LAWNS (cont’d) • A lawn absorbs rainfall and prevents run-off. In fact, a lawn is six times more effective at retaining water than a wheat field. • Lawns are better at producing oxygen than trees, and their season is longer, too. A lawn 50 feet (15 m) by 50 feet produces enough oxygen to meet the needs of a family of four. • Landscapes that include grass lawns, trees, and shrubs can reduce the air temperature surrounding a home by up to 14°F. • Lawns are healthier if clippings are left behind. Clippings shade the ground, slowing evaporation. They decompose, providing nutrients. Grass is healthier if allowed to grow taller, which gives it more surface for photosynthesis, and also crowds out weeds. • The drawback of lawns is that about 80 million pounds of pesticides and up to 70 million pounds of fertilizers are applied to lawns in the U.S. every year, far more per acre than crop land. • The smell of freshly mown grass or newly cut hay is actually the odor of a set of chemical compounds called green leaf volatiles which are given off by the plant when it is injured. Some of the chemical secretions rush to the injury to bind the wound and protect against fungal infections. Other chemicals act as airborne messengers, signaling predatory insects such as wasps who prey upon grass-munching caterpillars. And some chemicals merely taste bad, in order to discourage animals and insects from continuing to eat the plant. Plants downwind of the injured grass will also begin to produce these bad-tasting chemicals to protect themselves in advance of being eaten. This is the reason giraffes have learned to eat from a tree, and then continue to graze upon other trees that are upwind instead of downwind. (Continued next page)

Calming a Fearful Dog
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My little Schnoodle, “Daisy,” hates noises, thunder, firecrackers and more -- but only indoors. We can be outside and have large trucks go by with air brakes squealing, and she doesn’t care. But ordinary house noises, like windows creaking, have begun to bother her recently. Last year I got a new front door and it really cracks and creaks in the afternoon when it gets hot. She is petrified of this, shaking and panting the entire time. Please help, as we are at our wits’ end. -Pam, via email DEAR PAM: If the issue started over the past year, have the veterinarian check her out thoroughly. Not just her hearing and sight, but for any underlying conditions. While Schnoodles are less prone to certain health conditions of their parent breeds (poodle and Schnauzer), they could still suffer from inherited conditions. According to the AKC,
autoimmune thyroiditis is one possibility; behavioral changes like excessive anxiety are among the symptoms of this condition. However, even completely healthy dogs can develop a phobia to noise, perhaps because they attach a negative experience to a specific noise. In that case, TLC and training can help, along with medication if needed. Talk to the vet about Daisy’s noise phobia and work out a treatment and training plan, if possible. For example, use anti-anxiety medication for a time to help Daisy stay calmer, but then begin replacing meds with positive-stimulation training. This is done by making the sound that causes anxiety, but giving Daisy a favorite treat or praise each time the sound is made. There’s more to it than I have room to explain here, so consider working with a trainer to help Daisy handle that creaky door.

And it tolerates drought well, so it needs less watering. The plant is named after botanist Karl von Zois. A mixture of zoysia and fescue can stay green year-round in the southern U.S. The zoysia stays green in summer and fescue stays green in winter. • Bermuda grass is one of the most popular varieties of grasses for lawns in warm climates, but it is also one of the most allergenic. The flowers of the plant bloom almost continuously, but they grow so low to the ground that lawnmowers pass right over them. They produce pollen year-round in such prolific amounts that some cities have banned the plant. Bermuda grass is not native to Bermuda. Instead, it’s actually considered an invasive species in Bermuda. However, it arrived in the U.S. from Bermuda, and that’s how it got its name. GREAT GRASSES • Aside from lawns, grasses in general are an amazing group of plants. There are over 12,000 different species of grass, making it one of the most abundant families of plants. The scientific name for the family of grasses is “Poaceae” from the Greek word “poa” meaning “fodder.” Grasses are the single most wide-spread plant family, and can be found in areas ranging from jungles to deserts to mountaintops and tidal flats. • Grasslands account for over 25% of the vegetative cover on Earth, ranging from the savannahs of Africa to the prairies of the Midwestern United States to the steppes of Mongolia. Areas that do not have grasslands include places such as Greenland and Antarctica. Yet, a plant called Antarctic hairgrass grows in Antarctica and is listed by Guinness World Records as the southernmost flowering plant on Earth. There are about 1,400 species of grasses in the United States.

