CASE STUDY: RIDER UNIVERSITY SUMMER SESSIONS

A

fter speaking with my internship supervisor and looking over the values of Rider’s summer semester, I was able to conclude that the core theme was freedom. Despite taking courses, I discovered, Summer Sessions is more about moving through required courses with some added trips outside of the classroom. This is where the summer semester differentiates itself from other semesters.

HOT AIR BALLOON ANIMATION

To carry this theme of freedom, specifically through exploration, my supervisor told me she really wanted to use a stock photo in the case study that she had purchased of a hot air balloon. After working with the photo, I was able to overlay the Rider logo on the balloon, while

selecting the balloon and replacing the background with the patch and clone stamp tools. This allowed the balloon to freely move throughout the scene in an animation I created using Photoshop’s timeline feature. As the balloon moved, the copy appeared on the screen. The theme of freedom and exploration was carried out through the words “The sky isn’t the limit,” meaning you can go further than that, and “Elevate. Accelerate. Fascinate.”

This animation was used on the university’s axis TVs and on Rider’s College of Continuing Studies’ social media accounts. Using these media, we determined, would be the best ways to reach our target audience, which was current Rider students looking to get ahead or catch up on their required courses.

SUMMER SESSIONS PRINTS

W

hen I begin working on most projects, I always search for the nearest piece of paper. To continue the theme of freedom and exploration, I worked on a logo and font that would express those emotions. Once I finished with my sketches, I went into Illustrator to work on developing the type. FONT SKETCH SAMPLE

When I began working on the “2017,” the toughest aspect was trying to make the 1 and 7 close to the 2 and 0, while maintaining their typical form. That’s when I decided to add the ball seen in the 2. To further the feeling of freedom and adventure that has become synonymous with Rider Summer Sessions, I decided to add the whimsical lines flanking the “2017”.

SUMMER SESSIONS PRINTS

THE SKY ISN’T THE LIMIT

A

s part of the case study, I worked on several prints: a poster design to be put up around campus, a lawn sign and a half-page and a full-page ad for the student newspaper, The Rider News. The poster needed to include all of the relevant information, which was mostly carried over from the previous year’s study, plus the copy that I worked on in the animation.

The biggest struggle with the poster was trying to fit all of the copy that my supervisor wanted, while still having that dominant image to catch the consumers’ attentions. With the lawn sign, it was a bit simpler. I discussed it with my supervisor and we concluded the less copy the better. For that print advertisement, I made the Rider and Summer Sessions logos visible, plus the site to find more information.

SUMMER SESSIONS T-SHIRT GIVEAWAY

A

s part of the Summer Sessions case study, Rider was offering a free fourth class to anyone who signed up for three classes for the semester.

We set up several different stations across campus with the acronym “P3G4,� meaning pay for 3 and get 4. Students had to fill in cards guessing what the acronym meant. The first 100 students to correctly answer the questions won this T-shirt. I was told the T-shirt could be two-color on a gray shirt. Using the Rider cranberry on the gray had a vibrating effect. Because Rider University does not want to confuse the brand by using colors other than the cranberry, I went with black and white.

(500) Days of Summer Rebrand I wanted to take the 2009 poster of (500) Days of Summer and convey a similar message, but relieve the eyes a little bit by narrowing the focus down to a clear subject. In the movie, the protagonist, Tom, has to learn to get over a girl. Therefore, it made sense to have Tom as the focus of the poster with their relationship in the background as a hint of what the movie is about.

With the branding, it was important to have the phone case driving the main element seen in the poster, while the T-Shirt promoted one of the more romantic parts of the movie. The quote would appeal to those with a soft spot for romantic lines.

THE GREAT GATSBY COVER CONCEPT

I

n The Great Gatsby — the only book I enjoyed in high school — both West Egg and East Egg are often compared to the Valley of Ashes. The land of the rich is described as being lively and colorful, whereas the Valley of Ashes, where factories dirty the land, is described as dark and gray.

I wanted to create a book cover redesign around that comparison. Gatsby always has to drive his yellow car through the Valley of Ashes to get into New York City. Therefore, I decided on the yellow and gray color palette. I sketched the Gatsby font and the car before finishing it up in Illustrator. I laid out the cover in a mockup in Photoshop.

EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES FONT

I

’ve always been a huge Panic! At the Disco fan, and one of the band’s coolest music videos has the lead singer turning into the devil. This T-shirt design and font scream sinister.

I wanted to convey an evil emotion with the sharp decorative elements of the serif. I wanted the font to match the silhouette of the lead singer morphing into the devil with a neon-looking stroke going through the characters. The result could be a T-shirt, a sticker or a poster.

FUTURUM NUNCE EST FONT

I

’ve always been drawn to futristic fonts, even it seems “futurum nunc est,” or the future is now. With this font, I wanted the viewer to mentally leap into a generation where autonomous cars are everywhere and space exploration is for the regular folk. To tackle that vision, I did a lot of research on what other designers are doing and have done with futuristic fonts. Most of these fonts have some sort of break in most letters. I began sketching, and definitely

overthought some of the letters, like WXYZ, for a while. Eventually I was able to carry a consistent break in the characters. As an example of what this font could be paired with, I created a low poly image, inspired by a still shot of Tom Cruise in the movie Oblivion. The movie puts the protagonist in a world where his formulaic lifestyle is the result of an autonomous world.

BULL SH*T T-SHIRT AND STICKER DESIGN

I

n an effort to go a bit more light-hearted, I wanted to develop a humorous and casual graphic tee. I went several different routes before having a bit of fun with this one. People continue to prefer communicating with graphics and emojis, much like Otto Neurath in the 1920s.

The poop emoji has become recognizable in communication between friends, so I used a similarly recognizable shape, but changed the eyes to match that of the bull I sketched. To add to the humor, I thought it’d be funny for both the bull and poop to be straightfaced like deer in the headlights. For the font, I wanted the shadows to suggest the letter shapes and let the color of the T-shirt show through the letters. This would add a little bit more of a cartoon feel to the T-shirt.

BEAST MODE GORILLA T-SHIRT DESIGN

T

his t-shirt design communicates the brute strength and gritty toughness that gorillas are synonymous with. Gorillas eventually became my favorite animal when I was younger with movies like Tarzan and later King Kong and The Planet of the Apes reboot. Once I sketched out a few different gorillas, I settled on just the face, with the black T-shirt filling in the remaining detail.

The color palette was a little difficult. I started with just an off-white on the black T-shirt, but it was pretty basic, so I decided to move toward a retro look. I wanted to stick with three colors, so the red in the throat was the perfect color to convey that feeling of anger and toughness in the eyes.
