What’s your definition of hot? This week, Tidbits turns up the temperature to investigate the various meanings of the word. • “Hot” is not all about temperature. A hot car can be either capable of very fast speeds or stolen. Law enforcement might engage in hot pursuit of the hot car. Someone in trouble is said to be in hot water. The newest musician on the scene might be described as one of the hottest young talents in the business. Gamblers at a table in a Las Vegas casino might say, “The dice are hot tonight,” meaning they are bringing unusually good luck. Hot also describes a bold and intense color, such as hot pink. • How hot is the sun? Well, pretty hot! At its center, the temperature reaches around 27 million degrees F (15 million Kelvin). However, it’s much cooler on the sun’s surface – less than 10,000 degrees F (5,700 Kelvin). The temperature at the center of the Earth is about the same as the sun’s surface temp. If you think the sun’s surface is a hot place, it doesn’t even compare to the core of the planet Jupiter, which is five times hotter than the sun’s surface. With the exception of the sun’s center, Jupiter’s core is the hottest part of our solar system. turn the page for more!

SOME LIKE IT HOT (continued): • Different types of lava have varying temperatures, depending on their chemical composition. Basaltic lava, also known as Hawaiian lava, has a temperature of 1832 to 2282 degrees F (1000 – 1250 C). It has the least amount of silica content and is the fastest-flowing type of lava. Andesite lava temperatures range from 1742 to 2192 degrees F (950 – 1200 C), while dacite temperatures are between 1472 and 2012 F (800 – 1100 C). This is the type that erupted from Mt. St. Helens. Rhyolitic lava has a high gas content, flows very slowly, and reaches temperatures of 1292 to 1652 F (700 – 900 C). • Actors Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon teamed up with Marilyn Monroe in 1959 to star in a romantic comedy called Some Like It Hot. The plot featured Curtis and Lemmon as musicians who disguised themselves as women in order to escape Mafia gangsters whom the pair had witnessed committing a crime. The movie was set in 1929 in Chicago in the midst of Prohibition, around the time of the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. Although Monroe was a box office star, she was responsible for a multitude of difficulties in filming due to her addition to pills, resulting in a lack of concentration and inability to memorize her lines. One scene required 47 takes for her to get the simple line of “It’s me, Sugar” correct. Curtis and Lemmon made private wagers on how many takes would be needed until Marilyn got it right. The American Film Institute voted Some Like It Hot as the #1 comedy film on their list of “100 Years, 100 Laughs.”

Can Dog, Grandson Ever be Friends?
Tell Them You Saw It In Tidbits® DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I was hoping that my 3-year-old grandson and my dog “Charlie” would get along. But Charlie, who’s a little Chihuahua, always barks like crazy when my grandson walks in the room. It scares my grandson, who starts crying. How can I bring these two together to be friends? -- Jerry T., Wichita, Kansas DEAR JERRY: You may need to wait until your grandson is a little bit older to properly introduce them. Charlie appears to be getting stressed when the toddler comes into the room. Is Charlie a rescue? Maybe there’s an incident in his past that is making him nervous when small children are around. Or, being a small dog, Charlie may simply be unnerved by your grandson’s size or gait. If your grandson is old enough to follow instructions and exercise some self-control, you can carefully introduce the two. Hold
Charlie in your arms so that he feels safe, and so you can keep him at or just a little higher than your grandson’s line of sight. Tell your grandson not to try and touch or grab Charlie, and to speak quietly. At this point, if Charlie remains calm when he’s face to face with a toddler, then give your grandson permission to pet Charlie gently. If your dog growls or gives any sign of being stressed, back away or have your grandson pull back, to prevent any nips or wild barking. Don’t get discouraged if the relationship doesn’t work out, and don’t force it. Instead, focus on teaching your grandson how to safely approach and interact with dogs. When he’s older and has more self-control, you again can try to bring them together. Send your questions, comments and tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com SOME LIKE IT HOT (continued): • In 1912, American pharmacist Wilbur Scoville developed a scale for measuring the hotness and spiciness of chile peppers. He called his method the Scoville Organoleptic Test and based the scale on the exact weight of dried pepper dissolved in in alcohol to extract the heat components, known as capsaicinoids. The world’s hottest pepper is the Carolina Reaper, which is a crossbreed between a ghost pepper and a red habanero, first bred in a South Carolina greenhouse. The average rating is 1,569,300 Scoville heat units, but the hottest individual pepper on record was a smokin’ 2.2 million SHU. Compare this with an ordinary jalapeno pepper, which measures about 8,000 SHU. • Gold miners working 2.5 miles (4 km) below the surface at South Africa’s Mponeng gold mine have a pretty hot work environment. Because rock temperatures in the mine can reach 150 degrees F (66 C), the walls are insulated with concrete and ice is pumped into the mine to make for safe working conditions. Mponeng Mine is the world’s deepest mine, and miners must take a one-hour trip from the surface to reach the bottom of the mine. • In July of 1996, Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith launched one of the world’s first webmail services, introducing the ability for users to access their inbox from anywhere in the world. They named their service Hotmail, which derived its name from the computer language used to create web pages, HTML. Seventeen months later Hotmail had more than 8.5 million subscribers, and it was sold to Microsoft for $400 million.

