve with remaining marmalade mixture. Makes 18 servings. * Each serving: About 380 calories, 16g fat, 80mg cholesterol, 2,300mg sodium. * On Dec. 30, 1903, a fire in the Iroquois Theater in Chicago kills more than 600 people. The fire inspector had declared the theater “fireproof beyond all doubt,” even though it had no fire alarm and no sprinkler system over the stage. An asbestos curtain turned out to be made of paper, and the exits were locked. * On Dec. 27, 1932, at the height of the Great Depression, thousands turn out for the opening of Radio City Music Hall, an Art Deco theater in a formerly derelict neighborhood in Manhattan. Since its opening, more than 300 million people have attended events at Radio City. * On Dec. 29, 1940, London suffers its most devastating air raid when German planes firebomb the city. The next day, a newspaper photo of St. Paul’s Cathedral standing undamaged amid the smoke and flames seemed to symbolize the city’s unconquerable spirit. * On Jan. 1, 1959, a popular revolution led by Fidel Castro quickly takes over Cuba. After Castro nationalized American-owned property and allied himself with the Soviets, the U.S severed diplomatic and economic ties, and enacted a trade and travel embargo. * On Dec. 26, 1966, the first day of the first Kwanzaa is celebrated in Los Angeles under the direction of Maulana Karenga, the chair of Black Studies at California State University at Long Beach. The seven-day holiday celebrates African-American family, community and culture. * On Dec. 28, 1973, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s “literary investigation” of the police-state system in the Soviet Union, “The Gulag Archipelago, 1918-1956,” is published in the original Russian in Paris. Soviet officials were livid, and Solzhenitsyn was arrested, stripped of his citizenship and deported. * On Dec. 31, 1985, former teen idol Rick Nelson dies in plane crash in Texas. Nelson launched his pop career in 1957 by singing in an episode of “The Adventures of Ozzie And Harriet.” (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Some of us are moving into our most senior years alone. Perhaps we no longer have a spouse, or never had one. Not all of us have children. Or if we do, maybe their circumstances (or our relationship) won’t allow them to step in and take care of us if we get into a health crisis. Here are steps to take now, to be ready for whatever the future might bring. * Don’t let yourself become isolated. While it’s often more comfortable to just stay home, get out. Go to classes at the senior center. Volunteer somewhere. Make friends who see you on a regular basis and would know if you’re not somewhere you said you’d be. Cultivate a social network. * Get the paperwork organized. This can be huge and will take time, so start now. If you don’t have a will, see an attorney, one specializing in elder services. If you don’t have a medical power of attorney, sign one. Consider whether to have your monthly bills paid automatically from your bank if you become unable to write checks. * Stay as healthy as you can. If you ever needed a reason to lose some weight, let this be an incentive: What if you fall and can’t get yourself off the floor? Keep your bones and muscles strong with a good diet and exercise. * Keep your mind sharp. Brain games are available online and in books. Ask for some at the library. If nothing else, do the daily puzzles in the newspaper. * Consider whether you want to share living quarters with like-minded others, now or later. * Explore transportation options now, looking toward the day you might not be driving anymore. Perhaps taking a few of the above steps might be your New Year’s resolution. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Tidbits® of Gallia, Jackson, Vinton, Meigs & Mason Counties VA Pushes Research on Prostate Cancer

The headline on the Department of Veterans Affairs news release cited a grim fact: 12,000 veterans are diagnosed annually with prostate cancer. The VA’s partnership with the Prostate Cancer Foundation can’t come too soon. Their goal: to prevent, screen and promote research to speed the development of treatments and cures among veterans. To that end, they’re bringing together the big guns: researchers, data, cancer experts, advanced screenings and diagnostics. The PCF kicked in $50 million to get things started. PCF will be partnering with many groups around the country to enroll more veterans in studies, provide data for studies, increase the number of VA facilities applying to them for funding and much more. Key in cancer treatment will be the development of precision medicine. The research and data also will be shared with public agencies and corporations. This won’t be the VA’s first time partnering with others to search for cancer prevention and cure answers. In 2016 alone, it was part of 262 projects. The new efforts include the Million Veteran Program, the world’s largest database of health, military and genetic data; VA Precision Oncology Program, providing state-of-the-art care; and VA Cooperative Studies Program, a colonoscopy screening, which wants to enroll 50,000 veterans. Meanwhile, don’t wait for a call. Take charge of this. If you haven’t had a prostate-specific antigen test in a while, go get one. It’s a simple blood test that could save your life. Even if you have no symptoms at all, get the test. The result will tell you the likelihood that you’ll ever develop cancer. You might just be told to come back for another test so the results can be compared. The earlier you get on this, the better. So, go.
