Boy have we had wonderful weather this fall! I hope everyone’s been out riding like crazy. My bike’s been down with a dead battery and I’ve been too crazy busy to get a new one just yet. But I will – soon. I want to take advantage of this beautiful weather before it leaves! This month, we’re pleased to have “our buddy” Outlaw Dave on the cover. It’s been long in coming… and we can think of no nice guy. Back in 2009, when Mean Gene Kelton started writing for us, Outlaw Dave was highlighted in Kelton’s “Black Leather Blues” article. Sadly, in December 2010, he wrote his last article for us and then we lost him in a tragic car accident. Not mentioned in the article, but important to myself and Bob, is the guitar we have loaned to Dave for display at Outlaw Dave’s Worldwide Headquarters. Bob and I attended one of the two memorial fundraisers held in February 2011. We were lucky enough to win the guitar raffle. The guitar was signed by each of “The Die Hards”, Mean Gene’s band; family and close friends; and those who purchased a raffle ticket, including yours truly. At last month’s Thunder Roads Texas BIKE NIGHT, we presented the guitar to Dave, along with a framed version of our February 2011, memorializing Mean Gene Kelton (see the picture on page 30). In this issue, we also highlight some of the many events Thunder Roads Texas folks have attended. We’ll have more in a future issue, as we close out the fall riding season and various toy runs. If you’re interested in sending in photos of events you’ve attended, please do! We appreciate reader submissions (as with the one about the Buffalo Soldiers annual convention). Exhaust Systems for the 21st Century wo Wheel Thunder has tested and written about exhausts from several different manufacturers. There is one manufacturer that really stands out. That means that they might not be able to produce the best motorcycle exhaust pipes possible. They may have used a simpler or easier-to-manufacture design rather than the best design. They are constricted by emissions regulations, leading to an exhaust that may be a compromise. Price is the inventor and leading innovator of numerous patented and high-performance exhaust systems for Harley-Davidson and metric cruiser motorcycles. Numerous is truly the key word. Samson builds over 700 exhausts right here in the USA. Each one is subtly different. Timeless style and white-knuckle performance has made Samson a legend. Say It Ain’t So Joe… Say It Ain’t So he other day I was sitting around trying to figure out where Rainman hid the key to the beer refrigerator when the phone rang. It was my good buddy Harley Doc, better known as our associate editor Randy McCamey. We chatted on the phone for bit and I could tell there was something wrong with him. I thought maybe he was still pissed at me for hitting on his daughter not long ago but Doc said that wasn’t it. He had a much deeper issue troubling him. What was troubling him was all this scuttlebutt about Harley-Davidson Motorcycles no longer being100% made in the USA. I dropped the phone and fainted when I heard those horrible words. I refused to believe what he told me. I refused to accept it. No, No, No! Harley-Davidson Motorcycles have always been and always will be 100% made in America. Our very own heritage is at stake here. This is un-American if it’s true; a serious situation indeed.

As Americans, we take pride at being unsurpassed by any other nation. As Americans, we have always been on top; we produce the finest of everything. We have always been the top producing nation, making the very best goods and made with pride. Harley-Davidson motorcycles have always represented our status as bikers – American bikers – and Texas bikers. They are considered the “level” above all others. To ride a Harley-Davidson Motorcycle means to ride only the best. It goes so far that some M/C clubs will not let you in as a member unless you ride a Harley. On the other hand, some people have accused bikers of being preoccupied with their image and how the sound a Harley makes and the performance a Harley feeds that image. Harley’s often define bikers by the sound, the ride, and the thunder rumbling down the road as we approach – part of what makes us members of the bad boys club. We are untouchable!

I was in such a shock that Rainman woke me up by pouring a beer in my face. I immediately got back on the phone with Doc who filled me in on our previous conversation. Soon I began to understand what it was he was talking about. He said that when buying a Harley-Davidson these days, some people may have the misconception that all Harley’s are 100% American made. And that most Harley dealers continue to promote that Harley’s are 100% American made. Doc asked me to investigate the matter and write a report as to my findings. I wanted to get to the bottom of this matter fast because I could not accept the thought that Harley-Davidson motorcycles may not be American made.

So, after concluding intensive research there are a few things I found out. While I did not contact Harley-Davidson Motor Company directly, I found numerous sites, blogs, and other information concerning the matter. And what I discovered is that the Harley-Davidson Motor Company is no different than any other American corporation. They are in the business of building motorcycles to make a profit. In 2013 Harley-Davidson’s third quarter earnings were up 21%; about $162.7 million dollars in sales. In North America alone, sales were up 15.5%. Harley-Davidson shipped out over 264,000 motorcycles worldwide in 2013. That’s a lot of motorcycles folks!

