In winter, hundreds of bald eagles migrate to the Pocono Mountains in search of open water, fresh fish, and undisturbed habitat. In addition to these visiting migrants, the region is also proud of a growing, breeding population of resident eagles. Every Saturday
& Sunday from January 1 through mid-March, trained Eagle Institute volunteers will staff popular viewing locations at Lackawaxen and elsewhere around the Delaware River to assist eagle watchers in sighting these majestic birds. Eagle Institute staffers have spotting scopes, extra binoculars, and helpful information for eagle watchers, and can direct visitors to other viewing locations. From April through September, eagle watching is not encouraged because of the eagles’ sensitivity to human disturbance during this critical time. Please respect these resident eagles and their young! The Eagle Institute Winter Field Office at 176 Scenic Drive in Lackawaxen (at the end of the Roebling Bridge) is open every Friday through Sunday from January until mid-March. Call the office or drop by to learn where eagles are being sighted, or visit their web page at www.eagleinstitute.org and see the “Eagle Forum” message board.