This all-wooden washboard sold at auction for $195. It is 22 inches high and still in working condition, although it is at least 80 years old
All-Wooden Washboard The 19th century in the U.S. was a time of invention. The patent office at first required a working model of an invention, but later, just accurate drawings and details were enough. Victorians loved gadgets and specialty tools. There were hundreds of patents granted for apple peelers, lighting devices, corkscrews, fruit jars, washing machines, washboards, toasters, napkin rings and cooking pots, and today there are collector clubs for almost every one of these specialties. An unusual all-wooden washboard was sold in 2016 by Hess Auction Group. It has threaded wooden rollers instead of a corrugated metal or glass rubbing surface. The maple rollers rolled in opposite directions and, according to the ads, the “screw threads do all the work.” The first wooden rollers were made by the Hubbard Brothers, and the Mother Hubbard Roller Washboard was a popular item sold door-to-door in the early 1900s. The washboards were no longer made after 1935, because they were not needed if you had an electric washing machine. At the 2016 auction, a Mother Hubbard Patent Roller Washboard sold for $195. *** Q: How much are the 1996 edition of Pokemon cards worth? are missing. We think some might be worth something. How can we find out? A: Pokemon started out as a video game for Game Boy in February 1996. The name Pokemon is a contraction of the words “Pocket Monster.” The first Pokemon cards were Pocket Monster cards issued in Japan in October 1996. There were 102 cards in the set. The first Pokemon cards in English were in the Demo Game pack, issued in limited quantity in December 1998. The first set of 102 cards in English was issued in the U.S. in January 1999. There are over 700 different Pokemon characters today. Incomplete sets of cards sell online for a few dollars. Value is determined by rarity and condition. The best place to find current values is to go to a card show or to a store that sells cards. *** CURRENT PRICES Doorstop, Winnie-the-Pooh, resin, red and yellow paint, seated, arms above head, c. 1975, 21 x 12 inches, $145. While we usually think of water’s boiling point as 212 degrees F (100 C), that number is not a constant. That is the temperature for water at 1 atmosphere of pressure, or sea level, but as you gain altitude, water boils at a lower temperature. For those who live below sea level, atmospheric pressure is increased, and the boiling point is higher. Purity of the water can also affect how hot the water must be to boil. Salted water boils at a higher temperature than pure water. • Playwright Tennessee Williams won the 1955 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his play “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.” Williams, born Thomas Lanier Williams III, penned the story of a wealthy Southern family living on their Mississippi plantation. The plot chronicled the turbulent relationships of the Pollitts, whose cotton tycoon patriarch is slowly dying of cancer. The play was made into a film in 1958, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman. • Those who engage in firewalking walk across a bed of hot coals. The ancient act dates back to 1200 B.C., and was a test of an individual’s strength, courage, or faith. How do they do it? According to physics, the amount of time that the foot is in contact with the coals, combined with the fact that embers are not good conductors of heat enable the deed. The laws of thermodynamics say that when two bodies of different temperatures meet, the hotter body will cool off, and the cooler body will heat up. In other words, the foot’s temperature tends to change less than that of the embers. It sounds strange, but it’s actually better to walk at a slower pace, because a person is more like to be burned by running because the feet are pushed deeper into coals, and the tops of the feet are burned.

