TIDBITS® DIGS FOR GOLD by Janet Spencer

Gold and copper were the first metals to be discovered by humans around 5000 B.C. It’s been estimated that 75% of all gold in circulation has been extracted since 1910. Come along with Tidbits as we dig for gold! SOLID GOLD • Gold melts at 1947° F (1064° C). It can conduct both heat and electricity and it never rusts or tarnishes. It cannot be destroyed by air, water, or fire, but it can be melted and mixed with other metals. • Gold is so pliable that it can be made into sewing thread. An ounce of gold (28 g) can be stretched over 50 miles (80 km). The thinnest man-made filament is gold thread only 4 microns wide. By comparison, a spider’s silk is only 1 micron wide. • Gold is more malleable than any other metal. An ounce of gold can be beaten into a sheet of gold leaf that covers 300 square feet and is only 1/200,000 of an inch thick. • A cubic foot of gold weighs 1,204 lbs. (546 kg). The only heavier metal is platinum. • Carat with a C is a measure of the size of gemstones, but karat with a K measures the purity of gold: 24 karat is pure gold, which is soft enough that it can be easily molded by hand.

(continued next page) GOLD MINES • A single 300-mile (482 km) long ridge called the Rand in South Africa has yielded nearly half of all the gold that’s ever been mined. • In the rich South African gold fields, three tons of ore yield 1 ounce (28 g) of gold. • The bottom of the Mponeng Mine in South Africa is one of the deepest point humans have reached beneath the land surface. The gold mine is 2.5 miles (4 km) deep. The average temperature of the rocks on the Earth’s crust is 55°F (13° C) but at the bottom of the mine, they are 140°F (60° C). Its 236 miles (379 km) of tunnels are longer than the New York subway system. At the bottom of this pit is a seam of ore about 30 inches (76 cm) wide. About 4,000 people work there. GOLDEN WORDS • The word “gold” evolved from the ancient word “ghel” or “ghol” meaning yellow, bright, or shiny. • The chemical symbol for gold is Au, from the Latin word “aurum” meaning “shining dawn.” This is the same root word that gave Aurora, the goddess of dawn, her name. • When the Gauls attacked Rome in 390 B.C., they were about to sack the temple where the treasure was stored when honking geese alerted the Romans. The treasure was saved. The grateful Roman citizens built a shrine to Moneta, the goddess of warning. The word “moneta” gave us our word “money.” • When U.S. banks first started printing paper bank notes, they could be redeemed for actual gold, leading to the phrase “as good as gold.” ALL THE GOLD IN FORT KNOX How much gold is in Fort Knox? The entire stockpile now weighs 147.3 million troy ounces, which is worth about $130 billion at today’s

Owner Wants Cat Back

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Two years ago, my husband and I took in a beautiful orange cat, “Tiger,” when a friend became too ill to care for him. We weren’t sure we wanted a pet -- I suffer from dander and dust allergies -- but we decided to give it a try. We picked him up on Christmas Eve at the airport after he was flown from Atlanta, a wide-eyed, meowing, anxious ball of fur. As soon as we got home he shot out from the carrier and under the sofa, where he hid for almost three weeks, sneaking out at night to eat and use the litter box. Tiger gradually got used to his new home, and we got used to him, and now we can’t imagine life without him. He’s the best Christmas present we’ve ever received. Here’s the problem: Our friend has recovered and wants Tiger back, but I can’t bear to let him go. What would you suggest? -Charles H., Dallas

DEAR CHARLES: We become more deeply attached to our pets than we realize, often grieving more when we lose them than we do for many humans. Returning a pet to its original owner can be emotionally difficult. I have friends who actually worked out a joint custody agreement, with a visitation schedule for their dogs after their relationship ended. It sounds like Tiger’s owner also loves and misses him, and because you’re halfway across the country, there’s a good chance you would never see Tiger again. But if you know he will be going to an equally loving and caring home, and the original promise was to be only temporary caregivers while your friend battled a tough illness ... well, you know the answer. GOLD NUGGETS In 1983, a Brazilian prospector found a 137-pound (62 kg) nugget that contained a million dollars worth of gold. The largest gold nugget ever found was found in Australia in 1869. The nugget is 10 by 25 inches and yielded 140 lbs. (64 kg) of pure gold. It was found buried under just two inches of dirt. SOLID GOLD According to the legend, King Hiero II wanted to have his old gold crown melted down and made into a new crown. However, he was afraid that the jeweler hired to do the work would cut the pure gold with a less expensive metal such as silver. The crown would still weigh the same; it would still look like pure gold; but the jeweler would be making off with a chunk of royal gold for free. The king asked Greek scientist Archimedes how he would be able to tell if the jeweler stole gold from the royal crown. Archimedes pondered the question for some time. Then, he decided to take a bath. As he got into the over-filled tub, some water splashed on the floor. That’s when he realized that a body immersed in fluid loses weight equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces— an important law of physics. He knew that by weighing the amount of water displaced by the crown both before and after it was re-worked, he could tell if the gold had been adulterated. He became so excited that he allegedly rushed naked into the streets of Syracuse, Sicily, shouting “Eureka!” which means “I have found it!” The crown was weighed, the jeweler did steal some gold— and he paid for it with his life. IT’S A FACT The world pours more steel in an hour than it has poured gold since the beginning of recorded history.

