Pull up your britches and read what Tidbits has in store for you on the history of everyone’s favorite garb! • The word “jeans” has become synonymous with “Levi’s,” but Levi Strauss wasn’t the first to market these pants. Jean fabric can be traced back to Genoa, Italy and Nimes, Frances. Clear back in the 17th century, a sturdy fabric partly composed of wool was called “serge de Nimes,” which accounts for our term “denim.” Another linen/wool blend was popular in Genoa, which may be the reason for the word “jeans,” since “Genes” is the French word for Genoa. Both were generally used for work clothes and overalls. Genoese sailors also used jean fabric as a cover to protect merchandise on the docks from damp weather, as well as for their work pants. The fabric was dyed blue with indigo harvested from plantations in India. • In 1846, 18-year-old Loeb Strauss left his native Bavaria, Germany to join his older brothers in New York, where they operated a dry goods store. Four years later, with the California gold rush in full swing, Loeb, now Levi, moved to San Francisco to start up his own business, supplying the miners with durable clothing. turn the page for more!

BLUE JEANS (continued): Strauss used his stock of brown cotton tent canvas to produce plain trousers, with no belt loops or back pockets, just a cinch belt in the back to hold them up. The pants were sewn in San Francisco, in a combination of factory and home sewing production. The overalls proved to hold up against the rough life of miners, farmers, and cattlemen, and Strauss’ business thrived. In 1872, Strauss received a letter from one of his customers, a Nevada tailor named Jacob Davis. Davis wrote of the method he used to make trousers stronger by using metal rivets at the points of strain, such as pocket corners and the base of the fly. Davis wanted to obtain a patent for the process, but needed a business partner to finance his idea. He sought out Strauss as a partner, Strauss agreed, and in 1873, the pair were awarded Patent #139,121 for their riveted pants. Manufacturing began on the copper-riveted “waist overalls,” the name given to the trousers. The brown cotton canvas pants were continued, and Strauss added denim, having it dyed an indigo blue, obtaining his fabric from Manchester, New Hampshire’s Amoskeag Mill. During the 1880’s, additions to the overalls included their trademark orange stitching, the little front “watch pocket,” and a leather patch with an illustration of two horses sewn on the back waistband. Because the patent on riveted clothing was due to run out in 1890 (after which any company could manufacture them), Strauss wanted a memorable trademark on his product that would distinguish his from others. The leather patch accomplished this, and his original jeans were often called the “Two Horse” brand until the word “Levi’s” was registered as a trademark in 1928.

MTS COINS 151 2nd Avenue, Gallipolis Cat Has Appetite for Plastic
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a 19-month-old cat, “Sissy,” who loves to chew on plastic shopping bags and whatever other plastic she may find. This started about six months ago. I feed her and her two siblings very well. Is there anything I can do to get her to stop? -- Rae H., Weaverville, California DEAR RAE: Plastic shopping bags make a lovely crinkling sound when chewed, and the texture is quite interesting. While some of the cats I’ve cared for over the years couldn’t care less about gnawing on such things, others were fascinated with crinkly plastic, crumpled paper and similar interesting items. Now, I can’t tell you exactly why a cat picks a specific material to chew on. You should certainly take Sissy to the vet for a checkup and discussion about her new behavior. Often
it’s not health-related. Sissy may be looking for a little more excitement in her life. The risk of chewing on plastic, of course, is that she might ingest bits of it, and that can cause significant health problems. A small bit of soft shopping-bag plastic may not seem like much, but if she’s also sampling, say, the harder plastic of water bottles or milk jugs, small shards of those can be swallowed. In the short term, I recommend keeping plastic shopping bags and other tempting items out of Sissy’s reach, and spend more time playing with her and scattering cat-safe toys around the house to try and redirect her attention. Online at www.lovemytidbits.com BLUE JEANS (continued): • The weight of the denim in the original riveted, button-fly pants was called 01-weight. When lot numbers were assigned to the various products, these pants became known as 501’s, the name still in use today. The less-expensive version were known as 201’s. • The early 1900’s brought changes to the jeans industry. Strauss added two back pockets to his overalls in 1901. In 1902, Levi Strauss died at the age of 73, and bequeathed his company to his nephews. (Strauss’ descendants still run the company today.) The April, 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire completely destroyed the headquarters and factories of the company. By November of that year, a new factory had opened. In 1911, the company phased out the cotton duck canvas overalls entirely, offering only the blue denim variety. • Belt loops weren’t added until 1922; however, the suspender buttons were left on, along with the cinch on the back of the waist. That little red tab on the right back pocket was first used in 1936, a folded red ribbon with the word “Levi’s” stitched in white, and sewn into the seam of the 501’s pocket. Zippers were used for the first time in Levi’s in 1954. Clear until 1960, the Strauss Company continued to call the 501’s “waist overalls” rather than “jeans.” • Levi’s 501’s gained in popularity when actor John Wayne wore them in the 1939 western film “Stagecoach.” • In 1946, another brand of jeans specifically for cowboys and rodeo wear came on the scene. Wrangler tailors designed their jeans for in-saddle comfort, and with rivets placed so as not to scratch the saddle. Their ad campaigns featured pictures of rodeo legends and cowboys in the saddle.

