TIDBITS® STUDIES THE ELEMENTS by Janet Spencer

In 1773 French chemist Antoine Lavoisier was the first person to define an element as a substance which could not be broken down into simpler components. Russian scientist Dmitri Mendeleev was the first to arrange the elements into the periodic table. Come along with Tidbits as we consider the elements! THE PERIODIC TABLE • Elements on the periodic table are listed in order of the number of protons they have, known as the atomic number. There are currently 118 elements listed on the periodic table. Of these, about 98 are found in nature. The rest are man-made, usually involving either a nuclear reactor or a particle accelerator. • In the periodic table, the names of the elements are abbreviated using one or two letters. Some abbreviations make sense: hydrogen is H, oxygen is O, and carbon is C, and cobalt is Co. Copper, which might sensibly be abbreviated “Co” is instead “Cu.” Why? Because elements that had Latin names were abbreviated according to those names: copper in Latin is “cuprum”; gold is “aurum” (Au) and iron is “ferrum” (Fe). • “Oxygen” comes from the Greek words “oxys” meaning “acid” and “genes” meaning “producer” in the mistaken belief that oxygen was a component of all acids. ELEMENTAL NAMES The planet Uranus was discovered in 1781, and in 1789 a scientist named uranium (U) after the planet in spite of the fact that there is no uranium on Uranus. Neptunium (Np) was named after Neptune and plutonium (Pu) was named after Pluto. Polonium (Po), a radioctive element, was named for Marie Curie’s native Poland. Radium (Ra) was named for the fact that it radiates and glows. In 1949 when scientists working at the University of California Radiation Laboratory in Berkeley, California discovered a new element, they named it “berkelium” after the city. They hoped that the chemical symbol would be “Bm” because the element had been such a “stinker” to find. However, the symbol for the new element became “Bk” instead. Berkelium is a radioactive metal which can only be produced inside nuclear reactors. Only a single gram of this element has been produced in the U.S. since 1967. BUILDING BLOCKS Our bodies are largely composed of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen. Phosphorus is needed in bones and in DNA. Sulphur is needed for proteins to form. Iron transports oxygen in the blood stream. Calcium is required for bones and teeth. Sodium and potassium carry electrical pulses in the nerves. Magnesium governs over 300 chemical reactions in the body. These elements form the basic building blocks of life; about fifteen others are required in trace amounts for life to continue. Carbon is named after the Latin word “carbo” meaning coal. It’s the fourth most abundant element in the Universe after hydrogen, helium, and oxygen. Carbon atoms are able to form very long, very stable chains with more types of other atoms than any other substance. This is why life on earth is “carbon-based.” (Continued next page)

TIMBER TRAIL OUTDOOR STOVES

Cold, Ice No Problem for Determined Dog

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Hank” is 14 years old and has arthritis. I’m worried about walking him in the snow this winter. Last year, his legs and paws were too sensitive for boots, so I used to put little socks on his paws and cover them with plastic sandwich bags tied with rubber bands. That worked well, but last winter I couldn’t get them on him because his legs and paws, especially the front ones, hurt too much. I’ve tried to train him to go on training pads inside the house, and he does so occasionally. However, he is adamant about going outside in the morning! -Lauren G., via e-mail DEAR LAUREN: I know you’ve heard me and others recommend booties for dogs going out in freezing, icy conditions, but in this case I think you should defer to your dog’s

