Airlines and airports have always been means of international transportation, trade, business as well as cultural exchange. For centuries, they have helped connect millions of people millions of miles away from each other. However, despite being consider the iconic benchmarks of countries’ or cities’ economy and technology, most of the airports stand merely transit points, where people come and go, passing by just in minutes. As time passed, very few airports became preeminent and attracting people, while many others showed inefficient in operation, which made them shut down and left vacant.
Vacancy do create opportunities for redevelopment. In this project, we would like to imagine how an abandoned airport in a coastal city of Nha Trang (Vietnam) can be redesigned and transformed. Located near many international transportation routes, Nha Trang is endowed with great advantages of connections on all land, sea, and air. The city attracts travelers around the world by the beautiful tropical white sandy beach, blue water sea and fascinating vernacular coastal lifestyles. To be fair, Nha Trang tourist is growing, but didn’t grow well enough to join the party with other coastal ‘holiday heavens’ in the region (Bali, Phuket, etc), or to its own potential. The city lacks of attentiongrabbing activities to brand it an outstanding spot of the international vacation industry. This project is the proposal about how an outdated point of transit would become an Asia Pacific world-class destination of international cultural meetings and events, in the CITY OF COASTAL CULTURE AND TOURISM.

Nha Trang airfield was opened in 1945. Once being used as a military base in Vietnam War, its facilities are opened for civil use, operating domestic routes in Vietnam from 1975, before being permanently closed today.

            the ECO FLOW
Taking advantages of one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, the parcels in the West of waterfront Tran Phu Street are filling with high-end hotels and other tourism services. Ironically, these high-rises unintentionally become an artificial barrier between ocean and the people of this city, who have an impression that the beach is designed for wealthy tourists from far away, not local people.
We hereby consider the 240 hectare Nha Trang Airport site in the heart of Nha Trang city as an opportunity to provide a large open space with the breath of ocean to local people. The “ECO FLOW” Park, which pierces parallel to the existing airport runway, is the solution in how the coastal open spaces can be linked to the new city downtown.

This will be the place for daily communal activity of local inhabitants, as well as tourist cultural events such as exhibitions and parades. This is the place where local culture and inhabitants meets with international events and people, in the city of Marine Culture and Tourism.
The “ECO FLOW” park will penetrates eastern breezes from the ocean deep into the urban spaces, improving the microclimate and comfort of the area in the specific and whole city in general, which is significantly important to a coastal city dedicated to tourism. The canal connecting the river to the Nha Trang Bay will also help improve water mediating and flood control. On the other hand, the Eco Flow is secure from tropical hurricanes and storm surges, thanks to a series of island acting as wind and wave barriers in the eastern shore.