UNUSUAL PLANTS: VIOLETS There are nearly 600 species of violets found in dozens of countries across the globe, including North America, home to about 60 species. This week, Tidbits picks a bouquet of facts about these delicate little flowers. • The genus Viola includes the popular dogtooth violets as well as delicate pansies. While many varieties have a sweet scent used in perfumes, lotions, and oils, others are completely odorless. • Violet flowers are edible and are often candied or crystallized for use in jellies or as decorations. A Sweet Violet blossom is preserved by coating it in egg white and dipping in crystallized sugar. A hot sugar syrup can also be poured over the fresh flower until the sugar dries and re-crystallizes. The French manufacture a violet syrup from the flower’s extracts and use it to make marshmallows. • Not only are violets beautiful, they’re also nutritious. Petals and stems of violets are rich in the antioxidant Vitamin C, and in fact, contain more Vitamin C than most other vegetables • The viola plant’s medicinal qualities have been studied in several human studies, and evidence indicates that it improves cough suppression in children suffering from asthma. Another study showed the extract’s oil to be effective in treating insomnia. The oil also has been proven beneficial as an ingredient in laxatives.

The Greeks regarded the violet as a symbol of fertility and love, using them in love potions. Violets were also used in their wines and food, as well as for medicinal purposes. A garland of violets worn on the head was said to help prevent headaches and vertigo. The flower was so popular that it became the symbol of Athens. • French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte loved violets so much that he adopted them as his “signature flower.” When his wife Josephine died in 1814, Napoleon covered her grave with violet blossoms. After he was exiled to Elba in 1814, he told friends that he would return before the violets bloomed, leading his followers to call him Corporal Violet. His supporters used violets to test loyalty. When people were asked if they liked violets and they responded, “Eh, bien,” their loyalty to Napoleon was proven. • The common blue violet is also a favorite of the people in Wisconsin, Rhode Island, Illinois, and New Jersey, states that have all declared it their official state flower. • African violets, the world’s most popular houseplant, aren’t really violets at all. They belong to the same family as the primrose, and are native to Tanzania’s tropical rainforests. The scientific name of African violets is Saintpaulia, named after Baron Walter von Saint Paul, the man who discovered the plant in 1892. While real violets prefer shady and cool areas, African violets do best in bright sunlight and should be placed in a sunny window. They also grow best in a humid environment, and should have a humidifier or bowl of water nearby to boost humidity. The leaves are covered with tiny hairs, which help the plant absorb water from the air. African violets are a great houseplant for pet owners, because they are completely non-toxic.

Tidbits® of Gallia, Jackson, Vinton, Meigs & Mason Counties HEIMLICH MANEUVER Because it’s National Heimlich Heroes Week, Tidbits is focusing on the life-saving technique, the Heimlich maneuver, along with its creator. • Henry Heimlich, an American thoracic surgeon and medical researcher, graduated from Cornell University, and received his M.D. in 1943. Before he created his famous maneuver designed to save people from choking, he invented the chest drainage flutter valve, now called the Heimlich valve. This device allows and air and blood to drain from the chest cavity, while preventing air from traveling back, used to treat patients with emergency chest wounds or with a collapsed lung that needs to re-expand. Although we hear mostly about the Heimlich maneuver, the chest valve has saved more lives. • Heimlich first described his method of using abdominal thrusts for choking victims in a 1974 article in the Journal of the American Medical Association. He was compelled to create the maneuver after reading that of all accidental deaths, choking was the sixth leading cause. Up to that point, the accepted method of dislodging an object was to slap a choking victim on the back, although this had been shown to drive the object deeper into the chest. Within days of his publication in the journal, a Seattle restaurant owner was reported to have used the abdominal thrust procedure to rescue a choking victim. After a syndicated columnist associated with the medical industry wrote about the new maneuver in his column, the Journal began receiving a large volume of life-saving stories, and the techique became known as the Heimlich Maneuver.