McCoy Cookie Jars Q: I am not really a collector, but I have two McCoy cookie jars that I’m curious about. Both originally belonged to my mom and are probably from the 1950s. One is a Jack-o’Lantern jar that was rarely, if ever, used. The second is a “Mr. and Mrs. Owl” and shows some wear. I remember the second jar always being full of vanilla wafers. -- Cora Ann, Tulsa, Oklahoma A: It isn’t much of a surprise that cookie jars are among the most popular collectibles produced by McCoy. It also is not a big shock that McCoy cookie jars also are plagued by fakes. Knowing the original measurements is helpful when trying to determine if a jar is the real McCoy or not. Your Jack-o’-Lantern jar was produced in about 1958, and according to “Warman’s McCoy Pottery,” by Mark F. Moran and published by Krause Books, it is valued in the $550 to $650 range. Since you indicated your jar is pristine, it would probably be worth on the high end. The same guide lists your owl jar at about $110. The Moran guide is excellent, and essential for anyone who collects McCoy items. *** Q: My mom visited New Orleans during the
1950s and while there she purchased a copy of “The Picayune Creole Cook Book.” Is it worth keeping? -- Tom, Pittsburgh A: Your cookbook was published in 1954 by the Times-Picayune newspaper. Since it was purchased during the 1950s, I assume it probably was the 12th edition. The first edition was published in either 1900 or 1901 and became an instant classic. The collection featured Creole recipes and generally sells in the $25 to $50 range, depending on edition and condition. *** Q: When I was a kid during the 1950s, I was given a small tin litho Shell service station and bank as a premium. When the employees (understandably) threatened to call the police, the man stole a hot dog and ran out. This makes it easier to recover when it is grazed, mowed, trampled, or burned. • The first grasses ever cultivated by humans were probably wheat and barley. Agricultural grasses grown for their edible seeds are called cereals or grains. Three cereals – rice, wheat, and maize (corn) – provide more than half of all calories eaten by humans. Of all crops grown by humans, 70% are grasses. • Fossilized dinosaur dung from the Cretaceous period 66 million years ago shows remnants of plants very closely related to modern bamboo and rice. Bamboo is the tallest species of grass. • Timothy grass is a grass commonly cultivated, cut, and baled for the purpose of feeding livestock. It’s named after American agriculturist Timothy Hanson, who convinced farmers in the northern U.S. that it could grow just as well in colder regions as it does in the south. • Cogon grass sports blades of grass that are so sharp they act like little knives. The edge of each blade is embedded with silica crystals that act like the teeth of a saw. The edges are sharp enough to cut the mouths of animals trying to feed upon it. Even the roots have barbed edges, cutting the roots of competing plants up to four feet (1.2 m) deep. • Pampas grass grows tall with feathery plumes often collected by people to serve as decorations. The word “pampas” is a South American term meaning “plain” and the plains of South America are the plant’s native habitat. Pampas is an invasive weed that is hard to kill. Each plant can produce over a million seeds during its lifetime. Pampas grass burns so hot that it contributes to spreading wildfire. Yet, the roots of pampas grass are likely to survive the fire, and live to spread another million seeds.

