America’s favorite children’s program premiered on PBS on November 10, 1969. In observance of Sesame Street Day, Tidbits passes along the facts on this long-running series, now in its 46th season. • A dinner party at the home of television documentary producer Joan Ganz Cooney in 1966 got the ball rolling toward a new children’s educational program. She and her guests discussed statistics showing that the average preschool child was watching 27 hours of television a week, much of which was considered too violent. Cooney conceived the idea of helping these preschoolers prepare for the classroom, teaching them the alphabet and how to count in an entertaining way. In addition, the program taught basic life skills, such as proper hygiene, healthy eating habits, self-control, dealing with low self-esteem, and crossing the street safely. Cross-cultural friendships were prominent, as well as roles for the disabled, the young, senior citizens, and actors of all ethnicities, all demonstrating “peace and harmony.” • Joan Cooney hired puppeteer Jim Henson to create the cast of Sesame Street characters. Henson, who had founded Muppets, Inc. in 1958 at the age of 22, was more than a puppeteer. turn the page for more!

SESAME STREET (continued): • Jim Henson was an artist, cartoonist, inventor, screenwriter, composer, musician, director, and producer as well. He signed on from the inception and spent the next 20 years with the series, until his sudden death at age 53 from streptococcal toxic shock syndrome. • After just one season, the Educational Testing Service reported that children who regularly watched Sesame Street scored higher on tests than occasional viewers. Ten years after its premiere, 9 million American children under the age of six were watching the program every day, including 90% of children in lowincome, inner-city homes. • “Sesame Street” was based on a combination of streets in Harlem, the Bronx, and the upper West Side of New York City. Most of the action takes place around the address of 123 Sesame Street. • Original Sesame Street puppets were Big Bird, Kermit, Bert and Ernie, Oscar, Grover, and Cookie Monster. Others such as The Count, Elmo, Zoe, and Snuffleupagus came along in subsequent years. • Trash can dweller Oscar the Grouch was yellow, then orange during the first season, but was changed to his present green for Series Two. The explanation was that Oscar went on a holiday to “the very damp Swamp Mushy Muddy,” and came back permanently green. Oscar’s signature song is “I Love Trash.” His home is much larger on the inside that a typical trash can, and contains such luxuries as a swimming pool, ice rink, bowling alley, and piano beneath the surface. Oscar is performed by the same man behind Big Bird, Caroll Spinney, who says he got the idea for Oscar’s gruff voice from a Manhattan taxi driver who growled, “Where to, Mac?”

Picking the Perfect Cat

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m really excited -- my mom has decided we can get a kitten! We’re going to adopt one from the local shelter. Do you have any advice on picking the best cat? -- Jaynah and Sherar in Poughkeepsie, New York DEAR JAYNAH AND SHERAR: First of all, congratulations! It’s exciting to get your first pet. And I’m glad you’re choosing to adopt from a shelter. While I’ve always liked to say that we don’t pick cats, they pick us, that’s not entirely true. Sometimes it takes a little time to find that perfect fit. With kittens, it’s even harder, because they’re almost universally cute. When you visit the shelter, ask if you’re allowed to play with the kittens before choosing one, or to observe them in a play area outside of their cages. Note how they

interact with each other and with humans. Are they confident or aggressive? Standoffish, or anxious and shy? Will they play with a toy or string that is dangled in front of them? Note the kittens’ general health. It’s easy to spot a potential problem if a cat is listless, won’t play, has visible sores, shakes its head frequently or has trouble walking. Most shelters are open about a cat’s known health problems. That way potential owners can decide if they want to take on the costs of bringing an adopted cat back to health. Again, take your time and don’t commit to one kitten immediately. If there are multiple shelters in the area, check them out as well. And of course, once you’ve found your new friend, be sure to schedule a checkup with a veterinarian to give it the healthiest start with your family. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

