Editor’s Note

Every traveler will tell you that the part of the journey they enjoyed the most, the one they easily recall and mention often as the most memorable part was how travelling took them to experiences far from the familiar, and brought them into new discovery, new experiences and deeply satisfying exploration.

Devolution is without doubt one of the best administrative policy changes that happened in Kenya with 2010 Constitution dispensation. Travelling through Makueni County in South Eastern Kenya reveals the devolved unit is brilliantly tapping into its tourism potential; through visible, gradual investments on its people and tourism facilities, as Think Safari magazine witnessed while exploring the length and breadth of Makueni; from Malili near Konza to Tsavo West and Mbooni Hills.

In this edition, we take you on a journey through Makueni County, deep inside some of its finest facilities and share insights from those leading these efforts from the frontline; while also highlighting why you must exhibit at the upcoming Africa Travel and Tourism Expo at the KICC in August 2023.

Drought - A Persistent Threat to Wildlife Conservation in East Africa

East Africa is home to some of the richest natural habitats in the world, from the vast savannahs to the lush rainforests. These environments provide a habitat for a diverse range of wildlife species, including elephants, lions, zebras, and countless others. However, the region has been experiencing a prolonged drought, which poses a significant threat to the survivalofthesespecies.

ThedroughtconditionsinEastAfricaaredriven by a complex set of factors, including climate change, deforestation, and overgrazing. As a result of these factors, rainfall patterns have become more erratic, causing prolonged dry spells that have depleted water sources, vegetation, andgrazingland.

One of the major challenges facing wildlife species in EastAfrica is the depletion of water sources.Droughtconditionshavecausedmany rivers, streams, and waterholes to dry up, forcing animals to travel long distances to find water For many of these species, such as elephants and lions, access to water is critical forsurvival, astheyneedtodrinklargeamounts ofwaterdaily

As water sources become scarce, competition forthosethatremainbecomesintense, leading to conflicts between different animal species. This has led to incidents of animals attacking and killing each other, further reducing the populationofalreadyendangeredspecies.

Thedroughthasalsoledtoasignificantdecline in vegetation, which is the primary source of food for many herbivorous species, such as giraffes, antelopes, and zebras With food sources becoming scarce, these animals are forced to move long distances in search of grazing land, leading to increased competition forfoodandfurtherreducingtheirpopulation.

Overgrazing is another significant challenge facingwildlifespeciesinEastAfrica.Withlimited grazing land available, domestic animals such ascattle, sheep, andgoatsareoftenbroughtinto nationalparks, competingforresourceswithwild animals.Overtime, thishasledtothedestruction of vegetation, which has affected the food sources of herbivorous species, further threateningtheirsurvival.

Humansettlementsanddeforestationhavealso contributedtothedepletionofwatersourcesand vegetation in East Africa. Forests are a critical source of water and play a critical role in regulating climate conditions Deforestation, through activities such as logging and charcoal burning, has led to the loss of water catchment areas, leadingtoadeclineinwatersourcesand makingthedroughtsituationevenworse.

Humansettlementshavealsocontributedtothe problem of habitat loss, with increased human activity reducing available land for wildlife species.Theriseinhumansettlementshasalso led to increased human-wildlife conflict, as animals venture into human settlements in searchoffoodandwater.

In conclusion, the challenges facing wildlife species in East Africa parks are complex and multifaceted. Drought conditions, habitat loss, overgrazing, deforestation, and human settlementsareallcontributingfactorsthathave led to reduced water sources, depletion of vegetation, and increased competition for resources. Unless these challenges are addressed, thecontinuedsurvivalofmanyofthe region's iconic animals is at risk Effective climate change mitigation, sustainable land use practices, and improved wildlife management practices are all essential if we are to preserve theseprecioushabitatsandtheiruniquewildlife speciesforfuturegenerations.

CONSERVATION

HOW COLLABORATION IS REDUCING HUMAN-WILDLIFE CONFLICT IN KENYA

Kenya is known for its national parks,

which are home to some of the world’s most magnificent wildlife species However, thesuccessoftheseparkshascome at a cost of human-wildlife conflict. The conflict is mainly caused by the encroachment of human populations and farming activities, leading to the loss of natural habitats and competitionforresourcesbetweenhumansand wildlife.

Thehuman-wildlifeconflictinKenyahasbeena concern for many years among conservationists, communities, and the government. The conflict results in the loss of both human and animal lives, destruction of farms, and depletion of wildlife habitats. As a result, it is a problem that requires urgent attentionandproactivemeasures.

One of the most affected areas by the humanwildlife conflict is the Maasai Mara Game Reserve The reserve is a world-renowned tourist destination, known for the annual wildebeest migration. However, the migration route passes through the Maasai community land, which has led to conflicts between the communityandthewildlife.Thecommunityhas lost their livestock, crops, and even lives in some instances, as a result of attacks by wild animals.

ThegovernmentofKenya, incollaborationwith wildlife conservation organizations, has taken several steps to mitigate the human-wildlife conflict One of the strategies used is the establishment of wildlife corridors that connect various national parks to enable animals to move freely between different habitats to find food and water. This strategy has been

successful in reducing the conflict as it minimized the animals' encroachment on humanland.

Another approach used by the government is the compensation scheme for wildlife-related damage.Thegovernmentcompensatespeople who have suffered losses from wildlife damage asawayofdiscouragingpeoplefromtakingthe law into their own hands. This approach has reducedthenumberofretaliatorykillingsofwild animals by people seeking to protect their propertyandlivestock.

Education is also a crucial tool in reducing the human-wildlife conflict. The government and conservation organizations work together to educate communities on the importance of wildlife conservation and how to coexist with wildlife. The education programs are designed to sensitize people on the need to reduce their impact on the environment and how to use deterrentstokeepwildlifeawayfromtheirfarms.

In conclusion, the human-wildlife conflict is a major challenge facing conservation efforts in Kenya. However, proactive measures like establishing wildlife corridors, compensation schemes, and education programs have been essential in reducing the conflict. The government should continue to work with conservation organizations and communities to find more ways to reduce the conflict, such as creating alternative livelihoods for communities near national parks, upgrading tourism infrastructure, and developing ecotourism that benefitsbothwildlifeandlocalcommunities.By doing so, Kenya can successfully conserve its wildlife and create sustainable economic opportunitiesforitspeople.