judgment. Hank really wants to go outside, and he really does not want to wear booties. I have a feeling that he is shifting his weight around and adjusting his paws when he’s in the unfamiliar little booties, and that shifting and extra movement can exacerbate his arthritis. If it is not super-cold outside (like, below zero), and Hank has clear stretches of sidewalk, he should be just fine with a short walk each morning to do his business. Try putting a doggie vest around him to keep his core temperature up, if he’ll tolerate it. Immediately after his walk, after he sits or lies down in a warm spot, check his paws for cuts or cold spots, and keep an eye on him to make sure he’s warm enough and relatively comfortable. Send your questions or pet care tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com CHEMICAL WEIRDNESS • Chlorine is a poisonous and corrosive gas but when you combine it with sodium it turns into salt which is essential for life. Carbon and oxygen are also essential for life, but when you combine the two you get carbon monoxide which is deadly. Carbon and nitrogen combine to form basic building blocks of all organic matter, but the two can also be combined to form cyanide, a fatal poison. Hydrogen is extremely flammable and oxygen is required for burning, but when you combine them you have water which puts out fires. Uranium is one of the heaviest elements, but when it decays, it produces helium, which is one of the lightest elements. • The simplest element in the universe, hydrogen, happens to be the most abundant. The second simplest element, helium, is the second most abundant. But the streak ends there. The third simplest element is lithium (the lightest metal), which is not the third most abundant element in the Universe. The third-place spot belongs to oxygen, which is the 8th simplest element. Ga IS FOR GALLIUM • A French scientist named Lecoq de Boisbaudran discovered a new element in 1875, which he named gallium. He claimed the name sprang from the Latin name for France, which is “Gallia” but others accused him of naming it after himself, since his first name “Lecoq” meaning “rooster” is “gallus” in Latin. Gallium is a metal that is solid at room temperature but which melts at 84 degrees F, meaning you’ll be holding a puddle of silvercolored liquid if you hold it in your hand. As a practical joke, scientists would mold spoons out of gallium and hand them to unsuspecting people when serving tea. The spoon would dissolve into a puddle in the bottom of their teacup. Tidbits® Full of Fun, Facts & Trivia! Shoes of Glass Q: My late aunt had a small collection of about a dozen glass shoes. Are they worth keeping? -- Beth, Waco, Texas A: Little glass shoes were made in hundreds of styles, shapes and colors. They were a favorite of Victorian-era collectors and cluttered parlors throughout the country, especially during the early decades of the past century. One of the better guides is “Collectible Shoes of Glass,” by Earlene Wheatley and published by Collector Books. Some typical prices are: Slipper by Daisy & Button, $75; Slipper with daisy design by Gillinder, $100; and high-button boot in frosted amber, $75. Many of the more common examples sell in the $25 to $50 range. *** Q: I have a collection of about 50 VCR tapes featuring mostly science-fiction movies and oddities. I have been told that they aren’t worth keeping. What is your opinion? -Steve, Fort Smith, Arkansas A: Most VCR tapes sell in the $1 to $3 range. Values depend on several factors, including condition, rarity and collectability. There are always exceptions. For example, some VCR tapes are worth several hundred dollars each, including such titles as “Evil Dead,” “Savage Intruder,” “Back for Revenge,” “Dr. Frankenstein’s Castle of Freaks,” “Petrodactyl

Woman” and the “Star Wars” triology. I suggest you monitor eBay to determine current prices. *** Q: I have a Bucky Beaver cookie jar made by Metlox. It is in near-mint condition. I am curious about both the company and the value of my cookie jar. -- Lou, Des Moines, Iowa A: The Metlox Pottery Company was founded in 1927 in Manhattan Beach, California. Some of its most desirable pieces were designed by well-known sculptor Carl Romanelli, who worked from the late 1930s through the 1950s. The company closed in 1989. After checking eBay and several other sources, I believe your cookie jar to be worth about $175. *** Q: I have a Jim Beam bottle issued during the 1971 Bing Crosby National Pro-Am tournament. What is it worth? -- Stan, Colorado Springs, Colorado A: I found your bottle referenced in “Bottles: Identification and Price Guide,” by Michael Polak and published by Krause Books. According to Polak, your bottle is valued in the $5 to $7 range. Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. For Advertising Call or Text 740-441-7633 Sb IS FOR ANTIMONY • Antimony is a silvery grey metallic element. Today it’s used as an alloy with lead and tin to make lead-acid batteries, solder, bullets, and cable. Long ago it was used as a laxative. Antimony pills cause violent digestive purging, but the pills pass through the digestive tract unchanged and could therefore be recovered and reused over and over again, giving it the name “the everlasting pill.” Some people conjecture that Mozart died as a result of taking too much antimony to combat a fever. King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon painted his palace walls yellow using paint pigmented with a mixture of antimony and lead. Perhaps as a result of this toxic mixture, he soon went mad. When antimony is mixed with hydrofluoric acid, the combination produces an acid that is billions of times stronger than stomach acid and will eat through everything except the Teflonlined containers it’s stored in. N IS FOR NITROGEN • Fritz Haber was a German scientist who researched nitrogen prior to World War I. He discovered how to “fix” nitrogen so that it can be used as a fertilizer in soil, resulting in vastly improved harvests. For his work he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1918. The irony, however, is that Haber wasn’t interested in improving the human condition when he made his discoveries. He was actually working on figuring out an easy way to gas people to death in warfare. When nitrogen didn’t work as an agent of death, he turned his attention to chlorine, and his work with poisonous chlorine led to many soldiers being gassed. He subsequently became known as “the father of chemical warfare.” His work on a pesticide he called “Zyclon A” was furthered after his death, and became known as “Zyclon B.” This is the gas that was used in the gas chambers during the Holocaust.

