ARCHITECTURE I | SHELTER Architect Nicolau Brand達o 2004|2005
Shelter Model
This work represents the first approach in the degree of architecture on the issue of Living. It was intended that starting from a place, a mesh, develop a shelter. In this work more than the solution is valued the work process and how drawing is used as a tool. The Shelter had as main characteristic the fact that the access is made through a spiral staircase around a tree. The first floor hosts all the living areas and service, at the top floor there is only one space, with a shorter height than the other compartment, where the user sleeps on the floor like in a camp, resulting from the fact that this is a temporary dwelling, a shelter in the middle of a forest.

ARCHITECTURE II | PUBLIC SPACE LARGO DE S.VÍTOR | OPORTO Architect Luís Rodrigues 2005|2006
Model
This work was asked for an intervention of a public space in the area of S. Vitor in Oporto. To solve the problem of the sloping terrain it was created a platform at the highest level of the ground, creating a clear, wide and fluid space. With this platform the boundary of the square, is not restricted to the site, but has as its southern limit Vila Nova de Gaia skyline. This configuration allows to the people standing at the southern end of the platform, a field of view from the bridge of S.João until the Oporto riverside area. The square is intended to be a target of ownership and identification of the local population. The square is characterized by the simplification of forms.

ARCHITECTURE III | HOUSING COMPLEX PARQUE DAS CAMÉLIAS | OPORTO Architect Jorge Patricio 2006|2007
Block Model
The development and definition of a possible intervention on the site starts with an analysis, through photographs, drawings, sections and plans. After this step a proposal was developed. Several problems were identified, the existence of side gables of some buildings within the limits of the site, and the fact that the site is a result of the free space within a block, where all boundaries are the backs of surrounding buildings. In order to solve the side gables, two of the three buildings for housing are placed between them so that they cease to exist. The building facing the street Augusto Rosa is supported on the extremities resulting in a large span on the ground floor, creating a plaza, which is the main entrance of the block. The floor serves as an open plaza between the two blocks of housing with trade on
the ground floor around the square. On the eastern side there are two entrances to the block. One was treated as an introduction to the area that connects to a sports hall. At the other entrance there is a block of housing that solves the existing gables and is inserted into the visual axis connecting east and west from where it is possible to see all the extension of the site.

ARCHITECTURE IV | HOUSE FOR ARCHITECT RUA DA VITÓRIA | OPORTO Architect Michele Cannatà 2007|2008
Model
Architecture IV under the guidance of Architect Michele Cannatà characterized by the approach of various scales and also issues construction techniques. The first work was the elaboration of a house in the historic center of Oporto, for a young architect, including an atelier and two rooms to let. The second work was a kiosk, where more than the design was intended to dominate construction technical issues. The third work was a “multidisciplinary” building with various valences of cultural nature, developed in a conceptual form. The final work was a hotel, developed from a conceptual approach, covering a natural course of project development until the scale of detail.

ARCHITECTURE V CAIS DO OURO
| SWIMMING POOL | OPORTO
Architect Jo達o Carreira 2008|2009
Model
Architecture V, is characterized by a single project development and aims to draw up a medium-sized building, from site analysis, concept proposal, project execution and conciliation with infrastructures. In this case the exercise objective is to develop an indoor pool on the banks of the Douro River in Oporto, offering opportunities of contact between the city and the river. The idea is to create an artificial morphology, rising from the river to the margin, like a rock formation that is characteristic of the Douro River, where disguised through pathways arises a swimming pool. The exercise is designed as a metaphor of the cave, a place of refuge and contact with the river, more than a building, a new space in the city.

