Obtaining permits for building and renovation projects has never been more convenient
from June 9 2023
Summer construction season is upon us, as indicated by workers, trucks and heavy equipment on local roads, but companies undertaking government infrastructure projects aren’t the only ones who need to dot their I’s and cross their T’s before getting started
Whether you are building a deck, turning an unfinished basement area into a games room or having your foundation repaired, the first step in the process is applying for and obtaining a building permit.

The City of Thompson’s internet-based building permit application was highlighted at the committee of the whole meeting on June 5.

Cloudpermit is an online service enabling building inspectors, builders and property owners to complete the steps required for obtaining a permit or requesting a building inspection from a computer, tablet or smartphone.
It’s not only easier for people and businesses undertaking construction projects, but for city staff as well.
“I don’t have to go on site with the file, come back to the office and take notes,” said Danny Haywood, who was recently promoted to become Thompson’s chief building inspector. “I can do it live in person in my truck and go on to the next site.”
Cloudpermit reaches people where they are, eliminating one trip from their busy schedules.
“They don’t have to come to City Hall to do this anymore,” said City of Thompson development and technical services director Lyle Safronetz. “They can do this from their kitchen, from the café, from McDonald’s. There’s no having to work around City Hall hours.”
The only thing preventing building permit applications from being a completely virtual experience is the fact that applicants currently have to come to City Hall in person to pay the associated fees, said city manager Anthony McInnis.
“The administration’s going to be asking for council’s support to set up online payment options and credit card payment options so that people can start doing these things remotely. That would enhance the users’ experience. They wouldn’t have to physically come to City Hall. They can fill out the permit and pay for it right online.” may be limited during this time.
To begin the process of submitting a building permit application online, go to https://ca.cloudpermit.com/ login and create an account. Information related to completing applications via Cloudpermit, including videos about how to submit a permit application, send a message or request a building inspection, are available at https://www.thompson. ca/p/permits, which also has information about what types of building and renovation projects require permits and which details residents need to include in their building permit applications.
Those who aren’t tech savvy and find the online application process difficulty still have the option of coming to City Hall and submitting a building permit application the old way, Haywood says.