SESAME STREET (continued): • Caroll Spinney, 81, has been the puppeteer for Big Bird since Sesame Street’s inception. He stands inside the 8’2” (249 cm) bright yellow bird and extends his right arm above his head, with his arm acting as the neck, and his right hand as the beak. Spinney’s left hand is Big Bird’s left wing, which is attached to the right wing by a fishing line so that both wing’s move. Since he can’t see out, a tiny TV set is strapped to his chest. The suit weighs 10 lbs. (4.5 kg) , with the head weighing an additional 4 lbs. (1.8 kg). • What kind of a bird is Big Bird? One book about the series calls him a canary, although on an episode of Sesame Street, Big Bird himself said, “I’m more of a condor.” When appearing in the game show Hollywood Squares, the Bird called himself a lark, but a special 1983 broadcast of Sesame Street calls him an ibis. Whatever he is, he’s always flightless! • Bert and Ernie were designed to illustrate that two totally different characters can still be good friends. They were originally performed by Jim Henson and writer Jon Stone, with Bert and Ernie’s friendship symbolic of the truelife friendship between the two performers. • The Count, a vampire based on Count Dracula, was introduced in Season 4, and was intended to teach mathematical principles to children. He loves counting and counts everything! His favorite number is 34,969, which he calls a “square-root thing,” since that number is 187 squared. • One of the best-known songs from the series is “C is for Cookie,” first aired in 1972, and sung by the big, blue, growly-voiced Cookie Monster. Other favorites are Kermit the Frog’s “Bein’ Green” and Ernie’s “Rubber Duckie,” which enjoyed a stint on the Billboard Top 100 pop chart in 1970.

Jct. U.S. 35 and St. Rt. 327 • Jackson, OH 45640 740-288-9995 Art Deco Q: I have become fascinated by Art Deco after purchasing a cocktail set from the 1930s at a flea market in Chicago. Can you recommend a good general reference? -- Laura, Naperville, Illinois A: Judith Miller claims in her new book, “Art Deco: Living With the Art Deco Style,” that Art Deco completely transformed all branches of design, from the fine and decorative arts to transport, product design, fashion, graphic design and even architecture. The clean lines of Art Deco make it classic and timeless, and she points out what to look for as a collector. Miller is considered an expert of antiques and collectibles and frequently appears on television, both in America and the U.K. Her book explores all the key collecting areas with chapters on furniture, glass, ceramics, sculpture, metalwork, silver and jewelry, prints, posters, rugs and textiles. Miller’s handsome, lavishly illustrated book also features accurate, up-to-date pricing. Her book is published by Millers/Mitchell Beazley. This might be a good place to begin your exploration of Art Deco. *** Q: During the 1940s, I attended a Nelson Eddy concert in Springfield, Illinois, with my parents and brother. How can I find out the

