THE COLOR PURPLE by Kathy Wolfe

Mix a little blue light and a little red light, and there you have it – purple! This week, Tidbits examines this “royal” color, and looks at eve-rything from fruits to dinosaurs! • Purple light doesn’t actually exist in its own wavelength, only as a combination of blue and red. Don’t confuse purple with violet, which is a spectral color, meaning it appears as a single wavelength of light. • Purple has long been associated with roy-alty, mostly because they were the only ones who could afford it! The pigment used to color the robes of the royals came from an unusual gastropod sea snail, a mollusk that secreted a milky colorless substance that changed to a long-lasting dye once exposed to the air. It was this Bolinus brandaris creature, habitating primarily in the Mediter-ranean Sea, that the ancients dating back to the time of Alexander the Great used to cre-ate the color known as Tyrian, or Imperial, purple. • From 1957 to 2003, children everywhere could draw their various art projects with a mulberry crayon. Crayola hues in the purple family included, among others, eggplant, fuchsia, plum, orchid, wisteria, and the patriotic purple mountains’ majesty. Continued on the next page...

THE COLOR PURPLE (continued): • As children, we cranked our jack-in-the-box and sang of the monkey chasing the weasel around the mulberry bush, but, in truth, mulberries don’t grow on bushes! Rather, they grow on a subtropical tree found primarily in parts of Asia. These trees can grow to heights of 49 feet and folk medicine touts its medicinal properties. The sweet fruit is rich in anthocyanins, which function as powerful antioxidants. • While some language experts maintain that there is no English word that rhymes with “purple,” poet Robert Burns used the word “curple” in one of his missives. This unusual word referred to “the small of the waist before the flare of the hips.” Not nearly as eloquent as Scotland’s favorite bard, in his 1964 hit “Dang Me,” country artist Roger Miller crooned, “Roses are red, violets are purple, Sugar is sweet and so is maple surple.”

• Most Americans have watched the election night returns on television and followed the map’s breakdown of red (Republican) and blue (Democrat) states. But just what is a purple state? Just as equal amounts of red and blue produce purple, a “purple state” has a relatively equal balance between Republicans and Democrats.

• Many Jimi Hendrix fans consider his 1967 hit “Purple Haze” his signature song. Hendrix claimed he received his inspiration for the song from a dream in which he was walking under the sea, while others speculate that the “haze” was a result of the hallucinogenic substances Hendrix ingested. • Whether he was known as, or formerly known as, rock star Prince had a winner in his 1984 album, Purple Rain, a compilation of music that went platinum 13 times. Entertainment Weekly ranked it as the Number One album of the past 25 years. Minneapolis-born Prince Rogers Nelson used an unusual, unpronounceable symbol O(+>) from 1993 to 2000 to represent his name, but most folks just called him The Artist Formerly Known as Prince. • In 1958, musician Sheb Wooley wrote a peculiar little song about a monster – the “one-eyed, one-horned flying purple people eater” – who descended to Earth. Who could have known that this composition would turn gold only three weeks after its release! Within a month, sales were at three million records. Ten years later, Wooley’s work contributed to the new nickname of the purplejerseyed defensive line of the Minnesota Vikings, which included Jim Marshall, Carl Eller, Gary Larsen, and Alan Page. These front four played together on the gridiron for seven seasons, including the 1969 Pro Bowl game. • At each one of Babe Ruth’s birthday parties for nearly 10 years, a popular Big Band performed his favorite ballad, the 1933 hit “Deep Purple.” Thirty-five years later, a group of British musicians, including guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, were preparing to make it big in the industry. When Blackmore’s grandmother heard about the new group, she asked her grandson if they would be performing one of her favorites, “Deep Purple,” and the heavy metal band of the same name was born. Their 1972 hit “Smoke on the Water” was based on the band’s true experience of watching a casino burn to the ground on the shores of Lake Geneva, Switzerland. • If you’re a pool player, you already know that the solid “4” ball and the striped “12” balls are purple. Pool balls were originally crafted from wood, graduating to clay and ivory before the invention of celluloid, and Bakelite and acrylic plastics. Ivory was an impractical source, as only three or four balls could be fashioned from one tusk.

Cats have extremely good sense of smell and the ability to scent mark their territory. Humans have a very poor sense of smell compared to the cat and dog. Cats can detect smells 1,400 times better than humans and dogs are best at 1,000,000 times better than humans. Cats use scents called pheromones to select a mate, communicate territory limits, and to mark their owners. Humans have approximately 5 million olfactory cells for the detection of smells. Cats have about 200 million olfactory cells which alert the cat to likes, dislikes, dangers, and the proximity of a mate. Cats ‘mark territory’ with scent glands located in paws, facial glands, and the tail. This allows the cat to recognize environmental signals they spread in their territory. Signals to mate, signals of possession, and signals to confront intruders are part of the non-verbal language of the cat. When a cat rubs on objects they leave an olfactory scent that gives other cats a message/business card. When your cat rubs on you he is ‘marking’ you as his own and trying to give you a scent message. Few people ever relate ‘facial marking’ or ‘tail marking’ with its true meaning – “love, affection and you are mine”. Feline knowledge: in a great human/cat relationship your cat owns you.

