IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Taking Thermal & Night Vision Outside of the UK.

Thermal imaging and night vision products are strictly controlled by ITAR regulations and are subject to UK Government Export Licensing Regulations. Dependent on specification, a licence may need to be obtained prior to the export, even temporarily (e.g. holiday), from the UK.

Additionally, some countries may be embargoed and no thermal imagers or night vision devices can be taken or exported to them. It is the responsibility of the exporter, whether it be a company or individual, to ensure that such a licence is obtained.

Failure to comply is a criminal offence.

THERMAL

IMAGING

Pulsar Thermal units feature either an XM, XQ, XP, XG or XL prefix within their model designation. This refers to which thermal sensor they use.

XM models have a 320x240, 12µm thermal sensor / XQ models have a 384x288, 17µm thermal sensor / XG models have a 640x480, 12µm thermal sensor / XP models have a 640x480, 17µm thermal

/ NEW XL models have a 1024x768, 12µm thermal sensor.

WHY THERMAL IMAGING?

Thermal imaging is an invaluable technology which works to highlight objects that would usually remain invisible in total darkness, daylight, and even in dense fog when thermal contrast is low.

What is Thermal Imaging?

Using infrared radiation and thermal energy, thermal imaging devices gather information about objects through a thermal sensor (microbolometer) attached to a special type of lens (usually made from Germanium) to formulate clear images of the observed objects.

In general, thermal images are grayscale – with white representing heat, black representing colder regions (or vice versa), and various shades of grey indicating gradients of temperatures between the two. However — for improved identification and varying applications — newer thermal imaging cameras can now add colour to the images they produce, using colours such as orange, blue, yellow, red, and purple.

What do Thermal Imaging Device Specifications Mean?

Thermal Sensor Size

Similar to digital cameras, thermal sensors are measured in pixels; generally speaking, the bigger the sensor the better the picture, as a larger sensor can capture more detail. Pulsar thermal imagers use one of four differently sized sensors, each with its own designation. XM models use a 320x240 thermal sensor, XQ models use a 384x288 thermal sensor, XP and XG models use a 640x480 thermal sensor, and XL models use a 1024x768 thermal sensor.

Thermal Sensor Pixel Pitch

This is the distance between the centre of the pixels. A smaller pixel pitch results in finer image quality and a physically smaller thermal sensor. However, a larger pixel offers more sensitivity. A sensor with a smaller pixel pitch will have a greater base magnification than a thermal imager with the same size lens and a greater pixel pitch. Pulsar XM & XG sensors have a 12µm pixel pitch, and XQ and XP sensors have a 17µm pixel pitch.

NETD

Noise Equivalent Temperature Difference (NETD) is a measurement of the smallest temperature difference a thermal device can detect. The lower the value, the more sensitive the device becomes — performing better than a device with a greater NETD value in conditions that are challenging to thermal imagers such as cold, fog, and rain. A device’s NETD rating is an important indicator as to how well it will perform.

4

MORE ACCURACY

Refresh Rate

A high refresh rate (such as 50Hz) is best when choosing a thermal imager, and a high refresh rate will result in a smooth image when panning or tracking fast-moving objects.

Detection Range

Pulsar’s detection ranges are calculated according to Johnson’s criteria — a formula which defines the number of pixels that must be covered (3.6) to detect a man-sized object (1.8m high x 0.5m wide). Other parameters include recognition range, i.e. recognising the object is a human or vehicle, and identification range, i.e. identifying the type of car or whether the human is male or female.

Focal Length

The focal length of the lens, in combination with the thermal sensor, dictates the base magnification of the device.

Lens Aperture

Just like in photography, a lower aperture value (such as f1.0) is best in a thermal imaging device, capturing the greatest amount of heat and creating a high contrast, crisp image.

Magnification

A device’s magnification is defined by the combination of its lenses focal length, the size of the thermal sensor and its pixel pitch, and its viewfinder resolution. However, a larger magnification does not necessarily mean a greater detection range.

Digital Zoom

All Pulsar thermal devices feature a digital zoom. As with all devices, zooming digitally will degrade the image, but products with a 12µm pixel pitch are less prone to degradation, as they offer almost double the number of pixels in the same area as a 17µm pitch.

5

SEE THE INVISIBLE

Micro Display Resolution

All thermal devices are fitted with a micro display in the eyepiece; the larger the viewfinder resolution, the greater the image detail.

Micro Display Technology

All micro displays found in Pulsar thermal imaging devices are either OLED or AMOLED, providing high contrast images and working effectively in temperatures down to -25oC.

Field of View

Usually quoted in degrees, a larger field of view allows for quick scanning of broad areas. The field of view usually decreases as magnification increases, assuming that only the focal length of the lens in the system is changing.

Image Processing Algorithms

This is a proprietary software that works to process the image and adjust settings in order to suit the environment, including changes to contrast, brightness, and amplification. Algorithms can be updated and significant advancements in image quality can be achieved through firmware updates.

Questions to Ask Yourself When Buying a Thermal Imaging Device:

1. What are you looking to detect?

2. What distance do you need to detect an object?

3. Which is more important; a wide field of view or greater magnification?

4. Is the device’s size and weight important?

5. What is your budget?