Amazing Plants ERGOT • Ergot is a toxic parasitic fungus that attaches to the seed heads of grasses such as rye, sorghum, and wheat. Bread made from seeds contaminated with ergot can affect any unlucky person or animal who eats it. • Ergot contains alkaloids that constrict blood vessels. This causes a host of problems, ranging from nausea and seizures to gangrene and death. It affects the brain as well, causing hallucinations and hysteria. • Throughout history there are stories of entire villages becoming sick with what was called “dancing mania” referring to convulsions and collapse, or “St. Anthony’s fire” referring to peeling, blistered skin. Even livestock who ate ergot-contaminated grains fell victim, and typically would lose their hooves, tails, and ears before dying. • In order to propagate, an ergot spore must land on the open flower of a grass plant. This is why it commonly affects rye (which has an open floret) and rarely oats (with a closed floret.) The spore must have access to the flower’s stigma, where it mimics a growing seed in the plant’s ovary, hijacking the nutrition that the rye plant intended to use to nourish the seeds. • The ergot remains in the ovary of the grass plant, where it resembles a grass seed. Under the proper cool moist conditions, the ergot bursts into bloom, producing very tiny mushrooms, the size of a grain of rice. It then drops a small sticky sweet pod to the ground, and inside the pod are millions of spores. Insects attracted to the sweet coating help spread the spores to other plants, and the wind disperses the rest. (cont’d next page)

After a great deal of sleuthing, he noted that ergotism was a disease suffered only by poor rural people and not by rich urban people. He realized that poor rural people ate rye bread which was cheap and readily available, while wealthier people in cities preferred the more expensive white bread made from wheat. His efforts to alert the populace fell on deaf ears. It was two centuries later before a researcher named Louis Tulasne, who was illustrating the life cycle of the rye plant, realized that ergot was a fungus separate from the plant, and that it has poisonous qualities. • Today, rye seeds are given a salt bath. The healthy seeds sink, while the ergot-infected imposters float to the top, where they can easily be scooped off. Ergot spores cannot survive if they are buried under more than an inch of soil, so deep plowing reduces the infection rate. The spores cannot survive more than a year, so farmers alternate crops with varieties that are not susceptible to infection. If wild pastures are mowed before the grasses flower, ergot contamination is reduced. • Ergot outbreaks are uncommon in developed countries due to these preventative measures. However, in less wealthy countries, ergotism still occurs. In 2001 an outbreak in Ethiopia was traced to contaminated barley following ideal conditions for an outbreak: moist weather, cool temperatures, and a delayed harvest. Barley flowers stay open longer when the weather is cool and wet, giving ergot a greater opportunity to infect the plant. • Ergot also has medicinal properties under the right conditions. Extracts from the plant can be used to relieve migraine headaches and reduce bleeding after childbirth. Ergot is the species from which LSD was first created.

WIMBLEDON
The most famous and the most expensive lawn in the world is the Centre Court at Wimbledon in England. It’s composed of perennial ryegrass, tended to yearround, and cut to a length of 8 mm (1/3 inch) tall prior to the two-week tournament. Here’s a bit of Wimbledon history: • The All England Croquet Club was founded in 1868. By 1875, the Club was suffering from a drop in membership and income because fewer and fewer people were playing croquet as more people began playing a new sport instead. The new sport was lawn tennis. • To increase revenue, the All England Croquet Club removed a croquet lawn and installed a tennis court instead. Then they changed their name to the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club. • In 1877, the Club needed to purchase a new roller to care for the lawns. To raise money, they decided to hold a championship tennis tournament. Only 22 people entered that first tournament (men only) but more importantly, 200 people turned out and paid a shilling each to watch. That was more than enough to cover the cost of the lawn roller. • The Club decided to hold a tournament every year, and every year it grew bigger. Named after the section of London where it was held, Wimbledon quickly became the most important tennis championship in the world. • By 1884 women were allowed to compete, and men’s doubles were added that year as well. Men’s and women’s mixed doubles were added in 1913. Brame Hillyard became the first man to play while wearing shorts in 1930. May Sutten of the U.S. became the first non-Brit to win, claiming the title