ll too often, this city is defined by the intrigues of the nation’s decision makers as they go about the business of governing. It goes without saying that Canberra was created to facilitate Federal Government and to accommodate the museums and monuments that define the nation, and this is the image that most Australians have of their capital. While it is true that this city has been planned to be the mantle piece of the nation, it is refreshing to discover unique precincts that have developed spontaneously to offer diverse experiences. There are great places to eat—from the best in fine dining to quick and inexpensive bites—and many places to have a drink and unwind. Or if you are in need of a little retail therapy check out the unique local businesses that offer everything from great fashion and jewellery to gifts and home ware. Treat this book as your personal guide and you will soon be navigating this city like a local. Alex Tricolas, Editor.

ere is a restaurant that delivers a dining experience to match the sensational view, and certainly suggests that one is far better off seeing the sights at dinnertime with a delicious meal and a perfect glass of wine, rather than jostling with the masses during the day. Clean lines and minimalist white décor hint that modern sophistication now reigns in the lofty heights of Black Mountain, and the food confirms it. Chef Noel Phear has created a modern Australian menu with innovative European influences. Expect a starter of coffin bay oysters, shucked to order with a mignonette granita, or a twice cooked black truffle

and manchego soufflé. Mains may include organic chicken breast stuffed with sour dough and dill, or twice cooked pork belly with braised fennel and caramel poached pear. Finish with a hot chocolate soufflé accompanied by a berry and mint sorbet, or selection of local and international cheese. The extensive wine list features a solid selection of local, regional and international wines as well as some sumptuous sparklings and champagnes. At the front, maitre d’ Adrian Webster leads the knowledgeable, friendly and unpretentious staff in creating the perfect combination of culinary and visual bliss.

nnovative Modern Australian cuisine is served either inside the sun lit dining room or on the wide deck, both of which boast expansive views over the lake. This is a contemporary restaurant, with a very smooth feel and one of the best views in Canberra. In typical Australian style the menu is influenced by Asia and Europe and utilises some of the best local ingredients. This is evident in the Salad of wagyu beef served with seaweed & petite leaves, seared spring bay scallops

& baby cress with a green horseradish aioli. Or the very popular Creole spiced Bundawarra free range pork fillet resting on softened polenta with vanilla braised pork belly on savoy cabbage. Service is what you would expect from this type of establishment, with professional well informed and attentive staff on hand to make things run smoothly. An extensive wine list with some great Australian or local labels complements the fresh and seasonal menu, and the desserts are a cut above.

are Spanish small goods such as jamon, salamanca and salchichon. Dishes may be ordered individually, or as part of a degustation. A serious approach to wine is evident in the two wine-lists available, one with a comprehensive selection of Spanish wines, the other covering all areas of Australia – including the Canberra region – along with selected French and German labels. A large terrace area gives diners the option of al fresco dining; and inside, the decor indicates that the heritage spirit has been taken to heart here. Victorian era lounges, interesting early 20th century posters, intricate cornices and parquetry floors adding to the old world feel in this smart establishment.

his smart and sophisticated bistro is located in the popular dining precinct at New Acton, directly behind the Diamant hotel. Large white carrara marble tables, which run the length of the dining room, share the space with more intimate settings for four or less. White marble blends easily with dark hardwood floors and ornate cornices on the high ceilings, and artwork that ranges from the conventional to the avant garde adorns the walls. The open kitchen allows the wood

Diners may choose to sit inside or in one of two outdoor spaces that dominate the beautifully restored exterior of this lovely old building. Chef and owner Grant Kells impresses with his modern international bistro menu that may feature starters such as a traditional French onion soup or seared yellow fin tuna with asparagus, baby herbs and a white truffle dressing. For mains, expect a wood fired swordfish steak with shallot and

soy salsa, or the “plate of pork” with slow cooked belly, loin dusted with porcini powder, braised cabbage filled with pork confit and a cardamon jus. Sweets may include a coconut milk infused tapioca, or a “plate of dark chocolate decadence”: a medley which includes chocolate tart with vanilla cream orange compote, chocolate mousse with raspberry coulis and chocolate “Twix” biscuits with chocolate tuile. A serious wine list covers France and Germany alongside most regions in Australia, including some good locals.

ith a selection of 500 old-world and new-world wines–100 of those available by the glass–it certainly seems to have achieved its goal. In 2005, Gourmet Traveller named Benchmark as one of the best wine bars in the country. More recently it was awarded 3 Glasses in the Australian Wine List Awards for 2008 and 2009. Chef Louise Darbyshire’s seasonally updated menu sits firmly in the Modern European school and borrows from the cuisines of the mediterranean, with offerings such as pan roasted lamb rack, petit

ratatouille and chick pea skordalia, or salt cured quail breast with beetroot skordalia and a basil infused olive oil, sourced from owner Tasso Rovolis’ family olive grove in Kalamata, Greece.. Desserts are a little more French as typified by a mango souffle with passionfruit icecream. Tasso is always on hand to assist in the selection of the perfect drop to match diners' meals and share some of his extensive knowledge. A degustation course is offered with or without wines; but surely in a place such as this, sampling the many wines available seems the only sensible thing to do.

hina Plate is the latest contributor to the Chinese food scene in Canberra, and is determined to bring some Hong Kong style to the capital. With senior chefs flown in from that vibrant metropolis, one can be assured that they will find an authentic indication of current directions in this mostly Cantonese cuisine. Dim sum starters such as har-gao are light as a feather while being packed with chunks of prawn. Lightly battered bean curd comes with a slice of crab meat and is wrapped in seaweed. Mustard king prawns have a wasabi-like kick, and are typical of the type of presentation favoured here. Live seafood is important in this restaurant, and is served simply with freshness being key. Guests may choose their fish, then ask for it to be either steamed, pan or

deep fried. Similarly, crustaceans such as lobster and crab are given a cooking style according to guests’ liking – and may include hot rock salt; garlic butter; or ginger and shallot. A good range of traditional Chinese dishes, house specialities, and some Aussie-Chinese favourites round out the carefully thought out menu. The fitout is modern and minimalist: simple cream walls are set off with muted brown ceilings; glossy black light shades cast a warm yellow glow; and embossed table cloths add to the upmarket feel. Accoutrements such as napkin holders, chopsticks and rice servers have an attention to detail that hints at the gilded finery of imperial China, and waitstaff – dressed immaculately in smart grey Chinese collar shirts – give efficient and accommodating service.

that its dishes are better than Thailand, Lemon Grass owner Chris Macintosh points out that the ingredients available here are of such high quality, yet traditional methods and recipes are retained. Choose from a selection including an entree of tender chicken char grilled satays or deep fried king prawns with almond flakes. For mains, find a mild yellow chicken curry with coconut milk, potato and vegetables or the

house speciality of char grilled pork marinated in lemon grass sauce, served with a spicy vegetable salad. Banquets are available for groups of four or more, a well priced wine list rounds it off, and an easy walk to a number of city hotels makes this a great choice for dinner or lunch. If you are staying on the southside, Lemon Grass has a second restaurant offering the same menu as the city, in a large, modern premises.