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com HEIMLICH MANEUVER (continued): • The maneuver involves a rescuer standing behind a patient using his/her hands to apply pressure on the bottom of the diaphragm. This compresses the lungs and puts pressure on the foreign object lodged in the trachea. It’s actually possible to perform the Heimlich maneuver on yourself by making a fist with one hand and placing the thumb of that hand below the rib cage above the navel. The other hand then grasps the fist and presses the fist into the area with a quick upward thrust. It’s also possible to lean over a table edge, chair, or railing, and quickly thrust the upper abdomen against the edge. • In the years following the journal article, Henry Heimlich went on to invent the Heimlich Micro-Trach, a portable oxygen system that allows direct delivery oxygen to the lungs through a tube inserted through the throat. His invention gave patients more freedom to move, as well as making their oxygen tanks last longer. • It’s estimated that tens of thousands of people have been saved from choking by use of the Heimlich maneuver, including such famous names as Ronald Reagan, Elizabeth Taylor, Goldie Hawn, Walter Matthau, and Jack Lemmon. Heimlich himself saved two lives, the first time in 2000, when, at age 83, he saved the life of a man choking in a restaurant. In his words, “I turned around and saw a man choking so I did the Heimlich Maneuver and got it out and then went on and had my lunch.” Shortly before his death in 2016, when he was 96 years old, he rescued a fellow resident of his senior living community by employing the maneuver.

By Keith Roach, M. D,
Modern Thoughts on the Paleo Diet DEAR DR. ROACH: After a few months of stress eating, I have gained a lot of weight. People swear that the Paleo diet would help me lose weight and feel better. Do you recommend it? -- H.C. ANSWER: Most diets have good points and bad points, and work better or worse for different people. The Paleo diet is no exception. The theory behind Paleo is that humans are best adapted to the diet that Paleolithic man ate 10,000 or more years ago, which was high in meat, with relatively large amounts of fruits and vegetables, and no grains or dairy. I disagree with the theory on several points, especially that I think it is a fundamental misunderstanding of adaptation, in that there’s no guarantee that evolution produces a “best” adaptation, merely one that’s good enough. Paleolithic man ate what he had to to survive, not necessarily what was optimal for his health. The part about the Paleo diet that I do like is its recommendation against highly refined grains and other processed foods. I don’t agree with the usual recommendation to eat so much meat. It’s important to remember that the meat Paleolithic man ate, until just before being eaten, was busily running away from him and did not have remotely the fat content of today’s supermarket meat. The nuts and vegetables available to modern man are vastly different from those available to Paleolithic man, according to a great talk from Christina Warriner. Finally, there is abundant evidence that preagricultural man, from many different societies, had atherosclerosis in the unlikely event he lived into his 40s. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: In my late teens and early 20s, I suffered bad acne that resulted in scarring that is still visible now, even though I am in my 40s. I assume it will be visible for the rest of my life. My acne was cured when I took Accutane. Now I also suffer from ulcerative colitis. Even though I can’t make a direct connection as a side effect of Accutane, the symptoms of UC first showed shortly after I completed my treatments for acne. Now that my children are entering their teens, is it possible for them to avoid my fate? Are acne problems like mine hereditary, or can they avoid the problems I experienced with proper hygiene? -- B.B. ANSWER: Acne, familiar to almost all teenagers, is caused mostly by the bacteria P. acnes, but also by hormonal changes that affect the skin oils and cells, predisposing the skin to bacterial growth. Hygiene has a limited effect on acne, with overwashing and oily cosmetics causing the most problems. Acne does tend to run in families, so your children are more likely to have worse acne than usual. The association of ulcerative colitis, a type of inflammatory bowel disease, with isotretinoin (Accutane) is intensely debated, with the most recent data and the opinion of professional groups generally that isotretinoin probably does not cause IBD. While I can understand why you might wish to avoid it, it remains the most effective treatment, and is still worth considering if other options fail. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med. cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. * Alexander III of Macedon earned the moniker Alexander the Great by embarking on an unprecedented military campaign in Asia and north Africa after he became king at the age of 20. By the time he was 30, his empire stretched from Greece to present-day India. One of the things that made his army different is that he required his soldiers to be cleanshaven. He felt that during battle, beards made a convenient handhold and could be grabbed by their enemies. * You might be surprised to learn that there is no such thing as a poisonous snake. Of course, there are venomous snakes. What’s the difference, you may ask. Well, something that is poisonous has detrimental effects when you ingest it -- for example, poisonous mushrooms. As a general rule, eating snake meat won’t hurt you. Because snakes inject the toxin into your bloodstream, they’re venomous. *** Thought for the Day: “A writer -- and I believe, generally all persons -- must think that whatever happens to him or her is a resource. All things have been given to us for a purpose, and an artist must feel this more intensely. All that happens to us, including our humiliations, our misfortunes, our embarrassments, all is given to us as raw material, as clay, so that we may shape our art.” --Jorge Luis Borges (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