Harley-Davidson has had a manufacturing plant in Bawal, India since 2011. The good news is the bikes made there do not get shipped to the US. Those bikes are sold in other parts of the world. But all of that still does not answer the basic question, “Are Harley-Davidson Motorcycles 100% made in the US?” The answer is no, they are not. HarleyDavidson motorcycles are 100% ASSEMBLED in the US and that fact is nothing new. Harley operates very similar to most car manufacturers. They have suppliers, sub-companies, and vendors who provide particular parts that are made here in the US and abroad. While Harley does not publish where all their parts, nuts, bolts, and electronics come from, the best estimates suggests that roughly 65% of Harley parts are made in the US with the remainder manufactured abroad. It is comforting to know that all the pieces are made to Harley-Davidson specifications. So, the whole process is not much different than buying a new Chevy or a new TV, or even the very computer I am typing this article on. One must come to realize that that is the way companies do business nowadays. There is one troubling aspect I did come across as I did my research. I found several complaints on blogs and forums about Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts and aftermarket parts being made in China. People have ordered certain replacement parts, opened up the boxes from Harley and found they are marked as Harley parts and labeled Made in China. That, in itself, seemed to be the biggest complaint. We all know that items made in China don’t always come with the best quality. So I took it to the streets and asked a few bikers their opinion on Harley’s not being 100% American made. I wanted to know, now knowing Harley’s are not 100% pure American bikes, will this stop us from buying a new Harley or will it keep us off our bikes? Will we bikers change our lifestyle because we ride a bike that is not totally 100% pure, through and through? The general consensus was the majority of bikers were not too much troubled with the knowledge of Harley’s no longer being 100% American pure. They seemed more concerned that their warranty would cover any trouble with the bike and that the overall quality of their Harley does not suffer. They are still willing to purchase and ride a HarleyDavidson motorcycle. Rest assure my friends, Harley Davidson is still an American company. They still employ Americans to build their motorcycles. They still sell them in American stores and dealerships. As popular as Harley-Davidson motorcycles are, and whatever we might think about parts of the bikes not being Made in America, I think the company – and the bikes – will be around for a long, long time. Bringing Rock ‘n Roll Sensibilities to Talk Radio DAVE AND RADIO He returned from the Army in the late 80s and started taking mass media classes at the University of Houston. He had always been fascinated by radio. When a part time job doing research with KFMK appeared on the bulletin board, he decided it was the job for him… the foot in the door. While he was bartending one time, supplementing his income, Eric Chase, a “famous voice” came into the bar. Chase worked at KRBE/KKZR. He told Dave, “You have a really good voice. Come see me.” Dave didn’t hesitate and he got a production department position with KKZR. It wasn’t too long and he was on the air. He worked KRBE, then off to Dallas for ABC Radio doing a syndicated show, then down to San Antonio. But he missed home. In 1992, Dave found a home at KLOL, working with Stevens & Pruett. After “KLOL blew up” he took a little time off. He went over to an upstart KIOL, but it didn’t last very long. During all these rock radio years, DJ time on the air was dwindling, with stations vying to play more music than the other. Dave didn’t like the 8-10 second snippets. They didn’t give him time to really engage with his interviewees or with the audience. What Dave found easy for him… to get on the air with other DJs, such as Walton & Johnson and Dean & Roj, in order to promote various charities he was involved in. He was so successful at it that people kept asking for advice on promoting their charities. It was here that Dave found a gap. In 2007, Dave made the transition over to talk radio. He took the concept of “active male lifestyle”, arranged to buy time on 950AM, KPRC. He had regulars, like Joe Rogan, to help with segments, like the “ride ‘n rally”. Sometimes Texas-based, Texas-focused, Texas PROUD!

raunchy, always masculine, the show covered various topics important to men, like hanging with exotic dancers and riding motorcycles! The show gained traction. At one point, he filled in for Walton & Johnson. Primarily, the plan was to host a “best of” during a two-week vacation for them. Dave took advantage and used some of the time to promote his charities. The station liked the response so much, they offered Dave the slot after Walton & Johnson. Then he moved to after lunch, then drive-time then evening, then drive-time… well, you get the picture!

DAVE AND “OUTLAW” During his time at KLOL, one of the station’s monikers was “Outlaw Radio”. He was just beginning his on-air persona. When he’d introduce himself, it was always, “Dave with Outlaw Radio”. At some point, the “Outlaw” took and “Outlaw Dave” was born. What makes it all the better… he has been known to brag that he’s been arrested all over… three continents, thus earning the title “Outlaw”.