Tidbits® Full of Fun, Facts & Trivia! Owl Cast-Iron Bank Q: I have an owl cast-iron bank. When a coin in inserted, the owl turns its head and then deposits it inside the bank. It was purchased in Pennsylvania sometime after the Civil War. Other than that, I know nothing more about it. I have been offered $500 for it. It is in excellent condition -- not mint, but close. – Art, Scottsdale, Arizona A: Your bank was patented in 1880, designed by James H. Bowen of Philadelphia and manufactured by J & E Stevens & Company of Cromwell, Connecticut. Your bank is valued in the $200-$2,500 range depending on condition, according to “The Official Guide of Mechanical Banks,” by Dan Morphy and published by House of Collectibles books. Although mechanical banks are fascinating, buyers should be aware that reproductions have flooded the market. Some have been “aged” to suggest they are both old and authentic. These fakes often are made in Asia and sometimes can fool even antique dealers. *** Q: My dad was a Marine and served in Vietnam during the war. He recently gave me his collection from the war, including his uniform, dog tags, a Ka-Bar fighting knife, his cargo field pack, a signaling mirror and an assortment of paper items. Although I have

no plans to part with anything, I would like to know current values. -- Ben, Northridge, Ohio A: Collectors are just now focusing on items from the Vietnam War. Because of this increased interest, prices have soared. For example, a man’s camouflage combat uniform, lightweight and wind-resistant cotton poplin, is now valued in the $200-$350 range, more than four times what the same garment would have sold for just 10 years ago. I suggest you get a copy of “Vietnam War Collectibles,” by David Doyle. It documents and values artillery, clothing, helmets, publications, tools, gear, currency and even war trophies, illustrated with more than 1,000 images in full color. *** Q: I have a 78-rpm recording of the 1905 graduating class of the U.S. Naval Academy singing “Anchors Aweigh.” Is it valuable? -Benjamin, Lusby, Md. A: I contacted several serious collectors, and they agreed that your recording is worth in the $10 to $15 range, depending, of course, on condition. * It was award-winning American novelist Ann Patchett who made the following sage observation: “The question is whether or not you choose to disturb the world around you, or if you choose to let it go on as if you had never arrived.” * The world’s smallest city block can be found in the small town of Dothan, Alabama. Bordered by Appletree, College and Troy streets, the block was once home to a single two-story building measuring 38 feet long and 27 feet wide. * Most Americans are familiar with graham crackers -- they’re a favorite childhood snack. But have you ever wondered what they’re made of? The obvious answer is “graham flour” -- but what is that? It’s just flour made from whole wheat. This type of flour was named after a 19-century Presbyterian minister named Sylvester Graham, who promoted the snack as a digestive aid and a cure for alcoholism. * You might be surprised to learn that, although Charles Goodyear received a patent for vulcanized rubber in 1844, the Maya were creating objects with rubber 3,000 years before that.

* The quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) is the most widely distributed tree in North America (as well as the state tree of Utah). Groves of them can be found in high altitudes as far south as Guanajuato, Mexico, and as far north as the Brooks Range of mountains in northern Alaska. Most people don’t realize, however, that the groves are not made up of separate trees; all the visible trunks are part of a single organism, genetically identical and sharing the same root system. *** Thought for the Day: “The greatest happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved -- loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of ourselves.” -- Victor Hugo (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