O

wner Carlo Tosolini and chef Peter Spencer are always on hand to ensure that their patrons, who have come seeking those things that haven’t changed in over twenty years – such as great coffee and quality modern Italian cuisine – are well catered for in the funky surroundings. The dining room is a palette of warm browns and muted reds, a lively mix of diners at the tables and coffee lovers on the leather lounges. The fireplace takes pride of place in the centre of the room and creates a warm and cosy atmosphere on those cold Canberra nights. The outdoor area is lovely in the warmer months with the mature trees acting as a perfect canopy. The menu features pasta such as penne al pesto, with sun dried tomatoes,

toasted pine nuts, fresh basil and white wine, as well as modern dishes like chargrilled deep sea cod served on a warm fennel, leek and potato salad with a lemon and caper butter sauce. Salads may be classics like insalata Caprese and pizzas are served in traditional square-cut slices on wooden cutting boards. Those patrons just after coffee and a cake should not go past the tiramisu which is made fresh by Carlo’s mother Valentina and has almost acquired legendary status in Canberra. It’s probably the best version of this traditional dessert in the city – or any where else, for that matter. And if you can’t get to Tosolinis then have your meal delivered to you Italian style – on a Vespa. Check menus on the Tosolinis website.

Lovers of this cuisine have been dining out at his restaurant Iori for close to a decade, and now Mamoru has opened Coo just a couple of doors down with a view to offering a traditional Izakaya experience in the nation’s capital. rawing on its heritage listed setting in Enrico Taglietti’s 1966 Centre Cinema Building, the split level interior of this smart cafe has retro-modernist feel; with angled columns, white walls and brown and orange touches reminiscent of a Stanley Kubrik set. Chef Brad Warton delivers a menu of modern dishes that could sit easily in a more formal setting, but ultimately elevate this establishment above what is expected of a café. Find light dishes like a delicately poached salmon on potato salad with red peppers and roasted tomato, or flat grilled prawns with sweet corn salsa, sitting on an avocado purée and served on a wooden slab. For mains, pork belly is twice cooked and accompanied by green apple

coleslaw and a cauliflower purée; lamb rump is wrapped in prosciutto and served with an almond skordalia and baby spinach; and pasta may be a linguine with prawns, mussels, basil and broccolini. Desserts may include a raspberry ricotta meringue; a sticky date pudding with butterscotch sauce and ice cream, or a selection of cakes from the display at the bar. A very good wine list takes in labels from Australia, New Zealand and Europe, including France, Germany and Spain. Separate menus exist for breakfast, lunch or dinner; coffee and cakes are available all day, and a heated outdoor area is busy year round allowing diners to take in the atmosphere of this busy corner of the city.

us’– Canberra's oldest outdoor café – has been highly regarded for its mix of great coffee and inner-city vibe for decades. Today this heritage listed café is managed by a vibrant young team – headed by siblings Stephen Rockmann and Janice Glenn – which has certainly taken the Gus' legacy to heart over the course of the last decade and a half. This is reflected in the care they take to maintain all that is great about this spot in busy Bunda street. The recent indoor refurbishment has re-interpreted elements of the original fit-out, whilst giving a modern

feel, and the two sprawling outdoor areas continue to dominate this corner of the city. The menu offers great coffee, hearty all-day breakfasts, and delicious toasted sandwiches that have made this place an institution, along with more substantial main dishes such as mini corn cakes with cucumber yoghurt and smoked salmon salad, or steamed fish fillets with mussels, chilli, coconut, lime sauce and sweet potato rounds. For those after something sweet, don't go past their house-made banana bread with strawberries, cream and maple syrup.

lu Ginger opened in early 2009 and has gained a solid following amongst lovers of quality Indian food in the heart of the CBD. This restaurant certainly has a big city feel, with a cavernous yet well appointed dining room enhanced by polished floors, dark timber furnishings and towering polished concrete Y frames that attract the eye upwards and give a feeling of openness. From the kitchen, expect to find a range of contemporary yet authentic dishes that confirm this is no mum-and-dad ethnic diner. Starters may be tandoori quail, marinated in freshly ground spices, with a touch of lemon, cheese, and grilled in the tandoor oven; or ling fillets marinated with a green paste of mint, coriander, chillies, fresh ginger, carawee seeds and yoghurt, steamed in banana leaves. Classic curries

are refined and flavoursome, and are given a heat rating on the menu. Ever popular rogan josh has a rich gravy, and comes with fresh tomatoes and coriander; a Sagwala is made with lamb, beef or chicken, and cooked with a spinach puree and cream. Seafood is represented by wok tossed prawns marinated in ginger and garlic; or a hot and spicy Sri Lankan fish curry. A range of specials, most of which are unique to Blu Ginger and rarely seen outside India, feature on the blackboard and change weekly. Desserts are relatively simple and may be ice cream with lychees, or traditional favourites like gulab jamun or pistachio kulfi. A concise yet good wine list offers some well known Australian labels, and a number of beers are available by the bottle, including a couple of Indian labels perfect for spicy food.

hite marble, stainless steel and ceramic come together as an homage to art deco in the slick modern space that is Cream. Here you see business types all hours of the day, either grabbing a Cream blend coffee to go, or meeting clients over a light lunch. Sunsets are greeted with after-work drinks just as diners arrive for chef Craig Ebeling’s impressive menu of globally influenced contemporary dishes. The selection includes wok fried bug and soft shell crab in XO chilli sauce with green papaya, snow pea sprouts and snake beans. Or an eye fillet on roast garlic mash with baby carrots, shiraz jus and a red onion jam. Those looking for a light meal

may choose a barbecued atlantic salmon salad – Cream’s take on niçoise – with cos lettuce, tomato, green beans, potato and boiled egg. Desserts are a little higher up the food chain than the average café, without getting too highbrow. They may include a vanilla bean brulée with almond and grand marnier biscotti, or a bitter chocolate and ginger parfait with chocolate Persian fairy floss and praline. On weekends the brunch crowd descends, newspapers in hand, to take in the ambience. At the front of house, the floor staff are enthusiastic and attentive, ensuring the satisfaction of patrons, and the outdoor dining area is usually buzzing with activity.

