For those art students who are more passionate, HSE offers those sequence courses which can be taken throughout all four years of high school. We were both fortunate enough to be involved in Art Day as board members of both Art Club and National Art Honor Society. Giving tours to the eighth graders was gratifying because we got to pass down all that we have learned and loved about art to the next gen-

ciety, the AP Art History teacher , and the photography teacher, stated that Art Day “helps showcase the talent of all the art students as east and promotes the art electives. Art is about the creative process and this special day allows us to celebrate that.” In addition to those involved in Art Day, we were able to hear the opinions of other students not involved. Kayla Menkes explained to us how it was “extremely compelling to get an insight into the hard work that gets put into e v e r y piece of artwork and get a ‘behind the scenes’ look at all of the creations that decorate our Ceramic students working on their pottery wheels. school.” (Photo courtesy of Chip Parker) It was eration of incoming freshman. AP Art History Presents Its 12th Hills East Mathletes Dominate at Annual Installation: The Light Trail Suffolk County Math Tournament Emily Disman

Some of the world’s greatest and most well-known artists base their own art on works of talented artists who have come before them. Diego Rivera and David Siqueiros, two of the greatest Mexican muralists, gained inspiration from José Posada. Jeff Koons, pop artist known for his oversized balloon animals, was inspired by Andy Warhol. The AP Art History students at High School East, creators of The Light Trail, used Kara Walker to inspire their very own installation. installation that is inspired by artwork they learned about in class. For the 12th annual installation, this year’s class used Walker’s Darkytown Rebellion as inspiration and kept her techniques and themes in mind when creating their own installation. The class was intrigued by Walker’s combination of colored lights and traditional silhouettes leading them to create an installation that embodied these characteristics. The class covered each window pane in the hallway behind the gym with colored polyvinyl film squares and rectangles, creating a spectrum of

The Half Hollow Hills High School East Mathletes is a renowned team that meets every Monday to practice for their intense, mathematics-based competitions with other schools. They compete in both online and face to face competitions against schools like High School West and Deer Park High School. der, violence, and identity to create her artwork. Darkytown Rebellion, an installation that depicts the struggles of people based on their race and gender through the use of silhouettes, is one of Walker’s most recognized installations. These figures help to depict the history of African Americans, as well as how they are stereotyped, in the United States. She wanted her work to be interactive, leading her to design it in a way that allowed viewers to become a part of the art by painting black silhouettes on a wall and projecting colored lights over the painting. This use of projected colors allows viewers to obscure and adjust the overall feeling of the painting in that when one walks in front of the projector, their shadow becomes another silhouette on the wall. Every year, Mrs. Uttendorfer’s AP Art History classes create an original

colors and patterns to illuminate the otherwise colorless and dull hallway. The colored sheets catch the sunlight that shines through the windows allowing the shadows of students and faculty to create their own forms on the wall, similar to Walker’s art. The Light Trail will ultimately help to connect everyone in the school community as no one person is defined by their appearance. All in all, this year’s installation connects all of the unique traits of the High School East community in a new and creative way. Both Kara Walker and the Art History installation teaches the lesson that deep down, we are all similar. They help to make viewers realize that people should not be judged solely based on their appearance, race, or gender. Lastly, both installations allow viewers to focus on their true identity and who they aspire to be.

Making Memories at the Senior Banquet Jolie Freedman & Mackenzie Gosset

the perfect way to reflect back on first semester and get excited about becoming second semester seniors as college acceptances roll in, and we begin to realize that we will go our separate ways very soon. The night was filled with dancing, eating, pictures, and hanging out with friends. At the end of the night, there was a montage of all of our pictures from throughout the first half of the year, which brought back amazing memories and a few tears. Just before the night came to a close, the coveted Senior superlatives were announced. The competition to win a senior superlative at HSE is fierce, and many students tend to campaign for themselves or their friends. With approximately 490 seniors, winning a superlative truly is an honor. On behalf of the Thunderbird, we’d like to congratulate all of the seniors who won a superlative this year. The much-loved tradition of Senior Banquet has come and gone for the class of 2018, but the memories will remain as we progress on the journey to graduation.

With just one semester left of high school, the senior class must take advantage of each of their last moments at High School East. Four amazing years of memories at HSE taught the senior class to make the most of our last semester of high school. To start off second semester the right way, High School East’s annual Senior Banquet was held on Friday, February 2nd in the East gym. The Senior Banquet is one of the biggest senior traditions at HSE. While there are many ways to embrace and celebrate being a senior, the Senior Banquet is the first senior-class only event held where all of the seniors can spend time together, aside from school hours, and reminisce on their high school experiences. In our opinions, the biggest concept we learned during first semester is that senior year is all about not taking anything for granted and uniting as one senior class. While everyone is excited for college and other future plans, it is vital to live in the moment and enjoy senior year before it is gone. The Senior Banquet was

Do you have a headache? Are you coughing or stuffy? Do you feel achy all over? Maybe you are feverish or incredibly tired? Did your symptoms come on very quickly? Well, it’s not “just a cold”... you may officially be a member of the club no one wants to be in this winter…. You may have the FLU!! According to MedicineNet.com, the flu, medically known as “influenza,” is caused by viruses which are classified into three types: A, B, & C. Influenza A & B are responsible for all of the horrible symptoms, while C is very mild and rarely causes any reaction. The flu is spread very easily. People infected with it can pass it to others from as little as six feet away. Doctors think that flu viruses are spread mainly when people with the flu cough, sneeze, or talk and the droplets mix with air. These dangerous droplets have the ability to pass into the mouths or noses of people who are nearby and possibly be inhaled into the lungs. A person might also get the flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth or nose. The virus has the ability to last on a surface or object for up to 48 hours, so avoiding exposure to the flu can be very difficult. Flu season, which generally runs from December thru March, peaks in late January/early February. The 2017/2018 season is the most intense one in the last 10 years, and it’s just starting to peak in the Northeast. Flu Intensity - the measure of how many catch the disease - is now widespread. Health departments in 49 states are reporting intense activity, and “sentinel sites” (emergency rooms, clinics, and doctor’s offices) in 39 states are reporting the same. Not only are more people catching the flu this year, but an alarming number of cases are also requiring hospitalization due to complications. Pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infections, and ear infections are examples of flu-related complications.

Post Millennials Thrive as Technology Advances Mackenzie Gosset

Click! Whoosh! Ding! These familiar sounds of technological notifications have dominated the sphere of sound as much of our species is in constant visual and auditory overload from electronic devices. The majority consists mostly of people who resemble us; people who were born into a world overshadowed by the use of and reliance on technology with everything literally at our fingertips. The 2000’s have, so far, provided people with even the smallest sense of direction the ability to travel anywhere they wish via a GPS, and people who had the slightest bit of curiosity immediately driven to the Google search engine in a matter of seconds. This group is known as Generation Z or the Post Millennials, and we certainly belong to this community. While older generations, such as Generation Y, view technology as a distraction, the Generation Z community sees automation as a valuable resource. Technology has not only wedged its way into our everyday routines, but it has revolutionized the way we carry out the most important everyday tasks such as educating students and traveling to where we need to go. When the hospitalization rate increases, so does the death rate. According to the article “This Flu Season Is the Worst in Nearly a Decade” published in The New York Times on January 26th, the death toll this season so far is at 37, with 27 of those in California and under the age of 65. Generally speaking, people over 65 and infants are the most susceptible to the flu, hospitalization, and death. However, this year, a new trend is emerging - people aged 50-64 are equally affected. Dr. Daniel Jernigan, Director of the Center for Disease Control influenza division, says “despite the late date, the agency still recommends Americans get a flu shot.” Some regions are running out of vaccines, but it is simple to locate stock in any area by logging onto vaccinefinder.org. As of the last week of January, there is a critical shortage of Tamiflu, the only antiviral drug that can treat and shorten the time it takes for the flu to run its course. For Tamiflu to be effective, it must be started within 72 hours of the first symptom. For many people, especially teens, that window of time passes before they even tell their parents they aren’t feeling well. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the government agency that works to protect Americans from health and safety threats, is working to get more Tamiflu out in areas that are most affected. Are you asking yourself “how can I prevent the flu?” Well, there are some basic steps you should follow. Wash your hands frequently with hot water and soap, avoiding touching any parts of your face throughout the day, and avoid close contact with anyone who has symptoms. If you find yourself sick with the flu, get a lot of rest, take over the counter pain relief, like Tylenol, and drink lots of liquids. Hopefully, the flu will pass you by, but if you do get it, follow the necessary steps to heal as quickly as possible.