This is in spite of the fact that there is about four million times more iron than gold in the crust of the Earth. This is largely due to the fact that iron reacts with other substances and combines with them to form mineral ores, which are difficult to separate. Gold does not easily combine with other elements in the ground and can be plucked from the gravel in its pure form, if only you know where to look. • Gold is too soft for making tools and it is inordinately heavy. However, it is a highly unreactive metal, so it is impervious to corrosion from gases in the air. Silver tarnishes because it reacts with airborne sulphur; copper turns green because it reacts with oxygen and carbon dioxide; iron rusts because it reacts with oxygen. But gold does none of these things; its surface is inert. MOTHER LODES • John Sutter owned property on which gold was found which started the California Gold Rush in 1849. He was a wealthy man already when the gold was found, but hordes of people moved onto his property, ruining it, and he could not get them to leave. Then the government seized his property on a technicality, and he died in poverty. In the first 10 years after the California gold rush began at Sutter’s Mill, California produced more than half a billion dollars worth of gold, almost 35 times the amount the U.S. had paid to Mexico for the Western lands. • Farmer Simon Drake of England was preparing his field for planting when he unearthed a strange golden coin. He looked it up in a book of ancient coins and discovered it was a gold noble dating back to the 1400s. A subsequent search turned up 94 more coins in his field. In May of 1985 they were auctioned for some $100,000.

Amazing Plants POISON IVY • Poison ivy causes an allergic reaction because the sap contains an oily substance called urushiol. Other plants that also contain urushiol include poison oak and poison sumac. • The word “urushiol” comes from the Japanese word “urushi” meaning lacquer because the toxic sap can be refined to make a very durable and beautiful lacquer. • You’d think that poison ivy contains urushiol as a defensive measure, but in fact the substance merely helps the plant retain water and it just so happens that it’s also an allergen. • You cannot get a rash from simply brushing against poison ivy; you must come into contact with the sap of the plant caused when leaves and stems are damaged, due to cutting the plant, picking the leaves, crushing the stems, and so forth. • Urushiol enters the skin so quickly that a person has only ten minutes after exposure to wash it off in order to prevent a rash from forming. The rash usually shows up within 48 hours of exposure. • It takes just a billionth of a gram of urushiol to cause a rash. A mere quarter ounce of the stuff would be enough to cause a rash on every person on Earth. And the amount that could fit on the head of a pin would be enough to cause a rash on 500 people. • About 85% of people are allergic to urushiol. Exposure to urushiol causes more cases of dermatitis than is caused by all other plant species combined. • Often people will fail to develop a rash after their first exposure to poison ivy, through the rash tends to grow progressively worse with each successive exposure. • It’s found throughout North America and Asia though it does not grow well in arid regions or high altitudes. LEAD

• The chemical symbol for lead, Pb, comes from the Latin word for the element, plumbum. This is where we get our word plumbing because early water pipes were made of lead, a factor which may have hastened the fall of the Roman Empire. Bones from Roman graves reveal excessive concentrations of lead. Wine was stored in lead containers to prevent souring, and Romans also ate from lead dishes. • Ancient Romans aside, modern man has lead levels in the bone that are 200 times higher than pre-industrial revolution ancestors. • Lead is not needed by the body, yet it is difficult to flush out. The people most vulnerable to lead poisoning are pregnant women and their fetuses, children, and people with high blood pressure. • The most dangerous occupations concerning lead are welder, smelter worker, and battery manufacturer. • Lead in the environment remains toxic forever. • A study done by the University of Pittsburgh Medical School tested 1st and 2nd graders in Boston. It showed that the lowest academic scores went to the children with the highest levels of lead. Children with higher levels were four times more likely to have IQ scores below average, and 7 times more likely to suffer learning disabilities. When the same kids were tested 5 and 11 years later, those with higher lead levels still suffered IQ deficits. • Low levels cause tiredness, moodiness, headaches, stomach problems, and insomnia. Moderate levels cause aching, weakness, and concentration problems. High levels cause kidney and brain damage. (cont’d)

LEAD (cont’d) Effects of even minor lead poisoning are irreversible. Prevention is everything. Lead’s half-life in human bones is 2030 years, meaning that if a young girl is exposed, it will still be in her body when she enters child-bearing years. Lead will cross the placenta. Children who absorb lead in the womb perform significantly worse on developmental tests in their first 2 years of life than those with no exposure. Studies show that women who work with lead in factories suffer higher rates of miscarriage, premature birth, birth defects, and sterility. Lead is absorbed by breathing; drinking; eating; or smoking cigarettes with traces of lead on the fingers. It can also be absorbed through the skin. 30% of the lead you inhale will be absorbed into your body, but only 10% of lead you swallow will be absorbed-unless you’re a kid. Children will absorb 50% of lead that enters the digestive tract. Since lead additives were removed from most gasoline in 1976, the level of lead in our bloodstreams has been dropping. Between 1976 and 1980, blood lead levels were reduced by a third simply because Americans were no long breathing lead-impregnated exhaust fumes. The use of lead-based paints for homes, children’s toys and household furniture has been banned in the United States since 1978. But lead-based paint is still on walls and woodwork in many older homes and apartments. Most lead poisoning in children results from eating lead-based paint chips. Lead pipes, and copper pipes soldered with lead can release lead particles into tap water.

