We've all heard stories about moms who go above and beyond the call of duty for their families, but when is too much too much? A classic example is the story of the mom who was determined to clean up the kitchen before calling 911, even though she had symptoms of an impending heart attack. According to Dr. Margaret Beahrs -- a cardiologist at St. Paul Heart Clinic in St. Paul, Minn., and advocate for women's cardiovascular health -- stories abound of women who put their family to-do list before seeking care. "Just last winter a grandmother chose to get the holiday baking done on time, ignoring the symptoms of chest discomfort and shortness of breath," she recalled. "Unfortunately, she waited too long and came into the hospital too late." "Women tend to put themselves and their heart health last during the holidays and family celebrations," said Dr. Beahrs. "Mother's Day is an ideal time to remind women to have a heart. Your family needs you for a long time!" Here's how the kids can give Mom a heart-healthy break. Set the mood and encourage her to relax on Mother's Day and throughout the year with colorful stained-glass votive candleholders. The kids can design the lovely gift in three easy steps using old, recycled juice glasses, bright tissue paper and household glue.

Here's how: 1. Cut plain tissue paper into 1-inch squares, triangles and rectangles. Older kids might want to try heart, fish, star and flower shapes as well. 2. Squeeze white household glue into a small bowl and dilute with a few drops of water. Brush a light coat of the glue mixture on the outside of a juice glass. In an overlapping pattern, apply the tissue shapes over the glue. Smooth out each piece with your fingers as you go along. 3. When the outside of the glass is covered, apply another coating or two of the glue mixture over all of the tissue paper. Let dry for several hours. When dry, the tissue paper will look bright and colorful once again. Set a votive candle inside and gift wrap it with love for Mom on Mother's Day.
