Consultancy Case: Mars, Incorporate

12

The client • Mars Incorporated is a private company, the world’s leading chocolate manufacturer and the 3rd largest cocoa buyer. The challenge • As one of the largest cocoa buyers in the world, Mars takes its corporate sustainability seriously. As soaring demands increased production worldwide, Mars sought to ensure more sustainable cacao production for farmers. The challenge was to establish a comprehensive, contextually sensitive strategy and monitoring system for various countries. The solution • MDF designed and operationalised a global corporate sustainability strategy tailored to each country and a metrics monitoring system to measure the successes and challenges of implementing the programme. We built the capacities of the country M&E teams and reviewed management structures and systems to facilitate smooth implementation.

The result • Mars now features a cocoa corporate sustainability strategy that became the benchmark for the CocoaAction Initiative; an industrywide sustainability initiative. Furthermore, the automated metrics monitoring system gives Mars’ management an overview of their corporate sustainability action results through an online ‘dashboard’ to facilitate decision-making. MDF was asked to further assist the CocoaAction Initiative.

Consultancy Case: CBM Vietnam Country Plan 14

The client • CBM is an international development organisation, committed to improving the quality of life of people with disabilities in the poorest communities of the world. The challenge • MDF was asked to co-develop the 5-year Master Country Plan for CBM Vietnam. In 2014 Vietnam ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, leading to increased opportunities for development initiatives in this area. Besides the changing policy environment, CBM Vietnam also has to deal with a changing donor environment as Vietnam becomes an emerging market. The solution • MDF worked together with CBM Vietnam to study the current situation of persons with disabilities, the current activities of CBM, and the policies that influence disability inclusion in Vietnam. MDF also had consultation meetings with the CBM advisors, government officials and development partners to ensure that everyone’s voice was heard in the development of the country plan.

The result • The Master Country Plan presents CBM with a direction in terms of their contribution to disability inclusion in Vietnam. This will allow them to achieve significant changes in the process towards a more equal and inclusive society, and a brighter future for persons with disabilities.

Consultancy Case: Zardozi - Markets for Afghan Artisans 16

The client • Zardozi is an Afghan NGO assisting some 5000 of the poorest, marginalised illiterate women in rural areas of Afghanistan to develop market-related skills and linkages. The challenge • Zardozi's programme had grown to the extent that their existing monitoring systems were no longer coping with the increasing volume of clients and market data. Furthermore there was a need to systematise and rationalise the burden of data collection and analysis across four remote regional offices. The solution • MDF undertook a series of missions to Afghanistan in order to understand the issue in depth and to make recommendations with Zardozi’s future ambitions in mind. This involved working closely with the project management team and with the M&E specialist in particular. Field visits were made to several of the regional offices where we were able to meet the direct beneficiaries of the programme, the underprivileged women in poor rural communities in Afghanistan.

The result • Together with Zardozi's M&E and management team, MDF developed an interim information management system, rationalised the need for data collection and streamlined the processes. The emphasis was on sampling and on qualitative collection methods such as Most Significant Change. MDF later developed a tailored M&E and open source MIS solution utilising cloud technology.