Rather, I advocate for the pure use of technology and oppose users with unethical intentions. Particularly I strive to be an upstander against cyberbullying and a phone confiscator when others are driving. engineer Elon Musk. The company designs, manufactures, and launches spacecrafts and other advanced rockets. Elon Musk’s motive behind creating SpaceX was to revolutionize spacetime technology and, more importantly, allow humans to be capable of living efficiently on other planets. SpaceX is not a government project; they are a privately owned company, thus making it harder for them to do everything to the extent they would wish as it is still a controversial topic. NASA has previously relied on Russian Soyuz spacecraft to carry astronauts to and from the space station, but now they have broken that sole dependency on Russia by awarding a contract to SpaceX in 2014. As of now, SpaceX has launched multiple projects, including the Falcon 9, the Falcon Heavy, and the Dragon. The Falcon Heavy has been called the world’s most powerful rocket, the Dragon is the first privately owned spacecraft to go to the space station, and the Falcon 9 is the world’s first orbital class rocket capable of reflight. SpaceX currently has 50 completed missions, with another 51 planned missions for the near future. They are planning to become more involved and coordinated with NASA, as SpaceX could provide a great service in transporting resources and astronauts into outer space. NASA wants to be able to depend on SpaceX to provide them with a taxi service to and from outer space. Recently, lawmakers have questioned the safety of the commercial crew capsule. In response, NASA has

con 9 rocket. They will then demand at least 7 successful unmanned flights before allowing astronauts aboard; but, there have been failures. SpaceX, however, was not alone in recovering from failed launches. Boeing, another company who was involved in potential contracts with NASA, is also recovering from failed launch attempts. After a period of time, NASA dropped Boeing from the space cargo competition, thus giving its contracts to SpaceX. In recent launches of the Falcon 9 in the space cargo program between NASA and SpaceX, there have been multiple explosions and failed missions that have prevented supplies from reaching the space station, which has enough supplies to last them through October. Due to this incident, all Falcon 9 flights have been suspended until further conclusions can be reached through detailed investigations. Although NASA is disappointed with these recent failures in resupplying the international space station, they accounted for this loss in cargo when first designing the program and will continue the operation until they can classify the mission as safe to relaunch. While there were three failed cargo attempts in such a short period of time, Elon Musk claims that they may have detected their recurring problem. Musk tweeted,”There was an overpressure event in the upper stage liquid oxygen tank. Data suggests counterintuitive cause.” If that’s the case, it could be a quick fix and could potentially send SpaceX and NASA right back on track.

the eastern seaboard where high winds triggered power outages in parts of New England and whiteout conditions occured along the immediate coast from Maine to the Virginia tidewater. The snowfall reached record highs in many areas, and major coastal flooding was a nightmare for hundreds of thousands of residents. Here on Long Island, people witnessed powerful winds as well as up to 13 inches of snow. What caused such a massive storm, and what is the scientific basis for such an event--something known as a “bomb cyclone”? What makes a storm a bomb is determined by how quick the atmospheric pressure falls. Falling atmospheric pressure is a characteristic of all storms, but by definition, the barometric pressure must drop by at least 24 millibars in 24 hours for a storm to be called a bomb cyclone; the formation of such a storm is called bombogenesis. Deep drops in barometric pressure occur when a region of warm air meets one

commonly referred to as a nor’easter. This is exactly what occurred with winter storm Greyson between January 4th and 5th. Leading up to the storm, the entire East Coast, from Maine to Florida, saw temperatures much lower than usual. This was due to an Arctic Chill that cooled the atmosphere anywhere from 15 to 25 degrees colder than usual. As a result, Floridians were shocked with temperatures in the 40s, while Mainers faced wind chills of up to negative 100 degrees! Then, when the storm hit, it resulted in a combination of extreme cold temperatures and warm temperatures, thus creating a bomb cyclone. Some scientists studying the connection between climate change and cold spells such as this most recent weather event, which occur when cold Arctic air dips south, say that the two may be related. However, the importance of such a relationship is not fully clear as of yet.

Innovation Illuminates Las Vegas Jacob Kaye

The International Consumer Electronics Show, also known as CES, is a trade show organized by Consumer Technology Association held annually in January in Las Vegas, Nevada. Each year, CES introduces new innovative products ready to roll out onto the market. This year’s newest introductions were as awe-inspiring as those of past years and, in most cases, take technology to a level higher than we’ve ever before experienced. One of the most innovative products was LG’s rollable 65 inch 4k televi-

sion. It rolls up like a poster and can be easily moved. Another advance in the area of television is called “The Wall,” a 146 inch TV by Samsung that uses modular MicroLED technology. While advanced televisions played a part in this year’s CES, this year’s event was mainly about the rise of Alexa, Amazon’s digital assistant. Alexa is now being integrated into TV’s, ceiling fans, and smart locks. Furthermore, tech companies Sonos and Ecobee have released products with a built-in Alexa feature. Similar to Alexa, Google

Assistant is also being integrated into many products. Something revealed at CES that has never been done before is a fingerprint sensor being built into the display of a phone. Both Apple and Samsung have attempted this feat, but have failed. It was, however, accomplished, except by Vivo. During the 2017 Super Bowl Halftime Show, Intel flew 250 drones to light up the sky. This was replicated in Las Vegas during the 2018 CES. The drones were programed using Intel animation software. Every movement

is perfectly timed and coordinated by Intel. In the sky, controlled by a single pilot, they are locked into place so they don’t move. The manager of Intel’s drone light shows, Natalie Cheung, said “It’s a new way of storytelling in the sky...It’s a different aspect of how you can merge tech and art together.” This is a big step for what’s to come in the future of entertainment. All participants at this year’s CES were intriguing and innovative; technology truly is advancing faster than we can imagine!

President Trump’s Address Announces that “The State of Our Union is Strong” Carson Leifer

Staff Writer

Looking to heal a deeply divided nation, President Donald J. Trump delivered his first State of the Union Address, outlining his agenda for “building a safe, strong, and proud America.” The president spoke of unity, as well as his administration’s accomplishments in its first year and its goals moving forward in 2018. The first official State of the Union address of the Trump presidency took place on the night of Tuesday, January 30th. There, he addressed all three branches of government, including both chambers of Congress, the Supreme Court, and his cabinet. The president spoke for about an hour and twenty minutes, making it the third-longest State of the Union Address in history. He was interrupted with applause 115 times; there were also more than 70 standing ovations. The Constitution requires the president to provide Congress with a periodic update on the current state of the Union and recommendations for any new legislation. However, it was submitted as a written response until 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson delivered his address as a speech directly to Congress. Though President Trump spoke before Congress last year, it was considered a joint Congressional address, since it was only more than a month into his presidency. The president began his address with a strong effort to unify the nation around American strength and resilience. He praised the heroes from this past year’s natural disasters and those who risked their lives to save others, saying that “we have seen the beauty of America’s soul.” He mentioned the courageous actions of Coast Guard Petty Officer Ashlee Leppert, who saved more than forty lives during Hurricane Harvey, as well as firefighter David Dahlberg, who saved the lives of sixty children in the midst of the California wildfires. Both of these first responders were in attendance as guests of the First Lady. One of the most powerful moments of the speech came shortly after this, when President Trump commended the strength and swift recovery of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana, who was shot this past June at a Republican Congressional baseball practice. The chamber burst out with applause and excitement, and the reaction of Scalise was pure jubilation. The president praised Congress’s response to the shooting, asserting that they all came together as one to represent the American people. President Trump continued his efforts to unify the nation through his address, saying “the state of our Union is strong because our people are strong. And together, we are building a safe, strong, and proud America.” President Trump shifted away from a unifying tone in order to speak about the accomplishments of his administration’s first year. He said that more than 2.4 million jobs had been created since he took office, and the economy has seen a new rise in wages. The president mentioned unemployment, claiming that unemployment rates for both African-Americans and Hispanic Americans are at record lows. He also spoke about the recent surge in the stock market since his election. President Trump continued listing his accomplishments by mentioning the positive effects of the recently passed Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which has reduced the corporate tax rate, as well as taxes for millions of Americans. The president boasted about the impact it has had on American workers, including new bonuses for millions of employees. He mentioned that many companies also plan to invest in America and open up new facilities, such as Apple, which will create more than

20,000 new jobs. The attention in the room quickly shifted towards a twelve-year-old boy named Preston Sharp. Preston started a movement, as described by President Trump, that has placed 40,000 flags at the graves of veterans. The entire chamber applauded the young boy, showing great ap-

for immigration reform, saying that too many lives and low wage jobs have been taken by the influx of illegal immigrants. He called for stronger borders to protect America, saying “Americans are dreamers too.” This was a clear reference to recent discussions over the statuses of more than 800,000 DACA recipients, who will

preciation for his tremendous deed. The president spoke about the importance of having a competent Department of Veteran Affairs, as well as the effectiveness of Congress’s newly passed VA Accountability Act, which allows for the department to fire any employee that fails to effectively care for the nation’s veterans. He continued to speak about his administration’s accomplishments, mentioning the elimination of economic regulations, America being energy independent with a reliance on clean coal, and new automobile manufacturing plants being opened by Chrysler, Toyota, and Mazda in the United States. President Trump laid out his agenda for 2018, as well as what his administration hopes to accomplish. He spoke about allowing people to seek cures that they desperately need, lowering the price of prescription medications, and restructuring trade deals with other nations. The president discussed the importance of passing a new infrastructure bill, calling for at least $1.5 trillion to build new roads, bridges, and railways for Americans. He talked about prison reform and providing former inmates with second chances. President Trump mentioned his hope for America’s success, saying “we can lift our citizens from welfare to work, from dependence to independence, and from poverty to prosperity.” The most controversial and highly anticipated component of President Trump’s speech came when he discussed his desire for immigration reform. He called for more secured borders to stop the flow of drugs and illegal immigrants into the country, including those involved in violent gangs. One of the most emotional moments of the night came when the president shifted his attention towards four individuals: the parents of two young girls from Long Island who were murdered by the notorious MS-13 gang. Trump assured them by saying, “Evelyn, Elizabeth, Freddy, and Robert, tonight, everyone in this chamber is praying for you. Everyone in America is grieving for you, and 320 million hearts are breaking for you.” Nearly everyone in attendance was moved by the obvious devastation of the girls’ parents, and they were given a standing ovation. However, some members of the Democratic Party, including the Congressional Black Caucus, chose not to stand and honor them. The president continued with his calls

