37% of all deaths in the United States are related to heart disease, making it the largest single cause of natural death. Heart disease kills twice as many people as all forms of cancer combined. The major causes are smoking, fatty diet, high blood pressure, obesity, stress, heredity, lack of exercise, and diabetes. It is an illness produced of man’s environment. Before 1900, heart attacks were very rare. The rate of heart disease increased so sharply between 1940 and 1967 that the World Health Organization called it the world’s most serious epidemic.

IT’S A FACT •

Every single cell in the heart is guided by an electrical impulse which synchronizes the heartbeat so all muscle cells contract in unison to pump the blood. During a heart attack, the cells begin firing out of turn so the efficiency of the heart is lost and the blood does not get pumped. When doctors shock the heart, the shock overrides each cell’s individual firing mechanism and once again synchronizes every cell, hopefully getting them all to work together again.

Tidbits® of Douglas & Elbert Counties TELL TALE HEART

Heart disease is the number one killer of men and women. About a quarter of a million women will have a serious heart attack this year. It’s true that estrogen gives women a healthy edge in fighting heart disease, but after menopause, the risk increases yearly till women are equal with men. Between the ages of 45 and 65, one out of nine women will show symptoms of heart disease, compared to one in seven men. But after age 65, the ratio jumps to one in three, which is equal to that of men. However, studies have shown that in the first weeks following a heart attack, women are twice as likely to die as men. Furthermore, more women die during bypass surgery than do men. Why? Some doctors say it’s due to a combination of factors. One is that when men go to a doctor and complain of chest pains, doctors automatically think of heart disease. But when women complain of chest pains, doctors may still think of heart trouble as a “man’s disease” and will look for other causes first. Furthermore, some doctors tend to think of women as having more psychosomatic illnesses than men. Women too are at fault, for a study has shown that they tend to wait longer than men before going to the hospital for help, increasing their chance of complications.

One cardiovascular surgeon theorizes that another reason more women die during bypass surgery is because they have proportionately smaller arteries, making the surgery more difficult.

Men suffer heart attacks an average of ten years earlier in life than women, but women are twice as likely to die from their first heart attack as men.

It’s estimated that 90% of heart disease could have been prevented.

On average, one person dies of a heart attack every minute in the U.S.

HEART OF THE PROBLEM •

About 600,000 Americans die of heart attacks each year. 350,000 of them die before they can even reach a hospital.

Cardiovascular problems are responsible for over half the deaths of people over age 65.

A quarter of the people who die of heart attacks show no previous sign of disease.

Stress plays a role in 70% of all illnesses. People under stress are six times as likely to have a heart attack as those under little stress.

The heart of a typical alcoholic may be twice the size it should be.

Smoking is responsible for 100,000 deaths from lung cancer and 170,000 deaths from heart attacks each year.

CUTTING THE RISKS •

People with coronary heart disease are 30% less likely to suffer from blocked arteries if they regularly take naps during the day.

Females who jog an average of 27 miles per week are sick an average of two days per year, compared to eleven sick days for female non-runners. Male runners missed an average of 1.5 days per year compared to 4.4 sick days for male non-runners.

People who work in factories with high noise levels have higher rates of cardiovascular disease, digestive disorders, and circulatory problems than those with quieter workplaces.

A study of 45,000 men done by the Harvard University School of Public Health showed coffee does not increase the risk of heart attack or stroke as long as fewer than six cups per day are consumed.

Smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee at the same time raises the blood pressure. The combination of caffeine and nicotine also stops the effects of many high blood pressure medications. This spells danger for those whose blood pressure is already too high.

FAST FACTS •

In 1933 at the age of 58, Wilson Mizner had a heart attack in Hollywood, where he was a screen writer. When he regained consciousness, he was asked if he wanted to see a priest. “I want to see a priest, a rabbi, and a Protestant clergyman,” he said. “I want to hedge my bets!” When a priest came to his deathbed, Mizner waved him away, saying, “Why should I talk to you? I’ve just been talking to your boss!” He died shortly afterwards, reportedly with a smile.

Walter Matthau had a heart attack in the middle of filming

Rabies is occurring at an alarming rate on the front range of Colorado. Skunks, raccoons, and bats are the main source of the infection. Recent outbreaks in El Paso County have involved rabid skunks. A bitten horse had to be euthanized and its owner went through the rabies treatment protocol. Any wild animal that acts too friendly or has strange behaviors should be avoided. If you suspect a wild animal of having rabies call your county health department for advice. Many bite wounds in humans and animals should be taken seriously. Have your pets (cats, dogs, & horses) vaccinated with rabies vaccines at appropriate intervals.

Cats are very curious and like to hunt. Most cats will run from other animals when they approach but where cats are at most risk is with bats. A flopping bat whether indoors or outdoors is a high risk source of rabies for cats. Many cat owners do not vaccinate their indoor cats for rabies but this is a mistake. The highest incidence of rabies in domestic animals in most areas occurs in cats.

