Throughout its history, San Miguel has been deemed a gold mine in the world of art and design. Why might that be? What is it about this city -its atmosphere, its effects, its eccentricitiesthat attracts actors like Mario Moreno “Cantinflas” or painters like David Alfaro Siqueiros?
Si bien factores tan fundamentales como las coordenadas, la enegía geológica, latitud y altitud han provisto a este pueblo mexicano de excelente luz para pintar y aire limpio para la inspiración, hay otros factores más sutiles y enimgáticos que han sido determinantes en conceder o no a alguien la posibilidad de conquistar esta tierra.
It is easy to see the basic factors, like the geological energy, geographic location and altitude, which provide this Mexican town with the perfect natural lighting for painting and clear air for inspiration. But then, there are the more subtle, enigmatic factors, which determine who is granted the opportunity to conquer this land.

La sociedad en San Miguel es como un gigante roble que por algún motivo permite que la contracultura brote, de alguna manera reúne los requerimientos para que la libertad de expresión, la soltura del ser, y los productos de la imaginación se desarrollen de manera robusta. Uno de estos requerimientos vitales por los cuales el derroche mágico sucede en este lugar es su gente, que heredó de la tierra su apertura por lo diferente. Hence, it would appear that for those who aspire to challenge the system and who live for the love of art, the region arouses the fervor required to reach that destiny. The community of San Miguel is like a massive tree that spontaneously gives rise to a counterculture, whose fruits promote the freedom of speech and the freedom to be oneself. Born of the human imagination, these fruits consistently ripen to their fullest. And the key element that enables the unfolding of this magical plenitude is its people. The people have inherited an openness to what is different directly from the ground on which they stand. San Miguel is a cultural mosaic whose inhabitants have cultivated a wide spectrum of human, artistic, philosophical and spiritual ideologies that imbue the very fabric of this town.

El santuario de Jesús de Nazareno de Atotonilco, inscrito en la Lista de Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO en 2008, construido por los jesuitas a unos 14 kilómetros de San Miguel de Allende, data del siglo XVIII y es uno de los ejemplos más hermosos de la arquitectura y el arte barrocos de la Nueva España. Comprende una gran iglesia y una serie de capillas pequeñas ornamentadas con óleos de Juan Rodríguez Juárez y murales de Miguel Antonio Martínez de Pocasangre. The Sanctuary of Jesús de Nazareno de Atotonilco, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008, built by the Jesuits about 14 kilometers from San Miguel de Allende, dates from the 18th century and is one of the most beautiful examples of baroque architecture and art in New Spain. It comprises a large church and a series of small chapels ornamented with oil paintings by Juan Rodríguez Juárez and murals by Miguel Antonio Martínez de Pocasangre. La Casa No Name, que fue el hogar de la fotógrafa de moda Deborah Turbeville, está impregnada de arte y teñida del romanticismo de un cuento de hadas. Oculta a los ojos del público durante casi 300 años, esta mansión del siglo XVIII se encuentra en el centro histórico de San Miguel de Allende y perteneció originalmente al obispo de la ciudad. The one-time home of fashion photographer Deborah Turbeville, Casa No Name is steeped in artistry and tinged with the romance of a fairytale. Hidden from public eyes for the best part of 300 years, this 18th-century mansion stands in San Miguel de Allende’s centro histórico, originally belonging to the city’s resident bishop. The stone walls in the courtyard are covered by an original mural by Antonio Martínez de Pocasangre, an 18th-century artist known for his biblical scenes.

No es de sorprendernos que en las calles encontremos desde monjes budistas hasta artistas punks. Es bastante normal encontrar actores de Hollywood como Meryl Streep paseando en el mercado de artesanías, Harrison Ford en un concierto navideño en el Teatro Ángela Peralta, o Steven Spielberg cruzando la calle con su familia. Todo este dinamismo sucede en un entorno surrealista, el empedrado de las calles emerge como algo monumental, cada piedra está en su lugar, cada una brilla por el paso del tiempo y carga su propia historia de colocación dando vida a un todo. Es una fiesta, es más probable que despiertes ante un fuego artificial que ante el ruiseñor, los mariachis resuenan en la distancia, y en lo particular miles de historias se llevan a cabo en los recintos coloniales que acoge esta ciudad.