Amazing Plants CASTOR BEAN • The castor bean is not actually a true bean. True legumes are in the family of Fabaceae but castor beans are in the family Euphorbiaceae. The Latin name of the species is Ricinus communis. “Ricinus” comes from the Greek word meaning “tick” because the bean resembles a blood-engorged tick. “Communis” simply means “common.” • The plant is native to eastern Africa, India, and the Mediterranean, but now grows in tropical environments worldwide. In the southwestern U.S. it is considered a weed. In warm climates it grows as a perennial and looks like a shrubby tree. • The castor bean is not eaten as a food crop, but is instead grown because the bean yields versatile and valuable oil called castor oil. Most people are familiar with castor oil due to its laxative properties, yet castor oil has a wide number of other uses as well. • Castor beans have been found in Egyptian tombs dating back to 4000 B.C. The oil from the bean was used thousands of years ago in facial oils and in oil lamps for lighting. • Millions of pounds of castor oil are used each year to make lubricants, soap, paints and dyes, ink, waxes, brake and hydraulic fluid, nylon, pharmaceuticals, perfumes, polishes, plastics, and more. It’s used widely in the food industry as flavorings and to inhibit mold. It is the basic ingredient of Castrol-R racing motor oil for high speed engines. In terms of total production, castor oil is one of the world’s most important industrial vegetable oils. • Castor beans are a little bigger than pinto beans. The beans are shiny and covered with intricate designs. Like fingerprints, no two beans are ever the same. Despite their beauty, castor beans are among the most deadly seeds on the planet. For Advertising Call or Text 740-441-7633 CASTOR BEANS (cont’d) • Castor beans contain a substance called ricin. Ricin is one of the most toxic poisons known. Weight for weight, it’s 6,000 times more poisonous than cyanide. A dose the size of a grain of table salt is enough to kill a man. • The poison is contained in the shell of the bean and it is water-soluble. It can be extracted and concentrated using the same methods that are used to extract cyanide from almonds. If a bean is chewed and then swallowed, water in the intestinal tract absorbs the poison. As few as four to six beans can be fatal. If the bean is swallowed whole, the poison is not absorbed. Because ricin is water-soluble and not oilsoluble, castor oil does not contain ricin. • Ricin kills by disrupting the ability of cells to synthesize protein, so the most basic level of cell metabolism is interrupted. • During World War II, the U.S. and Canada tried to use ricin in cluster bombs. • Ricin poisoning can be survived with supportive medical care, and a vaccination is also effective. • Bulgarian dissident Georgi Markov was killed by a ricin pellet as he waited for a bus in London in 1978. He was injected with a pellet embedded on the tip of an umbrella. He died days later, and the autopsy found a tiny sphere embedded in his thigh. • Bulgarian defector Vladimir Kostov survived a similar attack, perhaps because the ricin pellet that was injected into his back was covered with wax. The wax melted only slightly, so the ricin leaked in small amounts. This made him ill but did not kill him. • In 2014, actress Shannon Richardson was sentenced to 18 years in prison for sending ricin-laced letters to Barack Obama and Michael Bloomberg. She had been trying to frame her estranged husband for the crime.