his bustling restaurant is a brand new version of the previous Sammy’s, which was located across the road and famous for simple high quality Chinese and Malay cuisine with a focus on traditional favourites. Many Canberrans would rate Sammy’s when discussing where you can find the city’s best laksa or hawker noodle dishes like char kway teow. Also extremely popular

here are a number of chef’s favourites that include Shan Tung chicken – deep fried and shredded with cucumber, garlic and peanuts; or the Sammy’s Kitchen special – marinated pork, chicken, calamari, scallops and broccoli in oyster sauce. Seriously worth a try are some of the range of Malaysian curry dishes like gulai ayam – boneless chicken with potatoes and fragrant curry. Owner Sammy Chui is a

veteran of the Canberra food industry, having been a partner in the famous Timmy’s Kitchen in Manuka – which he still owns – for many years until opening Sammy’s sixteen years ago. Recently, he made the decision to relocate across the road and be part of the North Quarter dining precinct, and hence Sammy’s is now bigger and brighter, but obviously busier than ever with locals and visitors alike.

he menu in this relaxed and pleasant cafĂŠ covers most bases and offers breakfast, lunch, tapas, and dinner on selected evenings. Cuisine is typical of the modern cafĂŠ style, with influence primarily from the Mediterranean and some Balkan specialities rounding it off nicely. For tapas expect skinless cevapi sausages wrapped in smoked pork belly; or arrancini - mushroom risotto balls stuffed with bocconcini cheese. Gourmet pizzas are crispy and light, with

toppings such as pear, walnut and gorgonzola; or a more familiar olive, anchovy and salami affair. From the grill, try a New York sirloin with chips and salad; or a mighty Sour Cherry mixed grill, with scotch fillet, spicy Balkan cevapi and kobasica sausages and a chicken skewer vying for room on a plate along with beer battered chips and salad. Pastas and risottos are also represented, as are salads. Blackboard specials are certainly worth a try, and tend to shoot a little higher

in terms of refinement and vision, especially in the evenings. On offer from the bar are a number of tap beers and bottled beers, a good selection of Australian wines, and quality ONA brand coffee, along with a simple selection of cakes, slices and home made biscuits. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoons and evenings, you will find live entertainment that may include a jazz duet or a DJ, while you enjoy a pizza, tapas or a drink under the beautiful canopy of mature trees.

ust one block from the city, and an easy walk or short cab ride away from many northside hotels, heritage listed Gorman House is the home of Sage, a sophisticated little restaurant with a smart dining room for around forty, and shady courtyard for sunny days and warm nights. Owner and manager Peter Harrington oversees a knowledgeable frontof-house team, so expect attentive service to complement an exciting and innovative menu created by head chef Mark Raets.

Typical dishes include seared scallops with jamón serrano, celeriac purée, dijon mustard and a potato crisp; or barramundi with salsa verde and grape cheeks. Sweet tooths may be sated by a green apple panacotta with lime jelly and apple tapioca, or a reworking of the classic pavlova, a little island of meringue with mango, blueberry and mint in a strawberry soup. For diners wishing to sample a range of flavours coming out of the kitchen, the ‘Sage Signature Series’ is a clever way to create their own personal degustation

from any item on the menu. Starters, mains or desserts may be selected, and the emphasis here is definitely on immaculate presentation regardless. Whilst Peter, Mark and the team have high ambition – ensuring that Sage takes its place among the city’s best – the menu is very reasonably priced and the feel is comfortable and accessible.

Stratos Greek Taverna is located in Braddon’s Lonsdale street, just one block back from a number of Northbourne Avenue hotels. Owner Stan Daglis has created a relaxed and unpretentious setting — polished concrete floors, boldly painted walls and bi-fold doors that open up inviting the sounds of the street into the colourful space in the warmer months. Seafood lovers should be aware that whole fresh fish, grilled and basted with lemon and olive oil, are what O Stratos does best, and there is always a good selection to choose from on the blackboard. Meze style dishes of calamari and octopus are always popular here, and in true Greek fashion, baby octopus is overlooked in favour of the larger variety. Hard to source

but well worth it, the thick tentacles deliver the expected iodine flavour, but with flesh that has a texture closer to lobster. Expect to find traditional favourites such as Moussaka, dolmades and Yemista featuring prominently on the menu, and a grill working overtime turning out souvlaki skewers of lamb, pork or chicken, or lamb cutlets. Vegetarians are well catered for, with the standout being the Spanakopita, oversized flaky triangles of pastry filled with spinach, dill and feta cheese. Those adventurous souls wishing to try Greek wine — other than Retsina — will be pleasantly surprised by good quality reds like the Boutari Syrah or Xinomavro (merlot) and crisp whites such as Santorini or Kretikos.

he depth of flavour and unfussed presentation of the food on offer at Kitschen proves once more that you can’t judge a book by its cover. Get past the industrial looking exterior of this establishment on this industrial looking street, and you will be rewarded by a choice of modern, flavoursome Italian inspired dishes that will pleasantly surprise. Chef and owner James Forman offers a menu that features a strong range of pastas and risottos. Expect a robust fettuccine con vitello, with veal, chorizo, roasted garlic and a piquant touch thanks to a creamy mustard

sauce; or a deep and gamey duck risotto with port, purple cabbage and mushrooms. For mains, a beef striploin is rolled with pancetta, set on lightly battered vegetables and lifted by a porcini and tarragon butter; and saltimbocca combines pancetta and veal with a sage buerre noisette. Be sure to finish with an amazing poached pear served on a hazelnut crumble base with zabaglione and a red wine cinnamon, vanilla and clove glaze. A well priced wine list rounds things up very nicely and an easy walk home to your hotel makes this an appealing choice.

