PAPER

by Janet Spencer

On December 26, 1854, John Beardsley showed paper samples made from wood pulp to the editor of the Buffalo, NY “Democrat” who wrote an article exclaiming over how wonderful the newfangled paper was. Come along with Tidbits as we look at the history of paper!

ISSUE 902 • December 15, 2014

PAPER BASICS • Paper has been described as “70% wood and 30% chemistry.” Modern paper is made by having a log chipped, digested, refined, washed, screened, pressed, heated, and rolled.

• For centuries the most popular writing surface was parchment, made from animal hides. The Egyptians used fibers from papyrus stems that were soaked, pounded, and laid in mats to dry. • In the year 105 A.D., a clerk in China pulverized rags, cooked them, then dipped a screen into the liquid and let the fibers dry. This was the method used to form paper for the next 1,500 years. Previous to this, silk had been used as a writing surface, but because of this new invention, China was able to export more silk, leading to an economic boom. • Rags were the main source of papermaking fiber for centuries. The result was a thick, gray paper that was often streaked with colors from the old clothing that was used to make it.

Interesting Stuff

THE HISTORY OF PAPER (cont’d) • In 1666 in England, cotton and linen were prohibited from being used for burial shrouds in order to make them available for papermaking. Wool was the only fabric that was allowed to be used for a shroud, because you cannot make paper out of wool. In the 1700s there was a shortage of rags to make paper. Nations passed laws forbidding rags to be taken out of the country. Rag smuggling became a lucrative profession. • In 1719 a Frenchman named Reaumur noticed that wasps scraped rotting logs with their legs, chewed the scrapings, and made pulp that was turned into their papery nests. The wasps preferred evergreens, which today provide most of our paper. He presented this to the Royal Academy as evidence that paper could be made from material other than rags. It took years for the knowledge to be put to use. • Paper was first manufactured in the U.S. at the Rittenhouse Mill, Germantown, PA, in 1690. Rittenhouse made paper out of flax linen rags. A large printer in Philadelphia bought the entire supply of Rittenhouse paper. This irked Benjamin Franklin, who had to use imported paper for all of his printing projects. Because of this, Franklin was instrumental in setting up 18 other paper mills in order to break the Rittenhouse paper monopoly. He subsequently became not only America’s first major paper merchant, but also Philadelphia’s largest printer. Franklin once quipped, “Never argue with a man who buys his ink by the gallon.”

• In 1800, Matthias Koop wrote and published a book called Historical account of the substances which have been used to describe events, and to convey ideas, from the earliest date, to the invention of paper. It was printed on paper made from straw and glued wood shavings. The book was very sturdy but very costly, and Koop soon went bankrupt. (cont’d) • In the 1830s and 1840s, two men on two different continents began to experiment with making paper out of pulped wood instead of pulped rags. Charles Fenerty in Canada and Friedrich Keller of Germany individually invented a machine that extracted fibers from wood and made paper from it. This started a new era for paper making. By the end of the 19th century almost all paper in the western world came from wood instead of rags. • Ruled paper was first produced by machine by John Tetlow in England in the 1770s. It was used for music paper and accounting ledgers. Before this, the rules had to be drawn by hand. • During the Civil War, there were 555 paper mills in the U.S., but only 24 were located in the South. Naval blockades caused southern newspaper offices to run out of paper so some editions were printed on wallpaper. • Next came the invention of the first practical fountain pen, the mass-produced pencil, and the steam-driven rotary printing press. With paper now cheap and widely available, books, schoolbooks, and newspapers became available by 1900. Widespread availability of wood-based paper also meant that keeping diaries and writing letters became common.