date of the concert and approximate value of the autographed program I have? -- Betty, Decatur, Illinois A: You will have to become a detective to find the date of the concert. I suggest you begin your investigation by tracking down the microfilm of the newspapers published in Springfield at that time. Contact the venue where Eddy appeared to see if it has records of the event. Your signed program is worth about $25, according to several autograph dealers I contacted. *** Q: I have a small dish that I believe was made by the Powelton Cut Glass Company. What can you tell me about the company? -Barbara, Albuquerque, New Mexico A: The Powelton Cut Glass Company was established in Philadelphia in about 1910. During its first six or seven years, the company produced brilliant cut glass patterns on heavy blanks. After 1918, it focused on light cut wares and painted designs on glass, according to “Glass A to Z” by David J. Shotwell and published by Krause Books. * A fisherman in the Philippines recently revealed a treasure that he’d been keeping under his bed for 10 years: a 75-pound natural pearl with an estimated value of $100 million. Evidently, after finding the pearl in a giant clam, he decided to keep it as a good-luck charm. The “Pearl of Puerto,” as it’s known, blew the world record out of the water (pun intended). The previous record holder for largest natural pearl was the “Pearl of Lao-Tsu” (sometimes called the “Pearl of Allah”), which weighs in at a mere 14 pounds. * The female Jesus bird is the one in charge, it would seem. She controls her own territory, allowing several male birds to build nests within it. Then she lays eggs in all the nests, and the males incubate them. * Before the Beach Boys were the Beach Boys, they considered naming their band the Pendletons. * The name “toadstool” actually has nothing to do with toads. The word is derived from the German words “tod,” which means “death,” and “stuhl,” which means “stool.” *** Thought for the Day: “Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night.” -- Edgar Allan Poe (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com SESAME STREET (continued): • Sesame Street wasn’t Kermit the Frog’s first gig. The famous green puppet made his debut in 1955 on Jim Henson’s local television series Sam and Friends, which aired until 1961. Kermit is the only Muppet with a prominent role on both The Muppet Show and Sesame Street. Henson was Kermit’s puppeteer from 1955 until his death in 1990. Upon Henson’s death, the Sesame Workshop bought full ownership of Henson’s characters for $180 million; however, Kermit wasn’t part of the deal. The Tickle-Me-Elmo doll was a source of hundreds of millions of dollars for Sesame Workshop to help purchase the rights for the other Muppets. • A favorite human character on the series was the Fix-It Shop’s co-owner, Maria. Maria was played by Sonia Manzano, who joined the cast in 1971 at age 20 and remained until she retired in 2015. In addition to being nominated for two Emmy Awards for her performances, she won 15 Emmy’s as a Sesame Street writer. Other beloved humans have included Bob the music teacher, Linda the librarian (the first regular deaf character on television), schoolteacher Gordon, nurse Susan, and candy store owner Mr. Hooper. When Will Lee, the actor who played Mr. Hooper, passed away in 1982, rather than cast a new actor in the role, the producers used the opportunity to help young viewers understand death. • There have been more than 4,500 episodes of Sesame Street, and the series has won 116 Emmy Awards, more than any other program. It has been televised in more than 120 countries. About 8 million viewers tune in each week in the United States alone.

UNUSUAL ANIMALS: HUMMINGBIRDS This week, Tidbits is just humming along, taking a look at our tiny feathered friend, the hummingbird. • There are about 340 identified species of hummingbirds in the world, the second largest bird family. Yet they can only be found in the western hemisphere. Ecuador has the most hummingbirds of any country. Mexico is home to 50 different species, but only eight species are found in the U.S. They are not just found in warm climates -- three species are found in Canada, and certain types are even found in Alaska. • A ruby-throated hummingbird weighs about 3 grams. Compare this to the weight of a nickel at 4.5 grams. That’s about 150 birds to make one pound (0.45 kg)! The smallest bird in the world, the bee hummingbird, is about 2 inches (5 cm) long and weighs about 2.5 grams, about the same as a penny. Even the largest species, the giant hummingbird, is only 8.5 inches (21.6 cm) long. Yet their tiny size doesn’t affect their attitude. They are one of the most aggressive bird species, and will attack jays, crows, and hawks that intrude in their territory. • These tiny creatures can flap their wings as many as 200 times per second! They can fly at speeds up to 30 mph (48.2 km/h), and when diving, can reach double that speed. They are the only bird that can fly backwards. However, for all these amazing feats, the hummingbird can’t walk. Their pectoral chest muscles are so strong, they make up almost 30% of the bird’s body weight. • In order to collect nectar, hummingbirds do not suck the nectar through their long bills. Rather, they lick it at the rate of 10 to 15 times per second with forked tongues.