8900 S. Brompton Way Parker, CO 80134

Dogs are curious with land animals (skunks and raccoons). Getting bit on the nose or front paws is common. Because of the wandering nature of dogs the rabies threat is very real. Rabid coyotes and foxes are a threat so stay away from these animals if they have odd behavior (either too friendly, depressed or a manic sick behavior). Horses are at risk of being bitten by rabid animals. There is rabies vaccine for horses and where the incidence of rabies is a fact the need to protect horses is relevant. Many have seen the ‘tear-jerker’ movie “Old Yeller” which ends with the boy shooting his rabid canine companion. Rabies is a real disease that can easily be prevented by vaccination. Dr. James K. 303.688.1966 Bob Lowry

The cat's-eye chrysoberyl reminds many of the eye of a panther with its distinct band of light that crosses its face from top to bottom or side to side. This mysterious looking gemstone is a cousin of the color-changing alexandrite. Chrysoberyl colors range from a honey brown to an apple green with the rich gold colors deemed the most valuable. The principal value factor is the strength and sharpness of the eye. Fine cat’s-eye chrysoberyl often shows a “milk and honey” effect. When a bright light is directed at the side of the stone, one side of the eye will be milky white while the other will glow a honey gold. If you rotate the stone, the colors switch. Perhaps the changing aspect of this stone is why men love cat’s-eye chrysoberyl in their jewelry. And then there’s the myth that a cat’s eye can point fortune in the direction of the one wearing it – just another reason to own this enigmatic gemstone. If you want to find a cat’s-eye for yourself you’ll have to travel to Sri Lanka, Brazil or China and while you’re hunting, don’t confuse the real chrysoberyl cat’s eye with quartz cat’s eyes. Or just drop in to Pinetree Jewelers and we’ll help you find the perfect cat’s eye for you.

Protect your garden Just like Mr. McGregor, many gardeners are plagued with the likes of Peter Rabbit and other critters who are intent on feasting on their ripening gardens. As the corn and tomatoes begin to ripen, wildlife starts to take an interest in the harvest. Squirrels, rabbits, raccoons and other wildlife love corn on the cob, pumpkins and cucumbers as much as humans do. All too often gardeners who have been waiting for the corn to reach its prime go out to pick it and find that a raccoon or skunk has stripped the stalks clean. It's a gardener's worst nightmare - but there are steps you can take to protect your harvest. Some projects take a little more effort than others. But if you've been growing corn all season and lose it overnight to wildlife, it might be worth the effort to safeguard the veggies. Rabbits • They can be deterred by building raised beds for edibles at heights higher than rabbits can jump - which is about 2 feet for a mature rabbit. • Another deterrent you can put in place right away is to create a fence-like enclosure around edibles that they cannot see through and that's about two feet high - again, higher than the rabbits can jump. If you make it difficult for rabbits to get into the garden, they are more likely to forage elsewhere. Bird netting is another relatively easy and cost-effective solution that can be used to deter many forms of wildlife. This is a product available in most garden centers. It can protect your harvest not only from birds, but can keep out other critters. It can be draped over plants or used with the remesh product described below. Remesh is a product that gardeners are starting to adapt and re-purpose from the concrete and tile industry. • It is made of reasonably sturdy metal in a wire grid. The square spaces within the grid being several inches long and wide make it excellent spacing to create tomato cages or for growing cucumbers, squash, beans and even small melons. • The metal is durable and very long lasting which makes it a cost effective investment. • It is available in rolls or flat sheets and it can be found in big box stores and hardware stores. Remesh can also be used to protect plants from wildlife. Plants can be circled with the remesh and then covered with bird netting. This method can help deter birds, skunks, squirrels and rabbits. Raccoons being highly intelligent animals are more difficult to thwart. To provide increased protection for corn or other plants, the barrier needs to have a slick surface that raccoons can't hold onto or climb. Remesh that is wrapped with metal or plastic sheeting will be a better deterrent than netting because it provides that slick surface. If you make it difficult for critters to get to your harvest, they are more likely to follow a path of less resistance to get what they want. Q: Is gum disease contagious? A: Yes! The bad bugs (“bacteria”) that cause gum disease are readily passed from one person to another. (Be sure to “think before you kiss”!) Gum disease (Periodontal Disease) is an infection in the gums and bone supporting the teeth, caused by specific bacteria. These bacteria organize into a sticky, creamy, stinky substance (paque) that sticks tenaciously around the teeth and gums. Gum disease can advance for years without detection or pain. Damage to the supporting bone is irreversible. The best cure is prevention before it happens or stopping gum disease in its tracks before major damage and tooth loss occur, and before you pass it to your “significant other”. See your dentist and dental hygienist and be sure to ask those important questions above – or call our office for a FREE Periodontal checkup and exam.