CARDBOARD • The first cardboard was made in 1824. When people started shipping things in cardboard, manufacturers of wooden boxes and barrels pressured railroads and insurance companies to refuse to handle or insure them, due to increased Continued on page 5

Nature has given our domestic cats a fur coat that insulates from the cold and warm weather. Usually warm weather is less of a problem than cold weather unless you live in a desert with no shade or protection from the sun. The cold temperatures when combined with rain, wind, hail, sleet, and snow can be a huge challenge for survival. The wild cats in Colorado, the mountain lion and bobcat, have adapted well to harsh climate changes and the ability to hunt for food. Humans are the biggest threat to wildlife. With our domestic cats we can tilt the chance for survival in our cat’s favor by providing the basics – good food, safe shelter, and love!

bed, or a cat door to get into a warm house will provide comfort for your cat. A refuge from coyotes and owls especially in cold weather when escape is difficult will enhance survival. Wild creatures need to eat and your cat is food. Some environments are cat friendly and others are not. Try to improve your cat’s

chances to thrive. Cats can survive better than most humans in the wild but cold can kill. If your cat becomes hypothermic or gets frostbite – rewarm slowly and get your cat to an emergency hospital A.S.A.P.

Most cat owners plan for the safety of their cats and can avoid seasonal risk factors. With the holiday season upon us we need to see that our cats/pets are not exposed to the extremes of weather, do not contact poisons like antifreeze, do not get into chocolate, string, decorations, or other holiday fare.

Jade has been known to mankind for some 7000 years, but in prehistoric times was known more for its toughness and was used for weapons and tools. As early as 3000 BC Scott McQueen jade was employed in China as a royal gem and has enjoyed a long history in the art and culture of the Chinese empire. Over the years the people of Asia have placed a greater importance on jade than any other culture. The ancient Mayas, Aztecs and Olmecs of Central America also valued jade – even more highly than gold. The Maoris of New Zealand continue to use jade in weapons and cult instruments, a practice that began in early times. In ancient Egypt jade was admired as the stone of love, inner peace, harmony and balance. Other religions and cultures have also deemed jade as a protecting force and good fortune. Today this gem is believed to be a symbol of goodness, beauty, justice, wisdom, compassion, and courage, not to mention, female-erotic! Jade’s subtle luster along with its naturally toughness may be why it has been so appreciated around the world and down through the centuries. It comes in many fine nuances of green, but also in shades of white, black, gray, yellow, orange and even in delicate violet tones.

• In 1872, the first paper bag manufacturing machine was patented by L. C. Crowell. Paper bags had been around a long time, but they were pasted together by hand and had V-shaped bottoms. What made these paper bags so popular was that they would stand alone. When supermarkets became popular in the 1930’s, business boomed.

VENTURES IN PUBLISHING • Gutenberg spent 20 years in the 1400’s perfecting the first method of printing using moveable type and a press. He was a skilled metalworker and was familiar with tools. To typeset the Bible required 2,500 individual pieces of type for each page. He used parchment because paper had not yet been invented, and each Gutenberg Bible required the skins of 300 sheep. Ink was made from pine shavings and soot. It took three years to produce the Bibles, which had 1,284 pages each. He printed 200 of them, and 47 still survive. However, Gutenberg went heavily into debt to develop this technique. The same year the Bibles were completed, his financier confiscated all his equipment and used it to make himself rich. Gutenberg died in poverty, yet his name lives on today.

WORLD’S FINEST • Cartier on Fifth Avenue in New York at one time offered for sale handmade stationery from Finland with rough edges and a personalized portrait watermark. For only $10,000 you could get 100 sheets (including envelopes.) To write on such paper, one should really have a nice pen, such as the two 18-carat diamond capped pens that sold for just under $23,000. To go along with that, you might be interested in a blue glass paperweight made in Paris around 1850. It sold for $143,000 in 1982.

CHARLES FENERTY

• Charles Fenerty was born around 1820 in Sackville, NS, just north of Halifax. Fenerty’s family owned 2,000 acres of farmland and timberland. Because there were many lakes in the area, it was the perfect spot for lumber mills. Charles grew up working on the family farm and helping out in the family saw mills. • By the time he became an adult, the demand for paper was far outstripping the supply. Back then, paper was still being made out of rags. Every time a new paper mill opened, they would put out a desperate plea for people to sell or donate old rags so they could be milled into paper.