be deported if Congress does not pass an immigration bill by the March 5th deadline. More than 35 of these people were in attendance at the address as guests of Democratic lawmakers. The four pieces to the president’s ideal immigration bill, as mentioned in the speech, include a pathway to citizenship for 1.8 million illegal immigrants that came to this country as children, a secured border, an end to the visa lottery system, and an end to chain migration. President Trump shifted his focus towards the military, calling for an increase in funding for the armed forces. He asked for the modernization of our nuclear arsenal, saying that he wants a military so strong that other nations would be discouraged from provoking it. While mentioning the hope for a time when all countries will disable their nuclear weapons, he said that is not yet possible. He praised the brave actions of Army Staff Sergeant Justin Peck, who risked his life to save his comrade. The president spoke about keeping the military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba open, a reversal of the plans of former President Barack Obama, who pushed for the prison to be closed. President Trump called on Congress to stop funding nations that do not share the same goals as the United States, a response to the international community’s condemnation of his controversial decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. He also discussed sanctions that his administration has imposed on brutal regimes, such as those in Venezuela and North Korea. While mentioning North Korea, the president spoke about Otto Warmbier, an American college student who was imprisoned in the Communist nation and ultimately died in June of 2017, just six days after returning to the United States in a coma. Otto’s parents, Fred and Cindy, were present at the State of the Union and received praise from the president and the chamber. The most powerful moment of the night came when President Trump spoke about the strength and courage of Ji Seong-ho, who traveled thousands of miles on crutches through China and southeast Asia to seek freedom from the North Korean regime. Seong-ho proudly held his crutches in the air to show his freedom and received a roaring reaction from nearly everyone in attendance. The address ended just how it started, with a clear effort to unite the nation.

President Trump spoke about America’s destiny, from its early colonial days to beyond. He discussed prominent leaders in our nation’s history, from George Washington to Abraham Lincoln and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The most unifying and patriotic moment from the entire address came when the president spoke about the significance of the very building that they were in, the Capitol: “And freedom stands tall over one more monument: this one, this Capitol. This living monument to the American people. A people whose heroes live not only in the past, but all around us, defending hope, pride, and the American way.” Immediately following, “USA!” chants broke out, demonstrating a strong, unifying American force, which the president hoped to deliver all along. The American public, according to a CBS poll, overwhelmingly approved of President Trump’s address. The poll showed that 75% of Americans approved it, with only 25% disapproving it. The poll also did a breakdown of the speech’s approval rating by political party; 97% of Republicans and 72% of Independents approved it, but only 43% of Democrats felt the same way. Numerous Democratic lawmakers expressed their discontent with the president during his address. Many Democrats chose not to applaud or stand at many moments throughout the speech, even those that called for unity. The Congressional Black Caucus chose not to stand or applaud when the president spoke of record low unemployment rates for the African-American community, triggering many in the media to question why. Democratic Congressman Luis Gutierrez of Illinois was seen walking out of the speech at the end during the “USA” chants. He later stated that it was not a form of protest, but it was because he was late for a television interview. One Democrat that did support President Trump on Tuesday night was Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, who applauded the president at moments when almost no other Democrat did. Manchin is up for reelection in 2018 in his home state that voted overwhelmingly for Trump in 2016. The State of the Union Address was not just a big moment for President Trump, but it was also an opportunity for a rising the star in the opposition party, Congressman Joe Kennedy III of Massachusetts. Kennedy was selected to give the Democratic Party’s response to the State of the Union. A response speech to the State of the Union Address by the opposing political party has been a tradition since 1966, when Republican Senator Everett Dirksen of Illinois and Republican Congressman Gerald Ford of Michigan gave a televised response to President Lyndon B. Johnson’s address. The young congressman is the grandson of former Senator Robert Kennedy and the great-nephew of former President John F. Kennedy. Joe Kennedy III described President Trump and his administration as “bullies” and looked to warm up to immigrants and gain their support by speaking part of the address in Spanish. In his first State of the Union Address, President Trump looked for unity, while also establishing his legislative agenda for the upcoming year. The tone of his speech was bold and patriotic, and for the most part, it served as a unifying force in the chamber. However, just as many other calls for unity this past year, it does not take long until bipartisanship and division takes over Capitol Hill and our daily lives. Although it is presumably unlikely that this sense of patriotic harmony will last, it is certain that a hurting nation hopes it will.

Trump Declares “Jerusalem is Israel’s Capital”

President Donald J. Trump made international headlines in early December by carrying out one of his biggest and most consequential campaign promises: recognizing the holy city of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. In a speech on December 6th, 2017, President Trump announced that the United States would recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and that the United States would move its embassy from Tel Aviv to the disputed capital. “I have determined that it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel,” he proclaimed. President Trump’s decision did not come without controversy and international consequences. However, this conflict is nothing new to American politics. In October of 1995, Congress passed the Jerusalem Embassy Act, which stated that the United States would support Jerusalem as the undisputed capital, and that they would provide funding to move the United States Embassy to Jerusalem within five years. Nevertheless, President Bill Clinton signed a waiver every six months delaying the move in order to prevent potential conflicts, despite his campaign promise in 1992, which stated that his administration would support Jerusalem as the capital of the Jewish state. During his 2000 presidential campaign, George W. Bush promised that he would finally move the embassy to Jerusalem, but never did so. Instead, just like his predecessor, Bush signed a waiver every six months to delay the move. Throughout his presidency, President Obama also signed a waiver every six months to postpone the controversial embassy move, even though he stated that Jerusalem was the capital of Israel during his 2008 campaign. President Trump’s actions are different. He is the first sitting American president to officially recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and announce that the embassy would be moved there. In June of 2017, he signed another six month waiver on the move, which the White House described as a window to negotiate peace between the Israelis and Palestinians. The conflicts in the Middle East are nothing new, as fighting between the Palestinians and Jews has been going on for almost an entire century. Following World War I and the fall of the Ottoman Empire, Great Britain took control of land in the Middle East, including the area that makes up present-day Israel and Palestine. In 1936, the Arabs rebelled against the British, as well as the Jews in neighboring land. As a result, the British formed the Peel Commision with the goal of investigating the cause of the fighting, and they soon concluded that the Jews and Arabs wanted to govern the same land. The Peel Commision believed that the best solution was to create two independent states, one for the Jews and one for the Arabs. The split was heavily in favor of the Arabs, with the British offering 80% of the disputed territory to Palestine, while the Jews would get the remaining 20%. Despite the significantly smaller portion of land offered, the Jews voted to accept the proposal. However, the Arabs rejected it and resumed their fight. The Arabs went on to reject many other peace offers. About ten years later, in 1947, the British went to the newly founded United Nations in hopes of finding a solution to the rise in vio-

lence and regional tensions. The UN decided that dividing the land was the best option. In November of 1947, the UN voted to create a two state solution, and again the Jews accepted the offer, but the Arabs again rejected it. As a result, war broke out between the Arabs and Jews. Soon after, Jordan, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, and Syria joined the conflict, but they all failed, as Israel miraculously won the war, and the Jews began to form

even pizza places. Israel, however, still tried to make peace, but the new Palestinian leader, Mahmoud Abbas, rejected land from Israel for the fifth time. Although new offers were rejected, Israel still gave up Gaza to the Palestinians in 2005. The region was soon overtaken by Hamas, a terrorist organization, in 2007. Both the Palestinians and Israelis believe they are entitled to Jerusalem, since it is one of the holiest city in Judaism, Christian-

their new nation. In 1949, most of the land set aside for the Arabs became occupied by Jordan. This land was the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Twenty years later, in 1967, the Arabs, this time being led by Egypt with the help of Syria and Jordan, again attempted to destroy the Jewish state. This conflict, known as the Six-Day War, was won by Israel. As a result, Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip became controlled by the Israelis. In effort to make peace, debate spread throughout Israel over what to do with the land. Many Israelis wanted to give the Gaza Strip to Egypt and the West Bank to Jordan with the hope that it could bring peace. However, others wanted to the return the land to the Arabs. The Arabs started to refer to themselves as Palestinians in an attempt to unify and build their own Arab nation there. A few months later, the Arab League met in Sudan, where the infamous “Three No’s” were issued. There, they stated “No peace with Israel, no recognition of Israel, and no negotiations with Israel.” And for the third time, a two state solution was rejected. In 2000, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak met with Palestinian Liberation Organization Chairman Yasser Arafat, along with US President Bill Clinton, at Camp David in Maryland. The Camp David Summit had the goal of forming a new two-state plan. Barak offered Arafat all of Gaza and more than 90% of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem as its capital, but Arafat and Palestine again rejected the offer. Bill Clinton described the event by stating that Arafat was “here 14 days and said ‘no’ to everything.” Arafat, like the leaders before him, rejected any offer that gave any land to Israel. Violence again broke out, but this time with suicide bombings, ultimately killing and injuring hundreds of Israelis. These bombings were done in buses, social halls, and

