Amazing Grace Framed Print John Newton, writer of the beloved hymn Amazing Grace, knew what it was to be completely transformed by the grace of God. Born in London in 1725, Newton was the son of a merchant ship commander. At the young age of eleven he dropped out of school and began the rough life of a seaman. He eventually became the captain of a British slave ship, transporting Africans to be sold into slavery. On one of these voyages, while Newton was attempting to steer his ship through a violent storm, he experienced God’s presence in a powerful way. “Lord have mercy on us!” he exclaimed as the ship was tossed about and threatened to sink. Even though he had no religious belief at the time, he suddenly realized that God had used the storm to open his

eyes and give him an unforgettable experience of grace. Newton would forever remember that day in 1748 as the day of his “great deliverance.” Several years after his conversion, he became a passionate minister and prolific hymn writer. Amazing Grace is one of many hymns Newton wrote during his time of ministry. It is not only a reflection of his own life, but has struck a chord with people through the centuries who have also been rescued by God’s powerful, life-changing grace.