We are not surprised by a group of punk artists or Buddhist monks walking along its streets. Equally common are celebrities, like Hollywood actress Meryl Streep strolling by the craft market, Harrison Ford enjoying at a Christmas concert at the Angela Peralta or even Steven Spielberg crossing the road with his family. All of this is set within a surreal landscape, with cobblestone roads that monumentally emerge, each stone in the right place, radiating from the passage of time, having its own story of how it got there and breathing life into an intricate whole. The city is a celebration. You are more likely to be awakened by fireworks than by a nightingale, with mariachi music playing in distance, while thousands of stories are enacted within the colonial settings that compose this city.

¡Cómo no va a ser la Puerta del Cielo un lugar así, que en su corta extensión contiene los movimientos artísticos y conceptuales más relevantes del país detrás de sus maravillosas puertas! Podríamos definirle como un umbral, una especie de oásis que borra las nacionalidades y categorías de sus visitantes para desnudarles el alma y dejarlos frente a la autenticidad de su esencia. Quizá a esto se deba que en un principio este lugar sea difícil, como mencionaba antes una tierra por conquistar. Muchos han encontrado un ambiente de impacto muy sensible que los ha dejado fuera de la jugada, así como muchas parejas han llegado a este destino solo para darse cuenta de que la relación estaba terminada. Como dicen “la duda mata y la verdad duele” y en San Miguel encontraremos tanta autenticidad que para quienes no estén acostumbrados a ella les será difícil fingir u optar por un cómodo esnobismo. El romanticismo histórico, las guerras, los artistas, los viajeros, la naturaleza misma del lugar, exigen que las personas se eleven por encima de su ordinaria cotidianidad.

How could it not be a gateway to heaven? Within such a tiny space, this city contains works from some of the world´s most pivotal artistic and conceptual movements behind its doors. Perhaps, it is an oasis, an “in-between”, a place that ignores nationality or labels, laying bare the souls of its people and leaving them only with the authenticity of their essence. Maybe this explains the difficulty felt at its origins, as a territory to be conquered. Many found this region far too hostile, a decision that left them out of the game. This is not dissimilar to many couples who arrive at this destination only to figure out that their relationship has come to an end. As the expression goes, “the truth hurts”. In San Miguel, we encounter authenticity, and for those who are unaccustomed, it may be difficult to swallow, opting perhaps for the snobbish shrug off. Filled with artists and travelers, it is a city with age-old romanticism and a history of war. Its sheer nature requires that its inhabitants rise above the everyday.

Además existe una valoración extraordinaria por los servicios que encontramos en los más excelentes hoteles, casas vacacionales, restaurantes, spas y tiendas. San Miguel es de elevado estándar, y esta es una de sus mayores virtudes por el alto valor que hemos sabido otorgar a una calidad de vida incomparable. Es verdad que muchas parejas se separan, pero muchas más escogen este santuario, esta capital del mundo para casarse y unir sus vidas para siempre. Y es precisamente la gente de San Miguel la responsable de esta autenticidad. Las colonias Valle del Maíz, San Antonio, Allende y Guadalupe, representan mucha fuerza para San Miguel por sus tradiciones, artesanías, son zonas muy buscadas por los extranjeros, por ser colonias muy reales, donde su gente nos ha enseñado a ver la vida como debería como realmente es, y a enaltecerla y celebrarla todos los días con sus matices.

Let´s not forget the extraordinary service provided by the city´s world-class hotels, vacation homes, restaurants, shops and spas. San Miguel is upscale, which is one of the strongest selling points. En el Valle del Maíz encontramos una larga tradición en materia de comunidad chichimeca, que celebra a la Santa Cruz por el buen temporal; la colonia Guadalupe es bien conocida por el arte urbano que la embelesa con decenas de grafitis que le hacen frente a temáticas sociales. En la colonia San Antonio encontramos a los mejores carpinteros y artesanos de papel maché y alebrijes que han recorrido el mundo. Es evidente que sobran motivos para afirmar que la más importante de las vueltas que te puedas dar, será aquella que te deje bajo esta Puerta del Cielo, esta Capital del Mundo.
In Valle del Maíz we find a long tradition in the Chichimeca community, which celebrates the Saint Cross for the good harvest. Guadalupe is known for its urban art, with graffiti covering dozens of buildings and attacking social issues. In San Antonio, we find the city´s best carpenters as well as artisans who specialize in papier-maché, especially alebrijes, which have traveled the world. As you can see, there are more than enough reasons to assert that the most important trip you will ever make is the one that brings you to this gateway to heaven, to this capital of the world.