his buzzing establishment on Braddon’s Lonsdale street is casual, funky and understated, and adds to the streetscape along with quirky retailers and art galleries in this semi industrial setting. Debacle opens for breakfast lunch and dinner, three hundred and sixty three days a year, and chef Katherine Brown’s menu features a wide choice of dishes that range from a Greek-style lamb burger with minted yoghurt to beer battered flathead fillets with chips, home made tartare and green salad. A large range of gourmet pizzas feature prominently and tapas are also available, alongside an ever-changing daily blackboard menu. Typical are offerings like panfried haloumi, marinated in lemon and thyme, with

wild rocket; or grilled quail with speck, radicchio, red onion and lentil salad. Breakfast is another Debacle specialty. It may be as simple as spicy fruit bread with home made jams or a massive Debacle Recovery Brekky, which includes fried eggs, tomato, baked beans, bacon, rosti, snags, mushrooms, and a coffee. The focus on fresh produce here borders on the obsessive – there isn't even a freezer on-premise. Those just after a drink will be tempted by one of the seventy imported beers or thirty wines available by the glass. On the floor, charismatic floor managers David and Danny keep things moving along smoothly, ensuring the lively crowd of after-work professionals and hungry locals are well looked after.

ver the last decade or so, All Bar Nun has set the trend for the kind of relaxed gastro-pub establishments that have become popular in Canberra’s inner north. Here you will find a casual outlook in a local pub that serves simple and unpretentious fare such as gourmet pizzas, chicken burgers, antipasto and salads. Match that with one of Canberra's largest selections of international and domestic beers and you realise why this venue is so popular amongst the locals. Gourmet pizzas are interesting combinations such as spinach & bacon with mushrooms, feta cheese and olives; or a vegetarian option like mushrooms, Spanish onion and blue cheese. Mains may be one of the range of burgers, such as the falafel burger with guacamole and beer

battered chips, or a Thai beef salad of mixed lettuce with toasted pine nuts, rice sticks & a sweet chilli, lemon and coriander dressing. A good range of tapas may be starters or just a quick bite. Expect thinly sliced chorizo sausage or salt and pepper calamari, along with pizza bread with dips. After work drinks, lazy lunches and casual dinners are the main focus here during the week, and Sunday afternoons remain popular with the young and hip during warmer months. All Bar Nun is well known for its affiliations with many sporting groups, and provides large screen viewing of the big sporting events. Remote broadband access is also available for customers to study, work or just play around on the internet. Enjoy the weekend with a cool drink and good friends.

t the Cape street end of Woolley street you will find Sub Urban, sitting conspicuously on the art-deco styled corner it calls home. Sub Urban opened it’s doors in 2008 (on the site where the well known and loved Belluci’s once sat) with a mission to cater to the inner north’s love of pubs that also serve top nosh. The gorgeous fitout features classic timber panelling in the restaurant end, giving it the feel of a New York grill, whilst the pub end keeps it ultra cool with a masterpiece island bar and art nouveau touches. You can’t miss the 1930’s feel of the interior, and certainly get the impression that this is a tribute to classic Canberra

– think OPH. The classic theme continues on the menu with chef Anton Shaw combining the standard Belluci's Italian inspired fare with a range of steaks, or pork ribs with a choice of smokey barbecue or spicy asian sauces. Other mains feature pollo porto – chicken breast with king prawns and a creamy port reduction sauce – that can certainly be described as comfort food, and of course a range of pizzas and pastas that Belluci’s are known for. Finish with a tiramisu or a New York cheesecake and wander over to the bar to make a night of it, or start at the pub end with their range of light meals such as tapas, burgers, fish and chips, or pizzas.

hough the safe and familiar options such as Mongolian lamb or satay chicken appear on the menu, and are presented to a very high standard here, you’ll miss the point if you only order in that vein. Ruby’s strength lies in the simple and fresh presentation of traditional dishes, where the quality of the produce and the expertise of the chefs are given centre-stage. Nowhere is this more evident than in the live seafood, trucked in regularly from around Australia. Expect to find a range of fish such as coral trout or morwong, lobster, eel or abalone in the impressive tank displays that line the walls. their advice, they do know best. One of the original restaurants on Dickson’s Woolley street, Ruby reminds one of a classic Chinatown eatery, and has contributed to cementing this street’s reputation as the mecca of Asian dining in Canberra. And like a Chinatown eatery, Ruby is open late – it is not uncommon to find this restaurant still open around midnight, and more often than not, catering to other Chinese restaurateurs. While patronage of an ‘ethnic’ eatery by the diaspora en masse is the conventional formula used to judge a place for quality and authenticity, this endorsement – by experts in their field – should serve as a sign of their standing.

pened mid 2007, pizza bar Firestone sits comfortably in this eclectic smörgåsbord of flavour, with its Italian inspired menu that features wood-fired pizzas – as the name may suggest. The restaurant has a fresh and hip feel. Plush bench seats run the length of the long narrow space and dark timber furniture sits on a polished concrete floor. Staff are young and cheerful, and the feeling is casual and light. Woodfired pizzas are perfectly crisp, and calzones may be stuffed with traditional fillings like mozzarella,

pepperoni or artichoke. A wide selection of sharing plates of tidbits such as calamari, haloumi or swimmer-crab risotto balls feature alongside the expected offerings of pastas, risottos and other main meals to round out the savoury. The sweet, however gets quite novel. A range of sweet pizzas such as strawberry, marshmallow and white chocolate give a twist on dessert that works surprisingly well. A good selection of Australian wines and imported and local beers cover the beverages quite well.

ere is an inner north eatery with an unfussed atmosphere–slightly distressed café chairs and tables, polished concrete floors and muted browns create the landscape in which unpretentious waiting staff navigate the room, always friendly yet non intrusive. outright rejects million dollar fitouts in favour of rustic simplicity; and shuns haute cuisine in favour of real, flavoursome food and masterful technique. The menu highlights all that is good about European food by staying close to its rural roots. One may find roasted octopus with merguez sausage and white beans; or a duck confit with kipfler potatoes and hazelnuts. Heartier dishes may include braised lamb shanks with parsley puree and red onion confit. A great selection is also available on the blackboard and almost always

features a perfect dry-aged sirloin. Desserts include sophisticated offerings such as white chocolate parfait with peaches poached in champagne. Most dishes are available as either entrée or main, and prices can only be described as sensible. A small and interesting wine list focuses on European bistro wines as well as Canberra region labels.

he Uni Pub, located on the corner of University Avenue and London Circuit, is a venue that excites through its sheer ambition. Australia’s only five storey pub opened just before Christmas 2006 with a view to catering to the growing number of professional workers, uni students and residents on the west side of the expanding CBD, and is certainly worth a visit for thirsty travellers in the city. Each level of this multi storey complex has a fully equipped bar with beer on tap and a great selection of wines & spirits. Each level is beautifully fitted out in a classic style and each has its own purpose: On street level you will find the Pub Bar, opening out to the street with plenty of outdoor tables for patrons enjoying an after work drink. The first floor offers a restaurant, specialising in grilled pub fare; the second floor is dedicated to pool tables; the third is a lounge bar with a very exclusive feel and the top floor is a nightclub. Canberra’s biggest and newest pub is a great experience for those looking for a place that caters to a number of tastes and activities.