For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 HUMMINGBIRDS (continued): • The bird’s heart beats around 1,260 times per minute, and even at rest, its breathing rate is 250 breaths per minute. In order to support this incredibly high metabolism, the bird needs to eat up to eight times per hour. Each feeding session lasts less than a minute. The hummingbird will visit about 1,000 flowers per day to gather the sugary sweet nectar needed for their energy. But because the nectar is not a good source of other nutrients, the birds also dine on insects and spiders. • At night, when food is not readily available, hummingbirds enter a deep-sleep state similar to hibernation known as torpor. Their metabolism, heart, and breathing rates all dramatically slow down to preserve their energy levels. The heart, which normally beats during the daytime upwards of 1,200 times per minute, slows down to no more than 180 beats. • Hummingbirds have stunning colorful plumage, with about 1,000 to 1,500 feathers. Surprisingly, this is the least amount of feathers of any type of bird. The lower amount of feathers keeps them lightweight for their fast flight. • Most North American hummingbirds migrate south every autumn to spend the winter in Mexico, the Caribbean, or Central America. The 3-inch-long (7.6-cm) rufous hummingbird travels 3,900 miles (6,276 km) one way from Alaska to Mexico. • The lifespan of a hummingbird ranges from 5 to 12 years. • If you want hummingbirds to visit your garden, plant a collection of bright flowers that continuously bloom, including zinnias, bleeding hearts, lupine, columbine, petunias, and beebalm. You can also add a feeder containing a mixture that is one part sugar to four parts water.

PROUDLY MADE IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WITH AMERICAN MADE STEEL.

GUACAMOLE Since November 13 is National Spicy Guacamole Day, what better time to learn about its main ingredient, avocados! • It’s believed that guacamole was first created by the ancient Aztecs in present-day Mexico. The Aztec word ahuacamolli literally translates “avocado sauce.” Avocados, which are a fruit, not a vegetable, are native to Central and South America, and have been cultivated there for over 10,000 years. The avocado is also known as the “alligator pear,” because of its pear shape and rough skin. • Mexico produces more avocados than any other country. The state of California is in second place, with more than 7,000 avocado groves, with nearly 5,000 of those in San Diego County. Other large producers of the fruit are the Dominican Republic, Brazil, and Colombia. • While most of us think of avocados as guacamole or to serve in sandwiches or on toast, other countries prepare them quite differently. Folks in the Philippines, Brazil, Indonesia, and India make avocado milkshakes and serve them with ice cream. Another dessert drink in those countries is made of sugar, milk, chocolate syrup, and pureed avocado. Those in Morocco mix avocado, milk, powdered sugar, and orange flower water. • The avocado tree reaches a height of about 66 feet (20 m). A tree takes between four and six years to bear fruit, and when it does, it can produce anywhere between 150 and 500 avocados per year. The fruit is referred to as a climacteric fruit, which means it matures on the tree, but ripens off the tree. An avocado can remain on a tree for as long as 18 months. They are picked when they are hard and green, then kept in coolers until they reach their destination. Once picked, it takes between 7 and 10 days to ripen.

Online at www.lovemytidbits.com GUACAMOLE (continued): • Do you want to speed up the ripening process? Put your avocados in a paper bag with an apple. If you want to slow down the ripening, put it in the refrigerator. • There are several stages of ripeness and retailers can actually request differing stages. For example, avocados tender enough for guacamole are at Stage Five, and those considered “slice-ready” are classified as Stage Four. • Because all avocadoes are picked by hand, labor is a large cost for growers. A long pole with a clipper at the end and an attached pouch is used to harvest the fruit. • Once an avocado is peeled and cut, they will quickly turn brown. This is because of polyphenol oxidase in the fruit’s cells, which, when exposed to oxygen, produces an enzymatic reaction. This can be prevented by adding lime or lemon juice to your guacamole, or by wrapping tightly in clear plastic wrap. If it does oxidize, the solution is simple – Scrape off the brown layer, exposing the green guac underneath! • A mailman named Rudolph Hass discovered a variety of avocado growing in his back yard in the 1930s and patented the Hass variety in 1935, although it took until the 1970s before it became popular. It is now the most common avocado in the U.S. and the only one grown year round. That first tree is still alive and producing avocados today. • Because they are high in fat, avocados sometimes get a bad rap. But this is monounsaturated fat, the “good” kind of fat that may help lower cholesterol levels. They also have the highest protein content of any fruit, as well as being loaded with 975 mg of potassium. Compare this to the 487 mg found in a banana. One avocado also contains 81 mcg of the carotenoid lutein, which can reduce the risk of macular degeneration and cataracts.