Ahora es un lujoso destino de vacaciones a manos de su propietaria Hadley O’regan, quien ha llevado con gran éxito a ser una de las Casas Vacacionales con mayor ocupación de huéspedes y actividad en eventos sociales, comunitarios y de esparcimiento. Y mi total agradecimiento y respeto para Hadley y a la Casa Proserpina que por segunda vez en mi vida se me abrieron estas puertas a nuevas oportunidades en mi profesión y vocación editorial. La primera vez que visité esta casa hace quince años, era la Casa Editorial de JUARDE (Who are They?), un directorio telefónico creado por los extranjeros residentes de San Miguel desde 1960. Y salí de ahí con el libro bajo mi nombre convirtiéndome en Editor y Publicista y lo que me llevaría a crear esta revista desde cero. Y después de dos años de inactividad por la bendita pandemia, dentro de estas puertas tuve la oportunidad de replantear el renacimiento y reactivación de THIS. Y ahora que es un hecho reitero mi más profundo agradecimiento por permitirme relanzar la versión impresa de esta revista que amo tanto. Gracias a mis colaboradores especiales Gaby, Leo y David que tuvieron la fuerza para estar conmigo durante este arduo ciclo de producción y edición. This cover image is a great representation of THIS’s history as a magazine and my editorial career. Behind this grandiose door is the fabulous Casa Proserpina. An 18th century colonial mansion that has had several rebirths throughout its 300 years of being built. It has the great benefits of colonial architecture, with interior patios, double-height ceilings and adobe walls, which keep besides stories, a rich energy that made the place attracted different owners and experiences. It is now a luxurious vacation destination in the hands of its owner Hadley O’regan, who has successfully led it to be one of the Vacation Homes with the highest guest occupancy and activity in social, community and recreational events.

And my total gratitude and respect to Hadley and to Casa Proserpina that for the second time in my life these doors were opened to me to new opportunities in my profession and editorial vocation. The first time I visited this house fifteen years ago, it was the Editorial House of JUARDE (Who are They?), a telephone directory created by the foreign residents of San Miguel since 1960. And I came out of there with the book under my name becoming Editor and Publisher and what would lead me to create this magazine from scratch. And after two years of inactivity due to the blessed pandemic, within these doors I had the opportunity to rethink the rebirth and reactivation of THIS. En las últimas décadas el mundo del arte ha vivido una verdadera revolución. Las galerías ya no solo se dedican a la comercialización del arte. Su labor también es la formación de públicos, la creación de contenidos editoriales y archivos, y la programación de actividades. Esta información crea una red de colaboraciones con profesionales de la industria tales como museos, ferias, instituciones privadas y gubernamentales. Finalmente, esto abre un campo de acción y oportunidad para galerías y artistas. México es uno de los países líderes en el arte contemporáneo: sus artistas, curadores y coleccionistas destacan en la programación de los más prestigiosos museos, eventos, bienales y galerías del mundo. Sin embargo, San Miguel de Allende casi no participa de este liderazgo. El atractivo de nuestro destino turístico nos provee de un emergente mercado para productos artísticos, pero desprovistos de una estructura que los ponga en valor y que profesionalice el medio local. En San Miguel, añoramos la presencia de un museo que legitime y coleccione la producción artística local. Esto impulsaría las galerías y sus artistas a competir a un nivel nacional e internacional.

ARTE CONTEMPORÁNEO
In recent decades the art world has undergone a true revolution. Galleries are no longer only dedicated to the commercialization of art. They are also involved in the formation of audiences, the creation of editorial content and archives, and the programming of activities. This information creates a network of collaborations with industry professionals such as museums, fairs, private and governmental institutions. Finally, this opens a field of action and opportunity for galleries and artists. Mexico is one of the leading countries in contemporary art: its artists, curators and collectors stand out in the programming of the most prestigious museums, events, biennials and galleries in the world. However, San Miguel de Allende hardly participates in this leadership. The attractiveness of our tourist destination provides us with an emerging market for artistic products, but lacking a structure that values them and professionalizes the local environment. In San Miguel, we long for the presence of a museum that legitimizes and collects the local artistic production. This would encourage galleries and their artists to compete at a national and international level. In San Miguel, some galleries and artistic forums are committed to the creation of a program of professional activities that generates quality content and encourages critical thinking. The Kunsthaus Santa Fe was a precursor of this movement; others followed, such as YAM Gallery and more recently the Trapo Gallery or the Insular Museum. These initiatives broaden the artistic exhibition, and offer a platform for the professionalization of cultural industries in our community. And propose art as a territory of thought, not exclusively decorative.