By Keith Roach, M. D, Irritable Bowel Disease, Syndrome Very Different DEAR DR. ROACH: Could you please explain the difference between irritable bowel syndrome and irritable bowel disease? What is the treatment for each? I saw in a health magazine that there is a blood test to determine which one someone may have. -- ES ANSWER: Although the two names are very similar, the conditions are very different. Irritable bowel syndrome is a common condition, more frequent in women than in men, of abdominal discomfort and bowel changes, such as diarrhea and/ or constipation. It is managed by diet (such as the low-FODMAP diet I have recommended several times), stress management and sometimes medications. It can cause significant changes in one’s social life, in addition to pain and discomfort. IBS is a clinical diagnosis, and there is no blood test to confirm it. Primary-care doctors manage IBS, and severe cases may benefit from the care of a gastroenterologist. Irritable bowel disease -- of which there are two types: ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease -- is a potentially life-threatening condition of the GI tract. In ulcerative colitis, there is inflammation that’s limited to the colon, whereas in Crohn’s disease, the inflammation can be in any part of the GI tract, from the lip to the anus, though it is most frequent in the far end of the small bowel and the colon. IBD should be managed by a gastroenterologist, preferably one with special expertise in these diseases. IBD usually is diagnosed by colonoscopy or other endoscopy with biopsy. Many blood tests can be abnormal in IBD, but only the pathologist’s report is definitive. Most people with IBD will need medication treatment, although symptoms and therefore treatment may change dramatically across time. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 83 and recently began having sciatica pain down my right thigh. My doctor recommended using a hot-water bottle. Are there any painkillers I can use? Are there any other products I can use? -- G.L.B. ANSWER: The sciatic nerve is a very large nerve that runs down the back of the leg. When the nerve is pressed on in the back -- from a herniated disk in the back or from spinal stenosis -- there can be intense pain that feels like it is coming from the back, or anywhere from the top of the thigh to the foot. Since other nerves besides the sciatic can be affected, the condition is called lumbar radiculopathy. A herniated disk is when the shock-absorbing material in between the vertebrae comes out into the space where the nerve root is, on its way out of the spinal column toward the leg. Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the bony canal through which the nerve travels. In most cases, people get better within four to six weeks. Standard pain medications, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen, can be helpful. If pain is severe and not responsive, there are other treatments, including a short course of steroids and narcotics, which should be given only during that initial period of pain. Pain that persists for a longer period of time, or pain with weakness, especially with progressive symptoms, needs expert evaluation. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. A Toast to Toast “I’d like to make a toast!” said my friend at a happy family celebration. Without missing a beat, her 3-year-old nephew burst out, “Don’t we need to get the toaster first?” With all the toasting to 2016, I thought I’d get literal and stretch the meaning, just like that spontaneous child, and welcome this new year with two recipes using toast. So, “Here’s a toast to toast!” AVOCADO TOAST I keep a stash of avocados in different stages of ripeness on my kitchen counter, never knowing when I’ll need one to slice on a bed of fresh greens, or mash, season and spread on toast for a tasty morning energy boost. I’ve been making the latter for years, so no wonder I was surprised while whiling away time on Instagram, to find that avocado toast was trending. Here’s how to prepare “Avocado Toast” for two: Peel and pit a ripe avocado. Mash in a bowl with a fork, leaving some chunks. Add a pinch of sea salt and juice from half of a lemon. Toast two slices of your favorite bread. Spread half of the mixture on each slice, and garnish with some red pepper flakes and a drizzle of good olive oil (optional). Tips: Get creative by topping the spread mixture with chopped cooked bacon and goat cheese, salsa and crushed tortilla chips, or cracked pepper, sliced cherry tomatoes and basil. EGG IN A HOLE Create memorable family traditions with your kids and grandkids, starting at breakfast with this whimsical presentation of eggs and toast. Some families call it “Toad in the Hole” or “Bird in a Nest” -- the list goes on. It’s really nothing more than an egg cooked in the cutout center of a piece of pan-made toast, but it’s the off-kilter presentation that fancies it up. Here’s how to make one “Egg in a Hole”: Use a 2-inch circle biscuit cutter or similar size metal cookie cutter to cut out the center of a slice of bread. In a well-buttered pan, toast one side of the slice and cut-out piece for about 1 1/2 minutes. Flip. Add more butter to the pan. Crack egg in the open center of the slice. Cover pan and cook slowly until whites are set and yoke thickens, about 3 1/2 to 4 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Serve with the toasted cutout. Pair with bacon or sausage. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Rest In Peace, Craig Much smarter men and women than me have addressed the subject, but it never makes sense that so often those among us who seem to have the most life are taken away from us too soon. Craig Sager will no doubt be remembered for his striking attire, but it would be such a shame if all we remember about this great sportscaster was his taste in ties. He now joins the ranks of the immortals, another victim to cancer, another life that seemed to end too suddenly, and the void left is far too noticeable for his family, his friends, and in this case, the fans. In the end, Sager gave his own eulogy, and it is something that bears repeating. Rest in peace, Craig. “When you are diagnosed with a terminal disease like cancer, leukemia, your perception of time changes. When doctors tell you have three weeks to live, do you try to live a lifetime of moments in three weeks? Or do you say, ‘To hell with three weeks?’ When doctors tell you your only hope of survival is 14 straight days of intense chemotherapy, 24 hours a day, do you sit there and count down the 336 hours? Or do you see each day as a blessing? Time is something that cannot be bought. It cannot be wagered with God. And it is not an endless supply. Time is simply how you live your life. “I’m not an expert on time, or on cancer, or on life itself. I’m a kid from the small Illinois town of Batavia, who grew up on the Chicago Cubs, and made sports his life’s work, although there’s never been a day where it actually seemed like work. I have run with the bulls in Pamplona. I have raced with Mario Andretti in Indianapolis. I have climbed the Great Wall of China. I have jumped out of airplanes over Kansas. I have wrestled gators in Florida. I have sailed the ocean with Ted Turner. I have swam the oceans in the Caribbean. And I have interviewed Gregg Popovich. Mid-game. Spurs down seven. “If I’ve learned anything through all of this, it’s that each and every day is a canvas, waiting to be painted -- an opportunity for love, for fun, for living, for learning. To those of you out there who are suffering from cancer, facing adversity, I want you to know that your will to live and to fight cancer can make all the difference in the world. The way you think influences the way you feel, and the way you feel determines how you act.” Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