ver ten Irish and Australian beers are available on tap, including Guinness, Kilkenny, Coopers and Bulmer's Cider. There's also a cocktail menu and the finest scotches, including Johnny Walker blue label. Meals are available all day, and include the popular wicklow wedges, BBQ prawns and beef and Guinness pie. You can catch a live band most nights of the week, and on Sunday nights, Irish folk musicians gather round a 100 year old bluegum table to play traditional Irish music. A wonderfully decorated interior has many areas to discover, each with their own unique character and charm, such as the Brewery Room, Blarney Room and

The King's Snug. The warmer months are best enjoyed in the outdoor beer garden where patrons can soak in the city activity. A pub named after one of the city's founders needs to share in some history, and a fantastic collection of artefacts that date from the 1800s, including a pennyfarthing and a plate from a furfey water cart, are on display. King O'Malleys contributions to the local community have seen it become a hub for Canberrans celebrating the biggest annual events such as St Patricks Day, Movember, and the Leukaemia Foundation's World's Greatest Shave for a Cure, so grab a beer, enjoy the sunshine and meet the locals.

ax and Marvin have been involved in the food industry for quite some time and are well known in Canberra for their hospitality. With Saffron, their mission over the last six years has been to create a refined dining experience that pays tribute to their roots and embraces all that is shared with the cuisines of the Middle East. From the kitchen, expect a starter of pan seared scallops in white wine, garlic and coriander; or crumbed and fried haloumi cheese with lemon juice and dill. Mains may include lamb cutlets with tomato puree, red wine, chilli & olive oil; or basa dory fillet baked in chilli sauce and coriander, served with

a sprinkle of roasted nuts. For for a more communal experience, Saffron offer mezze banquets that feature an array of authentic delights, perfect to share. One may find Lebanese sausages, dolmades or falafel, all served in beautiful imported stoneware vessels, along with minced lamb pizzas and tabouli salad. Service is genuinely warm and wine matching is well executed for those in unfamiliar territory. A great way to finish is with a saffron pear dessert or baklava and a thick coffee in the Middle Eastern style. Decor is simple and elegant, the dining room a light and cheerful space with linen on tables keeping it smart, and outdoor dining is also available.

erving a modern style of Chinese and Malay cuisine, this bright and friendly little restaurant has been doing a consistently solid trade since it opened its doors in the mid nineties. Owners Abell Ong and Lorna Sim have managed to combine the tastes of their Malaysian and Chinese origins with an array of unique and innovative dishes and offer them on a menu that also features traditional favourites. The formula has proven so popular that booking ahead is advisable even on the quieter nights. The dining room is colourful and informal and there is ample

seating outside for those wishing to dine al fresco. That said, the food is what this place packs them in for, and the menu is exemplified by dishes such as ‘My mum's laksa’, bee hoon noodles with coconut curry flavours and served with chicken or seafood – one of the best in town; or sand whiting, tempura battered and accompanied by a nashi pear salad. Tofu is crisp fried and comes with a sweet chilli and peanut sauce; and crispy skinned chicken may be served with coriander and a soy dipping sauce. Finish with a black sticky rice pudding and you will truly feel satisfied.

his restaurant continues to win awards and has cemented its place as one of Canberra’s most loved dining destinations for young and old. The reason has been the emphasis on looking after the whole family, and this means that the staff and management will go out of their way to make little ones feel at home with nice gestures like handing out colouring-in paper and crayons, leaving mums and dads to enjoy their evening without being frowned upon for bringing the kids. Le Rendezvous chef and co-owner Brad Wolter continues to refine the menu and shows that family dining can be as sophisticated as the best of

them; so alongside the pizzas and pastas that have been the mainstay in this restaurant for over forty years, expect to find oven roasted salmon topped with salsa verde butter, served with baby potatoes, calamari and artichoke. Or perhaps a chargrilled eye fillet with garlic potato mash, goats cheesefilled mushrooms, greens and a beef jus. Wines are sensibly priced and a good range of beers is available. There is ample seating both inside and in the atrium area, and an island kiosk sits at the front of the restaurant ensuring all are contented at the end of their meals with gelati and slushies for the kids and coffee for the grownups.

atsamy had been a driving force in the kitchens of a number of Thai restaurants over the years before venturing into her own business with partner Thong Sysengthong. Flavours at Baan Latsamy are authentic Thai with a delicate touch. An entree of eggplant, chicken and prawn presents as a three layered and lightly battered morsel which manages to keep each of its parts distinct in flavour and texture. Red duck curry is a well balanced affair, with coconut milk adding a subtle smoothness and lychees giving a not-overpowering sweet dimension. Mint and coriander combine beautifully with rare beef in the ‘Crying Tiger’, a typically spicy and

sour Thai salad that is served at room temperature and is perfect accompanied by a cold beer (the establishment is quick to recommend BeerLao). Expect to find simple desserts that range from ice cream and cakes to black sticky rice with fresh mango, and a number of local wines on the substantial wine list. The dining room has an open feel, with the full length glass along two sides of the restaurant letting in ample light. Décor is a combination of warm brown walls and carpets with the odd bold colour, such as the interesting yellow cladding behind the bar, and covered outdoor seating is available on the alfresco terrace at the side of the restaurant.

he secret of success here is an uncomplicated Chinese menu with hints of Western technique employed by owner and chef Rockie Cheung in this lively double storey restaurant with Flinders Street views. Rockie is a Canberra boy, completing his apprenticeship locally, before working at Sydney's Opera House and Radisson Plaza. If he spends more time overseeing his other venture at the Hellenic Club in Woden these days, his father Tung Shing, a traditional Chinese chef with many years of experience in the local industry, makes things happen in the kitchen, whilst coowner Judy Tran is on hand to make things run

smoothly at the front. The result is a refined and scrumptious menu that impresses sufficiently with dishes such as chicken, sausage and beancurd hotpot; or prawn, ginger and shallot with baby bok choy. Some other Asian flavours creep into the menu with great success, such as a very delicately flavoured wasabi steak or one of the very good laksas. The mix of cuisines means a unique serving style – both individual starters and mains, and some 80 dishes for sharing are options. The dining rooms have recently been made over and now feature relaxed cream and brown interiors along with glass windows on both floors which fold open for al fresco dining in the warmer months.