By Keith Roach, M. D, Is Counting Calories ‘Old-School’ Dieting? DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 68-year-old man, 5-feet-10-inches tall and weighing 223 pounds. Last January, my weight was up to 247, so I decided to diet and exercise in order to lose the excess. My goal is to get below 200. In a recent visit to my physician, I told him that I was losing weight by restricting my total calories to 1,700 per day on a seven-day running average (so I can go out to eat once in a while). I am trying to keep my fats below 30 percent on a seven-day calorie basis, and I am trying to keep total carbs to 50 percent or so. My physician told me that my diet plan was “old-school.” He said that I should eliminate all sugars and all grains. I should eat a couple of ounces of meat and/or eggs. And I should eat as many fruits and vegetables as I want without worrying about calories. In your opinion, should I follow his advice, or should I continue with what has been working for me? -- J.B. ANSWER: Your physician is right that counting calories is “old-school.” However, if you can stay with it, it will work. If you expend more calories than you take in, you will lose weight. That is the energy balance equation, and there are no exceptions. However, the issue isn’t so straightforward as you might think from that statement. Fat and protein make almost everybody feel more full and satisfied, comparing meals of the same calories, than a high-carbohydrate meal. Plain, fresh fruits and vegetables, absent of dips or sauces that load on the calories, are low in calories, in most cases, and can be eaten in relatively large amounts without slowing weight loss much. I also agree with your physician that simple sugars and processed grains add calories without a lot of real nutrition and don’t fill you up much (and may even make you hungrier later). I don’t think all grains need to be avoided: The fiber present in whole grains also improves satiety, and I recommend that all grains be whole grains. However, some people find that eliminating grain entirely helps them. By all means, you can stick with what works for you. That being said, most people find that by adding a little healthy protein and fat, you can stick with your eating plan with less hunger or discomfort. Losing weight can make people feel a little uncomfortable. But I think you will find that the eating plan he outlined, while still keeping an eye on calories, will allow you to reach your weight goals and keep you on track while still feeling well. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Can you place plastics in the dishwasher? I have read that dangerous chemicals can be released from the plastic. -R.E. ANSWER: Most plastics are safe, but you should put only plastics labeled “dishwasher safe” in the dishwasher, and placing on the top rack reduces the heat the plastic is subjected to. Never reuse any plastic that has been partially melted by dishwasher or microwave. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell. edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. For NFL, More Means Less

The NFL is under siege, and some industry analysts are pointing at the great American game’s sudden decline in TV ratings as proof. According to Nielson, the company most trusted to tell us about who is watching what and when, ratings this season are down somewhere between 10 percent and 15 percent, depending on the day you’re watching. Is there any reason to worry? Of course not. The NFL is still the most-watched programming in these United States. During this decade, the NFL Sunday Night Football broadcast on NBC is the most-watched television series there is, averaging a little over 15 percent of all households watching TV. The lowest-rated games still dwarf the number of people watching anything else. More than 200 million individual viewers have tuned in to watch a game over the past five years. That’s more than 60 percent of our entire country. So broadcasters and advertising agencies can rest easy. Still, anytime any commodity’s value drops by 10 percent in the growth-obsessed American business model, there is an issue that needs to be addressed. A backup quarterback kneeling for the anthem is not causing 20 million people to tune out. Certainly the counter-programming of the election debates factors into the decline, but it’s more likely a case of the NFL shooting itself it in the foot, and that problem lays squarely at the feet of commissioner Roger Goodell and the team owners. This is a league that delights in destroying their players. They will fine their biggest stars the equivalent of the manufacturer’s suggested retail price of a Buick for the crime of taking off their helmet or pressing a finger to their lips after scoring a touchdown. They’ll humiliate and suspend their biggest star, Tom Brady, and throw shade on the Patriots, the watered-down league’s only perennial powerhouse, over the lack of air pressure. But player concussions? No such thing -- and don’t you dare try and prove it. Don’t want to stand for the pregame Francis Scott Key song? Fine ... but you better make it to the post-Katie Perry halftime press conference or that’s another Buick you won’t be buying, buck-o. Gambling problem? No, it’s all just “fantasy” (but pay no attention to the Raiders moving to Vegas for $750 million, that is, unless you pay taxes). Beat up your girlfriend, your wife or your kid? Here, take a multi-million dollar contract and report to camp or just skip the team flight to London. And everyone knows you can’t kill anybody if you’re the best player on defense. Games used to be an event ... they used to make really cool films about them, too. Now you can’t go a couple of hours without seeing a game because it’s on Thursday night, Sunday morning, Sunday afternoon, late Sunday afternoon, Sunday night and Monday night. The only break you get from the NFL is college football all day Saturday, and when the college season is over, the NFL will play on Saturday, too. Less used to mean more for the NFL, but maybe that’s why the league has acted so confounded to learn that “more of” is leading to “less than.” Maybe there can be too much of a good thing after all. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

