China Opposes Unilateral Sanctions against North Korea
China has opposed the unilateral sanctions against North Korea. US President Barack Obama on Wednesday imposed sweeping new sanctions on North Korea intended to further isolate its leadership after recent actions seen by the United States and its allies as provocative. The new sanctions threaten to ban from the global financial system
anyone who does business with broad swaths of North Korea’s economy, including its financial, mining and transport sectors. The so-called secondary sanctions will compel banks to freeze the assets of anyone who breaks the blockade, potentially squeezing out North Korea’s business ties, including those with China.
Asked whether China was worried the sanctions could affect“normal” business links between Chinese banks and North Korea, Foreign Ministry spokesman, Lu Kang, said this was something China was“paying attention to”. “First, as I’ve said many times before, China always opposes any country imposing unilateral sanctions,”
Lu told a daily news briefing in Beijing.“Second, under the present situation where the situation on the Korean Peninsula is complex and sensitive, we oppose any moves that may further worsen tensions there.” “Third, we have clearly stressed many times in meetings with the relevant county, any so-called unilateral sanctions imposed by any
country should neither affect nor harm China’s reasonable interests.” China is North Korea’s sole major ally but it disapproves of its nuclear program and calls for the Korean peninsula to be free of nuclear weapons. While China has signed up for tough new U.N. sanctions against North Korea, it has said repeatedly sanctions are not the answer and that only a resumption of talks can resolve the dispute over North Korea’s weapons program. The U.S. measures, which vastly expand a U.S. blockade of North Korea, prohibit the export of goods from the United States to North Korea.

U.S. officials had previously believed a blanket trade ban would be ineffective without a stronger commitment from China, North Korea’s largest trading partner. North Korea conducted a nuclear test on Jan. 6, and on Feb. 7 it launched a rocket that the United States and its allies said employed banned ballistic missile technology. China signed on to the new U.N. sanctions against North Korea this month. But U.S. officials and experts have often questioned China’s commitment to enforcing sanctions on North Korea. China fears that too-harsh measures will destabilize the North.

Palestinians Stab Israeli Woman, Shot Dead
CHANGE OF NAME
Two Palestinians stabbed and wounded an Israeli woman and were then shot and killed outside a Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank, the military said. Since October, Palestinian street attacks have killed 28 Israelis and two U.S. citizens. Israeli forces have killed at least 187 Palestinians, 126
of whom Israel says were assailants. Most others were shot dead during violent protests. In a statement, the military said the latest incident occurred at a road junction outside the settlement of Ariel.“Forces at the scene responded to the attack and shot the assailants, resulting in their
deaths. The woman is being evacuated for medical care,”it said. The surge in violence has been partly fueled by Palestinian frustration over the collapse of U.S.-sponsored peace talks in 2014, the growth of Jewish settlements on land they seek for a future state, and Islamist calls for the destruction of Israel.
Kremlin Condemns Donald Trump’s Preelection Clip The Kremlin yesterday hit out at a pre-election video promoting U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump at Hillary Clinton’s expense, complaining that it demonized Russia. “I saw this clip. I do not know for sure if (President)Vladimir Putin saw it. (But) our attitude is negative,” Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov told a teleconference with reporters. The video attempts to cast doubt over Clinton’s ability to deal with Putin, whom it casts as a U.S. foe. Presenting what it suggests are America’s toughest opponents on the world stage, it shows the Russian leader easily throwing an opponent in a judo bout before cutting to footage of Mohammed Emwazi, the late Islamic State executioner nicknamed “Jihadi John”. It then cuts to a clip of Clinton in which sounds resembling a dog barking have been overlaid. Putin is then shown laughing.“It’s an open secret for us that demonizing Russia and whatever is linked to Russia is unfortunately a mandatory hallmark
of America’s election campaign,”said Peskov.“We always sincerely regret this and wish the (U.S.) electoral process was conducted without such references to our country.” Russian state TV, which usually closely reflects the Kremlin’s world view, has generally been more positive about Trump than the other presidential candidates. However it has complained about what it says is the anti-Russian tenor of the overall campaign, criticizing almost all of the candidates for statements they have made on Russia.
The United States accused Russia of not bombing Islamic State targets in Syria with the same ferocity or frequency as it targeted what Washington said were more moderate groups opposed to President Bashar al-Assad. The Kremlin has denied that charge, declaring Islamic State a dangerous threat to its own security. It has bristled in the past at any Western attempts to liken the threat Russia purportedly poses to the West to that represented by Islamic State.
Kurdish Militant Group Claims Responsibility for Ankara Bombing The Kurdistan Freedom Hawks (TAK) militant group yesterday claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing in the Turkish capital Ankara that killed 37 people, and said it would attack security forces again. Separately, Germany closed
its embassy in Ankara and its general consulate in Istanbul due to indications that an attack could be imminent. The German school in Istanbul was also shut due to an “unconfirmed warning”, the German Foreign Ministry said.