My husband was able to remove the remnants of the handle and smooth it down. We sealed the broken parts, and I use it as an eyeglasses holder on my desk.” -- J.J. in Florida * Hang measuring cups in size order on the inside of your cabinet door. You will always know where to find the right-size measure, and it makes use of unused space. Just be sure you’re gentle when opening and closing the door.

this neat trick: Place a wide rubber band over the screw head. Use the type that are found on a bunch of broccoli. The rubber will fill in the cracks, and give your screwdriver a lot more grip. * “Store matches in a mason jar. Cut a piece of extra-fine sandpaper to fit the jar lid. Lay the sandpaper grit-side up in the lid so that you can use it to light the match. Decorate with cute ribbon if you like. Perfect for fireplaces!” -- S.L. in Minnesota Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

Ham and Cheese Pitas The whole family will love these tasty sandwiches -- they make a nice meal with any hearty winter soup.

* On Jan. 13, 1842, a British army doctor reaches the British sentry post at Jalalabad, Afghanistan, the lone survivor of a 16,000-strong Anglo-Indian expeditionary force that was massacred in the Khyber Pass in its retreat from Kabul.

2 (6-inch diameter) pitas 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 8 slices (about 4 ounces) cooked ham, thin 2 ounces (1/2 cup) Jarlsberg light cheese 1. Heat oven to 475 F. Slice each pita horizontally in half, and place cut-side up on large cookie sheet. 2. Spread 1/2 teaspoon mustard on each pita half. Top each with 2 slices ham and 2 tablespoons cheese. Bake 5 minutes or until cheese melts and pitas are toasted. Cut each sandwich in half to serve. Makes 4 servings.

* On Jan. 10, 1901, a drilling derrick near Beaumont, Texas, produces an enormous gusher of crude oil. The oil was found at a depth of over 1,000 feet and flowed at a rate of 100,000 barrels a day. * On Jan. 14, 1942, President Franklin Roosevelt issues Proclamation No. 2537, requiring aliens from World War II-enemy countries -- Italy, Germany and Japan -- to register with the Department of Justice. Under increasing pressure from California politicians and others, Roosevelt also signed an executive order to remove all Japanese Americans to internment camps.