Tidbits® Full of Fun, Facts & Trivia! Hopalong Cassidy Box Camera Q: At a recent garage sale, I paid $50 for a Hopalong Cassidy box camera. My husband thinks I overpaid. What do you think? -Dorothy, North Canton, Ohio A: According to “Hopalong Cassidy Collectibles” by Joseph J. Caro, there were two types of Hoppy cameras made, and both are extremely collectible. The camera is an all-metal Brownie that takes 120 size film, with a top strap and metal plate featuring the images of Hopalong Cassidy and his horse, Topper. The only attachment was a special flash that was sold separately. Without the original box, your camera is worth about $250. I have seen this camera sell for more at auction. Q: I have a number of serving dishes in the Candlewick pattern. Tell me what you know about this glass. -- Frances, Rio Rancho, New Mexico A: Candlewick glass was made by the Imperial Glass Company from 1936 until October 1982. According to “Glass A-Z” by David Shotwell and published by Krause Books, the pattern, known as Imperial’s No. 400, identified the plain glassware that was molded with beading around the rims and bases or stems of most of the pieces
the company produced. For values, I suggest you contact antique dealers in your area. Q: I have written to you three times and you never answer my request. I have a brand-new fishing reel that has never been used. It has a nice design and I have never seen anything like it. Thanks for answering or go to hell. -- George, Albuquerque, New Mexico A: Because of the volume of letters and email I receive, I am not able to answer each and every question from readers. You have written me four times, not three, and in none of your letters have you told me really anything about your reel except that it has a beautiful design and was sold by Sears. Sears marketed dozens of reels, and I have no idea which one you have. Because of that lack of information, I do not have a source for you. Incidentally, there is no need to invite me to go to hell. I live in Phoenix. Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox cannot personally answer all reader questions, nor does he do appraisals. Do not send any materials requiring return mail. by Samantha Weaver * It was American philosopher George Santayana who made the following sage observation: “Language is like money, without which specific relative values may well exist and be felt, but cannot be reduced to a common denominator.”
* If you’re like me, you find it hard to resist a good book, and their abundant availability presents a problem: Good books are being published faster than they can be read. This leads to an extensive TBR (to-be-read) list, much of which is stacked on the bedside tables of readers the world over. (The introduction of ebooks has only worsened the problem; now the books stack up with no visual reminder of how many there are.) I don’t have a solution, but it may help to know that the Japanese have a word to describe this behavior. “Tsundoku” means “the acquiring of reading materials followed by letting them pile up and subsequently never reading them.” * Polar bears can grow to be massive, weighing more than 2,000 pounds as adults. However, when they’re born, polar bear cubs weigh no more than a pound. * In January of 1914, the Ford Motor Company doubled workers’ wages, to $5 per day, stating, “We want those who have helped us to produce this great institution and are helping to maintain it to share our prosperity.” Describing this unprecedented move, The Wall Street Journal opined “[Ford has] committed economic blunders, if not crimes.” Confounding critics’ expectations, Ford doubled its profits within two years. * Religious scholars know that they’ll find no mention of peanuts, cashews, pecans or macadamias in the Bible; the only nuts mentioned in that book are almonds and pistachios. *** Thought for the Day: “The walls of books around him, dense with the past, formed a kind of insulation against the present world and its disasters.” -- Ross Macdonald (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

In 1951, crooner Bing Crosby, who loved his Levi’s, wore them on a hunting trip to Canada, and was refused a room at a Vancouver hotel, since they were considered lowclass. The Strauss Company responded by custom-tailoring a denim tuxedo for the singer. As the years wore on, jeans became more acceptable, and became the norm for casual wear. • The 1960s brought bell-bottom jeans, Strauss’ first pre-shrunk jeans, and the very first television commercial for Levi’s jeans. • Designer jeans were launched in the 1970s, with Calvin Klein, Gloria Vanderbilt, Ralph Lauren, and Jordache leading the pack. Distressed jeans came into high demand in the 1980s, with worn, faded, and “stone-wash” jeans commanding up to $200 a pair. Various chemicals, special dyeing methods, sandblasting, and adding pumice stone to the washing process produces the worn, vintage look. Stains, tears, and repairs add to the appeal of distressed jeans. • Hundreds of songs have been written about blue jeans over the years, including “Angel in Blue Jeans,” “Devil in Blue Jeans,” “Forever in Blue Jeans,” and “Venus in Blue Jeans.” • In 1993, the Strauss company sponsored a contest to find the oldest pair of Levi’s in America. Named the “Send Them Home Search,” the challenge generated a winning pair dating to the late 1920s. • The average American owns seven pairs of jeans.