CHLORINE TRIFLUORIDE • One of the deadliest chemicals ever discovered was developed by German scientists who were looking for chemical weapons for use in World War II. Chlorine trifluoride is a colorless, corrosive, poisonous, explosively reactive gas which seeks to replace hydrogen atoms with fluorine atoms. This chemical reaction rips atoms apart and generates excessive heat. Therefore, any substance that contains hydrogen, which is one of the most common elements on the planet, will burn when it comes into contact with chlorine trifouride, generating what is called a fluorine fire. • Keep in mind that fluorine is one of the most reactive elements in the periodic table, and will react with nearly every other element in the periodic table. It exists naturally as a toxic pale yellow gas but it is excessively difficult to isolate due to its explosive properties. Many early scientists were injured or killed while trying to work with fluorine. Its name comes from the Latin word “fluo” meaning “flow.” • If you put chlorine and fluorine together in a vat made of nickel and heat the mixture to 536° F (280°C) the result is chlorine trifluoride. • When chlorine trifluoride is exposed to air, it boils. When exposed to water, it explodes. When it decomposes, it gives off deadly corrosive gasses. Things not normally thought of as flammable will burn explosively when in contact with chlorine trifluoride, even without any kind of ignition source, including glass, Teflon, asbestos, sand, rocks, bricks, and concrete. There are no effective methods of putting out the fire. (continued next page)

CHLORINE TRIFLUORIDE (cont’d) A chlorine trifluoride fire will continue to burn even without oxygen, and pouring water on the flames will result in explosions and toxic gasses. In chemistry books listing its properties, you’ll find this entry: “Suitable extinguishing media: None.” The only way to transport chlorine trifluoride is inside airtight drums made of steel, iron, copper, or nickel which have been coated with fluoride. If the fluoride coating of the container should become damaged, even by a mere scratch, explosions result. Containers made of platinum, titanium, or tungsten, which are some of the hardest minerals on Earth, will burst into flames immediately upon contact with chlorine trifluoride. During World War II, the Nazis wanted to use it in flame throwers but it burned up any part of the flame thrower not made of steel. They tried to load it into artillery shells so they could launch it against the ramparts of concrete fortifications but found the artillery shells explosively dangerous. The Nazis abandoned the substance because it was too dangerous to manufacture, store, and ship. In the 1950s U.S. scientists tried to ship the substance in bulk for the first time ever. Unfortunately, a tank holding nearly a ton of the stuff accidentally ruptured and spilled. It burned through a foot of solid concrete and then three feet of gravel underneath a warehouse, all while releasing toxic gasses that corroded everything they touched. No one could put out the fire and many people had to evacuate the area. Today chlorine trifluoride is produced in small quantities and used to clean superconductors. It is also used to make semiconductor chips for computer circuitry, and it’s used in nuclear reactors to reprocess nuclear fuel rods.