in 1905 and 1907. In 1907 an Australian man won the title. Since then, only two players from Great Britain have won. • In 1922 Wimbledon moved to a new site and built a stadium big enough to seat 14,000 with standing room for thousands more. In 1932 with improved stands, attendance topped 200,000 over the course of the event, despite the world-wide economic depression. • The tournament was suspended during World War I, and during World War II the grounds were used for military purposes. A German bomb hit Centre Court in 1940, destroying 1,200 seats. Play resumed in Cajun 1946 andTurkey the grounds were completely restored by 1949. • When air travel became feasible in the 1950s, international participation soared. However, because Wimbledon was open only to amateur players, many of the best competitors were lost to professionalism. • In 1967, the BBC wanted to celebrate its entry into color television. They did so by sponsoring a tennis tournament for professional players, and the organizers of Wimbledon watched as many of their previous champions appeared on national TV, attracting much media attention and winning huge purses. As a result, Wimbledon was opened to all players in 1968. • Wimbledon is the only major tennis tournament still played on grass. It is attended by more than 500,000 people. • Rules state that all players must be dressed almost entirely in white. Wimbledon champ Roger Federer was told to switch his shoes because they had orange soles. • During the tournament, over 50,000 tennis balls are used. Those not in use are stored in a refrigerated container. Wimbledon once used white tennis balls which were replaced with yellow balls in 1986 to make them more visible to TV cameras.

By Keith Roach, M. D, Stretching Helps Ease Spinal Stenosis Pain DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife suffered from spinal stenosis. She had a cortisone shot, which helped for 90 days. She had regular physical therapy meetings. She was in constant pain, but insisted on playing tennis (against her doctor’s wishes). Then, we happened to vacation for a month in Florida, and one of the offered activities was a “stretch” workout. She insisted that she wanted to try it. After the very first time she thought she felt a little better. She went to several more sessions, and finally asked the trainer what she could buy to keep it up at home. The trainer suggested a stretching DVD. It takes about an hour to complete it, and she now does it three times a week. She plays hard tennis five days a week, hasn’t complained about pain since 2010, and hasn’t needed any physical therapy, either. I continue to be amazed. Certainly this kind of therapy can’t hurt anyone, since you do it only to your personal comfort levels. Perhaps you might mention this type of therapy in your column sometime. It worked miracles for us at virtually no cost. -- R.M. ANSWER: Spinal stenosis is caused by pressure on the nerves at the level of the spinal column. Physical therapy is one effective treatment, and one I always recommend prior to considering surgery. I thank you for taking the time to point out that gentle stretching can help, probably by opening up the spaces in between the vertebrae to allow the nerve more room. How can veterans be tested or diagnosed early enough for a possible successful cure? Are there any current tests available? -- J.A.E. ANSWER: I am sorry to hear about your relative. Cholangiocarcinoma is cancer of the bile duct, a rare cancer. Liver flukes are a risk factor, and so is a condition called primary sclerosing cholangitis, a condition associated with ulcerative colitis. The cancer is rare but highly lethal, because by the time symptoms show up, the cancer usually is advanced. Also because of its rarity, screening for the cancer in a general population won’t be effective. However, for people at high risk, such as those with PSC or a history of liver parasites, at least one study has shown that screening with a blood test (CA 19-9, CEA) or by endoscopy can be effective. Prime Cuts The last few weeks of March, the first few weeks of April ... these are the prime cuts for sports fans. You have two leagues -- the NBA and the NHL -- wrapping up their regular seasons, hopefully with a little drama and playoff implications. The two best championship tournaments in all of sports are being played -- the NCAA basketball tournaments and The Masters -- and hope springs eternal for the entire nation as baseball teams break camp and head off for their home openers. At no time are there more sport fans on equal footing, more engaged in the goings-on of their favorite team or sport. I never liked the “March Madness” moniker. It’s only madness if you think that anybody outside of Duke, Kansas, North Carolina or Kentucky can win the men’s tournament. These play-in games are a joke, but I guess it’s all that some students will ever really have in terms of