DAVE AND BEST INTERVIEW When asked who his favorite interview was, he was very quick with an answer… Sammy Hagar, saying Hagar is the “biggest and warmest” interview he’s ever done. Very laid back and easy going. Hagar always remembered Dave by name when he saw him. When asked about ZZ Top, he said “of course, they’re local gods.”

DAVE AND HIS “CREED” Over the first years of his on-air career, Dave would start each show with a monologue about who he is, what he believes. After some time, he decided he needed a “creed”, something to end the show that would make people pause and reflect. Out of his monologues came, “Be the voice of reason in a sea of insanity; When you see a wrong, make it a right; and, if you get a chance to help another human being, just do it.” Each show is ended with this creed.

DAVE AND HONORS Over seven years going strong, including two years in a row as KPRC’s favorite host/program and this year, honored by the Houston Press as this year’s “Personality of the Year”. Last year, after three failed ballot attempts at the Texas Radio Hall of Fame, the board of directors voted to name him to the Hall of Honor, for “significant contributions” to Texas radio. This year, Dave has been named to the Texas Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will take place November 2 in Galveston. Sorry, folks… it’s already sold out! This is a big deal… out of 100 nominated, only 15 are inducted each year. When talking about his induction, Dave is quick to mention his radio mentors/idols who preceded him into the Hall, Colonel St. James, Mark Stevens and Jim Pruett, among others.

DAVE AND THE RANCH RIDE The Outlaw Dave Ranch Ride goes into its 11th year. In 2003, he visited Jim Pruett at his gun shop and asked, “How’s the ranch going?” Pruett answered, “Not as good as needed, after 2001. We need to do a ride.” They got together and started promoting it on the radio, saying all they need is 500 riders at $20 a head and they can raise $10,000. “Troll”, with the Northwest Chapter of the San Jacinto High Rollers, called into the show and said, “Do you know what you’re doing?” After a few heartbeats, the answer was basically “no”. From that point on, the San Jacinto High Rollers assist with every aspect of the ride, getting up to 1,700 riders from Stubbs Harley-Davidson in Houston down to the Lone Star Rally in Galveston. “I show up every year at 8am, and it’s all magically done,” says Dave.

To date, the ride has easily raised over $100,000 for the Stevens & Pruett Ranch. The Ranch is a non-profit that helps kids and horses. About the ranch… it started as a labor of love by friends, Stevens & Pruett. It’s had its highs and lows, but still works hard to offer the best in care to rescued horses and children who need some guidance.

When working out the details for the Ranch Ride, Dave says, “All they wanted in return was for me to play Santa and lead their annual toy run”. The Northwest San Jacinto High Rollers Toy Run is now in its 35th year. They start out at Honda of Houston on 290 and head out to the Boys & Girls Country, bikes full of toys and donations. One of the unique things about this toy run is the club gets a list of children and their ages ahead of time. As riders drop off toys and line up, Santa’s helpers wrap the presents for the kids. At the home, Outlaw Santa Dave rides in on his bike, addresses the kids and calls each one out by name to give them their presents. We, as spectators get to watch the kids tear into the gifts.

Long a supporter of first responders, Outlaw Dave has started the “First Responders Ride”. This year was the inaugural year. With the entry fee, riders get a commemorative ride T-shirt, an escorted ride and free entry to the Texas Association of First Responders (TAFR) annual Wild Game Cook Off. Many of the cookers offer up meals, beverages, and fun for rider participants.

DAVE AND THE BAR He had long bartended for a living, so he was already a bar fly. When he moved to San Antonio radio, his predecessor, Joe Anthony, had owned a pizza joint and promoted it on the air. Anthony realized that radio was a bit fickle and wouldn’t be there forever. So the pizza joint was his back up. Same with many other radio personalities Dave worked with. They had these side businesses as a “diversity of revenue”.

A friend, Davenport Duane, of the Davenport Lounges (Houston and Clear Lake) called Dave and said, “I’m going to do a franchise of martini bars” and asked Dave to join in. Dave went back with “I’ve got a concept…” They looked all over Houston for just the right spot. They found a small, old ice house. It literally opened during prohibition. It was known as the “little shack by the tracks’ because it backed onto the railroad, where they would get their ice from. This is one of the oldest ice houses in Houston. Today, Outlaw Dave’s Worldwide Headquarters host s the Thunder Roads Texas Central BIKE NIGHT, a “midnight circus” show on Saturdays, a car show every other Sunday, various other bike nights, and many charitable events. The bar is located on Washington, just off I-10, behind IHOP and open daily 11am-2am, serving up a full bar and gastro pub menu.