New Scam Targets Your Social Security Check Here we go again: yet another scam aimed at seniors. This one involves Social Security. It’s almost believable, so we need to be extra careful. What the scammers want is to steal your money. This is how it works: Someone will call and pretend to be from the Social Security Administration. You’ll be told that you’re about to get an increase in your benefits. All they need to do, say the scammers, is to verify all your personal information. After all, they say, you do want to get your extra benefits, right? You’ll be asked for your date of birth, Social Security number, banking information and more. Armed with all this personal data, it’s easy for the thieves to have your money directed to them at a new address or bank account for direct deposit. Until your benefits don’t show up, you’ll never know that something has happened to your money. Something to remember if you get a call that’s supposedly from Social Security: It already has all your information. It’s not likely that Social Security will ever call you anyway, but if they do, there’s no need to tell them anything. If you ever have questions about whether a call is legitimate, be safe: hang up immediately. Then call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 and ask if someone there just called for any reason. If the answer is no, make a report with the Inspector General fraud office at 1-800-269-0271. Remember that next year we’ll start getting new Medicare cards that won’t have our Social Security number as the identifier. The card will come in the mail; you don’t have to do a thing. If you get calls saying you have to pay for your new card or give personal information, hang up. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

The reports, which cover age group, gender, suicide rates by state and more, are must reading for those who work with veterans in mental health and suicide prevention. Ideally, this information will help gain insight into high-risk veterans and increase the support at the community level. The VA went through 55 million records and came to these conclusions: * The number of veteran suicides varies across the country, but generally mirrors the rate in civilian populations. Suicide rates are higher in the Western U.S. and in states with smaller populations. * Older veterans (above age 50) have the highest rates, accounting for 65 percent. * Veteran suicide rates are 22 percent higher than civilians. For men, the percentage is 19 percent higher and for women 2.5 times higher than civilians. * The 20-something veteran suicides per day number is still holding. It’s just not getting better. VA Secretary David Shulkin, however, might have pinpointed the reason when he stated that of that number of suicides per day, 14 were not under VA care. If you’re a veteran and are having suicidal thoughts, get yourself to the VA. Do it now. You also can call the Veterans Crisis line 24 hours a day, every day of the year, at 1-800-273-8255 (press 1). You can chat at VeteransCrisisLine. net/Chat, or send a text to 838255. But do something. Let them help you. If you’re the spouse or friend of a veteran at risk, don’t just hope for the best. Again, do something. Make the calls and ask for guidance. Go online to www.veteranscrisisline. net/ and click Family/Friend. Look at Signs of Crisis and learn to recognize them. You can make all the difference. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