ity, and Islam. Both nations believe that this holy city belongs to them and should be their undisputed capitals. One of the biggest parts of the conflict is still the status of Jerusalem, since both groups view the city as important to their religions and cultures. The partition of the holy city was believed to have been the potential final piece of the peace process between Israel and Palestine. However, with the United States’ new recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital, the Palestinians have grown frustrated and may have lost faith in ever reaching an agreement. In response to President Trump’s announcement, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas cancelled his meeting with Vice President Mike Pence just prior to Pence’s visit to the region in December 2017. Abbas described the Trump Administration’s decision as “a declaration of withdrawal from the role it has played in the peace process.” Many protests also broke out in Jerusalem, leading to violent clashes between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian protesters. The entire Arab world also responded to Trump’s decision by protesting in their own countries and burning images of the president, as well as American and Israeli flags. Disagreement in the Arab world with President Trump’s decision has sparked outrage among many leaders in the region. This appears to be a step back for Trump and his relationship with leaders in the Middle East, since he had just recently established a strong and respectful alliance with many of them during his visit to the region in May 2017. The Middle East was not the only region to show strong disagreement with the proclamation. On December 21st, just more than two weeks after President Trump’s controversial announcement, the UN voted overwhelmingly against the United States’ decision and declared Trump’s declaration on Jerusalem “null and void.” 128 countries

voted against Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, with only nine nations, including the United States and Israel, supporting the decision, and 35 others abstained from the vote. In response to the UN’s rejection of recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, the United States Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, slammed the organization and its decision, stating “Over many years the United Nations has outrageously been one of the world’s foremost centers of hostility towards Israel. The UN has done much more damage to the prospects of Middle East peace than to advance them. We will not be a party to that.” She also cut the United States’ contribution to the United Nations by $285 million for the 2018-19 operating budget. Despite the international community’s clear rejection of the proclamation, President Trump has stood by his decision to support Israel. He also believes that peace in the region is still possible, even with Jerusalem as the capital of the Jewish state. Trump also described his decision as “nothing more or less than the recognition of reality.” Supporting his decision throughout it all has been his longtime friend and ally, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who stated that he was “profoundly grateful” for the proclamation. Israeli Minister of Transportation Yisrael Katz announced on December 27th that a newly planned train station in the Old City of Jerusalem would be named after Trump himself for his strong support to the state of Israel. The new embassy is expected to be opened by the end of next year, according to Vice President Pence, who announced the details in a speech before the Israeli Knesset on January 22nd, 2018. The United States will not be alone in its move, as Guatemala also announced in December 2017 that it will move its embassy to Jerusalem. Guatemala, one of the nine countries to vote in favor of Israel at the UN, has strengthened its relationship with both the United States and Israel over the issue. While the decision to officially proclaim Jerusalem as the capital of Israel has certainly been a controversial and consequential decision for the United States on the international stage, it has been strongly supported by President Trump and his base. Fulfilling one of his biggest and most complicated campaign promises, he has done what our previous three presidents have said they would do, but never did. President Donald J. Trump has and will continue to face strong backlash from nations around the world, but he will continue to stand strong with his biggest ally, Israel. Whether it will ultimately resolve or further complicate the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has yet to be seen.

Parkland, Florida School Shooting Raises Questions About Gun Control Jake Nathan

Staff Writer

February 14th, 2018 is a day that will forever live in infamy for the Parkland, Florida community. A day expected to be a regular day at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School swiftly turned into a tragedy with 17 deaths and 14 non-fatal injuries. At 2:19 pm, former student Nicholas Cruz was dropped off at the school and entered Building 12, which contained about 30 classrooms and 900 students. Upon entering the structure, Cruz pulled the fire alarm bringing confusion amongst students and staff because there had already been a fire drill earlier in the day. Amidst the confusion, Cruz opened fire with his AR-15 semi automatic rifle. By 2:21 pm, after reports of gunfire, the school was put on code red. The shooting lasted for approximately 6 minutes before Cruz dropped his weapon on the third floor of the building and headed out of the building, camouflaging himself with the students. At 3:40pm, over an hour after the horrific events unfolded, Cruz was stopped by a police officer and brought into custody. Unfortunately, this scene has become all too familiar in our society. The current generation of school-aged children has never known a time where the term “school shooting” wasn’t part of far too many conversations. This is not normal, and this has gone too far. This time, thoughts and prayers from the social media masses will not make this tragedy disappear. Enough is enough. This tragedy has caught the attention of a national audience. We cannot live in fear; school is supposed to be a place where we, and our teachers, feel safe. Something needs to change. So the questions become: what needs to be done to prevent incidents like this from occurring again, and what else can we do to make sure kids can feel safe upon entering their school? With everything from strengthening gun

tion given to his past or any other elements that would raise questions about this individual’s ability to purchase such a weapon. How is it even possible that a 19 year old with a sordid past and disciplinary history is capable of purchasing a mass murder weapon? tion are not giving up; we are the future of this country, and we need to ensure that school is a safe and friendly place for every individual that walks through the doors. As of now, there have not been any immediate major changes relating to gun laws or security in schools; however, students are still working to impress their mission upon the nation, including President Trump and all branches of the government. Large corporations, such as Dicks Sporting Goods and Walmart, saying that they do plan to increase their security clearance of individuals applying to purchase a gun. In addition, Dicks Sporting Goods has ended their sale of all assault style weapons, and Walmart, which had already halted their sales, is now raising their age requirement at which one is eligible to purchase a gun. To be able to purchase a gun or ammunition from Walmart or Dicks, you now need to be 21, and Walmart also said they would be removing items that resemble such weapons, such as Non-lethal Airsoft guns. As seen from the actions of these two super stores, which changed their policy as an immediate response to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting, society is listening. President Trump has not yet carried out any significant changes, but that’s not stopping students from pushing for what they believe in. Two weeks after the tragedy, students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High school returned back to school, but their lives are forever altered. Hopefully this will be the last straw; it’s time to stand up and make our voices heard. The future, our future, is at stake, and we must continue the momentum to save ourselves and the people that we love. The time is now.

Alexa, What’s the #*@!&%$ Weather? Matthew Weltmann

Staff Writer

Amazon Echo, Google Home, Apple Homepod, oh my! These virtual assistants are the top of the line, the cream of the crop, the pinnacle of the 21st century smart home devices. From saying, “Alexa, what’s the weather” to “Ok, Google. Open my garage and turn the heat up to 71º,” these devices are quite accommodating. However, according to Avi Greengart, a tech analyst and father of five in new Jersey, “[Alexa] never says ‘That was rude’ or ‘I’m tired of you asking me the same question over and over again.’” In fact, if asked, “Alexa, what’s the #*@!&%$ weather?,” Alexa would happily respond, “Currently, in Huntington, it’s 11 degrees with clear skies and sun. Today, you can expect mostly sunny weather with a high of 16 degrees and a low of 6 degrees.” But is that a good thing? According to the philosopher John Locke and most modern child psychologists, children are born knowing only evolutionary behaviors such as eating and crying; they must learn everything else. This is troublesome: as children listen to their parents demand an Uber from Alexa, children may grow wont to demand things as well. As young children begin to utilize virtual assistants in their everyday life, they may ignore pleasantries such as “please” and “thank you” when speaking to other humans. Furthermore, imagine for a

moment that a 6 year old girl may spend children can recognize the difference 7 hours at school (with teachers and between a “can that sits on a table,” and friends) a human. and 5 She beh o u r s lieves that at home her chil(with a dren are mini virnot affecttual ased. Just as a parent may prohibit his or her child from viewing explicit content by a specific YouTuber that teaches bad manners at a young age, parents also need to be aware of the ramifications of virtual assistants on children. If children grow up in an environment characterized by the expectation that what you ask for will be immediately provided regardless of how you ask for it, where will the incentive be for children to behave according to the rules of society? It is imperative to contemplate the consequences of all of our actions in an age in which technology is being developed everyday and in which the long-term effects of that technology have not yet been proven. Although there isn’t a “polite mode” on virtual assistants yet, hopefully there will be one day when Amazon, Google, and Apple are able to take a look into the repercussions of their developments. Until then, though, we’ll just have to recognize the problem that virtual assistants are creating and find a solution.