* Each serving: 150 calories, 5g total fat (2g saturated), 17mg cholesterol, 675mg sodium, 19g total carbohydrate, 11g protein. For thousands of triple-tested recipes, visit our Web site at www.goodhousekeeping.com/ recipes/.

* On Jan. 15, 1967, at the Los Angeles Coliseum, the Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs in the first-ever world championship football game. Since postseason college games were known as “bowl” games, it was suggested that the new AFL/NFL pro championship be called the “Super Bowl.”

* On Jan. 9, 1972, the ship Seawise University (formerly the RMS Queen Elizabeth) burns and sinks in Hong Kong Harbor. The Queen Elizabeth, launched in 1938, served as ocean liner and troop transport before being sold to a Hong Kong businessman who wanted to use the ship as a floating college. * On Jan. 11, 1989, after eight years as president of the United States, Ronald Reagan gives his farewell address. Reagan declared that the key to leadership was a return to “common sense.” * On Jan. 12, 1995, Qubilah Shabazz, the daughter of Malcolm X, is arrested for conspiring to kill Louis Farrakhan, who she believed was responsible for the assassination of her father in 1965.

SAUNDERS INSURANCE AGENCY

Medicare Welcome vs. Wellness Visits Tose who are new to Medicare have to sort out a lot of information in a hurry. One area of confusion is the difference between the Welcome to Medicare doctor visit and the annual Wellness Visit. You get the Welcome visit once, in the first 12 months of your enrollment in Medicare. You get the annual Wellness visit a year later and every year after that. What to expect from your Welcome visit: Counseling, mostly. Your weight, exercise, diet, current drugs, blood pressure, possible depression, general physical condition, family medical history and more will be discussed in a 45-minute visit. They might do a basic vision test and a body mass index. A plan will be provided for screenings, shots or tests. The Wellness visit doesn’t cost you anything. If you’re expecting a full physical at that time, you won’t get it. Your annual Wellness visit: You qualify for this appointment if you’ve had Part B for longer than 12 months. You’ll have to fill out a health-risk questionnaire as a means for the medical staff to develop a prevention plan for you. If you have the Original Medicare, you won’t pay anything for the annual exam, unless additional tests are performed at the same time and those tests aren’t covered. Some of those tests that might be requested include prostate cancer, HIV, colorectal cancer, cardiovascular disease, breast cancer, diabetes and glaucoma. Certain tests and screenings are free. Be sure to ask for the FREE Medicare Wellness visit ... not a physical. If you end up with a full physical (depending how you ask for the appointment), thinking it’s a free Wellness visit, you could well be charged for various tests. On the other hand, if you do want a full head-to-toe physical, be specific because you won’t get it at the Wellness visit either. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

When family members of a veteran getting medical treatment need to travel to be at his or her side, the expenses can be prohibitive, especially when you add in places to stay. To help ease that burden, the Department of Veterans Affairs is now adding 14 Fisher Houses across the country. The Fisher House Foundation has built (and donated to the VA) 31 Fisher Houses and given 40 more to the Department of Defense. Each site contains eight to 21 suites, with a dining room, kitchen, library and living room, plus a resident manager on site. Fisher Houses are always located near medical centers and offer accommodation to families at no cost. In 2016, Fisher Houses saved 23,000 families more than $3 million when they came to stay at one of the 71 current locations. The foundation also provides Hotels for Heroes rooms in locations where there is no Fisher House. The new locations will be in the Bronx and Montrose, New York; New Orleans; Kansas City; Ann Arbor, Michigan; White River Junction, Vermont; Huntington, West Virginia; Columbia, South Carolina; Columbia, Missouri; Perry Point, Maryland and Shreveport, Louisiana. Second locations will be created in Bay Pines, Florida; Richmond, Virginia and San Antonio. Veterans aren’t the only ones who get help. Wounded, injured and ill service members who are about to get treatment at a VA medical center can get help with transportation. Hero Miles gives round-trip airfare to both the service members heading for treatment and their families, thanks to frequent flyer miles donated by the public. Check the Hero Miles link on the Fisher House website: www. fisherhouse.org. So far, Hero Miles has provided 63,000 tickets. Check the website if you can donate money, frequent flyer miles or hotel points, or call 888294-8560.