or the past four years Mecca Bah has been creating a menu reliant on the adventurous use of exotic herbs and spices to create distinctive flavour combinations. Under the watchful eye of head chef James Rivard, the subtle flavours and fragrant spice combinations are drawn together with quality Australian produce to create a modern interpretation of Moroccan and Middle Eastern cuisine. The innovative

menu encourages guests to taste a range flavours in an informal, communal dining experience. Mezze are served in hand made serving dishes from Tunisia and include Turkish kofte with yoghurt and mint sauce and kataifi pastries filled with Middle Eastern cheeses. Award-winning Turkish pizzas, such as roast pumpkin, chilli, pomegranate jam and feta, and classic tagines, including lamb with preserved lemon, green olive and harissa,

are always popular menu choices. Warm colours, soft cushions, and Middle Eastern trimmings, such as rows of colourful tagine pots and intricate mosaic wallpaper, decorate the restaurant. Deep banquette lounges allow guests to soak up the ambience. An intimate private dining room offers some privacy for larger groups, with exquisite lead-light lanterns adding to the illusion of a traditional Moroccan eating house.

n the sun-soaked corner of Franklin street and Flinders way, you will find Verve, a busy and bustling restaurant that has won a solid following of Canberrans and visitors looking for a fun place to get together. Whilst the menu is fresh and creative, and the service eager, the reason so many keep coming back is that they may simply enjoy the overall ambience of the place. It may be the large window fascia that allows them to see the world go by even when dining within the modern dining room, or it may be that they enjoy catching up with friends around the gorgeous stone fireplace, coffee or cocktails in hand. The Verve menu is billed as Modern Australian, with Asian and Mediterranean influences dominating the

eclectic and wide ranging choices. A tapas plate for two is a medley of mediterranean flavour – smokey chorizo, lightly dusted calamari, feta wrapped in filo pastry, or zucchini fritters. A duck and green papaya salad combines mint, coriander, and Thai basil with a squeeze of lime for a fresh Asian flavour. A lamb backstrap sits on a zucchini and haloumi fritter, and comes with a roasted aioli dressing. For dessert, Catalana is an orange and cinnamon brulée with liqueur infused stone fruit. The wine list is wide ranging and cocktails are a speciality, whilst brunch is popular every day of the week.

ffering a wide selection of restaurant quality food at café prices, the modern Australian menu has a touch of the Mediterranean but owner Angelo Petrides sums it up in two words: “comfort food”. Old favourites such as Caesar salad, sirloin steak and hearty burgers rule the menu here, almost always accompanied by chips or wedges. The lamb jumbuck, however, remains the biggest seller. Lamb tenderloins marinated in bush herbs are served on a bed of salad and topped with home-made tomato and basil

sauce. Almost as popular is the chicken breast fillet baked with Tasmanian brie, pine nuts and spinach, with a berry glaze. My Café is also a popular breakfast spot and serves its breakfast menu until 5pm every day. The outdoor area is bustling all day long, especially on sunny Canberra days. In winter, outdoor heaters keep the al fresco devotees warm and toasty and allow for Manuka's favourite pastime of people watching to continue uninterrupted. All in all, here is a place where you can easily lose track of time as you watch the world go by.

atriarch and namesake, Emilio Konidaris is the grand master of seafood in land-locked Canberra, having been involved in the seafood business as a restaurateur and providore for the best part of four decades. His philosophy is simple: fresh is best; and his knowledge and experience allow him to choose wisely when visiting local suppliers, which he does on a daily basis. Most days, one may find the lit and refrigerated display at the front of the restaurant filled with lobsters, prawns, oysters and various species of fish, slowly depleted as the day goes on, as testament to the philosophy of freshness. In the kitchen, Fabian

www.thisiscanberra.com.au

Wagnon and Zoe Zografos turn out simple and unfussed dishes that make the most of the produce on offer by letting the ingredients come to the fore. Whole snapper or silver bream may be grilled and served with a lemon butter sauce; lobster may be classic mornay; and good old fashioned fish and chips are always good. The menu has a touch of the mediterranean, and land-lubbers are catered to with steaks and pastas also available. A reasonably priced wine list is designed to complement the menu. The fitout is modern and stylish, with muted colours on the walls and carpets and pretty light fittings complete the picture.

Aubergine was given an invigorating lift a couple of years ago when well respected chef/owner Ben Willis took over, and now finds itself firmly in the upper echelons of the Canberra dining landscape. Food presentation here is immaculate and contemporary, and the flavours are delicate and refined. For starters, a ballotine of ocean trout is served with Port Stephens oysters, pickled cucumber and a crisp quail egg. Mains may be pork belly and loin

with toulouse sausage, braised bacon, leek and mustard creamed potatoes or free range spatchcock with fennel purée, cocotte potatoes, asparagus and almonds. To finish, one may find a heavenly passionfruit crème caramel with star anise sorbet and grand marnier strawberries, crêpe suzette with mango ice cream or a selection of fine European cheeses. In the dining room, plush carpets, muted browns and creams and natural timber fixtures are offset by striking beehive-like light fittings. By day, the sun streams through floor to ceiling windows and by night, the room takes on a warmer, more intimate feel. Service is understated and efficient, with waiting staff attentive but not intrusive.

ot far from the established dining destinations of Manuka and Kingston, this hidden gem is starting to make a name for itself amongst lovers of Thai cuisine in the capital. Although the name is a reference to Bankok’s bustling nightlife and dining precinct, Soi VIII has the feel of a neighbourhood eatery, with a small but friendly team headed by partners Nok Fraser and Ting Senthavysouk, giving warm and personalised service. A range of authentic and tasty dishes are offered by chef Nok that include entrées boo jaa; steamed chicken mince with crab and lightly fried water chestnuts and a tangy sweet chilli sauce or tom yum goong; a spicy prawn soup with pearl mushrooms, lemon grass, lime leaves and galangal. Mains include red or

green curries, larb in either chicken, beef, or pork, and seafood specials such as wok-tossed fish with chilli and basil or whole deep fried snapper with chilli and tamarind sauce. For a little theatre try the angel prawns served flaming in a mild red curry with wild ginger. Expect bold flavours as Nok refuses to bowdlerise, presenting her dishes with authentic ingredients such as lotus root and Thai eggplant. Décor is an easy mix of traditional Thai elements with modern touches. Dark timber, brown tones and wallpaper give the place an inviting ambience, cushions adding a little decadence. This is a BYO restaurant, but a good range of wines and beers are available at the local supermarket a couple of doors down, so be sure to pop in for a bottle before you get there.