How a Moment Becomes a Movement:

Oprah Winfrey, #MeToo, and “Time’s Up” Carina A. Boyce

Staff Writer

“In 1964, I was a little girl sitting on the linoleum floor of my mother’s house in Milwaukee watching Anne Bancroft present the Oscar for best actor at the 36th Academy Awards. She opened the envelope and said five words that literally made history: ‘The winner is Sidney Poitier.’ Up to the stage came the most elegant man I had ever seen. I remember his tie was white, and of course his skin was black, and I had never seen a black man being celebrated like that. I tried many, many times to explain what a moment like that means to a little girl, a kid watching from the cheap seats as my mom came through the door bone tired from cleaning other people’s houses. But all I can do is quote and say that the explanation in Sidney’s performance in ‘Lilies of the Field’: ‘Amen, amen, amen, amen.’”

with a landslide of women - some famous and some not - coming forward on Twitter and other social media sites to share their stories. Soon, the curtains were pulled back on industries where the prevalence of sexual harassment was rampant, but many women were

armed white men, raped, and left blindfolded by the side of the road ...They threatened to kill her if she ever told anyone, but her story was reported to the NAACP where a young worker by the name of Rosa Parks became the lead investigator on her case and

A Golden Moment at the Golden Globes Award And as many other little girls sat on their floors across the nation dreaming big dreams as they - or we - watched Oprah Winfrey speak those words on the night of the 2018 Golden Globes Award ceremony, “Oprah” (as she is commonly called) seemed to transform herself from a figure who entertained us to one who could politically lead us. The well-known entertainer, actress, and talk-show host just delivered one of the most powerful speeches of our time as she accepted the honorary Cecil B. DeMille lifetime award for outstanding contribution to the world of entertainment. But Oprah was not seeking to entertain on this night. She wanted to inform and educate her audience. So, she went on to speak in defense of the press, its continued freedom, and women who had finally used the press as a vehicle to make their private pains public. She continued: “I want tonight to express gratitude to all the women who have endured years of abuse and assault because they, like my mother, had children to feed and bills to pay and dreams to pursue. They’re the women whose names we’ll never know. They are domestic workers and farm workers. They are working in factories and they work in restaurants and they’re in academia, engineering, medicine, and science. They’re part of the world of tech and politics and business. They’re our athletes in the Olympics and they’re our soldiers in the military.” The #MeToo Movement That Changed Lives No matter where we stand on the political divide of late, there is probably little debate on the fact that the press has been under tremendous scrutiny and from a wide range of forces - many more powerful than in the past. However, if the role of the press is to bring forward the truth as discovered, one of the most powerful movements facilitated by the press has been the #MeToo Movement. In 2007, an activist named Tarana Burke created the #MeToo campaign to help women and girls with whom she was working who had become victims of sexual harassment. Years later, it would become an international movement, eventually

accuse without proper investigation for the truth and without protection for the women. In fact, we are seeing a large number of men, including Senators, Congressmen, Reverends, Directors, Actors, and many others in senior positions, lose their jobs and their credibility when there is evidence of their abuse. In one of the greatest honors for the movement, TIME magazine named their person(s) of the year for 2017 “The Silence Breakers” - a number of movie stars and other high profile women who dared to not be silent anymore and instead chose to come forward to humbly share their painful experiences with harassment and publicly name their abusers. In the most conspicuous image on the TIME cover, an arm sat within the frame of the picture, but was attached to an unknown woman who was not in the frame. It was TIME’s way of indicating all of the other women who have been silenced, who never told their story, who have lived lives of no one believing them when they did, or who will never come forward for fear of retribution. The arm represented the stories we will never hear. Even The Wounded Woman Can Find Her Voice

scared to share their stories. Now, with strength in numbers, women did not just share their personal pain, but they began to name names. Within just the last year, claims of harassment have come from prominent actresses and athletes, from Hollywood to the U.S. Olympics Gymnastics team. Some of the men are being charged, some sued, others shamed into retirement from prominent jobs in government. This brings us back to Oprah. Many of us who have followed Oprah over the years are aware that she has publicly stated that she, too, was secually harassed as a child. In her IMDb biography online, Orpah Gail Winfrey, her birth name, states that she was born and raised in an economically troubled neighborhood by a single teenage mother in MIlwaukee. Years of mispronouncing her name led to her adopting the changed spelling to Oprah, but her childhood was a difficult one. By age nine, she had dealt with her first incident of assault, and she would be abused several more times by older male relatives and family acquaintances. It is easy to understand her passion for this particular cause when one reflects upon her own childhood. Maybe it was the feeling that no one was there for her in her youth that silenced her voice; however, she is silent no more. Time’s Up for Abusers As Women Find Their Voice So, as millions sat riveted to their television screens to see this powerful speech, Oprah would shed light on the story of Recy Taylor. In 1994, Taylor - an African American - was “a young wife and mother walking home from a church service … in Abbeville, Alabama, when she was abducted by six

together they sought justice. But justice wasn’t an option in the era of Jim Crow. The men who tried to destroy her were never persecuted. Recy Taylor died ten days ago, just shy of her 98th birthday.” She continued, “For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men. But their time is up. Their time is up.” And on that night, Oprah offered millions the guidance necessary to turn their pain into empowerment, and many began to feel that we were in a time when women needed this type of strong voice representing us. Why not “Oprah for President”? The “Time’s Up” movement against sexual harassment was founded late 2017 through early 2018 in response to numerous Hollywood actresses coming forward to allege harassments from one of the industry’s biggest directors - Harvey Weinstein. Weinstein’s influence in the industry made most of the women he harassed terrified to speak up against him, until #MeToo gave them a voice. In November 2017, 700,000 female farm workers wrote a letter of solidarity to the Hollywood women involved in exposing the sexual abuse allegations against Weinstein and others in the industry. The letter, published in TIME magazine, spoke of their shared experience of assault and harassment. Now, stories of harassment have been shared by women, and men, in just about every industry - even on the judicial bench as reported recently in a CNN report and the Halls of Congress. Women have found strength in each other to come forward. Gone are the days when a woman speaking up or speaking out is able to come with vindictive punishment from men they

And on that night in Hollywood, Oprah Winfrey stood up to accept the award, no longer afraid of her truth and totally committed to sheltering and protecting others seeking to share their truth - that it used to be an ordinary event for women to feel un-empowered to speak up about harassment. But thanks to a number of women and men, they can now safely come out of the shadows and say #MeToo. With the same conviction, they can also now bravely say “Time’s Up” as the men who did that to them are no longer sheltered from consequences by a society that once refused to listen to or empathize with women who were exploited by powerful men. So, where do we go from here? Dressed in black, with a sea of other women all dressed in black to make a statement of solidarity that night, Oprah concluded, “So I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon! And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say “Me too” again.” President Oprah? So, is there the possibility of President Oprah in the future? Who knows. She is an intelligent, compassionate, and self-made woman who shows the best our nation has to offer. She would be a positive light for many kids born into poverty as a beacon of hope for each them. We currently have a President who was not involved in politics before his election, so she is not disadvantaged by that fact. Only time will tell whether, just like the #MeToo and “Times Up” movements, she can turn that powerful moment she had following her speech that night into a political movement to lead this nation during the 2020 presidential elections.

Camila Cabello Represents the Dreamer in Everyone Brooke Gronich & Emily Sobel

Although hit artist Camila Cabello experienced many years of growth, fame, and love with her group, Fifth Harmony, she made the difficult decision to go solo about a year ago. There are many theories as to why Camila left the group, and it seems as though it differs depending upon whom you speak to. When Camila announced her departure from the group, she gave a heartfelt goodbye to all of the Fifth Harmony fans and especially to her now-former group members. However, the other four girls of the group claimed that Camila flaked out on all of their future plans. Although it was unfortunate that the group lost its most pure and angel-like voice, it was time for Camila to start working on a future of her own. Camila came out with her debut solo album right around the start of this year and broke records almost immediately. Camila’s album, Camila, quickly rose to #1 in over 90 countries. Additionally, a week after its release, the album made it to the number one and exclusive spot on Billboard top 200 chart. Camila’s unique sound combined Latin pop with salsa notes in her single “Havana.” Furthermore, she imbued reggaeton accents in her hits “Inside Out” and “She Loves Control.” Not only is Camila incredibly talented, but her diverse style honors her Cuban history and culture. With just 10 songs, Camila was able to resonate with many of her fans, but this did not come without controversy. Some people interpreted her song “Real Friends” as a slap in the face to the rest of Fifth Harmony. In Camila’s song “Consequences,” she is expressing her feelings on the aftermath of a hard breakup, hence the lyric “Loving

you had Consequences.” While the fame and hype of debut albums usually revolves around more upbeat songs, Cabello debut leaned on a more depressing feel. It fits perfectly with her story; she had to go through a hard and life changing break up from her band to find her way to success as a solo artist. Camila made an appearance at the Grammys in New York City, on Sunday, January 22nd. While this was not for a solo performance, it was for an incredibly prominent moment during which she stood with an extremely strong and influential group of women as Kesha performed her song “Praying.” Following Kesha’s amazing performance, Camila went on to introduce the legendary band U2 with a beautiful and empowering speech. She shared with the audience that “Tonight, in this room full of music’s dreamers, we remember that this country was made by dreamers, for dreamers, chasing the American dream...I’m here on this stage tonight because just like the Dreamers, my parents brought me to this country with nothing in their pockets but hope. They showed me what it means to work twice as hard and never give up. And honestly no part of my journey is any different from theirs. I’m a proud, Cuban-Mexican immigrant, born in eastern Havana, standing in front of you on the Grammy stage in New York City. And all I know is that just like dreams, these kids can’t be forgotten and are worth fighting for.” Camila’s speech was inspiring and the crowd roared in support of this talented performer who has worked so hard to get to the top.