By Keith Roach, M. D,

Blood Test Results Wildly Different DEAR DR. ROACH: I went in for an annual examination with my primary-care doctor, and she had my blood tested at a laboratory. She told me that I have high potassium, 5.5, and had me retake it. I did, and the test came back with a much lower level of 4.3! What could have caused the level to go up so high? Was this due to eating a lot of avocado and yogurt? I was eating a whole avocado for breakfast and a yogurt with apple and peach. Should I be seeing a specialist to recheck it? Please advise what I should do. -- A.V.R. ANSWER: Avocados and yogurt are high-potassium foods, and peaches and apples are medium-potassium foods. Most people can take in high amounts of potassium without worry, since the kidney is very good at getting rid of potassium if the body doesn’t need it. I more often see low potassium levels, from poor intake or from medications, such as diuretics, which can cause the body to lose potassium. However, some people with kidney disease (especially severe kidney disease) need to carefully watch and limit oral potassium intake. By far the biggest reason for a potassium blood test to come out abnormally high relates to the lab itself. Samples that sit around a long time or that are shaken will have broken blood cells, which release high levels of potassium into the serum, causing false elevations in the lab. If you didn’t change your diet between the two tests, there is no reason to worry at all. Your primary doctor is the right person to see. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have chronic constipation, and have had this most of my life. I have used most of the bulking (husk) things that are out there. Nothing works for me. Years ago, I went to my doctor, and he said that I could use MiraLAX and use it for the rest of my life. It has worked! Now my new doctor wants me off of it, wants me to incorporate fiber into my diet. I already do this. Plus I drink a lot of water in a day. I start my day with 24 ounces of water every morning before anything else. Is there anything wrong with taking MiraLAX every day? I do not take the full dose. -- V.B. ANSWER: While I recommend non-drug treatments, such as increased water intake, high-fiber diet and exercise, as treatment for constipation, that doesn’t work for everybody. In that case, using a medication as recommended by your doctor makes sense. Polyethylene glycol (MiraLAX) is a generally safe treatment that works by increasing fluid in the bowel. It’s a good idea to use it as little as is needed to keep the stool from getting uncomfortably hard. READERS: The booklet on constipation explains this common disorder and its treatments. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 504W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Reading Bookworm Grows With Books Reading is an important part of growing, and wintertime is the perfect season to snuggle indoors with kids and a book. Picture books, chapter books, there are so many waiting for all ages at the public library. The best part is that checking them out with your child’s own library card is free! Keep turning pages and talk about exciting stories with an activity that’s an incentive to keep family life full of reading. Make this growing bookworm ... or call it a reading caterpillar. It will motivate your young child to pick up a book, finish it and even give it some analytical thought. What a classic combination! Plus, it’s a creative bookish idea to sharpen minds and reading skills. Find a lightweight plastic ball with holes in it, such as a whiffle ball. This will be the bookworm’s head. Decorate one half of it to create the face by gluing on felt and buttons; twist pipe cleaners through holes for whimsical features. Now, tie a 38-inch length of string to the opposite half through one of the holes in the ball. The bookworm’s body will grow along the string. After you and your child read a book, cover the outside of a bathroom tissue tube or paper-towel tube cut in half with colored paper or paint, then add pictures cut from magazines or make original drawings that represent the characters and theme of the book. Was it about dinosaurs? Take a crayon and draw a Tyrannosaurus rex. Was it about a little boy who couldn’t fall asleep? Draw a teddy bear or pillow and press on sticker stars in the night. Write the title and author by the decor. Slide the string through the first decorated tube so that the tube touches the ball. As books are read, add more tubes, one after the other, and watch the bookworm grow. You’ll be feeding it books. How healthy! Display on a shelf or table. Extra tip: If you have an avid reader in the family, suggest that for every two or three tubes he adds to the bookworm, he might read a book to his younger sister and help her create a new collection of tubes of her own. This will be a reminder to him that growing the bookworm is a joint family effort. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. It’s On You, Jed York In October 2010, after a close loss to Philadelphia, ESPN’s Adam Schefter received not so much a text as a bold proclamation. The message was from Jed York, the 30-year-old CEO of the 0-5 San Francisco 49ers, and it simply stated “We’re going to win the division.” The message was ridiculed. The 49ers under Mike Singletary -- a head coach who mooned his team -- looked to be careening out of control, far removed from the stately grace of Bill Walsh or precision play the team used to execute under Joe Montana, Steve Young, Jerry Rice and Roger Craig. Making bold predictions doesn’t make them smart or learned takes on a situation ... it just makes them bold. I went into a new diner and the menu was typed out in bold comic sans, it didn’t help the meatloaf one bit. The 49ers would almost pull it off though, but York’s star didn’t rise along with it ... in fact, it probably only exacerbated the problems to come. Unlike his very well-respected father, John York, one of the country’s foremost cancer researchers and great philanthropist, Jed fit the mold of the rich kid who didn’t earn his spot ... the kid born on the opponent’s one-yard line who thinks he just ran back a kickoff for 99 yards. He had a BA from Notre Dame, he was captain of his high-school baseball team, but he spent only one year in the work force before his family brought him into the family business, owning one of the premier franchises in sports. The turnaround occurred when Jim Harbaugh took over the reins. Harbaugh, a fierce competitor and brilliant football mind with the abrasive personality to match, took the team to a Super Bowl. Allegedly, Harbaugh and Jed clashed behind the scenes, and Harbaugh had insulted him in front of the team. Apparently unable to stomach the slight, Jed took every opportunity to point out shortcomings in Harbaugh’s game plan. Harbaugh left for Michigan after being fired amid a slew of stories that were obviously leaked by Jed and then-49ers GM Trent Maalke. There would be some who would (wrongly) point out parallels between him and George Steinbrenner III. George used to love talking about how he was captain of the high-school football team. He too was keen on firing coaches and leaking damaging information to the press. The comparison stops there, as Steinbrenner had true business acumen and after a fan revolt, mellowed enough to find the right set of winners. After firing Chip Kelly, an uncharacteristically brazen press started asking Jed questions about his future as CEO. Fans and columnists in the Bay Area alike are calling for his removal, a move that would seem likely if the team plans on getting any head coach with substance to take over the job and carry the once-great team back to the heights of success. NO NEWS... JUST FUN, FACTS AND TRIVIA!