GRADUATION PROJECT GIUSEPPE TERRAGNI’S “DANTEUM” EXTENSION ROMAN FORUM | ROME Architect João Carreira 2009
DANTEUM sections
For the Giuseppe Terragni’s “Danteum” extension a mandatory prerequisite for the development of the work is: “the maximum of expression is to be obtained with the minimum of rhetoric, the maximum of emotion with the minimum of decorative or symbolic adjectives.” This was the basis of Terragni in the development of the project and it should be maintained to its extension. The extension follows the same rules of the “Danteum”. The Danteum consists of a rectangle of gold where the long side is equal to the short side of the “Basilica of Maxentius” and with the same angle to the “Via dei Fori Imperiali”, the extension is divided in two spaces connected by a path. The first space is a rectangle of gold where the long side is equal to the short side of the “Danteum” with the same angle on the “Via Cavour”. The second space also a rectangle of
gold is on the opposite side of the “Via dei Fori Imperiali”, where the long side is equal to the short side of the first room. This second room will not repeat the same angle on the “Via dei Fori Imperiali”, instead aligns itself parallel to the “Foro di Cesare”. This breaks the rule of the composition and serves to mark the end of the golden rectangle decomposition exercise, thereby closing an assembly formed by the Basilica of Maxentius, the Danteum, the first and the second spaces. This geometric definition of the spaces creates a sense of unity between the two sides of the “Via dei Fori Imperiali”. This gesture is essential to restructure the forum complex. In this work is intended that the ruins become “Forums” again and lose the character of museum. So the spaces represent the meaning on which they were built, not reproducing the space but its essence.
Connecting all the ruins so that the “Via dei Fori Imperiali” cease to be an obstacle and become an element of the set. The access to the first room is made between “Danteum” loose wall and its entrance, this pathway appears as a new road, a new route that has the “Danteum” as “pórtico”, developing in the same direction of the “Via dei Fori Imperiali”, going underground approaching the ruins through a staircase equal to the “Danteum” exit. Following this route, the passage to the first space is not done directly. There is a gallery that purports to represent the existing galleries in the “Foro della Pace”. The gallery lighting is done through openings into the room and through skylights. Its form intends to represent a “column of light”, giving emphasis to emptiness. This idea of “column of light” is intended to represent the intangible nature of memory, something we can identify but which is not palpable, is fickle, uncontrollable and always different. At the moment we entered the room we found several ruins, fragments of memory. The space is limited by the ruin of the wall that divided the “Foro di Nerva” of the “Foro della Pace” where there is a conserved passage in its entirety. This will be the entry in all the forums. From the moment you pass through this door we are led by a path in weathering steel, to another passage to the ruin of the “Foro di Augusto”. At this point the route turns into a wall where there is an opening that directs our gaze to the Forum of Trajan reinforcing this axis. From here we are led through a horizontal blade to a passage of a tunnel, through Via dei Fori Imperiali, which leads us to a passage for another ruin, reconstructing a very important connection of the “Foro di Augusto” and “Foro di Cesare”. In the end of this tunnel is
the
second space of the extension. This space is bounded by a plane of weathering steel in the floor and a wall, that is the culmination of the blade that has brought us here. This space represent pause, there is a passage to the “Foro di Nerva”, and on the other side, a connection to the “Foro di Cesare” and the “Foro Romano”. An important feature is the unity and continuity of any intervention, for this reason a single material is used in all elements other than ruins, the weathering steel. The choice of this material is mainly due to the fact that the patina is controlled and immediate, allowing the integration of new elements in contact with the ruins. In conclusion, the project results in a journey marked by three different spots of different character, a path that results in unity and restructuring the Roman Forum. Reference points are created that allow a different position on the ruins, creating a new memory of this place.

BAHAMAS DESIGN CHALLENGE MULTI-GENERATIONAL HOME | BAHAMAS Tiago Vieira and Filipa Figueira 2009

The project starts from a strong idea, the maintenance of the natural local environment, in a way that the natural characteristics get greater importance. When we start from this idea of intervention in the site, the adopted attitude is the manipulation of the morphology of the terrain, the natural and architectonic elements, in order to obtain the desired morphology. Although the natural character of the site is an important element to maintain our objective is not to camouflage or conceal the house, so the several volumes are designed with very rigid and geometric rules. The five volumes match the proportion of a golden section rectangle, subdivided in five proportional parts; this proportion is repeated in several elements of the project and the plans organization. The conceptual idea of the project is the creation of a “cave”
where the house is sheltered, creating three distinct spaces but with a very strong relationship, the inside, the sheltered exterior space and the complete outside space. The relationships between these three spaces create different feelings, when a person walks by the different parts of the house, and gives a great variety of atmospheres and different opportunities of living the space. It is the growing of multiple architectonic experiences with the application of primary architectural elements, volumes, surfaces and light. The constructive system is a concrete structure, because aside the great technical efficiency it possesses a tectonic aesthetic, essential to the project. The white concrete elements should be kept visible, reinforcing the idea of “cave”, and elements sculpted from the site creating the forms. The “type”
outside wall of the volumes is made of an exterior wall of white concrete, the bath insulation and another concrete wall on the inside. Creating a similar language in the inner spaces and the exterior but sheltered spaces, so that this last is experienced as interior and livable areas. To ensure a continuity of the elements, the floor is always wood. As the volumes are sheltered, they never suffer from excessive sun light projection, so the temperature is never higher than the natural shadow temperature. This allows using a system of natural ventilation throw the opening of the windows.