12 Strong Shares Stories of True Heroes

12 Strong is a fascinating movie that hit theatres on January 19th. While 12 Strong received a low Rotten Tomatoes review of just 54%, we, along with so many others, really enjoyed the movie. When the 12 American soldiers defeated the Taliban, there is a sense of pride and victory that will send chills down any viewer’s spine. The soldiers were strong and fearless throughout the movie, which are two incredibly admirable traits. 7 Songs You May Have Missed Rachel Penzer

Entertainment Editor

With the rise of countless pop hits advancing to the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, 2017 was most definitely an outstanding year for the pop genre of music. While the release of Ed Sheeran’s album Divide, containing his hit singles “Shape of You” and “Castle on the Hill,” started this year off with a bang, Taylor Swift’s dramatic shift from “America’s sweetheart” to reckless rebel shocked millions through her new album Reputation and newest single “Look What You Made Me Do.” Contrary to popular belief, people began to adjust to Taylor Swift’s new reputation, knocking Ed Sheeran out of the #1 spot. In addition to fan favorite Ed Sheeran and award winning Taylor Swift, other artists, such as Imagine Dragons, Kesha, Lana Del Rey, Katy Perry, Bebe Rexha, Lorde, and Pink, each contributed a big piece to the music world for this past year. However, a large portion of the best songs in 2017 that ultimately ranked high on the pop music charts were easily missed and could have been given more attention. And it’s no surprise that some of these top songs may have been overlooked as most came from relatively new artists of 2017. Twenty-four-yearold songwriter Julia Michaels, who has previously written some of the top pop songs, such as Selena Gomez’s “Bad Liar,” Justin Bieber’s “Sorry,” and Gwen Stefani’s “Used To Love You,” debuted her singing career with hit song “Issues” in January of 2017. Little do many know, the extremely talented young singer-songwriter also released a second single along with her “mini-album” entitled Nervous System over the summer. The song, called “Uh Huh,” shows Michaels’s more fun, upbeat side and showcases the singer’s unusual vocal kicks. Another artist that surfaced in 2017 is Qveen Herby. Fans may recognize this R&B artist and rapper from her days as Amy Noonan in the duo called Karmin, with her current husband Nick Noonan. Duo Karmin hit their peak in 2012 with radio tune “Brokenhearted,” but after two more albums, they decided to focus on Amy’s talent as a rapper. She has now released two EPs and her greatest success has come from rap song “Busta Rhymes,” which has an extremely fast second verse that really shows fans what Queen Herby is all about. The song’s music video even has over one million views on YouTube. While Carly Rae Jepsen, most wellknown for her #1 song “Call Me Maybe” in 2012, quietly released “Cut to the Feeling,” in March of 2017 after being on the soundtrack for movie Leap!.

The song did not make the cut for Emotion, her most recent album, however, the song still did exceptionally well critically and was acclaimed by Billboard, The Guardian, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and Vanity Fair as one of the best songs of 2017 in their respective year end lists. Another song released this year by a well known artist came from the band Neon Trees this past summer. This band took a break after last album Pop Psychology, which featured the radio single “Sleeping With a Friend,” and lead singer Tyler Glenn branched out, releasing a solo album entitled Excommunication. Though it did not get much radio play, the band reunited this summer to produce another uplifting single “Feel Good,” which Glenn calls “a bright bolt of happiness, but its foundation came from anxiety, loneliness, and fear.” The single is said to be a taste of what’s to come in the band’s upcoming fourth studio album. To continue the trend of pop-stars not gaining much initial fame from their latest singles, Pop powerhouses Pink and Sia actually paired up in the spring of 2017 to sing on Norwegian songwriting and producing team Stargate’s electronic-pop single “Waterfall.” However, the song’s success level was considerably disappointing considering the popularity of its singers. In late spring, Nick Jonas also released a double collaboration with Anne-Marie, who was known this year for her collaboration with Clean Bandit and Sean Paul for “Rockabye,” and Mike Posner, who was well known for “Cooler Than Me” back in 2010 and more recently “I Took a Pill In Ibiza.” Jonas’s song, entitled “Remember I Told You,” is a perfect blend of R&B and electronic vibes and combines the three singers’ voices very smoothly. Lastly, a more popular song towards the end of 2017 was “Meant To Be,” by Bebe Rexha and featuring country duo Florida Georgia Line. The song is Rexha’s only country-vibed song and her first top ten single. Fans attribute a lot of the song’s success to country music fans and followers of Florida Georgia Line; however, Rexha has also made her mark with singles “I Got You” and other collaborations, such as “In the Name of Love” with DJ Martin Garrix, and “Me, Myself & I” with rapper G-Eazy. Overall, many of these songs did well in 2017, but maybe not as well as expected by some fans when compared to many other hits of 2017. Many expect these artists to continue to thrive in 2018 and really make a mark on the constantly evolving music industry.

even had the chance to meet Christian Siriano. Considering he had a lot of people to talk to, including his family, his friends, and the press, we were super excited when he took some time to say hello to us. Overall, this experience is one that I will never forget. I have wanted to go to New York Fashion Week for as long as I can remember, and it ended up being a better experience then I could have ever imagined. The clothing and models were magnificent and the show conveyed the message that “beautiful” is not defined by a particular size or shape. Christian Siriano embodies the idea that if you work hard at something, you can be successful and

accomplish your goals, and for the past decade, that is what he has been living: achievement and prosperity.

This is The Greatest Show! Or Is It? (Spoiler Alert) Austin Krach, Jolie Friedman, & Kayla Menkes

Entertainment Editor, Print Editor and Staff Writer

Nine years. That’s how long The Greatest Showman star Hugh Jackman has been working on his passion project depicting the rise of P.T. Barnum. First announced in 2009, this movie has had quite the journey. At the time, the movie-musical genre was not in demand, something that changed after the release of the popular film La La Land in late 2016. Prior to this, Jackman never stopped working on this film, and in 2016, he realized that his time finally arrived. In August 2011, Michael Gracey was chosen to direct the movie. Then, in 2013, songwriting duo Pasek and Paul were asked to to write the music for the film. At the time, they were unknown. However, flash forward a few years, and they are two of the most well-known songwriters in the entertainment industry. Not only did they win an Oscar and Golden Globe for their song “City of Stars” from the movie La La Land, but they also won a Tony for the broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen in the category of “Best Original Score.” In the summer of 2016, both Zac Efron and Michelle Williams signed on to be in Jackman’s film. Other cast-mates include Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, and Keala Settle. With that kind of starpower, The Greatest Showman had full potential to truly be the greatest. Finally, The Greatest Showman was released on December 20th, 2017. As of this writing, the film has grossed over $377 million worldwide. Showman follows the story of P.T. Barnum and the creation of what would eventually be known as the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. It encapsulates Barnum’s early life, his rise to fame, and his struggles that came with his newfound popularity. Jackman truly does an incredible job of being a larger-than-life character with an endless imagination. P.T. Barnum was a man who learns the hard way that his place in society will affect how others treat him and look at him. Due to the poor treatment others gave him and his father, Barnum was determined to prove everyone wrong and show that he was worth more than his low class appearance and station in life. The beginning of the film showcases Barnum’s humble beginnings and finding the love of his life, Charity (played by Michelle Williams). Although separated for most of their lives due to their social classes, Barnum was sure that one day he’d be able to provide a magnanimous life for both of them. Even though Charity claims that no money can replace the happiness that her husband and two daughters provide, Barnum conjures up the idea of a museum of oddities in order to provide for his family and send a message to the world. While the museum had a rocky start, Barnum eventually decided to ditch the wax figures and make the museum come alive! Barnum searched far and wide for people who were different and unique. Despite race, size, shape, or background, Barnum’s show embraces and celebrates people for being different from the societal norms of this time. This plan was a success as the sales of the show exponentially

increased, giving people a rare opportunity to enjoy themselves, smile, and laugh. Nevertheless, conservatives and traditionalists are intransigent and refuse to appreciate the show because it goes against their views. One of these negative perceptions came in the form of a newspaper review. It was in this review that the show was referred to as a “circus,” and Barnum was inspired once again. During the late 19th century, any-

At the end of the day, Barnum was a con man who went to great lengths to rise out of the status into which he was born. The Greatest Showman depicts Barnum as a hero for bringing a unique group of people together and shifting the perspective of many others. While that may be true, the film hinders the fact that Barnum was selfish and would do anything to make his show bigger and better. One can argue that there’s also something morally wrong with Barnum’s hiring of his “freaks.” Although he may have offered them a better life than the one they were currently living, he was simply using them to exploit them for money. Every single day they were ostracized by society. Barnum even said that the peo(Photo courtesy of Twentieth Century Fox) ple will laugh at one other than a wealthy white man them and expected them to suck it up or woman was considered strange or and deal with it. If you didn’t already know, HQ is a world wide Trivia game played by Apple and, more recently, Android users. Similar to TV game shows such as Jeopardy and Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, HQ is a trivia game where players can win real money by answering difficult trivia questions. This new brain-teasing game was created by the same creators of the 6 second video app Vine. Get one wrong and you get eliminated, but you can get back in the game by inviting a friend and getting extra lives. The game started out with a small number of players and a small cash prize, but as the amount of players increased, the cash prize increased too. This increase is most attributed to HQ opening up the game to Android users and those in both the UK and Australia. The cash prize is $2,000 for most games, with the highest ever being $18,000. The HQ creators plan to hopefully reach $1,000,000 in cash prizes one day. HQ is intriguing to all ages and many play every day with hope that they will win. HQ is a game that you can play by yourself, with a group of friends, or with your family; it has become very popular over the last few months. HQ is getting more and more players each day. It’s not like TV where you are hoping for those moments, you’re along for the ride.” Rus Yusupov and Colin Kroll are not making any money from HQ as of now, but they hope to in the future. For now, however, it is not a main concern. According to Variety, Yusupov said “monetization is not currently the company’s focus. That said, it’s getting a ton of interest from brands and agencies who want to collaborate and do something fun. ” Recently, I have jumped on the HQ bandwagon. I discovered the app a few months ago after hearing about it and watching others participated in it, so I decided to download it on my phone and give it a try. At first, I didn’t believe that this app was what it claimed to be, and I thought it was too good to be true, but eventually HQ captured my attention. I play every day at 3 PM with my brother and at 9 PM with my family. The closest I came to winning was when I got 9 out of 12 questions correct, and most of it was out of pure luck. HQ is definitely a game that will keep me, and others across the world, interested for a long time. If you haven’t gotten the HQ fever yet, download it today!