The Flehmens response (mouth gaping) is the evolution of higher smell capabilities. Specific taste/smell cells located in Jacobson’s organs pick up subtle odors in the environment. A cat that experiences these smells may hyper-ventilate, open mouth breathe, and curl his upper lip in a grimace expression. Olfactory cats make many of their decisions about interaction with humans and other animals based on smell. Friend or Foe is defined in an instant. Dr. James K. • So what in the world is a plumcot? It’s the result of a breeder crossing an apricot with a plum. This hybrid is half apricot and half plum, while an aprium is 75% apricot and 25% plum, and a pluot is 75% plum and 25% apricot.

Only about 25 percent of Iceland is fit for human habitation. Volcanoes, lava fields, glaciers, hot springs, gravel deserts, and vast expanses of stony wilderness prevent suitable living conditions in the remainder. Eleven percent of Iceland is covered by glaciers, with one glacier alone occupying 3,240 miles, 8.1percent of the island’s area. Seven volcanoes are scattered across the wilderness, most of them active, one of which erupted as recently as 2004. • Iceland’s neighbor 180 miles to the northeast, Greenland, is part of North America, but Iceland is part of Europe. The Vikings came to Iceland around 870, seeking freedom from a government that was becoming too “civilized” and because of a shortage of land in Scandinavia.

• There’s nothing primitive about living in this country. Residents enjoy one of the highest standards of living in the world. The United Nations Index ranks it as the most developed country in the world and they boast a 99.9 percent literacy rate and a life expectancy rate of 81.5 years. Their car ownership per capita is also near the top of the world’s list. Population density is only about 7.2 persons per square mile, and the average age of those persons is approximately 35. Iceland is proud of their 99 airports; however, only six of them have paved runways!

• Nearly every building in Iceland’s capital city, Reykjavik, is heated with geothermal power from underground natural hot water. This 140-degree water is transported to hot water tanks all over the city. About 64 percent of Iceland’s population lives in and around Reykjavik. • Although we may think of Iceland as a frigid place to reside, it’s actually a fairly mild climate, with a high temperature record of 86.9° and a record-setting cold temp of -36.4°.

• The English language borrows its word for “a spring gushing hot water and steam” from an Icelandic natural resource, Geysir, the world’s oldest known geyser, with eruptions on record since the early 14th century. A short distance away is Strokkur, Iceland’s own “Old Faithful,” which can be counted on to erupt every two to five minutes, sending boiling water 70 feet upward. Compare this to Yellowstone Park’s Old Faithful, a gusher that varies in frequency from 45 minutes to two hours, hurling water up to 185 feet into the sky. Geysir, not so faithful, is often dormant for years at a time.

• If you’re invited to dine in Iceland, you might feast on skyr, a very soft cheese first introduced to the island by the Vikings. Shark or sheep heads might be the main course. If you order black pudding, don’t think you’ll be getting a yummy dessert. It’s actually a dark sausage stuffed with animal blood, suet, oats, and barley.

Jade

Jade has been known to mankind for some 7000 years, but in prehistoric times was known more for its toughness and was used for weapons and tools. As early as 3000 BC Scott McQueen jade was employed in China as a royal gem and has enjoyed a long history in the art and culture of the Chinese empire. Over the years the people of Asia have placed a greater importance on jade than any other culture. The ancient Mayas, Aztecs and Olmecs of Central America also valued jade – even more highly than gold. The Maoris of New Zealand continue to use jade in weapons and cult instruments, a practice that began in early times. In ancient Egypt jade was admired as the stone of love, inner peace, harmony and balance. Other religions and cultures have also deemed jade as a protecting force and good fortune. Today this gem is believed to be a symbol of goodness, beauty, justice, wisdom, compassion, and courage, not to mention, female-erotic! Jade’s subtle luster along with its naturally toughness may be why it has been so appreciated around the world and down through the centuries. It comes in many fine nuances of green, but also in shades of white, black, gray, yellow, orange and even in delicate violet tones. Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. 2 store locations: 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker and 190 S Wilcox in Castle Rock. A: Late winter is a good time to prune back non-flowering trees, once the coldest part of the season is past. It typically results in a burst of new growth once spring roars in. However, if the tree is already showing buds, hold off on the project until after the leaves are fully open. Homeowners also can prune at the end of summer -- it’s a good time to cut back branches that are hanging down too far under the weight of their leaves, for example. In either case, safety is paramount when it comes to pruning trees. Not only is working from a height a consideration, but surrounding power lines and other hazards can present extreme danger. If the branches involved are near the ground, not close to power lines or hanging over structures, and you have the proper tools to trim the branches along with a helper or three, then go ahead. A number of resources are available online. If the trees are very tall, if the branches involved overhang structures or wires, or if the branches are too large to safely remove with the tools at hand, don’t do it yourself. Contact a tree service or arborist to come out and do an estimate of the time and cost involved in the project. In either case, pruning trees will help keep them healthy and will keep your house and yard safer from falling debris. Trees will weather storms better and develop a more varied branch system. So it’s worth the effort and cost of taking care of them regularly, both on your own or with a professional tree service. HOME TIP: Always get estimates from more than one tree-trimming service, and don’t allow work to begin until you’ve agreed to it in writing. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com.