The statistics on elder financial abuse are ugly. Abuse victims lose roughly $2.6 billion per year. One in every 20 seniors admits to being the victim of financial abuse, but only one in every 44 cases is reported. In the online blog “Recognizing Signs of Elder Abuse (and Traits of Elder Abusers),” attorney Will Sleeth lists the ways abusers can put pressure on seniors to change their estate plans. They can include bullying, isolating and threatening. The tactics and suggested investments from a financial abuser might sound a bit off as well, such as an anonymous investment club. Characteristics of the abusers themselves can be surprising. They’re often educated, sophisticated and well-off. Sometimes they’re convicted felons, or attorneys or doctors who lost their licenses to practice. Mostly, however, they’re socially isolated, having few friends or social contacts. That’s where the Internet can be handy. Many states have court case search features in their online judicial record systems. These are searchable by location, date ... and name. Anyone who is a financial abuser of seniors likely has done it before, and there will be a record of previous court cases and lawsuits. The National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (www.preventelderabuse.org) has a large section on financial abuse. Financial scammers can sink so low as to read newspaper death announcements to identify those who are recently widowed and therefore vulnerable. If you’ve been the victim of financial abuse, or think someone is trying to scam you, speak up. Call the police. Call your bank and ask to speak to the manager. You can be protected. Vets TV Network A former Marine has come up with a great idea: a veterans’ television network. He didn’t come by that idea the easy way; it took the suicide death of his pal to force him to realize that humor might be the only real way to combat the horrible statistics of veteran suicide. Thus, he launched a Kickstarter program for a proposed television network called Veteran Television, or VetTV. According to the three-minute video, VetTV intends to use “humor and camaraderie to bring veterans together to heal the mental wounds of war” using authentic humor, not the kind that Hollywood produces. Some of the proposed shows sound promising: Kill, Die, Laugh; A Grunt’s Life; The Veteran Mating Game; and Gods of War. It will show the good, the bad and the ugly of military life ... but with humor. The creator says he’s aiming at the post-9/11 veteran, but from what I’ve seen so far, it speaks to all veterans. The shows will be streamed to phone, tablet or computer once a week, like Hulu or Netflix. Subscribers will vote on the shows that will be seen next. The venture needs $250,000 to create four months of shows, with one new episode per week for each branch of the military. After the initial funding, the VetTV will be selfsustaining. Content will be for veterans, made by veterans. Subscriptions will cost only $5 per month. VetTV has already partnered with veteranowned businesses and nonprofits to help with Kickstarter. At this writing, it has nearly 1,000 backers and $80,000. To view the three-minute info video, go to bit. ly/2e8EGUi, and for more information, go to veterantv.net. Click on Kickstarter to view the fundraising campaign and decide if you can send a few dollars. After all, it’s for us. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.