ou could be forgiven for thinking this restaurant has been here for a hundred years, but that is testament to the vision of food veterans Domenic and Ornella Celestino. Their latest venture opened at Narrabundah shops in 2009 – down the road from most inner south hotels – and is living up to its promise of delivering a classic Italian experience both in food and atmosphere. The fitout is vault-like, with imported salvaged bricks used extensively in the formation of walls and arches, giving an almost subterranean feel to this mediterranean noshery. Heavy framed baroque artworks adorn the wine coloured walls; and parquetry floors, deep brown bench seats and mood lighting complete the picture. Cuisine is straight from the Italian countryside, and aromas from the wood fired oven drift freely through the restaurant. Whilst crusty and mouth watering pizzas are certainly the main product of the oven, expect to see it turning out

traditional roasts like goat, lamb or pork, matched with simple and fresh ingredients. Typical is the galletto alla brace, whole spatchcock marinated in olive oil, chilli and bay leaves. Pastas are house made and include a classic carbonara with pancetta, free range eggs, garlic and pecorino. ‘La Cantina’ means cellar in Italian, so in keeping with the theme, pick a Penfolds Grange or a Brunello Di Montalcino from the glass walled wine cellar which stocks vintage wines from Australia and Italy – some up to forty years old. The passion for coffee is also evident here with the Celestino's own label, personally selected and grown in Vietnam, sold to drink or take home.

ake your way past the Kingston Hotel’s ‘cook your own’ set-up and head into this cosy looking bistro that is making a name for itself by serving up wholesome and traditional pub food that is well priced and generous. Expect to find old world Australian fare such as a crusty house-made steak and kidney pie, beer battered flathead fillets with chips, or country style silverside with mashed potato, braised cabbage and parsley sauce. A very generous steak burger is

available as well as old favourites like bangers and mash. A 350 gram rump or a 300 gram porterhouse steak come with a choice of sauces and are served with chips and salad or vegies for under twenty dollars. Starters may include salads, a vegetable and feta tart, or lemon pepper calamari. Oysters are served natural or in the classic mornay or kilpatrick styles. Desserts are simple and classic—bread and butter pudding, crépes with a choice of fillings, or a decadent slab of double choc chip brownie

served warm with chocolate sauce and ice cream that should keep sugar addicts happy. Decor is warm and cosy, with dark carpets, lots of dark timber furnishings and thick wooden venetian blinds creating a comfortable ambience. As Maddies is inside a pub, there is no BYO, however there is a good selection of wines along with beer on tap as would be expected. Patrons may also take advantage of the hotel’s expansive outdoor area if they wish to dine al fresco.

A

s the name of this Kingston restaurant implies, the food here is rustic and authentic, as the service, across all facets, is handled by the Callipari and Spadafora families with care and love. La Rustica’s casual environment makes it a great family venue, and confirms it as a genuine neighbourhood trattoria. Hailing from Calabria’s Mare Ionico in the southern tip of Italy, the kitchen staff bring with them the region’s culinary secrets. Expect to find a simple and delicious hand made gnocchi Sorrento, with rich tomato and basil sauce; or the very popular spaghetti pescatore, absolutely crammed with fresh

seafood. And as Calabrian cuisine contains a long tradition of seafood, expect to see much of it on the blackboard and on the regular menu. Don’t be surprised to find you can’t finish your meal as portions, especially concerning pastas and risottos, are particularly generous. Pizzas are a highlight, and follow the classic style, rather than the more modern interpretations on offer in many places these days. Like the menu, La Rustica’s wine list is big. It offers Australian, New Zealand, and helps make lunch or dinner the complete Italian dining experience. Décor is pleasant and bright, and seating is ample both indoors and outdoors.

’unico is the only Italian restaurant in Canberra – one of only 14 restaurants in Australia – endorsed by the Academia della Cucina Italiana in Milan. Authenticity is high on the list of priorities here, as is evidenced by the flowing and fluent Italian spoken by kitchen and floor staff alike. The spacious and inviting interior has some classic elements. High ceilings, timber and marble against warm red tones, and heavy framed paintings add to the feeling of old world charm and a sense of the ‘big night out’. From the kitchen, expect a starter of fiori di zucchini: fresh zucchini flowers stuffed with prosciutto, mozzarella and provolone; or a seafood antipasto with scallops, swordfish diced in a tomato sauce, and smoked salmon

crostini amongst others. Pasta may include a cannelloni di carne, made on the premises, and filled with slow cooked minced beef and fresh herbs and topped with parmesan. A range of mains include a number of chicken dishes such as pollo ai gamberi: oven baked chicken breast with prawns and a creamy cognac and lemon sauce; or veal dishes like scaloppine ai funghi, pan fried and served with mushrooms, shallots, white wine and a demi glaze reduction. A broad range of wood fired pizzas are on offer as well, and here you may find L’unico tipping its hat to Aussie tradition. Yes, you can order a Tropicale, with ham and pineapple; and an Australiana with ham, bacon and eggs, alongside other more Italian sounding offerings.

H

e is, however, the first to give credit to his team. Manager Jemma Gundry makes one immediately comfortable by her genuine warmth, effortlessly chatting with everyone from local families to some of the most influential figures in business and government. In the kitchen Chef Nino Pagano – a true artisan – works with passion, combining decades of experience in the kitchens of Rome with fresh local ingredients, creating classic tastes rarely found in such an accessible setting. Simple things are done well. Pastas such as fettuccine

and gnocchi are made in house, with sauces that cannot hide their origins. Traditional Genovese style pesto, for example, is teamed with sun-dried tomatoes and served with any pasta that diners choose. But a look at the menu or blackboard confirms that seafood and meat dishes are truly the drawcard here. Swordfish and salmon feature prominently, as does veal in typical Italian style. Popular choices also include lamb cutlets and char grilled beef dishes. A good wine list is offered, along with a selection of Italian liqueurs and desserts to finish.

any patrons will know the menu off by heart – and the waiting staff by name. Many will have frequented a number of restaurants, over the past twenty years or so, operated by charismatic owner and chef Salvatore. Established in 1986 La Dolce Vita is the oldest Italian restaurant in Kingston, and has not escaped the attention of neighbourhood regulars, or high ranking pollies when parliament is sitting. Plate-sized pizzas are always good with ingredients such as prosciutto or ham off the bone, fresh mushrooms or artichokes. Pastas

range from standards like Spaghetti Marinara, an ample serve with fresh seafood done in tomato or cream, or specials of the house such as the Penne Mosco Vita, a great tasting combination of vodka, smoked salmon and cream. The standout, however, is the ricotta filled ravioli. Made fresh daily by Salvatore’s mother Anna, a forty-year veteran of the restaurant game, it is served with a simple sauce of tomato and basil and should not be missed. Mains include a number of traditional dishes such as Saltimbocca – a stack of pan-fried veal and bacon with a bay leaf sauce.