feeling the electricity of a national audience. It’s not like Red Bank State or Twizzler Tech is ever going to cut down any nets ... it’s just better than the programming alternatives for the night. And you have to hand it to the ladies, they have really done a great job marketing and presenting their game. The past year has been the first where I’ve heard very serious discussion and praise of the women’s game, and that’s a great thing. And please, do not weep for Sergio Garcia. Far from the “lovable bridesmaid” the fake news media have been making him out to be -- this tough-luck Spaniard who never wins anything -we can finally stop with all of that nonsense now that he has won the finest championship in all of sports -- The Masters. And he’s won plenty, something like 30 tour wins, and he’s about to marry Golf Channel personality Angela Akins, who according to the failing BBC News, wears the “shortest skirt on campus.” What’s everybody so upset about? The guy plays golf for a living. The Masters is the finest tournament in the world and one of the greatest things humans do on Earth when it comes to sports. It’s a place where the best come to shine, where people behave -- ever heard of anyone getting in a fight at The Masters? -- where there isn’t a cellphone (calls are free), not a speck of garbage, and food and beer are inexpensive (and tasty). The entire world outside of the National could be on fire and nobody on the grounds would know until they exited the front gates. We need more places like Augusta in the world. More teams make the NBA and NHL playoffs than do not. Think about that for a moment. It’s absurd, but not when your team makes the playoffs (and if they don’t, you feel terrible). It’s good to have the Canadian teams back; it just feels wrong when they’re not playing the game that gives their lives so much purpose. That said, I think this finally is going to be the Washington Capitals’ year, providing they get past the Penguins and Rangers, and beat the Blackhawks in the finals. On the hardwood, you’d be nuts to bet against Stephen Curry and Golden State, but as long as LeBron is on the floor, there’s always a chance for Cleveland. And of course the Cubs will repeat. AARP conducted a study to look at financial fraud victims based on psychological mindset, and behavioral and demographic characteristics. One notable result was that victims tend to look at the accumulation of wealth as an important life achievement, more so than average investors who had not become victims. Some results of the study: Most victims are over age 70, male, conservative, very religious, married, with a college degree and with income over $50,000 per year. They keep their eyes open for investments. One-third had not checked out a broker before making an investment, and victims are likely to make investments with people they don’t know, such as in response to an email, phone call or TV ad, with telephone being the most frequent. One-third of victims are not on the Do Not Call list, which can limit sales calls. More than half receive at least one call a month about investment sales. Over 40 percent of victims are considered “active traders,” those who make five or more investment decisions in a year. Nearly half have invested two or three times in something that turned out to be worthless. To view the study, go to the AARP website (aarp.org) and put “AARP Investment Fraud Vulnerability Study” in the search box. The best way to protect yourself against any type of fraud is knowing what to look for. For lots of information on all types of fraud, go online to AARP.org/FraudWatchNetwork. While any effort is to be applauded, the numbers just aren’t getting much better. Here are the averages for some recent years: 2001 -- 19 per day 2010 -- 21 per day 2012 -- 22 per day 2014 -- 20 per day Yes, the Department of Veterans Affairs has taken steps, but it clearly isn’t enough. We have the 24/7 Veterans Crisis Line for immediate help by phone, chat room and text message (1-800-273-8255, press 1) or online at www. VeteransCrisisLine.net or text 838255. We have analytics to predict who’s at risk so providers can intervene. We have Tele Mental Health services for remote help. We have a PTSD phone app with self-management tools. It’s not enough. It’s not enough because you can’t fix a problem until you know exactly what it is. Getting correct numbers requires the data input from a great many locations. Each report that comes out assesses the numbers in a different way: by age group, drug and alcohol use, gender, era of service and comparison to the civilian population. The number that’s hard to deal with is that no matter what, the rate of veteran suicide per day isn’t significantly changing. Then there are those who say the daily veteran suicide rate is closer to 35. One VA-provided stat offers hope: Those who are under the VA’s care have a lower rate of risk for suicide.