No-Fail Browning and Braising In the heart of winter, nothing satisfies more than a mouthwatering stew, chili or ragout with rich, succulent meat. Follow these steps for nofail browning and braising: CHOOSE A HEAVY-BOTTOMED DUTCH OVEN or skillet for best browning. Make sure it has a tight-fitting lid to keep in steam when simmering. PAT MEAT DRY WITH PAPER TOWELS to remove excess moisture. SEASON MEAT JUST BEFORE COOKING to help prevent it from releasing its natural juices. ADD MEAT IN SMALL BATCHES (a pound or less at a time) to hot oil over high heat. Do not overcrowd the pan. It will cause meat to steam instead of allowing it to brown. BE PATIENT: Allow meat to turn deep brown on all sides, caramelizing the proteins and sugars. (You may need to reduce heat if bottom of pan becomes too dark.) ADD LIQUID TO MEAT IN PAN and heat to boiling, scraping bottom of pan with spoon to release browned bits. COVER PAN AND BRAISE MIXTURE over low heat on top of range or place in oven at moderate temperature (325 F to 350 F) to cook. Do not allow mixture to boil -- it will toughen and dry out the meat. CHECK FOR DONENESS: When meat is tender, a fork will slip easily in and out of it. For thousands of triple-tested recipes, visit our website at www.goodhousekeeping.com/ recipes/. Where to Live in Retirement

Call or text 740-441-7633

SAUNDERS INSURANCE AGENCY

Where’s the best place to retire? In your state or hometown, or right where you are? The answer might not even be in the United States. The 2015 Global AgeWatch Index is an eye-opener. First on the list is Switzerland as the best place for older people to live. It was followed by Norway, Sweden and Germany. So where on the list is the United States? Number nine, right behind Iceland and Japan. Some of the typical warm-weather retiree countries ranked as followed: Spain (25), Costa Rica (28) and Thailand (34). Each country was ranked on 13 areas, consolidated into four key points: enabling environments, income security, health status and personal capability. Yet the whole story about a country might depend on which list you read. For example, while the Global AgeWatch Index ranks Australia at No. 17, another less-scientific study ranks it in fifth place. And the Costa Rica in 28th place becomes the No. 1 spot in another list. If you’re searching online for information about retirement locations, beware. Consider the source of the information. Read the fine print. If kudos go to a country because it has an easy visa and residency process, that doesn’t tell you what it will be like once you live there. If a “study” was written by an investment company telling you what your likely monthly costs will be, that’s fine, but it doesn’t tell you about the quality of life and health care. Panama, coming in at No. 20 on the AgeWatch Index, gets high marks on another list because those who can prove a $1,000 monthly income are given discounts on entertainment and phone bills. For more information on the AgeWatch Index, go online to www.helpage.org/global-agewatch. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

The goal of the VA Crisis Line is to be available 24/7 to veterans who are in crisis and are suicidal. The hotline serves an important link in connecting veterans with Suicide Prevention Coordinators in each VA Medical Center. The stats are impressive. The Crisis Line began with 14 responders and two health-care technicians manning four phones at a New York VA medical center. Since they began in 2007, responders have: --Answered 2.6 million calls. --Sent emergency services to 67,000 locations after crisis calls. --Forwarded 425,000 referrals to suicide prevention coordinators, ensuring continuity of care. --Talked to 314,000 veterans or family members in the website chat option. --Answered 63,000 text messages since that option began in 2011. By the end of 2016, crisis calls are automatically transferred to the hotline if the veteran (or family member) calls the local VA medical center and presses 7 during the automatic greeting. The biggest bonus of crisis-line expansion: The VA is almost to its goal of having zero calls forwarded to a contract responder when lines are busy. It’s also down to roughly nine seconds to have a veteran speak to trained personnel. The number for the National Suicide Prevention Hotline is 1-800-273-TALK (8255). Veterans press 1 to reach the VA responders. For text messages, call 838255. On the website use the chat feature to talk with someone immediately. Meanwhile, to be prepared in case you ever know someone who needs the information, check out the website at www.veteranscrisisline.net. See what features and information it has. Maybe even take the Self-Check quiz. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