UNUSUAL PLANTS: INDIGO What makes our blue jeans blue? Follow along as Tidbits investigates the indigo plant and the blue dye obtained from it. • The indigo plant is a member of the legume family, with more than 300 species identified. Just two of these 300+ are used in the production of indigo dye. The plants, anywhere from 2 feet to 6 feet (0.6 to 1.83 m) tall, have a single woody stem, with oval dark-green leaves and clusters of red flowers resembling butterflies. The dye comes from fermentation of the leaves. • Use of indigo dye dates back to ancient times, with Egyptian mummies from 2400 B.C. found wrapped in linen with deep blue stripes. A cuneiform clay tablet from 600 B.C. containing a recipe for dyeing wool was found in Mesopotamia. Explorer Marco Polo brought word of indigo back to Europe after his late 13th-century travels. It was about that time, in 1289, that the first known recorded use of the word indigo as a color in the English language was made. • The plant gets its name from the Greek word “indikon” and the Roman term “indicum,” both of which translate “a product of India,” where at least 50 different species of indigo are grown. • The process of extracting the dye from the plant leaves and converting to indigo has been the same for thousands of years. Tanks are arranged in a step-like layout. Freshly-cut plant leaves are placed in to top-most tank and an enzyme is added to break down and ferment the leaves. Fourteen hours later, the resulting liquid is drained into the next tank and stirred with large paddles to mix it with air.

The remaining dye is heated to stop further fermentation, then filtered, and dried to a thick paste that can be formed into cakes. • In ancient times, indigo was considered a luxury item and was so valuable, the cakes were used as currency. • As demand for indigo increased throughout Europe in the 1600s, the supplies in India were not enough, and the plant was cultivated in the New World, with Spanish explorers bringing indigo to Central America (particularly El Salvador and Honduras), Jamaica, and the Virgin Islands. • It takes a lot of leaves to produce a small amount of dye, but not a lot of dye to color jeans, only a few grams for each pair. • When Levi Strauss’ denim jeans became popular, indigo production could not keep up with the demand. Chemists set to work researching a synthetic method to produce the dye. In 1883, a German chemist named Adolf von Baeyer developed a process to produce indigo, leading to a Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his discovery. • Today, most denim is dyed with synthetic indigo, with about 20,000 tons produced every year for jeans. Cotton and linen threads are soaked and dried in dye 15 to 20 times to achieve the hue. Silk threads are dyed more than 40 times. The color can be deepened by drying in the sun. • In the color spectrum, indigo is one of the seven colors of the rainbow, located in the spectrum between 420 and 450 nanometers in wavelength.

UNUSUAL PIES
January 23 is National Pie Day, a fitting time to check out various types of unusual pies. • Grasshopper pie might not be too appetizing if you take its name literally. In the original version of this pie, a favorite in the Philippines, real grasshoppers are used, but that’s nothing like the North American version. It’s a recipe that’s been around since the 1950s, and features green crème de menthe liqueur and whipped cream. The liqueur lends its bright green color to the confection, resulting in the name. It’s usually made with a chocolate cookie crust. • You can’t guess the ingredients of Shoofly Pie from its name. This sweet treat has its origins in the 1700s and comes to us from the Amish and Pennsylvania Dutch. As these settlers sailed to North America, they brought nonperishables that could endure a long boat trip, including brown sugar, molasses, lard, and spices. Shoofly is a sweet coffeecake-like treat with a molasses crust and topped with whipped cream. It’s believed it got its name from the sweet molasses odor attracting flies that must be “shooed” away. • Funeral pie doesn’t sound very appetizing, but pay no heed to the weird name. It’s another delicious Amish pie consisting of raisins, cinnamon, and allspice. It received its name because it was usually given to comfort a grieving family in the loss of their loved ones. But it’s not just served at funerals, you can also sample the goodness at a wedding celebration. • Banoffee pie shouldn’t be too hard to figure out. It’s an English dessert pie invented in East Sussex, England in 1971, and combines bananas, cream, and toffee. Variations include the addition of chocolate or coffee or both.