Artificial or natural tree? Artificial trees are less of a fire hazard and don't drop needles to create a mess on the floor like the natural ones do. Being pre-lit so all you have to do is plug them in is a time saver as there are no lights to string around the tree. You don't have to worry about getting this tree outside or delivered for recycling, either. For many, those factors are the tipping point for the artificial tree. And that's a valid choice for many. On the other hand, if you love the smell of a fresh evergreen and keep it watered regularly to reduce fire hazard and slow the needle drop, a fresh tree might be the one for you. Even though it seems wasteful to remove a live tree from its natural habitat, you're actually acting sustainably. An artificial tree must be used 20 years to have a lower carbon footprint than a natural tree. One acre of Christmas trees growing on a tree farm creates enough oxygen to support 18 people. So if you like the fragrance, control the mess and keep your tree fire safe, go for the natural one. Other ways to go green Reduce energy with LED lighting. Whatever your tree, light it up with LED lights. They are safe because they generate no heat to ignite the tree. They require less power and many less outlets. Many strands can be plugged end-to-end and into one single outlet. They are energy efficient. Reuse what you have. Use the lowest branches cut off a natural tree to a vase and bring the evergreen fragrance to another room. Gather pine cones and branches with berries from the yard and make them part of your fresh holiday décor. Look for branches such as red twig dogwood to add interest in outdoor containers and indoor arrangements. Re-purpose materials such as turning pine cones into fire starters. Dip, dry and re-dip pine cones 4-5 times in melted wax to create fire starters for a fireplace or outdoor fire pit. Pay attention to pets Decking the halls with live plants is a sustainable decorating choice, but know the limits when it comes to pets. If pets chew on plants, avoid these toxic plants in your holiday décor. Amaryllis plants are very toxic and the bulb more so. American holly has potentially toxic compounds that can cause gastrointestinal irritation. Mistletoe berries and leaves can cause mild gastritis - but the most serious threat to pets is the plastic berries often included in the package. Many holiday vet visits are due to pets ingesting these berries. Kalanchoe, a flowering succulent, is popular at the holidays because of its showy blooms. It, too, can cause gastrointestinal problems for pets. Displaying What about poinsettias? Contrary to urban myth, they are a safe holiday standby. The bracts of poinsettia leaves are not seriously toxic and a much safer plant choice if you have pets. Studies at the Mayo Clinic and Colorado State University's Fact sheets confirm this.

New Beginning

• On Dec. 29, 1170, Archbishop Thomas Becket is murdered in Canterbury Cathedral by four knights on orders of King Henry II of England. The Christian world was shocked by Becket’s death, and in 1173 he was canonized a Catholic saint. In 1174, Henry was forced to do penance at his tomb. • On Dec. 31, 1879, in the first public demonstration of his incandescent light bulb, inventor Thomas Alva Edison lights up a street in Menlo Park, New Jersey. The Pennsylvania Railroad Company ran special trains to Menlo Park in response to public enthusiasm over the event. • On Dec. 30, 1936, in one of the first sit-down strikes in the United States, autoworkers occupy the General Motors Fisher Body Plant in Flint, Michigan. In all, the strike lasted 44 days. Among other things, the workers were given a 5 percent raise. • On Jan. 1, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill issue a declaration, signed by representatives of 26 countries, called the “United Nations.” The signatories vowed to create an international postwar peacekeeping organization. • On Jan. 3, 1952, Sergeant Joe Friday’s police drama “Dragnet” comes to television. A popular radio series since 1949, it became one of the first TV series filmed in California, instead of New York. It began a long line of crime and police dramas, continuing into the present with “Law & Order” and “CSI.” • On Jan. 2, 1981, Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper, is captured by British police, ending one of the largest manhunts in history. For five years, investigators had pursued every lead in an effort to stop the serial killer. Sutcliffe himself was interviewed nine times. When Sutcliffe was finally convicted, he had killed 13 women. • On Jan. 4, 1999, for the first time since Charlemagne’s reign in the ninth century, Europe is united with a common currency when the “euro” debuts. Eleven European Union nations launched the currency in the hopes of increasing European economic growth.

HOW TO START A FIGHT One year, I decided to buy my mother-in-law a cemetery plot as a Christmas gift... The next year, I didn't buy her a gift. When she asked me why, I replied,

My wife and I were sitting at a table at her high school reunion, and she kept staring at a drunken man swigging his drink as he sat alone at a nearby table. I asked her, "Do you know him?" "Yes", she sighed, "He's my old boyfriend. I understand he took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear he hasn't been sober since." "My God!" I said, "Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?"
