welcome to the 8th annual Thought bubble Festival!

i

n 2014 we celebrate our 8th and most diverse Thought Bubble ever; reflecting a journey that began in 2007 and took place on one day in the basement of Leeds Town Hall, attracting an audience of just over 500 people. As attendance and interest has grown (12,000 people attended the festival in 2013), Thought Bubble’s status as a major international comic book and graphic novel festival has become cemented with a series of workshops, masterclasses, panel discussions, screenings and a line-up of special events taking place across Leeds for over a week each November. Once again our centrepiece event this year is the Thought Bubble comic book convention which will take place over two days on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th November in three of Leeds’ largest exhibition halls - New Dock Hall, Royal Armouries Hall, and the specially constructed Thought Bubble Teepee which is being built just for this event! We’ve curated a fantastic line-up of local and international guests, comprising artists and writers whose amazing work shows the true diversity of comic book and graphic novel storytelling. The convention will also be filled with hundreds of exhibitors from around the world; from selfpublished artists and writers to the best retailers in the country, and with two days to dedicate to the event you can browse and wander around the convention at your leisure. As a major celebration of comic books and graphic novels, Thought Bubble is the premier destination for stalwarts of the comic book community, as well as a place of discovery for young people and adults who haven’t read a comic book before but want to find an entry point into the medium. Ultimately, however, the success of Thought Bubble is down to you, our attendees, who have helped make each event so special and unique. Whether you’re a cosplay enthusiast or curious first-time visitor, we look forward to welcoming you to our biggest and best festival to date. 2014’s Thought Bubble Festival includes a number of special screenings presented by Leeds International Film Festival. The fantastic selection of films is sure to appeal to Thought Bubble audiences, from incredible anime screenings and documentaries to Fanomenon — a celebration of some of the most mind-blowing genre films on the planet. All screenings taking place as part of Leeds International Film Festival will have its icon programme.

arts council S

ince 2008, Thought Bubble has benefited greatly from Arts Council funding. It has helped us bring the sequential arts universe to wider audiences. In the past, funding has specifically supported new projects such as the Thought Bubble Comic Art Competition, Bubs Lounge, and our annual Artist Residencies, as well as workshops, masterclasses and special guest appearances.

This year, with new support from the Arts Council, we will be able to record all talks and panels taking place at the convention, and will be putting these online for anyone to access for free after the festival closes. By doing this, we hope to be able to help even more people learn about our favourite storytelling medium, even if they’re unable to travel to Leeds to experience Thought Bubble first-hand.

ome and join us in Kodama Woods, a unique space inspired by the films of Hayao Miyazaki where you can relax away from the hustle and bustle of the convention, amid a magical woodland area designed and built by artist Tom Eglington. Design and construct your very own Kodama lamp to add to the wood spirits that populate the trees, and witness the magic unfold over the weekend.

The Kodama Woods project was made possible by a generous grant from Leeds Inspired, an initiative of Leeds City Council that funds cultural projects that create high quality, accessible cultural experiences for Leeds’ residents and visitors alike.

This event will be open 15-16 November at the Boulevard, Leeds Dock All Ages • Free admission with convention ticket • Exhibitions are free for under 12s, but an accompanying ticket-holding adult must be present. last hope, can stop Beerus’s from destroying Earth, and possibly the entire universe! 1445 - Short Peace (68 min) The acclaimed anthology Short Peace, conceived by the creator of Akira, Katsuhiro Ôtomo, features four dystopian shorts from some of Japan’s most exciting creative talent. Ôtomo’s contribution, Combustible, is a tragic story about a firefighter set in the Edo period. In the Oscar-nominated Possessions from Shuhei Morita, a traveller seeks shelter in a magical Shinto shrine. A girl’s prayers summons a great bear to defeat an oni (demon) in Hiroaki Ando’s Gambo, and in Hajime Katoki’s A Farewell to Arms, a small crew of soldiers sets out to destroy a robot-tank.

1100 - Appleseed Alpha (93 min) Based on the comic book by the creator of Ghost in the Shell and from the director of the original Appleseed anime movie comes the intense post-apocalyptic prequel. Left to survive in a post-World War society, two mercenary soldiers - Deunan and her cyborg partner Briareos – are sent on a mission on the outskirts of their war-torn city. During the operation, they run into Iris and Olson, two citizens from the utopian city of Olympus, who might have a way to save the world but the ruthless Talos and the scheming warlord Two Horns have their own plans.

Beerus, an ancient and powerful God of Destruction, searches for Goku after hearing rumors of the Saiyan warrior who defeated Frieza. and Major Motoko Kusanagi is a cyborg officer in the Section 9 security force. As Kusanagi digs deeper into the case, she realises that the identity of the assailant lies at the heart of a vast political conspiracy. 2045 - Grave of the Fireflies (89 min) Screening on a new digital print, Isao Takahata’s early Studio Ghibli masterpiece is a visually stunning and emotionally powerful film that meditates on the devastating consequences of war. A young brother and sister are forced to fight for survival in the devastated Japanese countryside during World War II after their mother is killed in an air raid, and with their father serving in the navy. Food and shelter are scarce, and even their own relatives are too concerned with their own survival. All they have is each other. 8 / Screening / Cartoonists Footsoldiers of Democracy Sun 9 Nov, VUE Cinema, The Light, Leeds, 1400 (106 min), £8 (£6 concession), please visit leedsfilm. com for tickets

1615 - Giovanni’s Island (102 min) Directed by Mizuho Nishikubo, a longtime collaborator of Mamoru Oshii , Giovanni’s Island – like the anime classic Grave of the Fireflies – examines the struggles of the Japanese in the immediate aftermath of their defeat in World War II, from the perspective of a child. A testament to the emotional resilience of children, and the preciousness of those lost but not forgotten, Giovanni’s Island echoes the work of the master Miyazaki in refusing to paint a picture of extreme moral contrasts. There are no heroes or villains here, just ordinary people managing as best they can in desperate circumstances. 1845 - Ghost in the Shell (83 min) A special presentation of Mamoru Oshii’s classic cyberpunk anime Ghost in the Shell, screening in a new digital cinema print on the giant screen at Leeds Town Hall as part of this year’s Fanomenon Anime Day. It’s the year 2029

28 / Live Event / Travelling Man Signing Tour, Manchester Weds 12 Nov, Travelling Man, 4 Dale St, Manchester, M1 1JW, 16301830, All Ages, FREE Travelling Man has firmly established itself as the place to go in the north of England for all kinds of comics goodness with its awesome vibe and friendly staff. 27 / Screening / Giovanni’s Island Weds 12 Nov, Victoria Hall, Leeds Town Hall, 1615 (102 min), £8 (£6 concession), please visit leedsfilm. com for tickets Directed by Mizuho Nishikubo, a longtime collaborator of Mamoru Oshii, Giovanni’s Island – like the anime classic Grave of the Fireflies – examines the struggles of the Japanese in the immediate aftermath of their defeat in World War II, from the perspective of a child.