Top 5 Moments from Music’s Biggest Night Rachel Penzer & Austin Krach Entertainment & Lifestyles Editors

The 60th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony, celebrating a year of different genres of music by awarding the most prestigious of honors to deserving artists and hosting various enticing performances by the world’s biggest musical stars, took place on Sunday, January 28th. For the first time in fifteen years, the annual event was held outside of Los Angeles. This year, Madison Square Garden in New York City had the honor of hosting music’s biggest night, with James Corden of The Late Late Show hosting for his second consecutive year. Some of this year’s most memorable Grammy moments came from artistic performances by musicians both new and well known. As in years past, many will also remember some shocking award choices. While it was a memorable event, several moments shined above others. In light of recent issues, such as the “Time’s Up” and “Me Too” movements combating assault and discrimination against women and immigration disputes, this year’s Grammys was, by far, one of the most politically-charged award shows yet. The not-so underlying tone of politics was evident even in the show’s opening. Rapper Kendrick Lamar, who would later take home five Grammy awards including Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song, hit off the 2018 Grammys with a performance of “XXX,” the prelude of which states, “America, God bless you if it’s good to you,” while standing in front of an American flag backdrop with a group that has always been politically outspoken, U2. Comedian Dave Chappelle then presented the second part of Lamar’s rap compilation. By the end of his performance, gunshot noises could be heard, and his dancers knocked themselves down one by one. This was definitely a memorable opening during what has proven to be a tumultuous time in our country. Included among Best New Artist nominees, Khalid, Lil Uzi Vert, Julia Michaels, and SZA, was the category’s winner Alessia Cara. The “Scars to Your Beautiful”, “1-800-273-8255”, and “Stay” singer was immediately criticized via Twitter and other social media outlets because of her questionable qualifications for the award. Her debut album came out in 2015, but it was not until this past year that she had increasingly popular singles and features. Cara later took to Instagram to address the backlash. “I’m aware that my music wasn’t released yesterday,” she wrote. “I’m trying very hard to use the platform I’ve been given to talk about these things and bring light to issues that aren’t fair.” While Cara may not be a particularly new artist, winning this award did have a prominent impact on the Grammys. Despite the immense support for equality by the attendees, many of whom wore white roses to the event for victims of sexual assault, Alessia Cara was actually the only nominated woman to win and accept a main award at the Grammys this year. Though her feat was controversial, Cara was unintentionally designated to represent women in music at the event. Another important performance took place approximately halfway through the show by P!nk. Viewers did not know what to expect from this performance. P!nk is known for flying high and doing acrobatic stunts in her performances, especially after her 2010 Grammys performance of “Glitter in the Air,” in which the singer hung from the ceiling, spinning at a concerningly fast speed in a silk sling while soaking wet, and still very clearly singing without a backup track. What P!nk displayed this year, though, was

entirely the opposite, but equally as daring. She chose to perform a song entitled “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken,” which will be the third single from her seventh studio album Beautiful Trauma released in October of 2017. The song was originally written for a movie about suffragettes, and its message is clearly political, pertaining to women’s rights, with a powerful bridge that includes lyrics such as “my freedom is burning” and “this broken world keeps turning.” P!nk stripped her usual ensemble down completely for this performance, wearing a ripped T-shirt and baggy jeans and being accompanied by only a sign language interpreter. Though this was very different from what P!nk fans are used to, the minimalism of this performance was very effective in getting across the song’s message and aligning with the evening’s political themes. If we’re being honest, however, the 2016 Grammy Awards were really the Bruno Mars Awards. Bruno Mars had seven grammy nominations this year and won the award for each category in which he was nominated. These awards were for Mars’s latest album 24K Magic, which is an ode to 90’s R&B. It also spawned hits such as title track, “24K Magic,” as well as “That’s What I Like.” Some of the awards Mars was nominated for included Song of the Year, for “That’s What I Like,” Record of the Year for 24K Magic, and Album of the Year for 24K Magic just to name a few. Mars kept returning category after category to the stage to collect his awards. During his acceptance speech for Album of the Year, Mars said how this album was created as a way to spread love, joy, and positivity into the world. Mars also took to the Grammy’s stage to perform his latest single, a remix of “Finesse” featuring rapper Cardi B. This was a much anticipated performance as the song and music video are both so enjoyable. This fun energy transferred on stage as both performers seemed right at home while singing this funky hit wearing 90s style clothing. This performance certainly had Mars “drippin’ in finesse”! While Bruno Mars stole the show in a number of ways, the moment of the night was when Kesha took to the Grammys stage to perform “Praying.” This song was released earlier this year as the first single off of Kesha’s most recent album entitled Rainbow. “Praying” is a rally cry of finding forgiveness where one could instead be very spiteful. This is a very personal and emotional song, as Kesha released it in response to a lengthy legal battle as well as an abusive work relationship with her ex-producer Dr. Luke. In our opinion, “Praying” was snubbed. It deserved to be nominated for both Song of the Year and Record of the Year. While it was up for Best Pop Solo Performance, it lost to Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You.” Nothing against Ed Sheeran, but Kesha’s triumphant return to the music industry deserved way more recognition. Regardless of the snub from the Grammys, the world was eagerly anticipating Kesha’s performance. For the performance, Kesha was joined by fellow singers Bebe Rexha, Cyndi Lauper, Julia Michaels, Andra Day, Camila Cabello, and the Resistance Revival Chorus. Dressed in all-white, Kesha commanded the stage and belted out her anthem. The power and meaning were obvious in Kesha’s heartfelt rendition as she poured her heart and soul into this performance. When it came to an end, the audience was in tears as they gave Kesha a standing ovation. All of the women on stage shared a group hug as Kesha let out her tears. After Kesha’s stand out moment, “Praying” returned to the top 10 of the iTunes charts gaining the additional recognition that it rightfully deserves.

The 75th annual Golden Globe Awards was certainly a night to remember. The Golden Globes honors film and television and serves as the opening night to the annual Hollywood award season. On January 7th, the nation tuned in to see the nominees and winners. The host for the night was Seth Meyers from Late Night. He was very energetic and set an overall positive tone for what was to come throughout the night. This year’s Golden Globes was about more than just the awards. Talk show host, actress, producer, and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey left the audience speechless and brought everyone to their feet after accepting the coveted Cecil B. DeMille Award, which recog-

nizes lifetime achievement. Now, more than ever, at large events with multiple speakers, participants discuss their political views as well as recent news stories. Oprah discussed the topic of women and politics. It was very powerful and left some touting Oprah for President! Her incredibly timely and powerful speech let a notion of empowerment ring out over the airwaves and complemented the “blackout” theme of the evening’s attire perfectly. Her message was simple: everyone can join together for happy moments, but we need to stand together in the difficult ones as well. Nothing is more powerful than accepting differences and treating everyone as equal human beings.

The Super Bowl has been a staple in American sports since it began in 1971. Even though baseball may be America’s official pastime, football is most definitely the most popular sport in our country right now. Every year,

hundreds of millions of people turn on their TV’s to watch the two best teams from their respective conference battle it out in a single game, making the Super Bowl one of the most-watched TV shows in America. And for those who don’t really enjoy football, odds are that there is a Super Bowl party that you can go to where you can eat some sandwiches, hang out with friends, and take in the spectacle of an always anticipated halftime performance. This year, like every year, there was a lot of speculation regarding the Super Bowl. From the very start of the season, people wondered which teams looked the best and hoped that their favorites could make a run for it all. The New England Patriots were at the top of most people’s lists. The Patriots finished the season with a 13-3 record, with their only losses coming from the Dolphins, the Panthers, and the Chiefs. Led by coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady, the Patriots have made ten consecutive appearances in their conference finals, four of which turned into Super Bowl appearances. Brady and Belichick are already hallof-fame-bound, but it doesn’t hurt to add another ring to their combined ten, right? Their opponents for Super Bowl LII were the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles, who also had a record of 13-3 (with losses from the Chiefs, the Seahawks, and the Cowboys), came in as the obvious underdogs. And with their leader and quarterback Carson Wentz out due to an ACL tear, the job fell to the Eagles’ backup quarterback Nick Foles. Foles, a pro-bowler in 2013, has bounced around in recent years, from

high completion rate for the season and for his career. They may not have any huge names, but the Eagles are a great all around team and can hurt teams with both their offensive proficiency and their tremendous defensive efforts, which some deem to be the best in the entire NFL. With the stage set, Super Bowl LII finally kicked off at 6:30 pm on February 4th, 2018. The game came down to the wire when the Eagles ended up beating the Patriots 41-33. Foles led his team to victory, completing 28 of 43 passes for 331 yards and 3 touchdowns. He was able to find his receivers thanks to his offensive line which allowed zero sacks. Foles was also the recipient of the Super Bowl MVP award. Even though the Patriots lost, they still played a great game. Brady completed 28 of 48 passes for 505 yards and 3 touchdowns, a definite MVP performance. However, the focal point in the game is when the Patriots offensive line allowed defensive end Brandon Graham to sack Brady with 2:16 left in the fourth. Brady fumbled the ball, which was recovered by defensive end Derek Barnett, which pretty much guaranteed an Eagles win. Despite the loss, Brady and Belichick have cemented their place in the Hall of Fame. Now, we look to see if either of them retire. Fans should also keep an eye on Foles; his most recent victory should take him from backup to starter somewhere in the NFL. We will also soon return to making predictions about next year’s big game and who we hope will take home the title of Super Bowl LIII champion.