T

he philosophy behind Madam Woo’s cuisine that makes it unique is that “each continent has its own distinct flavour, therefore the food must be adapted to suit its environment”. Traditional Woo family recipes are refined to complement the climate and the wide variety of wines and beers that are enjoyed in Australia. Madam Woo offers dishes of mostly Malaysian, Thai, Singaporean, Chinese, and Vietnamese origins, such as

coconut lime chicken, red curry prawns, along with laksa, which they are becoming well known for. On the floor, efficient and cheerful service is managed by Jacky’s wife, Ruby. Whilst the restaurant looks quite small from the street, there are two distinct dining areas here. Out the back a rustic looking space is ideal for larger groups while the fit-out at the front is vibrant and funky and, like the food, adds its own distinct flavour to the dining scene of Kingston.

T

he menu in this lively Kingston restaurant delivers quite an array of flavours, encouraging diners to share the many raciones on offer. Similar to tapas or meze, raciones are the feature of the menu here, and typify the kind of informal and leisurely dining that the cuisines of southern Europe seem to excel at. Robust in flavour and rustic in presentation, these entree sized dishes may be as simple as house marinated olives or jamon with fresh melon; or a little more involved like grilled squid and chorizo pinxos with caper berry oil, or sardines in saffron escabesh. Also try chorizo sausage served flamed with Portugal’s version of grappa, aguardente. When ordering mains,

it is simple enough. As the menu states, grills and roasts rule supreme here. Oven roasted salmon is served on mixed potato fondo, grilled lamb backstrap comes with cognac and sweet potato chips, and of course, chicken is flame grilled and smothered with piri-piri. To simplify matters, diners may order a mixed racion, mixed grill platter or an all-out Vasco’s banquet. A range of surprisingly good wines from the Iberian peninsular complement the food beautifully and are well worth sampling, along with a list of premium Aussies. In the dining room, soft blue and yellow tones, along with some rustic touches to the décor, help create a space with an unpretentious and relaxed atmosphere.

amed after Chiang Rai, a region in the north of Thailand, Thai Chiang Rai has consistently offered authentic and sometimes unique dishes that have impressed enough to see it win awards for Thai cooking in the ACT on a number of occasions. Whilst many lovers of this cuisine are drawn by the usual, and very well executed, array of green and red curries, or the ever popular pad thai, those in the know come seeking owner and chef Noy Phachantharong’s list of house specials. Although he recently took over the restaurant from long time owner Nat Chaiyabam, he has been running the kitchen for the last six years

and been a major factor in its success. Typical to his repertoire are duck legs cooked in herbs and spices and served with figs and steamed asparagus; or scallops stir fried with basil, mild chilli, onion, shallots and snowpeas and topped with macadamia nuts; chicken fillets grilled and served with a Thai paw-paw salad and may be served with the traditional Thai sticky rice. The interior is surprisingly warm and cosy for such a large space. Ceilings are high and interior details are painted in blue and yellow with bold touches of red, and walls are adorned with the occasional authentic item, such as a gorgeous handmade golden tapestry.

n this stylish new establishment, décor is somewhere between urban and rustic, with high ceilings of exposed timber, a red brick feature wall and industrial looking drop lights on the bar side mixing well with the more subdued but beautifully furnished lounge and dining area. The kitchen offers an appetising selection of tapas and pizzas for grazing alongside a conventional menu for diners wanting the whole experience. Tapas may be a simple offering such as wild olives with house-baked ciabatta, or a little more involved: caramelised roast pork belly with chilli and coconut vinegar, or crab and prawn ragout in brik pastry. Tapas

double as starters, and mains may include an amazingly tender 400 gram rib eye steak served with beer battered chips and bearnaise sauce, or a twice cooked duck leg with roasted potato, pumpkin and balsamic. Finish with a cheese plate, or one of the mouth watering desserts which include a warm chocolate fondant with raspberries, perfectly gooey on the inside and crumbly on the outside. There’s a range of tap beers, including some boutique choices like 1664, and a solid wine selection. And for those patrons who like to linger after dinner The Kennedy Room’s bar stays open until late most nights for a civilised drink or cocktail.

eeknights at B Bar kick off at around 3pm with a great selection of delicious tapas sized bites available as accompaniments to the great range of bottled and tap beers and well respected wines that have made this bar a favourite destination for the after work crowd in the inner south. For those people looking for a dinner alternative, the tapas here will impress. Expect to find tempura prawns, or deep fried calamari; an antipasto of authentic Italian flavours, or mussels with olive oil, parsley, garlic and chilli. For the hungrier patron, more substantial meals like steaks can also be ordered. Temptation Tuesdays feature

complimentary tapas from 6pm. A great selection of cocktails may include such treats as Berry Balsamic, a fusion of strawberries, vodka and balsamic vinegar; or Sam’s Sour, with Absolut Citron, Cointreau and sugar. As the weekend beckons, hip young things and partygoers infiltrate. An impromptu dance space rules the centre of the room as DJs play funky house beats to the enthusiastic crowd. The modern bar space is subtle – olive and metallic décor, smart light fittings, groovy ottomans – and the heated courtyard area in the rear is one of the biggest outdoor drinking spaces in Canberra, great in summer and winter.

ocated at the Hotel Realm, Ostani is the result of the evolution and expansion of the very popular Bacchus Bar, one of Canberra’s favourite haunts in the vicinity of the Parliamentary Triangle. The large space has an eclectic feel, with a number of themes coming together beautifully. Geometric iron light fittings hang from dark glossy ceilings; lush drapes separate low modern lounges on one end and high backed booths on the other, rustic timber beams are countered by luxurious old world carpet; and wooden framed bi-fold windows open onto an

expansive outdoor area that is usually abuzz with drinkers and diners. Tapas are a speciality here. Grilled prawns come with a basil mayonnaise; asparagus with grilled haloumi; and chicken and rosemary skewers with a pesto dipping sauce. Pizzas stick to their Italian origins; and a range of ‘tavern specials’ include fish and chips or beef burgers. The wine list features labels from most Australian regions as well as New Zealand, France, Spain and Argentina. Cocktails are classics like mojitos and martinis; and tap and bottled beers keep the crowd happy.