UNUSUAL PIES (continued): • Chess pie has nothing to do with that strategic board game. It’s a pie common in America’s South, with its filling a mixture of eggs, sugar, butter, flour, and corn meal. As far as the origin of its name, most probably it’s because the English lemon curd filling is very similar to lemon chess pie, and the word “chess” might be an Americanization of that term. Recipes for this pie date back to the mid-1860s. • Mincemeat pie, often served at Thanksgiving and Christmas, has been a dish served since the 13th century. Its recipe calls for a variety of fruits, including apples, raisins, currants, and cherries, along with beef suet, which is raw beef fat, and a mixture of several spices, such as cloves, allspice, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Some folks add venison meat to the recipe, along with beef broth, apple cider, or brandy. If you’re not feeling up to making it from scratch, jars of prepared mincemeat pie filling are readily available. • You should be able to guess where Derby Pie got its start. This chocolate and walnut tart in a pastry crust was created in 1950 at Prospect, Kentucky’s Melrose Inn, and is often associated with the Kentucky Derby. Other additions include pecans and Kentucky bourbon. • What in the world is a bumbleberry? Well, there is no such berry, but a bumbleberry pie is the name given to one made with blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, and blackberries. A razzleberry pie contains just the raspberries and blackberries.

By Keith Roach, M. D, Clean-Freak Dad Turns Into Hoarder
DEAR DR. ROACH: I know you’re not a psychiatrist, but I hope you can help. My dad was a single parent raising us kids, and he was always clean when it came to housework. Every room in our house was almost spotless. But lately, we have noticed him becoming a hoarder and being more disorganized. By that, I mean keeping weeks-old newspapers on the floor, the kitchen table, everywhere, and he gets upset if we try to help him clean. He’s 79. Could it be a sign of senility or Alzheimer’s disease? -- R.S. ANSWER: Hoarding behavior can have several psychiatric causes, and, indeed, a psychiatrist may be necessary to make the diagnosis. However, odds are that your dad always had some form of obsessive-compulsive disorder, and with age has become worse. There are other possibilities. Fronto-temporal dementia, a type of dementia that is distinct from Alzheimer’s disease, has a variant in which personality and behavior changes are prominent, but given the history of what sounds like unusual cleanliness habits, I would suspect that OCD is the most likely diagnosis. There usually is a long delay from the time symptoms begin until the time the diagnosis is made. A diagnosis needs to be made before treatment -- be it medications, psychotherapy or some combination -- can begin. Treatment can improve not only the hoarding behavior, but also the distress your dad is feeling. A psychiatrist or psychologist is the expert in making the diagnosis and for treatment. The new booklet on Alzheimer’s disease gives a detailed presentation of this common illness. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 903W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: In discussing treatment of nail fungus, you did not mention newer laser treatments that I see advertised by podiatrists in my area. Are they effective? -- J.F. ANSWER: We don’t really know if they are effective, since well-done studies haven’t yet proven it; however, preliminary evidence is suggestive. This would be a great addition to treatment, since the only currently accepted highly effective treatments are oral medications, which have risk of liver damage. Even more exciting is the idea of combining a topical antifungal agent, amorolfine, with laser. This medication is not available in the U.S., but a study in Korea showed a 50 percent effectiveness rate (which is pretty good for this difficult-to-treat condition). Since I last wrote about this condition, I heard from a lot of readers. Some mentioned cures from Vicks Vapo-Rub, but the only study I found on that showed a 22 percent cure rate. One person asked about surgery, but since the fungus gets into the nail bed, the infection often recurs after removing the nail. Listerine and white vinegar mixed half and half cured one couple, and several people had success with Dr. Paul’s Piggy Paste, which also is vinegar-based. None of these has good data to support its use, but all likely are safe. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell. edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Tidbits® of Gallia, Jackson, Vinton, Meigs & Mason Counties Bowls Are Trendy, Family Friendly