their movie “Avengers: Infinity War” which comes out in the summer; other movies that were debuted during the Super Bowl were ‘Mission: Impossible- Fallout” and “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.” Some other popular commercials was “Alexa Loses her Voice” with Cardi B and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, “This is Pepsi,” and “It’s a Tide Ad.” From the Star Spangled Banner to the Halftime Show and all the commercials in between, this Super Bowl was one to remember. LiAngelo and LaMelo Ball Move to Tide Rolls in During the Second Half to Win Championship Lithuania Jimmy Rouse and Ishan Suri

We have finally lost LaVar Ball! Or have we? The father of rookie sensation Lonzo Ball has made himself a household name in a very short period

January 8th, 2018 was the College Football Playoff National Championship between the #3 Georgia Bulldogs and the #4 Alabama Crimson Tide, both from the SEC. Alabama reached the championship by routing #1 Clemson 24-6, and Georgia knocked off #2 Oklahoma 54-48 in a double overtime thriller. Both Alabama and Georgia have very similar styles on offense and defense and for a good reason: Georgia coach Kirby Smart was an assistant coach to Alabama coach Nick Saban at Alabama for 9 years. This would become an epic student versus master battle that will be remembered by Georgia and Alabama fans for many years. The game was held in Atlanta, Georgia, and the stadium was rocking when

This is where Tua made a freshman mistake, threw it into tight coverage, and got picked off by Deandre Baker. It started to look really bad for Alabama again. Georgia got into Alabama territory, but then Jake Fromm threw a tip ball interception. Tua overshot his man in the endzone, and they settled for a field goal to make it a 10 point game. Georgia started with the ball in the 4th quarter, and they punted to Alabama. After consecutive long runs by a couple of Alabama backs, they got into field goal range and connected to make it 20-13. Alabama kicked off. On the first possession of the game, Georgia freshman Jake Fromm threw an interception on 3rd and 6, as Alabama defender Tony Brown ripped the ball out of receiver Javon Wims’ hands for the sensational pick. Alabama did get into field goal range after the interception, but kicker Andy Pappanastos missed a 40-yarder. After a couple of punts, Georgia finally was able to get into field goal range after running back Sony Michel had a nice 26-yard run down the sideline on 3rd and 20 at the end of the 1st quarter. The 2nd quarter started with a made 41-yard field goal by Georgia kicker Rodrigo Blankenship. 3-0 Georgia. Alabama punted, and after a huge catch by Javon Wims, Georgia got another field goal. 6-0 Bulldogs. After a few punts, Georgia got the ball back with just over a minute left in the 1st half. After first downs by Michel, Fromm himself, and receiver Terry Godwin, Georgia found itself on the 1-yard line with just seconds left in the half. Mecole Hardman got the carry and took it into the endzone to give the Dogs a 13-0 halftime lead. It looked bad for Alabama, but Nick Saban did something very risky. He took out his quarterback Jalen Hurts and put in the backup Tua Tagovailoa, who hadn’t played a meaningful snap all year. Alabama was desperate, and they were now wondering whether or not Tua would come through. After 2 punts to start the 2nd half, it was Tua Time. He ran to the Georgia 44-yard line and completed 3 passes in a row for 38 yards. Then, he threw a touchdown pass to Henry Ruggs III to make it 13-7. Alabama wasn’t done yet...but neither was Georgia. Right after Alabama finally got on

to punt. Tua drove down the field and eventually had a 4th and 4 from the 7-yard line. Saban decided to go for it, and Tua threw to Calvin Ridley in the endzone. And that produced a tied game with less than 4 minutes left. Georgia punted again, and Tua had some clutch runs and throws to put Alabama into field goal range with a chance to win the game. The kick was wide left, and the game was going to overtime. The Georgia offense, which was slumping, got the ball first in OT. On a 3rd and 6, Fromm was sacked by Terrrell Lewis for a 13-yard loss, which made it a 51-yard field goal attempt. Blankenship nailed it to make it 23-20 Bulldogs. They could either tie with a field goal or win with a touchdown. Tua made a HUGE freshman mistake on the first play when he took a 16-yard sack. However, on the next play, he threw it deep into the endzone where Devonta Smith caught it for the championship winning touchdown for the Tide. The Crimson Tide came out on top with a score of 26-23. Alabama won its 17th national championship, and Nick Saban won his 6th. He is now tied with Bear Bryant for the most championships by a football coach in NCAA history. This was one of the greatest championship games in college football history from the initial rivalry to the excitement and the story of a freshman quarterback coming in to start the 2nd half and winning. Georgia gave it their all, but any college football fan has to respect what happened on the turf on that fateful Monday night. Congratulations Alabama on a job very well done.

Over 3,500 fans attended the Long Island Championship game to see a show, and they got exactly what they paid for. The 2018 Thunderbirds have now officially avenged their loss from last year and are your Class AA Long Island Champions. The T-Birds came into this season with a lot of hype following them, and they have certainly lived up to it. From day one, they were considered heavy favorites to be Long Island Champions. Uniondale was no match for the Thunderbirds, losing 6954. The Nassau County Champs were not able to make any major stops on defense let alone make a layup on a fastbreak. The Thunderbirds took an early lead and never looked back due to Uniondale’s inability to rebound on either side of the court. Hills East came out ready to play, and it showed on the court and on the scoreboard. Walking bucket Savion Lewis was the leading scorer of the game with 21 points and 7 assists. His beyond impressive play allowed him to earn the Most Valuable Player award of the Long Island Class AA Championship. Savion’s ability to move the ball around coupled with being a dangerous scoring threat allowed the Thunderbirds to keep Uniondale unbalanced. The dynamic backcourt of Hills East showed up as powerful as it has all season long. The two senior guards, Savion Lewis and Julien Crittendon, had 36 of the 69 points scored by the

gave them the edge over the Knights. When asked about their recent victory and upcoming trip to the State Championship in Binghamton, Savion said, “ My feelings about this last game are just amazing. Winning this game was so important to me because I wanted to bring a Long Island Championship to Hills East after falling short last year

are more prepared than ever.” While Savion and Julien led the team in scoring, the game would not have been won without the tremendous defensive effort from Kenneth Mathurin and Kendall Nero-Clark who clamped down the Uniondale big men and protected the paint, forcing the Knights to shoot atrociously from beyond the arc.

Mathurin, who had a double-double in the Long Island Championship with 11 points and 11 rebounds, and NeroClark, who added 10 points, were the forefront of major stops on defensive and grabbing offensive rebounds. The outstanding off the bench defensive efforts by Shamar More-Hough and Max Caspi, along with the unlimited range from Shane Dean, allowed the Champion Thunderbirds to put the game away and send Uniondale home with a loss. This game was, without a doubt, won collectively as a team. Every player showed up and did their part in order to secure the win. Countless students and other members of the Hills East community showed up to offer their support for the newly crowned Long Island Champions. The very boisterous crowd in support of the TBirds undoubtedly gave the Thunderbirds an edge as the enormous crowd made it feel like they had home field advantage. The Thunderbirds look to continue their dominance and success as they head up to Binghamton this weekend, March 16th-18th. While there, they will continue their final ride and play in the semi-finals of the state tournament against either Niagara Falls or Mcquaid in Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena. On behalf of the entire Half Hollow Hills East community, we would like to wish the Thunderbirds the best of luck at the state tournament.

Two points. That was the difference last year between winning and losing for the Hills East Basketball. The tragic ending to a spectacular 2017 season left the T-Birds wanting more. The 2018 season has been almost breathtaking as the team has continuously dominated the top teams on Long Island, including as Brentwood, Deer Park, Ward Melville, and Chaminade. The Thunderbirds, led by guards Savion Lewis and Julien Crittendon, once again find themselves back in the Long Island Championship game where they are looking for redemption and the chance to play for the State Championship in Binghamton. After beating Brentwood by 20 points in the Suffolk County Semi-final and Deer Park by 22 points in the Suffolk County final, the senior-heavy team finds themselves in the same position as last year. Losing only one starting senior last year, the Thunderbirds are coming back with the same starters who over the course of the past year have put in hours and hours of hard work both in the gym and on the court.