Big bowls, tiny bowls, bowls that are just right. They’re all part of the “bowl” craze that has grabbed the attention of the culinary world and landed on our kitchen tables. And I’m in. So is my son Anders, who has a special bowl he uses day in and day out, starting with breakfast. Come dinnertime, he uses it again and often assembles last night’s leftovers topped with veggies or herbs from the garden and grated cheese for bowl food deliciousness. Of course, he could put everything on a plate, but bowls are unexpected, easy to hold and simply more fun. Robin Asbell, cookbook author of “Great Bowls of Food” published by The Countryman Press (2016), says that bowl meals are colorful and that their simplicity really appeals to all ages. “They are great for families, because they are so flexible and can be customized for each diner with no fuss. If someone doesn’t like beets, leave them out of their bowl, or use a vegetable they prefer.” Her recipes reflect her commitment to healthy eating and trying new ingredients to make family meals interesting and tasty. Inspired with the many possibilities for creating bowls of food, I landed on “Pizza Bowl with Soft Polenta, Spinach and Mozzarella.” It’s a twist on pizza, full of good-foryou ingredients, including rib-sticking polenta as a base. PIZZA BOWL (Serves 4) 1 cup polenta 3 cups water 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese 4 ounces baby spinach 1 cup prepared spaghetti sauce, heated 8 ounces fresh mozzarella, small balls or chopped 1/2 cup fresh basil, finely sliced 1. In a 2-quart saucepan, whisk the polenta, water and salt. On medium-high heat, stir until the mixture comes to a boil. Reduce heat to low and stir every 5 minutes, scraping the bottom of the pan. Cook for about 25 minutes, until thick. Stir in Parmesan cheese until melted. Keep warm. 2. To serve, divide the spinach between four bowls and top with polenta. Measure 1/4 cup of hot spaghetti sauce over each bowl and top with mozzarella. Top with shredded basil, and serve. Note: If preparing polenta in advance, transfer to a 9-inch pan after cooking, smooth the top, and let cool. To serve, reheat in the microwave or cut in wedges and saute in olive oil until crisp and heated through. Resources: Find Robin’s books, recipes and cooking techniques at www.robinasbell.com. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Clemson, Won and Done Chances are, if you ever spend a little time at Angelo’s Fairmount Tavern in Atlantic City, you will run into the odd Dallas Cowboys fan. They can be found at the bar or found in the restaurant proper, drinking house wine and shoveling in plates of pasta underneath the watchful eyes of all the sports memorabilia on the walls. “I’ve alwaaays been a Cowboys fan,” is the familiar refrain. Nobody knows why this is, however. Is it because of Roger Staubach? Tom Landry? The handsome star on their helmets? The cheerleaders? What is it about this team that makes guys like Gov. Chris Christie go to their home games at the taxpayers’ expense and hug on Jerry Jones while wearing orange sweaters? Atlantic City is the kind of place that will forgive you if you are a Philadelphia fan. They may even forgive you if you like the New York Mets. But when you’re rooting for teams from South Carolina and Alabama, is that where you draw the line? Here’s a guy from Galloway who changed his Facebook profile picture to the Alabama Crimson Tide logo. Why? “I love Nick Saban,” he says. OK. What does he love about jolly ol’ Nick? “He’s on the Bill Parcells coaching tree,” he responds. Turns out the guy is a high-school football coach. The whole coaching tree thing is a popular trend for fans, and apparently, coaches these days. So really, Coach? The love of Parcells extends all the way to Alabama? Have you ever visited that state? Ever left Atlantic County? “Never thought of it like that,” he says, deleting his profile picture. “Yeah ... kind of weird that a whole place is cheering on South Carolina and Alabama.” Not to be a contrarian, but I disagree again. We’re not so much cheering on South Carolina as we are cheering on a great game. “And this is a great game,” he says in agreement. One day removed from the Giants’ kind of lame loss to Green Bay (yes, he’s wearing a jersey), it’s as if college football made everything right in the world again. The game goes into the waning minutes, and it’s like the best heavyweight fight you’ve ever seen. Clemson scores. Alabama scores. There’s one second left on the clock and Clemson is on the 2-yard line. Every single person is in rapt attention, all eyes on the TV screen. Deshaun Watson wins the game. He is the living embodiment of “Rocky II.” The entire restaurant erupts in exhilaration. We have seen football future, and its name is Deshaun. This kid can flat out play. The tabs start getting paid. Vegas, it is said, took a huge loss on the game. Nobody feels bad ... they’re already looking forward to the next game. “Think Dallas can beat Green Bay?” That’s why they play the game, right? Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Winter Vegetable Chowder
With our freeze-now, serve-later vegetable chowder, you can give your family a comfy meal on even the busiest weeknight. This thyme-scented chowder boasts a creamy finish thanks to a dose of half-and-half (or light cream, for the caloriewatchers). 6 medium leeks 2 tablespoon olive oil 4 medium stalks celery 3 medium parsnips 2 medium red potatoes 1 butternut squash 2 can vegetable broth 4 cups water 1/2 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme leaves, plus thyme sprig for garnish 1 teaspoon salt 3/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper 1 cup half-and-half or light cream 1. Cut off roots and trim dark-green tops from leeks. Discard any tough outer leaves. Cut each leek lengthwise in half, then crosswise into 1/2-inchwide slices. Rinse leeks in large bowl of cold water; swish to remove sand. With hands, transfer leeks to colander, leaving sand in bottom of bowl. Repeat rinsing and draining, several times, until all sand is removed. Drain well. 2. In 6-quart saucepot, heat oil on medium-high until hot. Add leeks, celery and parsnips, and cook 10 to 12 minutes or until all vegetables are tender, stirring occasionally. 3. Add potatoes, squash, broth, water, thyme, salt and pepper; heat to boiling on medium-high. Cover; reduce heat to medium-low and simmer about 10 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Stir in half-and-half and heat through, about 13 minutes. Spoon half of soup into tureen and garnish with thyme sprig; then spoon remaining into freezer-safe containers. Yields 15 cups, or 8 main-dish servings. To Reheat After Thawing: Top of range: In covered saucepan, heat to boiling on medium, about 25 minutes, stirring often. Microwave oven: Heat in microwave-safe bowl, covered, on Low (30 percent) 10 minutes, stirring once or twice, then on High 15 to 20 minutes, stirring once. The AARP has released the latest Network of Age-Friendly Communities, and 135 places across the country have made the list. While the criteria are intended to ensure that people of all ages can easily live there, the biggest benefit is to seniors. Each community aims for improvements in outdoor spaces, transportation, housing, social participation, respect and social inclusion, work and civic engagement, communication and information, and community and health services. How it plays out varies by the community. Check the AARP website and look at the selection of slideshows to get an idea about what these communities offer. * See before-and-after photos of a remodeled house in Florida, with everything from bathroom grab bars to hard flooring for easy wheelchair movement. * Check out the Des Moines, Iowa, slideshow with the miles of walking trails and bike paths, affordable housing and seven medical centers. * Birmingham, Alabama, offers a slow-biking community ride every week on flat terrain. * Macon, Georgia, was one of the first communities to join the Age-Friendly network. It’s created a 316-page document about all the things it’s done and intends to do to make the whole town age-friendly. * Newport, Vermont, in an area of high unemployment, has created intergenerational community gardens, cooperatively run by schoolchildren and seniors alike. * Bowdoinham, Maine, keeps a “tools” table in the Town Office with a selection of devices that are helpful to seniors to make life easier. To learn more, sign up on the AARP website (www.aarp.org) for its Livable Communities e-newsletter. It’s not just for those interested in living in those communities, but for shakers and movers who want to help their own communities. Even if we’re not quite ready to retire, it doesn’t hurt to start thinking ahead to what sort of place we’d like to live in. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

This is a noble effort, especially since a previous goal was to end veteran homelessness in 2015, using such programs as the Mayors Challenge to End Veteran Homelessness. Still, the statistics say the rate of veteran homelessness came down 17 percent between 2015 and 2016. VA Secretary Robert McDonald wants to challenge the VA and partners to pull together all their resources to get veterans into permanent housing. This surge came from an idea used in Tampa, Florida, which held its own “Operation Reveille” with great success. The one-day event sought homes for as many veterans as possible. Tampa modeled its program after the Stand Down, where veterans can access health care, get clothing, ask about support services -- and get housing assistance -- all in one place. The goals for this new surge are to get veterans into permanent housing over the next 60 days; use the HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) vouchers, which provide for case management and clinical services; be sure all veteran-allocated housing is filled; use all residential program beds; help get veterans off the streets immediately; and approach landlords about veteran housing. To get housing help either for yourself or a veteran you know, go online to www.va.gov/ homeless (use a computer at the library if you don’t have Internet access) or call 1-877-4AID VET (877424-3838). Attending a Stand Down also can open a lot of doors. If you (or a veteran you know) haven’t been to one, go online to www.va.gov/homeless/events. asp and view the list of events in your area. If you can help in any way, check all the info at www.va.gov/homeless. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
